Where Is Consciousness Located?

Where is consciousness located if it is not in the mind? If consciousness is infinite, does that mean it is located everywhere? And why is the experience of our self as consciousness sometimes referred to as being vast, spacious or empty?
Rupert says: ‘The first step is that you feel awareness is the witness of your experience. But the witness could still be limited or feel like it’s located in your head. The second step is that the witness then loses its localisation. As a result, where you previously thought it was located in the space behind your eyes, you now feel it’s located everywhere in space. However, that’s just the mind trying to account for the feeling of being unlocalised, in a way that’s consistent with its belief in time and space.
‘But the awareness that we essentially are is not tiny or located in the head, nor is it vast or located everywhere in space - it is infinite. Vast means “endlessly extended in all directions”, but infinite means “of no dimensions”. In other words, it’s not in the time and space that seem to be real from the point of view of each of our minds. So, the statements that awareness is vast, spacious or empty are legitimate statements, but ultimately untrue - they are the mind’s attempt to describe awareness in terms of its own limitations.’

Thanks for highlighting that. I sincerely don't understand why in all this retreat videos, some of the participants are constantly appearing with eyes shut in meditative mode while another person, or Rupert himself, is talking, it all seems to go against human instinct. They may not be aware of this, but from the outside they look completely selfish, even solipsistic, and why not?...rude. I have only been once to one of this live events with Rupert Spira, and that was years ago at the Rudolf Steiner house in London. It was my very first and only experience of the kind, and all throughout the event I kept feeling like the odd one out just for naturally directing my attention to Rupert's words, and the exchange that followed later with the audience. Sorry about this negative comment but I couldn't hold it anymore.

@@elvisonthemoonto be fair these are always privileged middle class people, ok they’re struggling like the rest of us, but the fact they drove there in there 21 plate beemers and are indulging in the personal bliss of the event us really a bit crass, I mean I love Rupert’s teaching etc but these are not people grafting on minimum wage in mould infested estates, but I mean good for them, good way to spend their time in Oxford but it’s a far cry from a true non dual understanding, hopefully don’t sound too arrogant but these are just alternative luxury getaways like a spar day or 5* holiday

I’m so glad that the profound experiential wisdom of the non dual truth is being carried to so many. Over half a million subscribers now. I remember when it was a fraction of that. Consciousness is the basic canvas on which the Universe manifests. So there's no question of where in macro cosmic realm. In individuals it appears to manifest inthe space/cave of spiritual heart. Appears because it's there everywhere, but cause of action is from heart center.

Of course the mind is our awareness. We think it through and stay with it. The answer comes or not. Without the intelligence, and curiousority ....no awareness. It was suffering and me working my shadow and issues that made me awake.

Actually the meditation gets her closer to zero which is also endlessly vast. The duality is all the gradations between zero and infinity, but infinity is an emerging property in the world.

A church preacher shouts to the congregation. " God is good, but, it's the devil that brings all the evils in the world ". The congregation shouts back "amen". The conclusion is, God is all good, but, it's the devil that causes all the evils and sufferings. Thus, it's not the deity God, that is responsible for the sufferings. Only the devil can be held accountable but, not the deity. All blames are conveniently placed on a strange imaginary entity the devil, to protect and perpetuate the false notions on a deity and existence. This is a belief in duality. Rupert tells his followers, that, Consciousness is all happiness, all peace, completely fulfilled, but, somehow, these nonexistent minds and finite minds imposes their OWN nonexistent limitations onto this all happy and peaceful consciousness. Thus, he claims, that, consciouness is never responsible for the sufferings. This is how, every religion was born. Rupert also has been preaching from day one that consciouness is Never responsible for the sufferings. Because it's the mind and finite mind that impose their Own limitations. No, Rupert, It's not like that. How can it be like that? It cannot be like that. How can nonexistent entities such as mind or finite mind impose its OWN nonexistent limitations? This is what a religion is. Its a belief in duality. Praising one while blaming another. This religious belief, praising consciousness while conveniently, dumping all blames onto nonexistent, imaginary entities, is done, only to protect and perpetuate the preconceived false notions on consciousness and Existence. A deity and the devil. Consciouness and mind. All praises to the deity and consciouness, , and, all blames to the devil and mind. Unfortunately, these childish self deceiving religious ideologies and beliefs have always managed to get the majority of humanity to just believe and accept their claims throughout history. Religious ideologies have always succeeded to convert many. Not because it's the Truth. But, because, it makes its bets on the Ignorance of many, just as how it has always been done and proven throughout history. Not a single religious ideology can survive in the absence of self ignorance and self dishonesty. One can never be too careful, or be contemplative enough, when it comes to understanding the nature of Existence in Itself.

I would advise you to watch a couple more of Rupert’s videos to gain a better understanding. He does not postulate a duality of consciousness vs mind. Ordinary Mind experience is a localization of infinite consciousness and as such creates the illusion of separateness. Once the egoic mind is the predominant operative then the ordinary concepts of good and evil arise since the world is separately experienced. The ego views the world as “out there” vs itself “here”The ego’s primary objective is its own survival/preservation. Good vs evil is derived in that false reality.

