A trip to the supermarket is starting to give me proper anxiety - the prices are skyrocketing every week and the cheapest options are disappearing from the shelves. Gareth, I suspect you started your channel to be a bit of light fun but in this last year it's turned into a proper social documentary of the wheels falling off this country😬 You're doing important work! 👍👍👍
Thank you once again for a brilliant review. You are doing a very important job Gareth and saving people money at a time lots of folk are struggling to cope.
For your followers who may not be aware a lot of products come out of the same factory, especially supermarkets' own brands. A few years ago I thought Heinz had more meat and veg in the tin compared to Aldi, clearly that is no longer the case. The great thing about these soups they are more of a meal than the 'non chunky' versions. The chicken and veg is the correct colour for a knocking up a curry, add the curry powder, boil up some rice and you have a chicken and veg curry with rice. As our savvy mum's have done in the past they have used them as a basis for a cheap meal. Years ago I owned cook book that was based on using soups to make great meals, if you're stuck for ideas all of the soup manufacturers do have online recipes to knock up a meal. Bon Appetit!
@@BaldFoodieGuy Same Factory, Same process but (mostly) different recipes to meet multiple price points even with Bread and Beer where you think it'd mostly the same stuff. The 'food' with the fewest factory gate price points I found was NFC/Chilled Fruit Juice, which had two.
There's no ceiling on price rises at the moment. They're changing upwards from week to week. It's getting to the point where you have to shop with an open list now. So if there's no difference in the quality or taste of the cheaper soup, it only makes sense to buy it or two for the price of the expensive one. Another great comparison and review today Gareth. Cheers mate 👍🤤😀
@@michaelketley876 sure does. I picked up some of the Lidl Newgate ones (I usually get the Aldi ones, but I can confirm the Lidl ones taste the same as Aldi Bramwells ones) as Lidl had a money off coupon on the Lidl Plus app.
At the current prices of the Aldi and Lidl chunky soups, it's worthwhile (if you can afford the initial out-lay) to stock up with a dozen cans or so. I know you may only save pennies doing it this way but at least you have them in for emergency, and if there are any powercuts this coming winter, at the very least you can eat the soup cold. It's the same also with baked beans, you can eat them cold too!
@@1aberbeeg Hi Phil, you may enjoy eating your beans or soup cold. However if you like hot/warm for £9 to £10 or even less you can purchase a single camping gas hob. The gas cannisters for them are very cheap too. Failing that a Hexamine cooker is even more compact and are what we used to use in the Armed Forces please ensure you use them on a piece of metal or on the sink draining board. All the best.
Totally agree, after the chunky beef stew review I went straight to Aldi and bought a few of both beef and chicken. I have a few tea lights to heat them if power goes out
If there is power cuts though we will likely be warned in advance when it will be. I assumed it would be overnight. But no that's not the case. It's going to be around teatime. So have a main meal for lunch and do sandwiches for tea. Freezers are ok for up to 6 hours apparently. As long as you don't open it.
@@1aberbeeg ohh yeah 👍🏻 when we were little our Mum used to make cheesy mash with cheese grated on top and browned off under the grill with cold baked beans 🎉 we loved it 👍🏻
As a non meat eater I buy Bramwells lentil soup. It's thick, tasty and very filling and only 45p a tin. Bramwells minestrone cup a soup is also the best cup a soup I've tasted and again only 45p for 4 sachets.
Gareth, I have said before most of the cost for Heinz products goes towards advertising. I will give that Aldi one a go next time in their store. I have a Morrison 5-minute walk away and was in there yesterday and saw their so-called saver cheap tomato soup was 79p which was about half that price a few months ago. Everything seems to be going up even the cheaper stuff which is scary.
Lots of people at my local Tesco have switched to buying their own brand of soups instead of Heinz but the problem now is Tesco putting up the cost of their own brand too , as it went up from 50pence a can for veg soup or chicken soup to 65pence a can and that happened recently due to Tesco running low on stock and not being able to restock it quick enough.
This is why Aldi and Lidl are better. There is a legal cap on food pricing in Germany which is where their headquarters is. This law applies to both in every country. They both admit that they charge a bit more than they need to but they also pay more to shop floor staff than some of the others pay supervisors.
