Where is Anton Chigurh fom? Let's explore that by discussing the 2007 film No Country For Old Men and the novel by Cormac McCarthy.
No Country For Old Men's antagonist, Anton Chigurh, is perhaps the most mysterious movie villain ever. He has an accent that we can't quite place, and his surname is of unknown origin.
Cormac McCarthy created Anton Chigurh, so it's best to ask him about the surname. We can get an idea of what Anton Chigurh looked like by reading the novel and watching the film by the Coen Brothers.

Not much is known from his childhood other than he survived a horrible attack on his family brought about from his father's dark dealings. He was the only survivor in fact. After that he was raised by an old man that was from a lifetime of fighting in the French foreign legion. He dies not pop up again until arrested thought to have been involved in the mass killing of 13 men known to be les beaux voyous. He escaped captivity over night killing 3 guards and a dog . @@cpkarkow663 Bardem was born in the Canary Islands, from (if I recall) Castillian and Catalan ancestry. As for Chigurh... McCarthy may not have consciously recalled it, but a Belorussian politician imprisoned by Lukashenko at the end of the 90s was Mikhail Chigir'. I have never run into anyone named Chigir' who wasn't Belorussian, though the name isn't Slavic. Possibly it's Kuman or Gagauz. Anton is also a common first name among East Slavs. Many people of non-Hispanic ancestry immigrated to South America during WW II and the post-War years. To cut a long story short, I'd put him down as having grown up in Colombia, quite possibly in a Jesuit orphanage, where he would have received a superb education, a strict upbringing, and damned little warmth. He had likely attended medical school before whatever experiences got his bike completely bent.
@reymohammed7040
@reymohammed7040 Год назад
Bardem has stated he was born during the Franco regime, and that many of Franco's police, torturers, and murderers were talking about their "careers" for some time after, with neither shame nor fear of punishment. He was seven when the Franquists carried out their final execution by garrote vil of a political opponent, Salvador Puig Antich. The act caused outrage and was doubtless discussed in his own family, some of whom were themselves anti-Franquist. This doubtless colored his interpretation of a rigid, cold-hearted, cruel executioner.

@reymohammed7040 I think Bardem should consider himself fortunate that he didn't grow up under the rule of the communists that Franco won against. Then Bardem would've had some real problems to be upset about.

I've always thought it was strange when people try to "figure out" Anton Chigurh Anton Chigurh can not be figured out because he is the embodiment of the unknown just as The Joker is the embodiment of chaos and Michael Myers is the embodiment of Darkness In some ways he is like Chuthulu (the name even sounds similar). If we could understand him it would completely undermine his character. The whole point of Anton is that his is beyond our understanding. He is an agent of the unknown and as HP Lovecraft once said there is no greater fear than the unknown
@justinktobin

Yes, not understanding him fully and his mysteriousness is perhaps the whole point of what makes him so scary. I’d love to interview Cormac McCarthy and ask him. I’ve seen the odd interview he does and I’m like “Ugh, why didn’t you ask him about Anton Chigurh!” Haha.
@BabyKobeeee
@BabyKobeeee Год назад
You may be right, but I don’t think so as that would undermine the whole ending car crash scene with Chigurh, that scene was there for a reason. And as many people have said, the only thing “divine” in the film was the omnipresent wind blowing (present throughout the film) That crash scene clearly seemed to show that Chigurh was nothing more special than the randomness of the guy finding the money or the old cop opening the door not knowing if Chirguh was on the other side. Chigurh is essentially a realistic representation of the randomness of evil/death more so than the unknown. He’s supposed to be mysterious but he isn’t anything special.

Yeah. I see a lot of comments on scenes from this movie like " he didn't have to kill her" or "if this was different Llewellyn would have won" I think it's flattering to whoever wrote the book, script, scenes, that do many people view this movie as a football game. 😀 Fiction is fiction. Yo do this you totally have to have people rooting for someone. Truth Llewellyn was a dick. Shot a deer, forgot about getting it after he found the money. Stole the last survivors title and magazine. Did not call for help, did not even shut the door to his truck when the guy said shut the door there's wolves. Of course he had a slight change of heart that evening and decided to at least bring the guy water.... Crazy how we get sucked into these fictional stories.

Anton Chigurh is Keyser Soze's third cousin and comes from the same area. He's one of the few people Keyser is rumored to use on a a semi-regular basis. I told Cormac stories about him in the early 1980's after the notorious ship explosion and fire which killed so many foreign men in San Pedro Harbor around that period. While the local police blamed infighting between local Serbs and Croats, and never came close to closing the case it served as the inspiration for "The Usual Suspects". I have always been surprised they used Keyser's name but he seems to have correctly assessed it would brand him a fictional character like his cousin Anton. Cormac and I had a third hand acquaintance with them when dealing with an export problem to Northern Ireland during the Troubles of the 1980's. As far as I know Keyser and Anton are still active businessmen. Entirely respectable, I assure you.

For some reason I can imagine an "All the Pretty Horses" type of character evolving into Anton - a young drifter, amateur hunter and poacher getting hired by a dodgy ranch, doing "dirty work" including sorting out the competition, and then skipping after some tragedy or prison time, infected/enlightened with own understanding of morals and survival in a world with no place called home.

Maybe that was the whole idea "the less we know,the better".He seemed like a person who didn't believe in after life or God,like if his philosophy was "do what ever u want it doesn't matter any way this is the only life u get u don't know any thing about the next life so jzt make do what u want".He also seemed very trained like if he was some type of Professional hitman not jzt some guy after money.The movie was great and hooked us all especially this mysterious character..He litrally " jzt came and went" and then he jzt disappeared into the wind..Thats all we know about him..We can't give the cops a good description of him.
