The root cellar in Sanctuary is the best place to store all your stuff. The root cellar is a non respawning room with 4 containers you have to go through a load zone to get to. Since you have to go through a load zone, settlers can't go in there and take stuff. The cellar can be found behind the blue house to the left of the big tree.

Hmm, so my main takeaway from this: build a safe room with a switch door to safeguard my safes. Very useful, actually. I decided to kill everyone in my main settlement one day to see if they were synths, and was shocked that they were attacking me with my own legendary weapons. I thought they'd only arm themselves from the workshop, but they are a bunch of thieves.
@SkooledZone
@SkooledZone 6 лет назад
Haha, so true. And some of them even get greedy and take more than one legendary weapon. I found one of my settlers had taken my Justice shotgun, a two-shot radium rifle, and my Old Reliable out of a floor safe and didn't even have ammo for two of them. So yeah, the solution is like you said: a switch door safe room for your safes. Maybe even have a staircase that you have to jump up a little to get to it. 😏

Brainbox.cc Just make sure your room where you keep them doesn't have crafting stations, chairs, a bed. Sometimes the settlers spawn there when they're idle. Did you have that drinking station from Vault 88? They usually ignore everything when you have that too.

The best thing to do is create a settlement that is JUST for you. Don't recruit a single settler to live there. my choice is always spectacle island. I have it with my created robots living there (they don't steal). I actually built a very impressive Airship settlement at the island. I bet even Skooled Zone would appreciate it. Just have it as a place where you keep all of your legendaries, misc story items (tons of those), magazines, etc. They will be completely safe this way. I still have sanctuary as my primary settlement and you could say I "live" there. Spectacle Island is just like my Batcave.

The only glitch in building out these places to "look nice" is that these folks have no memories of the pre-war world. So simply building out concrete slab structures with little furniture is fine. No need to thrill anyone. We have to live through this new world full of thieves and murderers and mutations. Maybe I will build something nice after I have cleared the lands of foul types. For now, FOOL functionality is all I care about. My castle has all the wall breeches closed and I added concrete dorms OUTSIDE the pentagon so the center is able to be made a common area. Now my build bar is full. I wish I could expand the settlement perimeter size. I would build my own city.

The magazine rack is perfect because it acts like a storage item where you actually put the magazine in it and then it displays them. You don't actually place them in the rack.
@squange
@squange 4 года назад
Important safety tip about the pool table: Don't put pool cues on the table. If you have any unarmed settlers nearby and an attack triggers, they will run over and grab the pool cue which disturbs any items on the pool table - regardless of whether the balls and rack (or whatever other items you put on it) have been lift/dropped onto it or workshop mode placed. There is also a big difference between lift/drop placing an item and workshop mode placing it from a code standpoint. If you lift/drop the item, it is a discrete item separate from the surface it is sitting on, so if you select the underlying surface (let's say, to continue the discussion above, a pool table), then all the lift/dropped items will simply fall through it to the ground, since selecting an item breaks the cohesion of its wiremesh. Items that are workshop mode placed connect to the surface they are sitting on and when you select the surface, they go with it. They can still be knocked over or around by other items, settlers, you jumping on the table, etc., but they are much more stable in the long run and I have found they are less likely to drop through a surface on reloading of the area. A caveat - if you workshop mode place an item on a surface, often the item will sink halfway into the surface you are placing it on. I had massive problems with this when I was building my first bar in Sanctuary with balls on the pool table. It would look like a half a ball sitting on the table instead of a full sphere. If this happens, you can look slightly away from the placed item, and click on the surface itself and the item that is sunk into it will slowly rise up and pop to the surface, just like you if you stand on a table, select it, and then cancel the selection. The item will then be workshop placed on the surface and count as a part of it for group selections, moving the surface, moving the entire building, etc. Keep up the great work. I love the channel, and I would love to see the total immersion walkthrough of Vault 42. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Read about 150 comments and decided nobody mentioned this. You can actually do a "test" (in 3/New Vegas at least, but 4 is on the same engine) that shows the issue is a load order problem. First, you deliberately leave an item some place you know won't hold it. It has to be an area with a roof though. Let it fall through, do not pick it up. If you are lucky, and paying close attention, you will sometimes find the object on your roof. At some point it reaches the "bottom" of the map. The next time it spawns it essentially falls from the sky. That gives everything else time to load in, and it lands on the roof.
@SkooledZone

Nice one. Yeah, fixing the load order problem is one of the suggestions I have down for the upcoming Fallout 5 community request video.

