I found my sheep skull beside the road, on the way to school one day. Not rural in the slightest, very odd place to find a perfectly clean sheep skull. But, I picked it up, carried it around school for a day, took it home and finished cleaning it a bit

@Stuntovic
@Stuntovic 4 года назад
@@spydroplayz2094 I''l reply in English so others can read it too. I mostly find my skulls from dead animals (as in road kill or carcasses in the forest, rural areas). I havent found many skulls just laying around in the forest or something like that. So most of the time you have to get your hands dirty. At home I have a trophy closet full with all kinds of critters. A lot of birds, which I found all in the Netherlands. Cats, dogs and deer I find mostly in Poland. We go on holiday there every year. The forests an natural areas are like 10 times what we got here in the Netherlands. Only birds you find far more here than any other animals. So I suggest looking for road kill and hope the skull is in tact.

My local antique mall is amazing. They have multiple sets of longhorn horns, antlers, deer skulls and other skulls as well. This one booth has a beaver, bear, skunk, fox, mink etc skulls and I got my pheasant and rabbit skull from there. I also just picked up a absolutely GORGEOUS set of ram horns from there and they were only $45! The skulls they have can get pricey tho, the beaver itself is 50 but it comes with the mandible and I love when skulls come with them.

For carving bones and skulls, do you recommend the bones be 'younger' or does it not matter how old the bones are? I have access to a lot of deer bones from years of hunting, but many of the bones have been weathered and seem more brittle. Are these still okay to carve onto, or do you recommend newer/younger bones?

I love what you do man! Thank you for sharing. My dad in law hunts and during deer season he would just lop the antlers off for the dog and leave the skulls as waste... Occasionally he’d share those antlers or caps with me so I can’t complain too much haha. I look around a lot when I get the time and so far I have found a deer and possum on my own :) It is a lot of fun just looking, even if you come up empty! I live in the lower desert is Arizona close to a dried up riverbed. People like to use the area to dump their dead animals. I've found dog, horse, cow, sheep and several small mammal skulls there. My husband and I wend down there the other day and I came how with 2 horse skulls for myself and 2 intact hooves with the coffin bone still inside for my mother who is a farrier and wanted them for educating her clients on the importance of making sure their horses feet are always taken care of. I'm planning another trip down there with a friend to get a few more skulls I spotted but didnt have the means to remove them from the rest of the body.

What the heck is up with VA? Why would they care if you picked up road kill? Pick them up anyway who are they to tell you different? Just going to waste otherwise. If you want skulls make friends with a local trapper. He will have dozens if not hundreds of unwanted skulls in his throw out pile already skinned. Nice variety too.

Where I live used to be rural but so many people have moved over here that it's now pretty densely populated, what I'm saying is we have tons and tons of Roadkill. Dogs, cats, deer, boars, coyotes and one time I found a really good bore that had a big tusks I pulled over to try and get it in my car but it was so heavy I couldn't lift it, I left it there and the next time I drove by it was gone. Seems like such a waste to hit these animals and just leave them there..

Good afternoon! Can you please help. Tell me what you clear (soak) the skull found in the forest so that they do not have a smell in the end and are snow-white. I am from Russia and by virtue of translation into Russian I do not understand the names of some reagents, but can they have some common names they have which can be searched in Google? Thank you!
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 6 лет назад
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. The best thing you can do is put the skull in a container of warm water and let in "macerate". Keep changing the water every few days till the water stays clear and does not smell. To whiten the bone you can use hydrogen peroxide. I have a video coming out in about a week on macerating so that should help!

Let me add another area to look for anyone looking for (free) skulls. Look in the woods anywhere near a water source around trees. I’ve been out here on lake eufuala for a job for about a week and have already found two boar skulls, two turtle shells, a dear skull and a coyote puppy skull. Just walking woods trails about a quarter mile away from the water and looking around trees.

U.S. Skull Hunter May I ask why you haven’t tried the dermestid? With as much work as you have, they would be such an asset to you.
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 6 лет назад
Well quite a lot a reasons actually. I am not sure if you have a colony yourself but they are A LOT or work to maintain. You have to have the correct housing for them, the correct heated space, they require something to each year round, they are susceptible to mites and other disease, you are limited to how many skulls your colony can manage at once, they leave the skull greasy, they leave pupa shells in crevices, and they are known for escaping and infesting areas. Maceration is so much more simple. Water and a heat source. That's it. You can do as many skulls at once as you want. and when you are done that's it, no maintaining a colony. Maceration leaves no pupa shells and degreses while it is macerating. Probably a longer response but yeah, I would never go the bug route unless I was working on smaller animals. Hope that helps :)

Have you ever been stopped and asked to show your permit?
@usskullhunter
@usskullhunter 6 лет назад
Well yes kinda, I had the local game warden come to my house and do an inspection of all the skulls I had. I specifically asked him to come though, just to kinda stay ahead of the curve. He was very nice and helpful and in the end it helped me feel more confident I had everything on the up and up :)