Unfortunately they are no longer making a profit and have been for some time absorbing all cost. Business energy cost for goods production has gone up at farmers level and tin cans are in short supply due to cost
I was conditioned to be a "brand snob" from a young age, but being a stingy northerner it never made sense to spend more on brands, until I tried the cheaper alternatives (Back in the 90's/early 00's) and the taste difference was huge. Over the past cpl years having to watch the pennies (& obviously more so now!) I've found myself trying supermarket own brands more and more, and like you say, they have definitely caught up in the taste department and still obliterate the big brands in price. Some branded foods still reign supreme for me (eg Heinz Tomato Ketchup) but I guess that's because I haven't found the right alternative yet 😂
Heinz tommy K is unequalled👌🏻 I was gutted when McDonalds started using their own rubbish so always grab a few extra when in other “outlets” that still have the Heinz pouches to keep in the car😉
Maybe it's just me but I always think soup tastes nicer/stronger cold than when it's heated up. I'll open up a tin or carton and have a taste and think MMM but when I have it hot it just seems .....less. But then I love cold baked beans straight out of the tin too! 😀
The Aldi soups are great and a fraction of the price of the branded ones. If you want more of a home made tasting soup the Yorkshire Provender Roast Chicken Soup is the best I’ve tried. I even bought it for Christmas Day as a starter and everyone thought it was home made. It’s not cheap but it’s definitely a winner in our house.
I've tried Aldi bramwell soup since the prices have been going crazy I'd never had them before must have been a label snob ! not any more tho it's same with the cornflakes absolutely lovely thanks Gareth for doing the comparisons
Great review ! Makes me a little angry that some so called brands are still charging a premium for the name. Also worth pointing out that Aldi are still making a profit at £0.72 vs £1.70. Nothing against manufacturers making money, that’s what they do, but a little bit of compassion and recognition that their customers might be struggling wouldn’t go amiss.
Gareth, superb vlog. You're providing a superb service with your comparison vids. You're certainly making me more conscious of price comparisons when I go shopping. Big brand products are living on their names I fear. We'll done, bro. Give'em hell! Jimmy in Dublin.
Nice one. Actually a fan of the Big Soups so this one dragged me back in (have missed a few recently - sorry). What an eye opener. Keep up the good work.
Nearly a pound difference!!!! That's a massive saving for someone on a low budget like me. Thanks for highlighting this, I've virtually stopped buying Heinz soups since watching your channel mate. Apart from Heinz mulligatawny which I love, I haven't found a better supermarket brand replacement for that yet. Someone prove me wrong :)
Yet another interesting comparison to prove we don't need to spend BIG money in order to enjoy many things - thanks mate. I'll give this soup a go. The only thing you've reviewed that I can't find is the Bramwells Baked Beans which you reckoned were good - no ALDI around here seems to stock them! Regards, Dave
Gareth, I went to Morrisons yesterday and their own brand soup has gone up from 40p or 45p earlier in the year to 85p now!!! Shocking!! I decided to pass obviously and buy the economy brand from ASDA for 24p
Morrisons is an expensive store now. My mum shopped there when I was a teenager and I’m sure it was because they had really good prices back then. I went there the other week for a change and my shop broke the £100 mark, which it’s never done before at Aldi, Asda or Tesco
Another great video. Your kids should know how proud of their Father they should be. You make 53K people smile with your videos. God bless you and your family x
I was under the impression Vidal Sassoon was sponsoring you, you should really have a lot more subs, this market research is invaluable to many of us, loyalty to named brands is no more, they are ripping us off big time, please keep doing this you are needed.
Hi Gareth a great review as always, I started buying tesco's chunky soup a couple of years ago and i can't tell the difference and a lot of things like Heinz and so many more have put the price up so high and i can afford to buy but it's the principal of in not going to buy a tin of soup for £1.70 and tesco's is a £1.00 🍻🙏
Just had the Aldi beef version for dinner, lovely for a tinned soup. I did note that mine was 7 months out of date though as it had been lurking at the back of our food cupboard for a couple of years. Tasted great still. 😆👍
Leftover chicken carcass from Sunday dinner , any veg from the veg rack(onions, potatoes, carrots etc) a couple of stock cubes, bung it all in the pressure cooker for 15 mins with some water job done🙂
Hi, Irene and I just recently found your channel and absolutely love it. You provide a fantastic service for people with maybe less money than others. We noticed you have in the background a lager/beer dispenser and wondered if you have done a video on it, apologies if you have already, if not could you maybe do one in the future. Thanks. All the best. Steve from Perth 'Scotland Nil'.
