Its not pure silver, and its not plated either. When i use a chemical test it comes back as about 85% pure. Thanks for watching!!

Instead of using acid on the Mylar sheets from keyboards I use hydrogen peroxide & white distilled vinegar 1:1 ratio & low heat. The mix is used for pbc etching Takes about 4 hours & its safer. This mix will turn a lot of metals into a powder but it will not touch gold so be shore to use some type of Pyrex dish for this & do not lay the sheets flat also find some way to stand them up so the silver goes to the bottom instead of searing to the Mylar sheets thought I would share

A mylar is a thin plastic sheet that is inside computer keyboards, and button panels like on microwaves. They have silver stuck to them with adhesive to form flat circuits that are also flexible. Thanks for watching!

Sorry about that, this was more of a where to find not how to remove video. I take a pair of cutters and clip off the ends that have the silver on it. I am not terribly precise as the other metals get removed in the acid bath. Thanks for watching!

An IBM model M Keyboard sells for close to $200.00 on ebay because it is vintage and a lot of Packard Bell Keyboards are pretty rare , I,m not agents scrapping , I had to to eat half of my life , but knowing the value of any vintage Computer items is important , I will scrap non working keyboards , radiators , copper , some Cell Phones , I just try to keep in mind if it is worth more as a working possibly rare computer item , I still gave you a thumbs up for the video :) QC

Yup, I agree. If you watch more than a couple of my videos you'll see that is usually one of the first things I mention is that scrap is the lowest value of an item. I have a whole video on cell phones and laptops for scrappers showing them that it is more profitable to sell than scrap. Its one of those things that you would think would be common sense to check the value of something before you scrap it so you tend to forget to mention it once in a while. Thanks

i can only see this being worth while if silver is 50 bucks an ounce or more. how much time and money on chemicals do you spend to get one ounce? do you think you could just find some job and spend all the money on bullion? unless you get a truck load of scrap and don't have to go out looking for it and it's all free and the amount of effort and cost needed to extract the silver is miniscule this hardly seems worth it.

Oh ok, they can be found in VCR's as well as TV's and many other places. The copper is kind of like a cap. If you plan on selling them as silver contacts, buyers understand that will be there. You can also remove the copper and other metals in a hot HCL bath or with nitric acid. Thanks!

This is difficult to use effectively and there are a lot of things that are more expensive in there, palladium and litium gold etc. But, there are also a bunch of hazardous materials and environmental polutatants that must be taken care of. Mercury switches, flame retardants and other persistent organic poisons. Take care! All the poison must be taken care of, so you need to be careful! You can find a lot of shit that are not good for you and the environment you live in! Maybe you could need a complimentary video?

you non thear is one thing the most people do not no about breakers and that is that if a breaker blows or trips its agenst the law in most stated to keep using it the law states that the breaker may be turned back on only for temp use in the case of an emergency or for a short time till you can go to the store and buy a new one and have it installed or till a repair tech and replace it and if it pops again after resetting then you are not allowed to reset it a secand time. dumb but true

I am (very) new to scrapping - just a hobby for some old stuff I have lying around. I am about to scrap an old panasonic tv/vcr combo unit. Any suggestions on what to look for? Is the board inside the remote worth throwing in my circuit board pile? Does the vcr portion have anything worth getting out?
@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 10 лет назад
Hi and thanks for watching! The big money there is going to be in the copper yolk on the tube and the degaussing wire that goes around the tv tube. Remotes I just break open with a hemmer, trying to not spend too much time on them. They can be good for the low grade pile but sometimes they have gold plate or silver mylars. The VCR portion will have some aluminum, some lite iron, a few copper bearing motors, even a relay or two with some copper and silver in them. That's about all. Best of luck to you!

Hey, is there any value in pewter? And how do you know if something is solid silver or silver plated, and if plated--is there a way to get the plating separated from the rest of the metal? I'm talking about large pieces, like large engraved bowls given as awards, not tiny pieces of jewelry. Thanks! Great video!
@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 10 лет назад
Hi and thanks for watching!! Great questions!! I have actually not yet come across any pewter and it is not on my scrap yards metals list so I am not much help there. As for the silver, anything solid silver will say sterling, ster, .925 or have a lions head stamped on it somewhere. Plated objects usually say that they are plated or say SP on them. Other objects that you suspect might be silver will need to be tested and unfortunately that stuf is best learned by research. Coins have specific years that they are silver or partially silver. To get silver plate off the best way I have heard of is reveres electroplating. Hope that helps a little

Contacts from switches & relays that I've repaired were not solid silver, but silver plated copper (sometimes brass). When the contacts are worn and blackened with carbon build-up, then I use a small piece of sandpaper or a file to clean up the contact. The silver is very thin and the underlying metal comes through quickly. Maybe there are some very high end switches that contain thicker plating, but they would still use the minimum amount necessary.
@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 10 лет назад
Interesting, I have found only a few instances where that is the case. In many cases I find a silver button with a copper cap on the back but the copper is usually the thin piece. I have processed about a pound of silver contacts so far, removing the base metals either attached to the silver with an acid peroxide bath and then smelting into ingots. They are consistantly assayed at 80% or more purity by my local jeweler. Where are you getting your contacts from? Thanks!

Buddy Smith hI And thanks for watching! There are two ways that I know of, and each depends on your comfort level with acids and how much caution you are prepared to take. The best and fastest and most dangerous way is to simply remove all the other metals with nitric acid as seen in drew metalsmiths videos. The slower method (may take weeks) and safer method is to use HCL and peroxide in a 50:50 mix. Both will remove all the base metals but the only way to purify the silver is with additional steps using nitric acid.

I honestly have not kept complete records. I do not sell any precious metals I keep them all. Last year, if I had to guess I would say maybe 2 -3 ounces of gold and a lb or two of silver. The trouble with the gold is that I often throw it in with each batch I do purification runs. Thanks!

@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 9 лет назад
+Colten Mortensen Hi and thanks for watching! I my humble opinion, if its free, its worth scrapping. I have a video coming out within the week about scrapping flat screens. There is not a whole lot in them, keep in mind the fact that the newer the item, the less value it has and flat screens are the newest in television tech so they tend to not have much. That being said, it is also true that higher end flat screens will have more or better materials. Lowe end ones will use more steel where Sony and other more expensive ones will use more aluminum and also have more gold plating in them. As for earth elements, there are 118 can you be more specific?

There is no quick an easy. Finding sources of scrap varies greatly depending on your local area. Populations, industry, socioeconomic factors, they all play into it. The best advice I can give is to put ads on craigslist and as many free ad spots in your area as possible. Thanks!

They look gold I compared them to brass. Never seen brass sparkle. That's the problem I just cut them and put in a jar, I was going thur them last nite. I was breaking down CRT board and big dial switchs from dryers and washers. I have found gold plated numeric dial on old PCB. Also hear on the old IBM main frame board had a 24k gold ball in there DIP switches. This is the fun in scraping like a teasure hunt

Have you ever tried to scrap silver plated items? I have found you can remove silver from utensils with larger weighted handles or base (knifes, candles). You can either cut the handle with pliers or smash it with a hammer. Not much there, a thin foil of silver, weighted with what looks like clay. If you pick up items for free put them aside and process all at once. It might be worth your while. Ted B
