hard disagree that you're bad at communicating! I was first drawn to yr channel bc of how thoughtful and clear you are in reviews/wrap-us. you may be uncomfortable improvising what you say, but that's why you take pains to prepare yourself the way you need to. having to do homework isn't being bad at something; it's being good at something

I think Mrs. Polk is one of the main points but ****SPOILER ALERT**** so is Rebecca and the choice she makes when shit gets real. It reminds me of the college girl character in season 1 of "The White Lotus." Glad I haven't tried Paris yet. Sounds like one to skip. Everyone is raving about "Say Nothing" so I'm going to have to add that to my TBR. I still love Luster, not only for the writing, but for the very authentic portrayal of a New York that isn't magical or overly violent, especially with the protagonist growing up in the Capital district. Great video as always!!! Love watching you!!

Oo great takes on eileen and luster which i didn’t even think about!! Young nyc life is soooo crazy romanticized even in its hardship but edie’s characterization is decidedly unromantic! Thanks Anna ❤️

Eileen was my first Moshfegh and I loved it. I liked the movie more than you did but I can't really defend it lol. I read Eileen and Luster around the same time and omg was I angsty. I own Say Nothing and Women in Clothes and I hope to get to them soon! Looking forward to a Feb wrap up
@yenasung
@yenasung 7 месяцев назад
Eileen + Luster = potent angst indeed! Say Nothing + Women in Clothes will be a really heartwarming combo even though topics are heavy it’s lovely to see the effort and care put into both books. I’m already shaking at the thought of feb wrapup covering 16 books when jan is already 45min for just 7 books 💀

I also made my book club read Eileen a couple years ago and had a similar experience 😂. That's super interesting about not relating to Edie from Luster because you're more of an old soul. I *loved* Luster because my new-ass soul related so hard even though it's been a decade and a half since I've been Edie's age. Amazing video as always!!

I also liked the writing in Luster, but I found the story to be paper thin. And although I'm not really a reader for the plot, I just was lost in this story. I needed more background work to understand these people and less coincidences to move the story forward.
@yenasung
@yenasung 5 месяцев назад
Yes, that’s what I felt about it too! It’s not like it’s plotless - I felt the need for structure. Nevertheless its chaotic vibes carried through and resonated with a lot of readers so idk maybe it’s just not for us 🤷🏻‍♀️

I missed seeing your face here! Hiiiiii! Okay, Ive been wanting to pick up another moshfegh but have been feeling very deer-in-the-headlights about which one to pick up next. Ill def go the Eileen route! And yes to Luster just being an onslaught of this is what it feels like to be in the hell den of your twenties! Im glad you gave it another read, if only to spend some more time with her yummy sentences.

You should still watch eileen just for that overacting wig alone. You should definitely read luster it’s worthy of the hype. I’m in awe of ppl who can just…speak. Lol. I wish i had a writers room living in my brain to feed me what to say. And then actors to take over my body to perfectly convey the delivery.