The outcome doesn't surprise me ,Heinz stopped being worth the price difference some time ago I think .Pretty surprised to know there really is no difference at all though .Of course home made is the best ,if you want to go through the process of cooking chicken , boiling bones for stock ,peeling and chopping all the veg ,messing about with herbs ,seasoning ,thickening etc .But if all you want is a quick ,simple lunch ,a tin of soup makes all the sense in the world .And at 70p , it's probably not going to break the bank either .
@@stephenguppy7882 Totally agree with Stephen, home made soup is the best, but the cooking time compared to a decent tin of soup in a microwave for 3min 40 seconds, which is hard to beat on value.
People claiming no difference in taste are spinning things imo. Heinz IS notoriously expensive but imo the tastiest...it's what you want cheap and cheerful and a little lacking or pay the extra for better taste. With the price difference I go for store brand and big them up. But to claim there's no difference in taste is a little silly
Trust your Judgement, Gareth. When opening the tins they looked exactly the same. You confirmed the taste test. I now buy Aldi or Lidl soups. No complaints with either. Great review as always, many thanks to you 👍👏😉
I have been away to sunny climes for 3 weeks. Went shopping to fill fridge today and was staggered at price changes. They say inflation is running at 10% this year. Well I beg to differ. My staples have on average bond up 7% in 3 weeks!! Love your channel. I think the addition of recent price changes would be an extra string to your bow and more subscribers. 😍😍😍
Hi ya. Thank you for the video. I was brought up on heinze, but I'm not paying their prices. I appreciate all the work you put into these comparisons and posting them for us
Really great comparison a quick recipe for homemade soup which we really like is a packet of celery, packet of leeks,1 medium onion, 2 veg oxo cubes salt and pepper and a tablespoon of mixed herbs then top the pan up with potatoes in a large pan fill with water 25mm from the top in the biggest pan you have boil till soft then blend with a stick blender to the required constantly end enjoy we normally get about 6 large bowls all the ingredients are from any supermarket = £ 3:50 = 58p a large bowl we love it and worth a try keep up with the great video 👏👏👍👍
I sometimes make what I call 'cheater's soup'. Last week I bought some yellow label butternut squash. I chopped up 1 onion and added it to some some chicken stock cubes and put it in my slow cooker. I managed to make 4/5 generous sized portions of soup. I always look out for reduced pre- prepared veggies and in my supermarket and use them to make soup too! Just make sure you have some stock cubes in your cupboard be it chicken, lamb, ham or whatever!
Glad you did this only last week I bought hubby the Heinz one just thinking it would be better, even though I’m a big Aldi fan. I’ve been shopping at Lidl this week and I tell you they’ve upped their game product quality wise, they use to be cheaper than Aldi but tbh there’s not much in it now pretty much the same price.
Great review again gaz helping people in hard times amazing things ur doing😉👍any chance doin a mince pie comparison if you like mince pies that is lol... all the best keep it up......love what ya doing....
5:20 Well done Gareth. I don't think you needed to say that as from all the reviews you have always appeared unbiased to me....Sometimes "cheaper is best", at times "the dearest" then there is the "I seriously can't tell the difference". Good on you for not accepting offers......this is why you have such a massive following....
I think I've said similar b4 on here, but those Aldi/Lidl chunky soups, make a great base for a stew or casserole, particularly when done in the slow cooker. Add some chicken (or whatever), some herbs & spices & you've got a cheap, tasty meal.
Keep these videos coming mate, as someone whose had a bit of a downturn in personal circumstances over the last year and needs to watch the pennies right now you've given me many great finds that, yes, are just as good as the name brands. As for Lidl... it's perfectly fine, I've only gone there the once as the nearest one is 20 miles away, but to be honest there's nothing there that you can't find just as good in ALDI.
Hi Gareth, it's a fact that prices are increasing. A you know I work for Aldi down here in North Wales, price rises are not showing any signs of abating just yet, but this will happen and prices will stabilise and reduce on certain items. My advice to your viewers is buy a cheap chest freezer and load it up, if you can afford to, buy and extra can and store them up. I'm eating fray bentos pies that I paid less than £1 for 3 years ago. Food is a commodity. Canned and dried foodstuffs will store for years.