Cheers mate, this entire series has been so helpful! With the settlers stealing your weapons I read elsewhere that they will only take weapons that they have access to ammo for, so as long as there is no ammo stored anywhere in your settlement they won't steal your weapons. I've been storing ammo at Home Plate ever since and haven't had a single weapon taken from storage.

For the theory about smaller objects loading before their "table" or whatever is loaded, I think that's spot on, because you can observe this... just set your fast travel mat looking at a couple of shelves and just travel to that location a few times, and if you're "lucky" you'll see in real time your stuff falling to (or through) the ground before the tables load. I've find that "bookshelves" are notorious for this and tend not to use important items to decorate those.

I found the perfect solution by my third game: get a settlement, recruit no one, and have the place all to myself. I chose Spectacle Island but I got lonely and so thought, "Who won't take my stuff?" @davidarnold7147 2 года назад
@@heyojayo8642 Settlements can get attacked with no settlers if you keep a lot of stuff there but it's infrequent. Robots don't count as real settlers (though they are counted in the total.) Playing a game right now, just hit 194 hrs, my main base is the Drive-In; in past games after Spectacle Island I used Vault 88 (not clearing the rubble, just the front section) and that place never gets attacked as long as you don't advance past the Atrium but I just kept the ghoul fed and (as stated), didn't clear the rubble. Anyway, while robots (from Automatron) are counted as settlers, you don't have to feed them or anything, rarely but it does happen: a settlement of robots will get attacked if even there's nothing in the Workshop. 'Cause someone lives at the settlement. What I found is a settlement gets attacked most often is: a lot of stuff in the Workshop (even if just food/water), an active beacon, and most often if a supply line is setup. I have one settlement in my current game that has 10 settlers but hasn't yet been attacked because except for food/water, there's nothing there. But it will be because of the food/water but infrequently. But there's no beacon, no supply line, and the less it has the less it will get it attacked: the more it has: the more it'll get attacked.

Saraphiene, removing the fusion core is the best way to keep settlers from using power armor around your settlement. But you need to keep all the fusion cores in your own inventory. If you store any in a container, they will find it and use it. Clever suckers.
@loraelstad8941
@loraelstad8941 6 лет назад
Skooled Zone: I had specific power armor (in Sanctuary) that was earmarked for settler use in attacks. I left fusion cores only in those 2 sets. I also had 2 other sets that were unique and I didn't want used. So I kept those without cores. BUT, someone reminded me that enemies can steal your armor with cores in them and suggested I put the cores in certain settler inventories instead. However, if I do that, they will be able to choose whichever armor they want. I suppose, if they are for display only, I could encase them in glass without a door and remove a side if I want to use them myself, but not sure if that is foolproof. I actually noticed that the armors I let them use were moved to random spots around the settlement, & were intact. I moved them back to stations & took the cores until I decide what to do. The weird thing is that my unique armors remained in place, but have pieces missing. Nuka Cola one has helmet gone & Nuka Quantum one has legs and torso missing. Haven't found the parts in any settlers' inventories, either. I only have 20 there. Mama Murphy doesn't allow me to assign or command her, though I was able to change her clothes. Not sure if that's normal. I have a ton of companions there. Praying, I mean Preston 😆 doesn't seem to want to be assigned to my armor emporium. Says he can't reach it, despite it being on a ground floor level. Curie has no problem with her Clinic and Piper with her Clothing shop. Even my love, MacCready, has no issues with farming our front lawn garden. Uppity Minuteman! 😂 He's probably just mad because I took his Colonial Duster off him and found it couldn't take ballistic weave, so I armored up a regular Minutemen outfit and put it on him. I'm miffed about the missing power armor parts. Don't suppose we are able to use those particular paint schemes, so I could replace & paint new parts? It's the Nuka Cola red and Quantum blue.

