Where to Draw the Line | Lining in Animation

Why do we draw lines around characters? Do we need to? If we don't, what challenge does it create and if we do, what style of line should we choose? I attempt to somewhat investigate these questions in this video.
This inbetween is the first of my shorter videos (at least I hoped it would be shorter). It's just a result of research from the key videos that have gotten me thinking about a topic.

This is why I really love when artists have a sketchy style. You can just see every stroke they took to get to the finished piece and I just love it. Clean styles are cool but I just love sketchy styles all the more

Made in Abyss does the same type of thing with dangerous creatures being drawn very roughly; and the more human or orderly characters are drawn with static, uniform lines.

My question is how we can make an animation be as expressive as possible while keeping the ‘contemporary‘ style, so it looks attractive to the general audience, not only us artists.
@Juusokakku
@Juusokakku 4 года назад
One way is treating ink and paint -phase with the same level of importance as during the days of Cel animation. Those lines were carefully painted with beautiful strokes, so while they lost the energy of the pencil drawing, it gained something else in it's place.

I don’t know what type of animation do you mean, but I think Francisco Schepperd might be doing something similar to this. I recommend looking at a music video called, “The Music Scene” by Blockhead, but then again, I might be wrong about this so sorry.

“A pencil is the simplest tool of any you can have, it’s a little stick at the end that makes a mark... but there’s a line that goes straight down your arm that connects to your heart. You take something that’s hidden from others, and you reveal it to them by drawing...” -Glenn Keane

When Isao Takahata passed away, a friend of mine sent me your video, and I really liked it. Now this video got recommended to me... and it was just what I needed... A lot is being said and shown in this video; but this is why 2D is one of my most favorite animation technique out there.... not only because it's YOU and the paper (or how it used to be), it gets really personal and you start living through your work, that's also why I ADORE watching pencil tests, full of life and natural imperfections, that makes it perfect. Thank you for putting this video together, great thoughts, great movie recommendations and your soft and calm voice was also something that I needed. I'd love to see more videos like this from you. Subbed!.

I wish you showed Disney's old colored line style. Lauren Faust said her inspiration for MLP's colored lines came from old Disney films like Snow White and Pinnochio which used colored lines instead of black. It was much more difficult back then, with each line requiring a different physical ink blot.

Any-Mation that’s great, the level of research and editing on this is already so high, I’d be fascinated to see what can be done with more time! But great work on fitting in this quality on a side project, it’s tough to do! Oh wow really? Thank you so much! I’m glad you liked my film! Yes, the boiling line was a very conscious choice to keep the characters feeling alive... all done on paper so it meant a lot of drawings! :)

No this is where you're wrong drawing is not something anybody can just do you're talking about art here the one thing you really need to get this going it's ambitious. You need to be ambitious enough otherwise it's never going to happen you got to find motivation you got to find something inspires you to do it. Otherwise you would never develop the skills for it therefore you won't be creating art you'll just be doing something else besides what you should be doing. Which is art that is what you should be doing that's what that is what you should be thinking of doing art should be the only motivation and ambitious you would ever need the sole purpose of doing art or drawing something is for the art itself nothing else that's where you're going to get your ambitious from and you're motivation and what would expire you to keep going and doing more and more and you'll see there's never going to end. Be ready to be alone and be happy for it for your imagination has no end and you're never going to run out of ideas. There are so many fields in the art field that you can get into if you get tired of one or you have completed everything you wanted to complete in that one for you and you just want to try something else and get more creative that way. Ambitious and passion for art is what you need it is the key to being an artist.

I mean clean animation in The Amazing World of Gumball is incredible, but nothing gets me going more than rough, bold, sketchy,closely line work. It just looks so organic and natural. Organic things aren't as clean. I really dislike the popular thin lines being used now. I get why they are used, but it is so boring.

It's sad to see how sterile a lot of western animation has become. There is nothing wrong with CGI if the story subject matter fits it, but it is so often applied to projects and subject matter where it is impairing the expressiveness and emotional impact of the final product. Creating for instance a a sterile mechanized dystopian future or animating a mindbogglingly complex but precision assembly line is something 3D modelling would lend itself to wonderfully but trying to create an abstract work where two spring butterflies swirl around each other and morph into a young couple of lovers dancing through a field would be next to impossible to do well with 3D modelling. The death of cinematic classic 2D animation here in the west is a real tragedy that I hope is not repeated elsewhere in the world.

Spiderman Into the Spider verse has that creative touch I haven't really seen much in CG. Everything has so much energy and life to it.
