where do you grab the gi? Like most questions the answer is, "it depends."

Brilliant! Could you please do a short vid on why use turn throws? How do they work and what are the advantages over like a leg grab type throw.

This is the kind of videos I feel in love with this channel, not many of my teachers have explained this to me, why to grab sleeve or elbow.

Hi Shintaro. Thanks a lot for this video. On my next training I will use it. By the way: Most trainers teach only the classic way to touch Uke (right side right side, left hand at the elbow, right hand at height of the shoulder.) New ideas are making us better. 🙂 Have a nice weekend Dirk

hi, enjoying the videos, helping with a lot of techniques and strategies. You mention you are shorter than a lot of your opponents, which is a situation I struggle with (5'6", 98kg) so just wondering else how you nullify that situation?

Your videos are a wonderful reference for writing! The answer to writing a character who does a sport you don’t participate in is to study the hell out of that sport anyways. He does judo so I have to do judo: simple as that. Really gets the creative juices flowing!

Hi Yannis, Isa here responding for Shintaro while we're all social distancing. It depends on what side you're attacking to and how many hands you have on the gi. I would suggest learning to do seoi off of the collar- it's much more versatile.

Also, I have a question: Why is Judo called the, "gentle art"?
@gabehcuodsuoitneterp203
@gabehcuodsuoitneterp203 4 года назад
wanderer5200 Ju = Gentle + Do = Way - it might have to do with it being so gentle for the practitioner but so brutal for the receiver.

@TheJoeMan

"Gentle" as in yielding to strength rather than resisting it with your own. If your opponent pushes you should pull and add your strength to theirs. "Most efficient use of strength."
@jrmbayne
@jrmbayne 4 года назад
Considering the other option at the time was to draw your tanto blade and gut the guy, tossing and restraining your opponent seems much more gentle

It was Ko Uchi Makikomi. Now then, it is good for Judo, but if you do BJJ it is not recomended at mid to high level. Pretty simple move, yet it can lead to a positional disadvatage if your opponent is defeated by it.

It seems that with so much of judo revolving around grabbing the gi, it makes judo a lot less of a practical self-defense art. Sometimes people wear tank-tops or go shirtless, don't wear a belt and so on. Do the practitioners view it as merely a sport, like bowling?
@jestfullgremblim8002
@jestfullgremblim8002 2 года назад
Yes indeed, that's what i do not like about Judo. Now days, practitioners DO see it only as a sport and not as a Martial Art anymore.