Settlers take items from containers, including the workshop in response to attacks. They will seek to upgrade their weapons and armour if superior equipment is available. Same as them using Power Armor if you leave the Fusion Core in. I did not know they can take fusion cores from safes, that's both awesome and annoying as I like to have a box of cores next to the PA for logical reasons.

4 years late to the convo. The reason 'dropped' items fall to the floor or through the ground has to deal with render distance & 'cells' for each area. When you walk to an area, the game renders areas infront of you & de-empathize (reduce detail) of areas behind you. If the area the game is rendering is 'over complicated' from complex building (I do it too, but I try not to exceed the limit for this very reason) then the game will take longer to render, & most junk items will render faster then furniture like tables & beds. This is why some settlers will revert to their old clothes & pipe Pistols randomly. The game is trying to calculate the settlement & sometimes settlers will be caught in a 'render limbo' which can reset their load outs. I once made a HUGE scientific workshop 'secure bunker' for all of the Garden Gnomes of Far Harbor you can collect. They would take lead, razorgrain, Abraxo cleaner, condensed fog, fusion cores, & cans of blood (placed in blood trenchers from Nuka World) & alchemicly transmute them into Gold for me. Eventually, each 'junk item' including the Garden Gnomes fell out of the bunker onto the ground below. Most of the items would be completely missing, likely falling under the ground into the white-void. I was unusually proud of my 'Gnome Gold Vault' & seeing my painstaking set-up literally disappear put me off ever placing more then a few junk items, & if I did I would be 2000% ready to see them disappear into hammerspace. Use containers to store your junk. Don't leave them in your workshop as they will be randomly used for repairs (by settlers) or stolen in raider attacks. I never made a settlement that complex with junk items again. Hug your Haunted Garden Gnomes. Don't let them fade into the void of distance render cells.

I have been enjoying your videos on building without mods and I am a subscriber..Thankyou for the effort you've gone to. The resultant production quality speaks for itself... I have been recently using console commands such as modpos and setangle to achieve what I've this failed to achieve with rugs and pillars etc... now my concrete windowed wall's have glazing! Yay! For sometime now I have been devloping the idea of a standard keep or outpost structure that employs the concrete blocks as the ground floors. (usually a 6 X 6 grid with steps leading up to the raised floor) Typically these floor slabs are raised almost as high as they can be without having them reveal their base edges above the actual ground level. Now... these are supposed to be "solid concrete" and yet when my ol'pal dogmeat, whom by the way I've taken to calling Deefer, accompanies me to some of these outposts will find himself sunken into one of these floor slabs up to his shoulers... I have laid rubber matting or tiles onto the floor's top surface like carpet mostly for my own sense of asthetics but I also thought that by adding another element to the floor it might prevent my hound from experiencing that sinking feeling but this has had no apparent effect... Suggestions?

I love your videos. In my main Settlement on my current game (I'm using Sunshine Tidings Co-Op) I actually built it to look like it has a bus loading area for a summer Camp. I even went as far as to put the broke down Buses on it, and use them for shelters for my Settlers. Off the back of the "parking lot" I put the Trailer, which much to my surprise snaps onto the floor piece. I then built around it to put one of the automated concrete doors on it and ran a switch to it. I stocked it with trunks, crates and even a safe so I can store the goods I collect all over the commonwealth.

I wish I had seen this video a few months ago! I only just found this channel a couple days ago when I really started getting into settlement building. I built a display case to hold some of my more valuable or unique junk items. After storing all of the items I wanted in there, I closed the door and went about my game for a while. I came back, only to find one item missing: the gilded grasshopper. I have since removed the display case, but sadly, it looks like my grasshopper fell through the world, and is gone forever. This should help with decorating my vault and other settlements as well, though, as I placed a globe on top of the blue file cabinet in my vault, and noticed the globe sitting on the floor below having fallen through both the cabinet and the floor of my class room into the hydroponics room below it.

One thing to note about the floor safe: It seems to have a very rare bug where it removes the Legendary effect and name from a gun. For me, it specifically happened with Kellogg's Pistol when placed in a floor safe in the Red Rocket. I only ever found one other post with it happening, if I recall it was also Kellogg's Pistol which lost its legendary effect and name when stored in a floor safe, but theirs was in Sanctuary. So it might be a bug specific to JUST Kellogg's Pistol, or it might be a bug specific to the floor safe, or it might be something that can happen to any legendary in any container, however exceedingly rare. It never happened to me again though, so I can't say for sure what conditions cause it to happen.