I dont think Heinz is anything special these days, I changed about 3 years ago. I always bought their cream of tomato soup, but it changed and it's sour not cream of tomato at all. I would recommend Lidl cream of tomato it's beautiful, and even if you want to make it more creamy, dab a bit of cream in there, but for the price brilliant. You will probably think it's weird but 1/2 can of cream of tomato soup poured over a Holland's meat & potato pie, is heaven. 😂😂😂😂
@@321dunkduncan it's like sour soup now, awful. I actually spent more money putting cream and flavour into it then ended up throwing it away. The Lidl brand, not sure if the name but it's the only one they do is delicious, not of salt and it's lo. vely
you are doing a great job, i certainly will be straying from Heinz it's a no brainer £1 a can! in these uncertain times your reviews are great help and saving us a few Quid well done mate.
You have done a few tins of soup comparisons Gaz, which have been good, but what about Cup-a-soups? Just a thought. Not surprised with this comparison. Paying for the name again. All the best
Hiya Gareth I always look forward to your reviews. I always feel you are just dead honest and no bullshit and I just admire that. I live in Ireland things have gone up a bit here too but from looking at a few of your videos recently it seems that prices in the UK have really skyrocketed. I really dont know how people are supposed to manage these days God knows it's hard enough trying to keep a roof over your head and trying to keep warm. Thanks for the uploads.
Another masterclass on the big names v the own brand foods. I love watching you and your comparisons. I actually already buy these Aldi Bramwell soups and can highly recommend the Lamb & vegetable version, I add a teaspoon of mint sauce to it for added flavour and its bloody gorgeous. So the big question is why are the big name brands so expensive, well mainly because of marketing and advertising. Heinz have been a household name around the world for decades and that's what you are paying for. Obviously Aldi themselves don't make this soup or any other food product, they have a manufacture they buy from and have it packaged, labeled and delivered specifically for their own market. I'm unsure who actually makes this soup, it could actually be Heinz but I suspect its a major UK independent producer. On a footnote did you guys know that Tesco's own branded bread and rolls etc are made by Warburtons or Kingsmill ? It's a fact.
Been buying the Aldi soups for a long time and they're good! Try the Lamb sometime mate! All of Heinz and Kellogs products are going through the roof with price. Why pay it they're just not any better . Two or three times the price is a joke. Keep up the good work mate, you're a star!
Good review Gaz.I used to take soup fishing with me in a flask sometimes.I bought some Spaten lager for the first time the other day in bottles. On offer with Ocado. It's £6 for 4 500ml bottles 👍
Good one! Big price difference. I must admit even with the “big names” Heinz etc, I’m not over keen on having soup with meat in, but I’ll have to see if they do any all veggie soup choices. 😅 It isn’t because I’m vegetarian! ❤
'Where's your MONEY going??' You could see this just from a culinary perspective (and i like yours! You do a foodie channel and in the end it's just the taste and the health moment😁) But you can go two steps further - where do you *want* your money to go? To a European family owned company which is happy with a margin of 1-2% of their turnover or a US based multinational financed by hedge funds which demand 20+% margin on their investment? When you start to watch your videos under such aspects - Aldi everywhere has the commitment to buy as much locally as possible - a company like Heinz doesn't care. It's 100% up to you!
Family owned company? You make it sound like it's Mrs Miggins in her tiny cottage preparing food when the European stuff is just as mass produced as Heinz
@@keithparker1346 Ok, no problem to accept that huge companies like that often have to work along the same lines just because of economy of scales. But then, sometimes it is easier in family run companies to install guidelines which are not 98% driven by shareholder value. Aldi as an example has published company guidelines, which should rule all company decisions. Avoidance of unnecessary trash is one of them and at least here in their home area it is visible - they try to use more material for packing which can be recycled like carton and glass. Another one is avoidance of transport, which means in one segment locally produced food when possible. Ok, we will never have bananas or pineapple from Northern Germany, but you get the idea...
Thanks Gareth for doing these comparisons it's a great help, I must say I find the Aldi Bramwell soup range very tasty and a decent price, the price of Heinz soup is a joke and, the cost of living issue is becoming a major concern
Thanks for this lad. I always make up a hamper, for my son to take home on Boxing Day. Always put in a couple of tins of Heinz big soup. I will get some Bramwells instead.