@@MeisterFFI'm afraid you're completely mistaken as most followers usually are, when a religious ideology is involved. Rupert's model of Reality is a religious model. A religious ideology and view on Existence. Rupert is heavily influenced by religions. Christianity, Islam, kashmir tantric traditions and little superficial knowledge of Advaita Vedanta. That's the reason why Rupert always refers to " the world's major religions and traditions "as he puts it ,to validate his religious view. It's very obvious, that, you missed Rupert's talk on the prophet Muhammad to validate his own idea of God. He's free to believe whatever he wants like everyone else. But, mixing any reasonable model of Reality with religions, religious ideologies and beliefs, never goes well together. And, it usually never ends well. Rupert has been claiming from the beginning that consciouness is Never responsible for any suffering. All blames were dumped on non-existent minds and finite minds. That is a belief in duality under the packaging of non-duality. Religions praise the deity and conveniently dump all blames on a strange imaginary entity ,the devil to explain away the sufferings. Which explains nothing, other than being a show of ignorance. Praising one while blaming another is only possible if both the deity and the devil have their own independent existence from each other with their own volition. This insane childish ideology has always managed to infect the majority of humanity throughout history. By betting on the ignorance of many. So, it continues. Let me illustrate what a consciousness only means. A consciouness Only model means exactly what it says. Consciouness only. It means, Consciousness Alone is the Cause , the Source of all experiences. The good, the bad and the ugly. The whole package. Why? Because there's no one else. No devil, No ego, No mind, No finite mind to ever speak of. None whatsoever! Religious ideologies are always born of self ignorance and self dishonesty. Self deception always comes with ear candies. Pleasing the ear like a sweet poem, only to end up deceiving oneself, others and ultimately Existence Itself. You take good care of yourself!

Can some of you beautiful beings explain this me? There seems to be too many unexplained issues about life in this non-dual tradition. I've spent about a year now listening and learning from Rupert/Francis/Klein and all the masters like Maharshi and Nisargadatta as well as the Parsons/Newman camp. I get all of the differences but am still bothered by something missing from all of it. I'm not religious but simply by natural life in general, as well as knowing about the natural order of creatures in general that it seems there is some kind of eternal mind or intelligent designer of some kind. When I've sat for awhile and simply looked at the basic order of things I see that the sun comes up and goes down, my cat chases birds, the squirrel eats nuts....and even though I'm not the body or mind when I'm with my wife and she's in the mood I simply go with the flow and it seems my body and mind really have a back seat. It's simply my nature. How does it not make more sense that some kind of designer has put everything in place to work so properly and effortlessly? I simply cannot buy the theory that everything is just energy or a Consciousness that is void of original intelligence. Help

I forgot to mention the in the Jewish/Christian/Muslim traditions it says that man is made in the image of a creator and is therefore a spirit. The body is simply what the spirit/awareness is being held in until death. This seems to make perfect sense to my experience knowing I am not my body or thoughts but also eternal unchanging spirit of some kind. Why is everything in life so beautiful in form yet so incredibly complex in the dna and all the functions of all the forms? All of life is so effortlessly and seemingly worked out all the while we are simply here like fish in aquarium flowing threw it all and knowing we have absolutely nothing to do with all this complex function and beauty. Strange how an apple fits so perfectly in my hand.

The witness doesn't have its own will apart from the desires it witnesses from the mind's innate nature. The wrong belief that it does, also called 'free agency', is what creates the sense of separateness in the witness. I won't follow any teacher unless they acknowledge this truth.

That is not the point ie " where is consciousness located', the real point is what is the purpose for awareness and consciousness and to where is the awareness information being relayed to for it's purpose. This teacher is attempting to present Consciousness a a reality and a knowledge source. Reality couldn't care less about the state of consciousness nor someone's perception. Reality is its own entity because it's random and according to Universal matter formulation. Random means happening without method or conscious decision. Consciousness is fleeting and requires a faculty which is the mind, both that are non physical and both require a faculty which is the physical brain. Consciousness and awareness are simply just tools to inform the physical brain which inform the Physical Source within of its surrounds for the purpose of Evolving to survive. The mind nor consciousness cannot form anything especially not a physical brain and body nor a physical brain cannot form a physical body. That would mean a Source initially Formed to then give rise to the intelligent species physical body and brain. Hence, you your lineage was initially FORMED not BORN. Consciousness was nowhere to be seen nor had a hand in that process.

Why is it hard to live it than preaching it? So most of the time is taken for shows than living it. There is nothing you can do teach actually as its a direct in knowing and experience. Tao can never be taught nor claimed neither told. So the last option is live with it.

Repeat a false statement , it will feel like real and right , all of your body feelings will tell you , you are right . I just invite people to judge whether this knowledge by these gurus are logical or reasonable to believe. I think it's pseudoscience because all they are building hypothesis over hypothesis and trying to find evidence which supports it . This make us so biased .

Then the physical existence of clay pot is outside but im The knower who knows it in the form of knowledge im grasping it, hence im claiming/says that pot is exist ,Like the person sitting next to you exist bc you are known him or how could we prove it ,. You're getting lost in words, as does Spira who is a man trying to make a living by selling something he hasn't fully understood. Words and concepts are not reality and you're concerning yourself with something that has no meaning rather than simply observing what's happening, including yourself/your own mind and all it's reactions, which is what these people (at best) try to recommend. Talking, thinking and debating words and concepts is an endless and pointless cycle when it comes to understanding the totality of life, which is all-inclusive of absolutely everything including you. All these words are merely trying primitively to point to being quiet and observing actuality, so do it. Or don't do it if you don't care to, it's your life.