I haven't read all the comments, so it might have been mentioned, already. I'd rate the armor mannequins 11/10, because they can store *anything*, not just armor. I store some fusion cores that are near empty in there, in case someone asks for fusion cores (Vault 81, for example), i store undamaged/untarnished items for display at future stores, ammo, mini nukes and missiles - i know they (ammo) weigh nothing, but it cuts the visual clutter when not in personal inventory, weapons i'm not using and saving for future settlers and new settlements, even legendaries i want to keep. By the way, i have several power armors parked (sans fusion cores), and never have i had one borrowed by a settler when storing fusion cores in a mannequin. Nothing has disappeared from them. Perfect storage!

Consider doing it yourself. In part, because settlers are known to grab multiple weapons, and thousands of rounds of ammo. One channel recommended equipping sellers with weapons that are modded. He thought it fixed that. I’ve always been eating (edit; equipping) settlers anyway, and it wasn’t until my 3rd play through when I realized a slew of legendaries I had in a safe went missing right after an attack I was present for. In hunting the missing weapons down, I noticed my best equipped settlers rarely had a new weapon.

I will say this about the pool table: it can hold objects fairly well, but depending on your platform, there is a varying limit from different processing speeds... On PS4, it’s about 8-10. How do I know this? Multiple tests with billiard balls and cue sticks. 16 balls, 2 cue sticks, and a triangle...eventually would drop them all. Limit it to about 8 balls a stick and a triangle and it won’t fall. Anymore than that and you’ll start losing them. Even more so, it seems that once objects start falling through, they continue to do so regardless of the item total unless you store and put back the table from your inventory

Also fair to mention it is gray garden on top of the overpass . That being said some still get up there. I recommend not having any crafting stations near your main storage . my fix for newly arriving settlers...for starters, when i turn on my beacon...i only leave it on for a couple of minutes...usually only one or two settlers show up, (even though you can hear it on your pipboy for a long while after turning it on), when they arrive, i outfit them right away, farmers usually get road leathers and modded leather armor, (the upgrades get better as the playthrough progresses), and decked out with weapons straight off...defenders get military fatigues and combat armor with heavily modded weapons. not sure if you can assign a suit of power armor but i do know that if they jump in one you can get them out of it by asking. if i can assign armor it will be for my defenders. scrappers get coveralls and miners helmets with fully modded 10 mil pistols...and typically they are happy with that...if they don't dig it well, they can live somewhere else. i basically let preston and that crew have sanctuary...me? i moved into the red rocket across the river...all of my other settlements are set up for the amenities as it were...by the way, when is the contest?

Paul one thing i discovered is that game dev's use extra meshes to hold stuff in place... When you go somewhere and it has stuff on the table that never moves and you do the same thing yourself and objects fall through the table... Well using scrap everything ultimate i discovered that tables for example have a extra invisible mesh udually called general clutter and it's rectangle like a big rug and invisible but with the scrap everything it will outline the mesh allowing to delete it so i think that's the secret really how the game dev's can put something on any furniture and it won't fall through but can be knocked off ....

With the containers if you don't want settlers taking anything use console commands to lock the containers so they won't take anything also I find it best if you made a house that isn't navemash (sorry can't spell) so that the settlers won't go inside, example build a house ontop of Redrocket make stairs that settlers can't use (Don't snap them together) and boom but you still wanna lock all of your containers I found that if you fast travel somewhere and comeback some of the settlers will glitch into your house, but it's worth it, other thing is that the vanilla desk i find a 9/10 at keeping stuff ontop of it because they don't fall through... Anyways thanks for the awesome video, sorry this was a long comment

Aerial Hendricks I build all my personal housing with a switched door so settlers can't go in... But when I fast travel back they are always somehow glitched inside.. I hate that. And I keep trunks in those houses that I def command console lock bc I collect every legendary item I find and bring them back to my settlements as keepsakes and don't want my settlers taking them, but in my experience settlers only take weapons they have ammo for, so I made a .bat file to take away all their ammo and guns and give them a different gun and only ammo for that type of gun..

