In this video one can see what was the David O. Selznick administration building which stood as Selznick International Studio's Logo seen at the beginning of every Selznick produced picture. Too, it had a stand in as "The Big New House" in Atlanta that the character Rhett had built for his beautiful, new bride; the character Scarlet. A glass matte sheet was painted, then superimposed over the administration building in front of the camera. But the shrubs are the same, after seventy-five years of clippings notwithstanding and the brick walkway too.

I’m absolutely sick of people, namely millennials, screaming about our history. I would die for standing for the truth of our history rather then try to erase it and live a miserable life in denial. Sure, there was racism in history, ever since the world was created, and there’s going to be racism all across the world til the end of time not just for black people, but people of all cultures. Buck up and just be kind and work on your own heart in your corner of the world. Gone with the Wind is a classic and it is not racist, at all. It’s never going to be erased because of sissies who can’t handle the truth.

I believe a replica of the front of TARA was used in the opening scenes of the hit TV show "The Big Valley" with the late great Barbara Stanwyck and Linda Evans. If you watch old re-runs you'll see that. I LOVE Gone With The Wind and own a copy of it on DVD. My late father was in Atlanta Georgia for the opening in 1939. I'll NEVER forget when I saw it in NYC in the early 1970s at the Loews theater at Time Square. When the scene came when Clark Gable shows up at the foot of the stairs, there was an audible gasp from every woman in the whole audience, even 30 plus years after it was made!! Thank you for sharing~

The actual Tara set at Selznick Studios was torn down in 1959. The Big Valley used a similar set at Columbia Studios. That set was built in 1947 for a John Wayne movie. It resembles Tara, except that it has five porch columns instead of four. The Big Valley was filmed from 1965 until 1969. In 1974 the studio tore down the Big Valley set to build a parking garage.

She told them that she would rather play the part of a maid than to have to be one in real life. She bought her a 17 room mansion in Los Angeles and hired a maid to help take care of it. Im a white lady. Gone with the Wind would not have been a good movie without Mamie and prissy, they made us laugh so much. Great Movie.Mamie had a good heart and a happy smile, great actresses

This place wasn't used for any interior shots. The inside scenes of Tara and Twelve Oaks were filmed on studio sets. The hedges and bricks paths were indeed used in the movie, though. A mat painting, which served as the brick mansion the Butlers built, blocked out the Selznick house during that scene.

It took me a while to read the book, but it was worth it. The book goes into detail about the ride to the Wilkes party and goes into detail about the characters. I started reading Gone With The Wind because when I read the book Scarlett, Sequel to Gone With The Wind, Scarlett had too additional children besides Bonnie. I though it was strange until a friend told me that in the GWTW book, Scarlett had a child from each previous marriage. The sequel went along with the book instead of the movie, so it made sense to me then. I found a site about 3 years ago where I could read GWTW free. If I can find that site again, I will post a link.

Unfortunately most people believe that GWTW was a Southern filmed epic and the "houses " portrayed really exist!!! All scenes courtesy of the magic of film sets! Margaret Mitchell used her grandparents' home in Jonesboro ,Georgia as a adjective setting for Tara! The house was a plain and simple two story large farm house with columns ,square in shape, and looked nothing like what the Selznick Studios built for the movie! There are many authentic books about the movie ,its film settings, and other interesting facts that I wish people would acquaint themselves with! I am a Southerner, the misconceptions about our region and particularly this movie , are very distressing to we who revere our heritage,All of our heritage ,including the ugly facts of life about plantations and slavery! The book Margaret Mitchell wrote over a ten year span is very different from its motion picture counterpart! The library has a copy I'm sure! Please read it! Margaret tried to make the point of how women of the South had to pull themselves up by their boot buttons and SURVIVE in a harsh environment after the War! An entire generation of young men on both sides were lost!, dead, maimed,or left mentally bereft of what any war does to its soilders and the families left to pick up the pieces of what remained

I am a black female and yes! This is the best book i have ever read! I am from the south & we are very proud of our heritage! Slavery was horrible incident in our history... but this movie does glorify the strength of the women... many slaves did choose to stay with their plantations after they were emancipated..they were family! It was officially the RKO-Pathé Studios, acquired by RKO when they absorbed Pathé in 1931. Selznick leased the whole studio sometime in the late 30s, but by the early 40s the lease was not exclusive and others filmed there as well. RKO used it throughout the 40s and maintained ownership. RKO sold it off to Desilu when it ceased production in 1957. It's funny that Selznick used the main building as his logo when it was actually owned by RKO.

I would come home feeling very fulfilled after historic LA trips, you’re empty inside compared to enriching your life like this and the whole experience lingers in you. Too bad life isn’t as playful today and that we have to get that from dead people. I don’t know how to describe visiting historic areas of creative people. You feel more alive. It’s more meaningful. Your whole being is enriched.