Love that you do these comparisons for us as these days we are all looking to save the pennies 👍 and have you ever gone to Costco you do have to buy in bulk but sometimes you can get great deals 👍 until next time take care 😁
Gotta love Aldi. I'm so fortunate to have them on my high street. I like taking friends there and showing them all the good quality and bargain stuff and they are always surprised.
Things really have changed - Aldi, although their prices are also going up on a weekly/daily basis - do really good products, but last week a bag of M&S potatoes were cheaper, gone up by another 10p today though - still cheaper than Aldi! A bit out of your food realm but I am a Washing Liquid snob but Persil and other brands are RIDICULOUS! Any recommendations from you or your subscribers? I used to hate shopping around because I had to but now I do it because I HATE paying over inflated prices x You're doing a great job
Hi there love the video haven’t been on for a long time because we haven’t had Wi-Fi because somebody drove into the Telegraph poll but really enjoyed this video
Not in the least bit surprised, I'm lucky I have an Aldi and a Lidl close by to where I live so I use both store on a regular basis. The one thing I like Lidl for is their in store bakery their pastries are so good😋 But I've jumped of track a bit 🤣 I fell out with Heinz years ago when I realised their products were no better than a lot of their cheaper competitors, love your channel mate, keep proving me right.😁👍
I love this Heinz Chicken Big Soup 👍🏻nice piece of French stick with butter on 👍🏻 Your verdict made a big difference for me , because I only buy this for treat , a tin of soup for a treat ? the worlds going mad 😂 thanks for the vid . as this is one of my favourite soups 👍🏻 will try the Bramwells .
Totally agree! There is not difference and no point paying more for the same and if it isn't as good then you can change it to your own liking! Love these videos!
We have always done the weekly shop in Tesco, but their prices are now verging on the ridiculous, also the same as you, we do not have a Lidl store but, we do have an Aldi, and I'm seriously considering a change of shopping habit, keep up the good work and I look forward to watching more of your excellent comparison videos.
Always used to buy big soups at £1, today I went to Lidl and bought their Minted Lamb Chunky Soup for 71p, bloody delicious, great lunch at work, filling too.! 😊
Well speaking for myself I'm really grateful that you do these videos it helps me see the difference in prices. So thankyou for these , hope you and your family are keeping well God bless you all.
What a great service you are providing here. When I was young, 45 years ago, my mother worked for a food company in the NE producing canned food for numerous companies. In most cases the only difference was the labels and stamps on the cans….but the retail prices between the labels was ridiculous as here. I remember the President of Ford Motors being asked on television why his cars cost so much more in the UK than elsewhere and his answer was “Because you are willing to pay this”. We have all gone for far too long simply paying what is asked rather than what something is actually worth. I have had a “connection” with Aldi since they first began operations in the UK and to some considerable degree they had to overcome a British snobbishness to get to where they are today.
I prefer heinz soup but that's just me i've always liked heinz products. Top tip if you buy a few tins at a time they are discounted and are cheaper to buy
Oh i just had Bramwells Chunky Chicken And Vegetable Soup for Lunch Today. Yesterday i had the Bramwells Chunky Beef And Vegetable Soup. My opinion they are much better than the Heinz Brands. You can always add extra seasoning to Aldi soups if they are lacking but Price wise its a No Brainner. I have the Chunky Lamb And Vegetables to try at one day as i have not had that yet. Lamb is my fav meat. There is also a Minted Lamb version aswell.
Gareth, you must have the metabolisim of a mouse with all the pie and curry comparisons you have been posting lately. Love the channel mate. Just waiting for you to start doing the make up comparisons🤣
I remember hearing years ago that heinz dont actually have their own factories, other companies make their stuff for them. Stands to reason those factories would make the expensive and the cheap ones to keep it more cost-effective for them. I worked in an egg factory about 30 years ago. The same eggs went in to boxes to all the supermarkets (free-range and battery, they were all the same - i'm sure they've clamped down on that now).
I've bought Heinz all my life and I have changed. I also have swapped out Sainsburys for Aldi/Lidl not because I'm desperately short of money but because their food is great! The higher end stuff at those supermarket compete on quality with anywhere.
I went to Aldi on the back of this vid and tried their Chicken and Vegetable and found a dip in quality compared to Heinz, not a huge drop off but enough of a drop to not buy again. If you want to go the budget friendly route I recommend Asda which to my taste holds up in quality.
