how about making the companies that create the plastic containers of all sorts responsible for taking the empties back? here they are making huge fortunes from plastics of all kinds - why not make them have to clean up the planet as part of their jobs? Why leave it to others?

Let's have permantent containers for filling up Milk, and other products from dispensors that can be available at the grocery stores.I have seen them in Europe. You just fill up the containers you put the lid on, get a little slip about the price from the machine , pay at the cashier.

A team of researchers just estimated (2/12/15) in the journal Science that 4.8 to 12.7 million metric tons of plastic waste entered the ocean in 2010 alone. For the answers why, see our video (above) and article on the world's biggest garbage dump... the Pacific Ocean. science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/earth/oceanography/great-pacific-garbage-patch.htm

There are third world countries literally dumping truckloads of garbage directly into waterways. There are videos showing truck after truck arriving and dumping. The equivalent of truckloads of garbage in the ocean is literally from truckloads of garbage being dumped into the ocean! Put pressure on these countries to put a stop to it.

Harold Hardister it really don’t cost that much our garbage collection service puts out bins for recybables all you have to do is pull up and drop em in 24/7 The people that practice this have very little trash they take it to the recycling center that they set up sort it bundle it and sell it to the appropriate recycling centers They claim it’s a lot cheaper than buying new land for landfills Even though the donator don’t get paid any money directly it keeps their garbage bill down and is good for the planet
@gabbar51ngh
@gabbar51ngh 6 лет назад
Harold Hardister Why clean it? Numerous islands have been made with garbage. So why not just dump sand and rock there? Make it your own country or maybe work it with nearby country and sell it to rich people? Japan's island added garbage to its island airport. In fact this makes making islands cheaper since garbage is already doing the work for you. Put tonnes of sands and rocks on top of it, Let the base be full of Garbage

Just back from islands of Saint Kitts & Nevis, located in the caribbean sea. The islands were a giant trash cans and the locals told me that they "can't recycle because the garbage barges are greedy, charging too much". We spent most of our time on the shore and never saw a single fish, dolphin, etc. We saw tons of trash though. Locals use the island for a trash can and their shores would make you cry. A little research shows that all Caribbean Islands have the same attitude. Pain causes change and they survive on tourism money. Consider vacationing some where else. I know we will.

@darrellwestphal4265

To all the people in the world and to the comments below. I was taught to not complain unless you have a solution. There is a very simple solution to this problem. Most Plastics can be broken down into little pellets and reused. There are some Plastics that are contaminated with food products and paper stuck to them that are not is easily reusable. And America's running out of space for dumping are trash. Most of the plastic that ends up in the ocean lakes and rivers is due to the people that are throwing the trash onto our streets. If then gets washed into the ocean to our sewage. The problem is not plastic or our trash there are many good things that we could be doing with it but we are not it is we the people that need to change. Here's my solution to the problem of our garbage. 1 we must demand that Congress make a law that says all homeowners recycle if the homeowner does not recycle they will charge a fee so that it can be recycled by others at a recycling plant. Every city must have at least two recycling plants. If not 4. As for people that live in the apartments right now we pay what is called a alligated bill for water sewage and trash each building has its own dumpster the residents of the building that occupy the dumpster will charged in that alligated bill. And for the people that don't care and purposely litter our streets there are two things we can do with that. One the people that are literally must be fine first second and third offenses will increase once we hit their wallets they will care. 2 we encourage by making it profitable for people to pick up the garbage by offering money for it like we did with aluminum cans and glass. There are a great deal of people that would be picking it up if they knew they could get money for it. Then we recycle everything and reuse everything that we can. The food products that we cannot recycle should be buried in the ground only food products should be buried and made into methane Natural Gas. The stuff that cannot be reused like the Plastics that they are talking about can then be molded into making walls doors floors and roofs to make affordable housing for people. We have a wood shortage that most people do not realize. And affordable housing is unheard of here in America. But if we take the idea from Henry Ford and what he did with the Model T week and end turn this plastic into affordable homes. Plastic melts and is easy to mold. Plus wood rot when it gets wet and many animals and insects make it their home where we have to spend a lot of money repairing and insecticide. Whereas with plastic it is waterproof it will keep you warm in the winter cool in the summer and no Critters will eat into it or water ride it to make it a home for insects. This will solve the problem. There is no reason for us to run around screaming like chicken little the sky is falling the sky is falling. We are human beings with a brain let us start using it. If any of you have other ideas that you can add to what I said please reply and let us hear it. Y'all have a good day.
@Dixxi91

How do some of you not see the benefits of cleaning up the bigger pieces of plastic before they break up into millions of smaller pieces that we can't remove later on. The only way to stop this problem is to stop adding plastic to it, AND removing the big pieces before they turn into small pieces. Then the problem will be manageable, because then the only problem is those small pieces that already broke up before we got around to fixing it. And that would be sad, but still nothing compared to the issues we will face in the future if we do nothing now. We have to act before it's too late and all sea life die out. This planet is mostly water, so it's safe to say that most of the edible food on this planet comes from the ocean. If we pollute it to the extent where it's not safe to eat anything from the ocean anymore, HOW ON EARTH are we supposed to feed the human population. Step 1: stop making plastic step 2: our current plastic must be disposed off in a different way. step 3: clean up all the big plastic pieces in the ocean. step 4: pray we were not too late......

You can't stop plastic production (at least not with present usages) but you can reduce drastically by at least 60-65%. Whether or not people care enough and whether government/political apparatchiks want to put in place such restrictions and enforce them is another matter (I doubt it).

"The Ocean Conservancy reported that China, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam dump more plastic in the sea than all other countries combined.[33] China alone is responsible for 30% of worldwide plastic ocean pollution." Making the USA ban plastic isn't really going to help. Rather, the USA should probably just directly help with cleaning efforts.