Using console commands just sets the ownership to you and no one else. Unfortunately, consoles don't have console commands. Ironic. And as far as settlers "glitching" into rooms that seem inaccessible to them. That is not a glitch. Whenever you load into a zone, either fast travel or get close enough to spawn the settlement itself, settlers will spawn randomly into that settlement. That's why you see settlers on top of houses and sometimes inside walls in Sanctuary Hills. They have a tendency to spawn based on your location at the time. So, for instance, if you are on spectacle island, some objects/settlers may not be spawned in on the far side of the island, until you are close enough. Kind of like the draw distance. Objects don't spawn until you are close enough to see them. Keep that in mind.
@bguilbeau
@bguilbeau 6 лет назад
The Spawning part of Becklus's statement is the root of the problem. Both for settlers being in places they shouldn't be and for objects falling through other objects. When you get close enough, things spawn in, they spawn in at different rates, and different distances. I used to play on an old slow PC. I never noticed the issue when I was first playing fallout, because I fast traveled. When I fast travel everything spawns around you at the same time during the loading screen. Later I played on that same slow PC but was in survival mode, no fast travel. I could run into sanctuary, and watch building/people/objects spawn around me. Some walls on buildings would appear before others, objects on shelves appear before the shelves...and so on. I upgraded to a much faster PC and even though I still play in survival mode, very few things fall or drop. I am not running fast enough to see things spawn anymore.

Paul if you've still not retrieved your lost items that have annoyingly fallen through the floor you can try the following trick: Pillar glitch a high chair (the ones with long legs which babies sit in) and sink it into the ground so that it just sticks up enough you can select it to sit in it. Once in you will find you are glitched into the ground. Get off and you will be under the world and can see below. Hopefully you can see your lost item like with the Nuka Cooler recipe book in Nuka Galaxy (that book always glitches into the ground bc of the bots and/or turret explosions). You will find you can still build whilst under there and its very useful for Industrial Water Purifier glitching. Peace!

But I give my settlers the best I can get, they are your army after all(Except Marcy and Jun Long, I give them crap because they are never grateful and complain no matter how much you do for them.). Keep all fusion cores on me. Also see several comments on magazine racks. I have to wonder if some people are manually placing magazines on these racks, because I’ve never had a single mag drop or move from either rack.

I’ve given my settlers heavily modified laser rifles, and heavily modified plasma rifles. One of each per settler. ..now I have to go around and check them all for my unique weapons, and armours.

I used tons of mods on PC, to augment the game and fix glitches. But the performance was poor and ultimately destroyed my progress completely. Gonna do this replay on my xbox, completely un-modded... I feel the withdrawal already :) These videos are absolutely gold, so thanks a lot for making and posting them. Cheers!

This video speaks to the reasons(dropped,stolen and dispersed items) I don't bring my settlements all the way back from war-time,and why I don't experiment with builds. I made a fairly immersive e.r. room in Sanctuary only to find it had been raided and scattered. Frustrating because it took forever to make. Also,I found y and x axis rotation doesn't work if you changed your controller map,making placement pretty much as if you're wearing mittens doing it.

lol - I get tickled pink with how much you actually sound like one of those handymen from a 90s "DIY Home Carpentry" TV Show (you know - the trope that Tool Time from Home Improvement caricatured)

I've done my own experiment with display cases and here's what I found. Most of the problem with the display cases I've found has been when I walk up to my settlement from a distance. It seems to have a problem spawning properly if it is trying to materialize in front of you as you walk up to it. If I only ever fast travel into my settlement, I almost never have an issue with the display cases. I have only ever done this experiment at my player home which is at a settlement with NO occupants. No settlers, followers, or pets. I just make sure I never go walking around the general area of my settlement and only fast travel in to it. In this context, I would give the display cases a 9 out of 10. They still aren't perfect.

Old comment but... THANK YOU! I'll have to test it, but this would explain why my items keep falling through all kinds of shelves. Unfortunately I play on Survival so fast traveling isn't an option so I'll have to try home plate maybe.
