This horse drawn Great Western manure spreader had two controls that the diver operated from both sides of the seat. Getting that seat in position allows for setting the controls in the right places. Thanks for coming along in this rebuild of a 110 year old Smith Manufacturing manure spreader.
Spring for mugs, tee-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies.

A story I heard years ago was the “new kid” in the garage was sent to get the can of backlash out of the mechanics tool box. When he came back empty handed he was sent out to a parts store and one phone call led to another as he was sent from place to place before one old guy at a garage that had been around since the 30’s handed him a crusty old can of 90 weight gear lube. I’m pretty sure the guy telling me the story in the late 80’s was the “new kid” 20 years before when I was toddler.

My personal philosophy on restoring old wagons, farm equipment, wooden railroad cars, etc. The original items were work-a-day pieces, and it was understood that mechanical wear and tear would reduce them to unusable junk long before rot would be much of a factor. Paint was more for esthetics than a preservative. Today, we have significantly fewer examples left than what were originally produced. We want to restore and preserve these remaining pieces for as long as possible. Few of them will see the amount of hard use that they would have back in the day. We therefore preserve and paint the components to keep them from rotting rather than wearing. Society is different now. We route and finish edges to keep people from getting injured and suing. Just the way I see it.

I am satisfied to say that I recall the springtime 'tradition' of hauling manure to the fields before the hay came up too far.... We boys loaded the old spreader by hand, pulled it to the fields with the '46 Ford tractor and in the fullness of time, the barnyard was relieved of its winter accumulations. Lots of work, but... my Dad... and his Dad... and who knows how many generations before did that same task... Due to circumstances, my boys did not have 'opportunity' to be part of that tradition. Yes, Satisfied. Thanks D & D!!

There is a common saying in factories: "It looks good from my house." Which means it is good enough to pass. As a bit of a perfectionist myself, it wasn’t the easiest to turn that part off, and as soon as something is good enough, send it down the line.

Yesterday I was watching a video of a man exploring the wooded section of his farm in Vermont. He discovered a rusted skeleton of a manure spreader. It appeared to have a metal frame instead of wood, but it still had the two rotor pieces across the back with the attendant gear works. He wondered is it was some type of planting machine. The video was labeled something like: Look what I am finding on my farm.

Another great video and I thank you for sharing it with us. I wonder if those seat irons might have been made on a Friday or a Monday, if anyone remembers the old saw about never buying anything made on a Friday as the workers are thinking about going to drink beers and on Monday, they are regretting drinking all the beers. That spreader is going to be a working piece of art when you are done.

I was always taught that you do the job right or do not do it at all. I worked in a Class 8 truck factory for 10 plus years back in the 80s and 90s and on one of the factory walls was written (Quality is job one) in big bold writing. Every day I would walk by that wall, and say it to myself and give it two thumbs up. I sure do miss that wall.

I like the paint scheme, it's that extra "touch" you're known for!
