Time Consuming Ep #36: Karnivool are an amazing Prog Metal band from Australia and this song deals with a concept that fits very nicely with last weeks Chaabi video. What does a Moroccan groove and an Australian band have in common? Besides originated in places I really want to go to?

I actually asked Drew Goddard (Karnivool guitarist) on Facebook after learning about the confusion since I initially believed the song was in 3/4 when I first heard it. He confirmed it's 4/4. In my opinion though, the bridge ("let's reset it all") with Steve's stack/china hits is so obviously in 3/4 it throws you off. Drew also gave credit to Jon's bass hitting the backbeat perfectly which further sold the illusion that the song is in 3/4.

The most complex is the "noob" version... It is not only polymetric, but it is also polyrhythmic and contains displacement. To write it on a staff it would be necessary to use nested tuplets. The "advanced" version is a 4/4 written with triplets. Karnivool rules, great video bro 🙂

YES, my request! Or at least one of the people requesting this. Thanks so much for doing this and for responding as well! Don't worry about not picking up on the rhythm immediately. I've played drums for over 20 years and didn't catch the correct rhythm for YEARS until I head the live version. I just always went with the wrong pulse and figured there was some fancy-shmancy rhythmics going on with the pickups and fills. Such a fantastic band, I'm not surprised you'd be into them considering you've already covered Tool, Meshuggah, Porcupine Tree, and Opeth. Plenty of material for you to analyze, I'm sure. Have you considered doing The Dillinger Escape Plan?

@@YogevGabay When I Lost My Bet, Farewell Mona Lisa and Pig Latin are personal favorites that I THINK have some oddities going on, but sometimes it's hard to tell if it's just some phrasing or accenting at a fast tempo or actual time signature tricks. Some of the more popular songs tend to be more straightforward. Another band that sits somewhere between Meshuggah and Dillinger is Car Bomb and they might give you a run for your money as well :)

Enjoyed this Episode very much! Thanks for sharing it with us, Yogev. Karnivool is pure gold and this song is so beautiful and well written. The entire Album is stunning. I am also guilty of having heard We Are as in 3/4 for actually many, many times. It always needed the fill in + Vocal-start "turn around" to get be grounded. I love these thing's. The more often "they work" at confusing me at first the more I enjoy it and keep coming back to them. :) Still, in this track, it doesn't give you an uneasy feeling at all, listening to it. That makes it so compelling, right? Cheers!

I've been waiting for you to break down a Karnivool song for so long, and you didn't let me down (as usual). But I'll like to suggest their song Scarabs for any future Time Consuming. It's been while since I heard that song for the first time, and at that time I had no ideia of what the heck was going on, and has been ten years since and I still have no ideia lol. Thanks, again, for your amazing videos and for the knowledge you give us.

Great video as always! Karnivool is awesome, and the drummers is probably the best of the group, which is saying something! I'd love to see you make a video on Goliath. If I remember correctly, it's based on the offbeats of 7/4, and is an absolutely delightful mindfuck of a groove