I have his daughters , Clark Gable, Judy Lewis autograph. She was the product of he and Loretta Young. She wrote a book called “Uncommon Knowledge” which detailed her life and how her mother pretended that she adopted her because being born out of wedlock and to a married man was SCANDALOUS! I reached out to her when she was a therapist out in California and she responded back. One tidbit from the book is that she, Judy, was the same age as the little girl who played “Bonnie Blue” in the movie when the movie was made. She ruminated on how she could of played her. She also had plastic surgery on her ears when she was about 5 or 6. Her ears were big just like Clark’s. She said it was EXCRUCIATING !! They didn’t have the drugs they have know. If you see a photo of her she’s a DEAD RINGER of her dad.

sheila sharpley Clark Gable was black did you know that he was one of those many blacks that passed back in them days so that makes her black. Because they call that" passing" you don't believe me watch imitation of life with Lana Turner and trust me a lot of black people pass back in them days and you know why because the white man's DNA genes wasn't contaminated with the race of others back then so naturally when he had sex with a black woman if it produce damn near perfect white baby. I said a white man and black woman because ain't no way in hell a white woman got knocked up by black man and with producer then they're passing baby because she did she would have to leave town to go visit her aunt Myrtle somewhere in Colorado blah blah blah and a lot of white women black men they were going to have the baby somewhere up north or in California somewhere where it was considered acceptable for interracial relationship but no southern white women with their get pregnant by a black man but a child and had that baby or she might go visit a midwife out in the black Countryside and your birth that way and leave it with the family so a lot of white women did that. We have a black news woman here and Little Rock a white mother gave birth to her and a family from northern Arkansas black family drove all the way for 3 hours to come down and adopter and raise her as one of their own she's now a news woman in Atlanta and she is damn near White. Anyway I just wanted to share that with you.

sheila sharpley my black sister lives so much about our heritage that most black people don't even know. End of story a little hit before I go you see a lot of retouching and airbrushing of photos and stuff back then what was the modern-day version of CGI or Adobe Photo shopping they called it airbrushing you need a lot of official photos put out by the Studio's were airbrushed out a little bit now when they started filming the makeup artist with pretty good back then they could change searching negroid features to look white I know it I know it sounds hard to believe but hey so does Sasquatch or Bigfoot. So always research about history and you'll learn a lot of things I have they don't teach stuff like this in school.

For the love of God, you were at that gate for TEN MINUTES and there was a plaque there on the ground to the right of the gate, and you didn't point the camera at it ONCE!!!. I would like to have seen what it said, I'm sure it was commemorating the history of the property. (slaps forehead)

+JohnWesley .. Yea you're right, when he was still across the street I thought that when he was crossing over and heading over towards the house with the plaque on the stand in clear view he would show a close up of the plaque first off, but no, he probably was concentrating more on the original hedges and the front door stories instead .. sure was a missed opp that's for sure ..

It's now called the Culver Studios. And all of the sets from King Kong, including the great gate, were set on fire and destroyed in order to build the sets for "Gone With the Wind". That is told in the documentary, "The Man Who Made Gone With the Wind".

Nope. Twelve Oaks was a matte painting. For the one scene where the O'Haras arrived at Twelve Oaks and walk up the front steps, that was at a set that was built at the studio.
@TwoGuns51

You’re right, Ellen. My grandfather was a scenic artist for MGM for over 30 years and he was under contract (actually on loan) to Selznick to paint the Twelve Oaks scene you refer to. He also worked on many other matte scenes in the movie including Tara. In those days, artists painted background scenes for movies; now it’s computerization.

The facade was taken down by Desilu in 1959 and moved to GA. Only the front door has been restored (by former owner Betty Talmadge) and was on loan for several years to the Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta. It was sold to anonymous buyer in auction last year. Rest of facade went to GWTW museum in Marietta GA in the auction.

It was torn down in 1959 and sold to Betty Talmadge in Georgia. The rest of the sets on the Forty Acres backlot were torn down in 1974. The land was sold and it is now an industrial park.

Um....sorry...this is NOT the "set" of GWTW. "Tara" was a facade, NOT an actual house. The burning of Atlanta was the burning of the King Kong set. The facades of any house in the movie was excactly that: a facade. Everything else was a soundstage. How dare you.

It has been said by scholars whose knowledge far exceeds my own, that much of the inspiration for Margaret Mitchell to write Gone With The Wind came from my ancestor Fanny Kemble, who married not just any plantation owner, but one of, if not THE richest, Pierce Butler. Her book: "journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation,'' is the writing for which she is best remembered readily available should anyone wish to discover more. You can read them at www.univie.ac.at/Anglistik/easyrider/data/fanny_kemble.htm xoxo ❤️🌹