My name is Mark C. Radosevich and I live N.E. of Durango, Colorado. I'm a 67 yr. old scientist and inventor of a biodegradable and extra profitable liquid fuel replacement for petroleum. This new higher mixed alcohol fuel is a synthetic blend of C1-C6 normal alcohols to include methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol and six carbon n-hexanol. This GTL (gas-to-liquids) synthesis technology [refinery chemistry set] has been in use for a hundred years in converting methane natural gas or solid coal into C1 methanol. My GTL system uses a totally different patented catalyst to produce six, eight or ten normal, synthetic alcohols instead of simply C1 methanol - and at 5x the efficiency of conversion which dovetails directly into its profitability. The first green herein are the profits which this fuel synthesis system will generate for its equity owners. The second green which drives me is its near-term benefits to Land, Water and Atmosphere. The U.S. EPA approved this new alcohol fuel for commercialization on September 20, 2001. This gas to liquids higher mixed alcohol technology began 45 years ago and still has not been commercialized. There exists a very large and definite controlling greed factor stymied by divisive patents to about one-half of the planet. I have been quietly working with this new and hidden fuel for the past 25 years. This new "Oxycarbon" mixed alcohol fuel contains just three atoms. Carbon, associated Hydrogen and new, missing Oxygen which is derived from H2O as hot steam. The chemical magic herein becomes the missing Oxygen atom which is not contained within Hydrocarbon [fossil oily] fuels of Nat/Gas, Crude OIL or solid Coal. This additional Oxygen atom does not contain any BTU's of combustion energy. Instead, it "fans the flames" to enable refined petroleum oils or ground coal or natural gas to combust far cleaner and provide more torque, fuel economy and a highly reduced emissions profile. The Oxygen atom also changes the polarity of the fuel molecule and instead of floating on water as ALL oils do (even edible oils) -- the new and stronger (less expensive) fuel alcohol is magnetically polarized to bind and dilute with water. This becomes the biodegradable aspect and the new alcohol fuel actually provides a free lunch to single celled [plant] phytoplankton & [animal] bacteria species and to all green living plants, trees, brush and grass. All of these living species consume the dilute alcohol fuel for lunch and pop off a water molecule. The chemistry is very simple, so simple that young children can interpret and understand it. I need investors to development a $50M tiny showcase demonstrating that society's solid waste garbage, sewer sludge, ground tires, beetle-killed pine, medical wastes and hazardous wastes become the source feed stock for Carbon & Hydrogen (instead of corn kernels) and such solid wastes are cleanly converted in a special Rotary Kiln Gasifier without a smokestack, thus no emissions. Imagine all of these nasty solid wastes being converted into a new, extra profitable, water soluble, biodegradable, oil soluble & coal soluble extra profitable biofuel without a smokestack, AND at negative cost per gallon as these solid waste feed-stocks come with a tipping fee for disposal. Right behind the next $50M scale of demonstration will become commercial sizes of mixed alcohol refinery systems beginning in the $350M to $500M range which zero their capital debt in their first year of operations. The Oil Industry is more interested in converting their abundant sources of Methane natural gas and CO2 into this same new biofuel. Thus this GTL system has two front ends, one gaseous the other being solid wastes. The latter is the most profitable. Using Methane Nat/Gas and CO2 as feed stock will produce the new liquid biodegradable fuel for about 35¢ per gallon. Gasifying the solid wastes of society without emissions and collecting a tipping fee will produce the new liquid biofuel for approximately a negative -35¢ per gallon. This is the answer to provide a replacement for fossil fuels and help mitigate air and ground pollution and global warming. Please pass this message on to those who care about humanities future.

No. What we need is proper use of plastic. If everyone stopped littering, that would make a huge difference. Put all the trash in large plastic bags and seal it up before throwing it away. That way it doesn't get blown into the rivers. But the main problem comes from third world countries. They have too many open dumps and their trash on the streets.

They make us double the extra thick plastic bags, only to find them in the empty carriages in the lot because they were too lazy to bring their reusable bags INTO the store in the 1st place. And we aren't charging them. And we then have to throw them away because we can't assume they are still clean. When customers get cut, or spit in them when they are sick

Why does no one mention that many third world countries literally dump truckloads directly into oceans and waterways. There is so much video footage of truck after truck pulling up and dumping into waterways! Let's address this issue!

who's idea was it to dump plastic in the oceans?
@davidconway6874

Most of it just fetches up there but some of it is deliberately dumped. Either way the ecosystems are screwed.

I've heard that 90% of the plastic is coming from 8 rivers, 2 in Africa and 6 in Asia. The countries along those rivers use them as a garbage dump. This problem must be addressed. Plastic should be banned or the ocean will be a dead zone. These oceans here on earth are the only known oceans in the universe that contain life. And we are killing it. This is no joke folks. This is probably the biggest environmental disaster ever.

This is actually not completely true...I watched the Vice documentary about the garbage patch (they actually went out there) and it's not solid garbage like you would think...it's actually billions of very very small plastic particles not visible, most of the time, with the naked eye. Yes you will see large pieces of floating random garbage once in awhile but it's not a floating dump so to speak. Most things degrade except for plastic, and it too degrades but just not all the way, hence the billions of particles floating around all the oceans of the world. Go watch it.

If China can build these floating concrete islands, then maybe one day, rather than sending out trawlers to clean up the mess, which is too costly and time consuming, we may be able to build a floating island near to the garbage patch and have a power station fuelled on plastic built on one of these concrete islands. Anything is possible. It just requires a lot of thought. I guess a lot of the rubbish out there is largely due to hurricanes, twisters and tsunamis and not all attributed to dropping litter on the streets.
