This video includes a comparison study to find the weakest point of the armor of T-54 when it is attacked by APFSDS 3BM42 with the speed of 1700 m/s. The results show that the lower armor is the weakest. This is probably because the lower armor is 5 deg steeper than the upper armor. Please tell me your opinions.
This video is influened by other youtubers: Dejmian XYZ Simulations, SY Simulations, Extreme Engineering Simulation.
From tanks-encyclopedia, The T-54 is a legend. It was used more extensively than any other Cold War or modern MBT to date. It was supplied to or produced by Warsaw Pact countries, forming the bulk of their forces during the 1960s-70s. Then it served with the allies in the Middle East (Egypt, Syria, Jordan) and numerous nations among the non-aligned and third world countries. A staggering 83,500 were produced, alongside the Polish and Czech versions (21,000 more). It was largely associated with colonial or independence wars all around the globe and is still one of the most common pieces of equipment of any armored force today. China copied the T-54 under the Type 59 designation and it was also largely distributed among Asiatic nations, notably North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and North Korea.

Note(‘22.05.13.): I found that due to my modeling mistake the armor behaves as it has much higher strength. So, please watch this vid just for fun :) Let me study more and upload realistic&interesting vids soon.

Yeah I was wondering why a tungsten penetrator could barely penetrate half of it's length of steel armor
@ivanstepanovic1327
@ivanstepanovic1327 Год назад
Most projectiles have ballistic trajectory, meaning they move downwards as they fly towards their target (tank, in this case). So, a flat trajectory, perfectly horizontal to the lower plate (you would usually have to aim at downwards) is very unlikely. That is why lower plate is usually much thinner and made of steel, not composites. Hit there is not that common (despite what video games tell you) and will have downward trajectory, thus increasing its relative thickness.

Glad there's a new RU-vidr doing that stuff. But doesn't the 3BM42 look a bit weak on this case? Id imagine more of the penetrator would be retained considering it is very long
@militarysimulationlab
@militarysimulationlab 2 года назад
Thank you :) The tungsten core of the penetrator is around 400 mm long and 20 mm thick, meaning that the armor is much more massive than the armor. For better accuracy, I’m working on a new video to validate the simulation results.

good animation that is more fluid than that of SY animation, it would be interesting to see some explosive reactive armor such as relikt and such added to outdated vehicles such as the t-54, object 279 etc and see how much it defends against penetration against modern rods, its not something ive seen any of the other channels do as of yet. Although in some of your other simulations such as the 3bm42 simulation it seems that either the rod was too weak or the plate was too strong cause its unrealistic for it to penetrate so shallow...

Hey :) I have a question : Why in this simulation the 3BM42 round can't pen 100mm of armor properly but in Dejmian XYZ's it can pen lfp of an Abrams that it has 38mm in the front of composition and NERA and other than that 100mm back of them?
@militarysimulationlab
@militarysimulationlab 2 года назад
Good question! That’s just because when I modeled the armor in the simulation I gave it quite higher strength than its actual value by mistake :( I made that mistake because I’m a beginner in this area. Let me prepare more realistic simulation results soon and add some comment in this vid not to mislead viewers.

Im sure you did a wrong modeling of 3BM42. It has 2 tugsten carbide rodes and then a maragin steel rode, all covered in melted steel

Would the tank still be working even with the little penetration in the first and second scenario?
@militarysimulationlab
@militarysimulationlab 2 года назад
I think the tank would still work but not sure about condition of crew. By the way, after uploading the vid I found that I modeled the armor quite stronger than its actual stiffness. If so, the safety of the tank in the 1st and 2nd scenario cannot be assured.

You can refer to “www.steelbeasts.com/sbwiki/index.php/3BM42”. It says that “Armor Penetration: 510mm RHAe (KE)”. But as I said in the description this simulation has a material modeling flaw. If you want a vid on experimental validation then I recommand this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-22KeWJBs9hk.html
