To anyone reading this, I have a tip. I am a goalie and I'd like to throw in my 2 cents upon the matter. The shooting for the ears tactic is all fine and dandy but for a goalie my size ( about 6 foot ) , the only way for that to even come close to working is if they're down in the butterfly. If a goalie is standing up and they have the ability to predict the shot then they will most likely be standing, if you're too close to get it over the goalie's shoulders then of course you'd want to go fivehole or just over the pad. So as a summary, Close up=Above pad or fivehole, Far enough back and the goalie is already down ( shot off of a rebound and good opportunity ) make sure to take advantage of that and take his tips to " aim for the ears " if you will. I hope this helps you and remember, if you can get a pass for an assist and your teammate score then that is just as good as if you score the goal, your team comes first and goals aren't everything. Have a nice day.

that was my thought reading the whole thing, but i also just gave some tips up above, in the end, you probably will never play with anyone seeing these tips, and most the people you play with wont ever get into the comments... why not help out the next generation, both players at shooting and goalies at blocking those shots

A few psychological tips, and personal bonus things to share. 1. First shot you take, pop it right to his ear. If it doesn't go in, you either hit him/her in the head and rattle them, or it goes over the net. If you hit em hard enough, it's cruel, but it makes them second guess the next shot. 2. Only works on your first shot: Score high glove on your first shot, and you're in the goalie's head. He'll second guess the ability of his glove and think about it next time you shoot. You should be able to go high glove on him all day. If he robs you though, stop shooting high glove. 3. Use the backhand! Goalies hate backhand shots because they're hard to read. 4. Don't forget shot fakes. Just a kick of the leg and a dip of the shoulder are enough to get a goalie in the butterfly, usually. High enough out, and you don't have to guess where the pads are going to sit. Additionally, those shoulder spots open up on high.

where I am these goalies are really hard headed so if you do any of this they will just say "lucky shot" and cover that area 3X better than before

some good info here, some thats probably overstated, as a goalie of 11 years, and now still an off and on goaltender ive never once been phased by a helmet or cage shot, helmets are made well and leave you with little to be scared of. i am also with bloxhead, every time i got beat high up (didnt happen often, played 10 years of baseball as a second basemen and catcher as well, i had a good glove...) it only made me work harder at stopping the next one, i never doubted my glove, only my positioning and reflexes which made me work harder. i have talked with many goalies, and ive never heard one say they got down on themselves because a guy beat the, top shelf... that brings me to my next point, if anything, slipping it under our pads make us a THOUSAND times angrier... it always made me so mad to get beat under the pad, pads now days make it so easy to defend the ice, there was rarely an excuse to let one in that was on the ice. as for backhand, you are right on the money, all we can do for those is to make ourselves big and hope to block a badly placed backhand. if you are a righty, shooting on a lefty goalie or a lefty shooting on a full right goalie and can shoot backhand well, accurately, you will dominate that side. purely due to reading the puck as stated... number 4 you are pretty spot on, though i would say you better make it pretty convincing, as you play more, you tend to see fakes a lot, most of them the player decides at the last moment to do and its highly readable as they arent prepeared to really take the shot. but if you practice your fakes and go in knowing how to do them and make them look natural, you will pull the goalie into a butterfly a lot, which gives you that spot he talks about in this video, over the pad, under the glove, rarely do you see goalies that can keep their glove on their pad for long enough to beat an odd lower than expected shot off the ice... you arent far off, just giving my $.02 from the perspective of a goalie who has taken some shots to the mask and played a few games... haha, thanks for your comment, some great discussion points.

Hey, when you're on a breakaway, take a page out of Jussi Jokinen's book: advance on the goalie at a slight angle, stick handle the puck directly in front of your body, then at the last moment, pull the puck all the way to your forehand and snap it just over the goalie's leg pad. I'm going to try to do that more often.
@andrewpersaud4144
@andrewpersaud4144 10 лет назад
loll "more often". Like clean cut breakaways happen that often. jussi himself rarely gets one. only in a shootout will you get that much time to execute and think.

Great point, I was keeping it simple in this video (walk before you run). For the younger players there are a lot of openings, but you are right, once things get more competitive the goalies do not give you much to shoot at. Having the information in this video will help build the foundation for goal scoring (looking for places to shoot, knowing where to shoot, thinking of goalies weaknesses, etc) I will do a more advanced video about making the goalie move soon.

third reason for not shooting top corner all the time is the puck rounds the boards creating a potential breakout for the OTHER team, as in old dogs hockey no one is backchecking. They are in great position to have a mismatched breakaway the other way. Can't count how many times I've seen this happen.

Low shots are also hit the net faster as they don't have to rise as much. Look at Kessel, especially if youre a leafs fan, and how he doesn't go bar down on all his shots. Plus if there's traffic, you can take advantage of it with low shots.

I always go for the above the shoulder because a person first thought is move your head out of the way so they flinch which slows there reaction time down a bit . Have good accuracy nail it there you will score everytime I promise you . I am a goalie too and if he's good with his glove go to the blocker side . High blocker or low blocker .if he's good with both well deke him or go just over the pad or shoulder .

In my league it seems like 5 hole is the way to go. Most of our goalies don't have the flexibility to close that hole. But in adult hockey we aren't the young guys we used to be. I love your videos. I haven't been playing for long, but I'm addicted! Your videos are great for beginners, keep em up.

I agree with it all other then the ear. If a goalie at least 5' (roughly 3'6" on the ice) then the angle the puck will travel to score if he is challenging at all will be in the chest all day long. Other than that remember blocker low hardest for a goalie.

Before I played the video, I had a feeling you would say the best place to shoot is the five hole. So true. Remember you can easily miss over the net, but can never miss under the net. And the best tip is to shoot low because a pad save can give up fat rebounds while a high and wide shot ruins the entire flow with the puck sailing off the glass and back out to center ice.

As a goalie, most of this is true haha. Hardest spot to stop in my opinion is in between the arm blocker side. Goalies have a tendency to almost twist and grab with their arm to stop it instead of just keeping the blocker out in front and knock it away. I think that is another one of those instinct moves and it leads to a goal. Not always true, but watching the NHL and playing, I see it quite a bit.

Hi Jeremy, great video. I'd like to know something. See I'm a lefty and I'm playing left wing. I hate it but my coach is taking the decisions so.... When I'm coming on the left wing where is the best place to shoot ? Since I'm playing left wing, I always end up shooting in the goalie's chest! I'm really frustrated since I don't score anymore. A winger is a winger I should be able to play both but I have trouble making the transition.

and when I'm shooting near angle high like that it helps to aim at the goalies head or ears too. Just something mechanically and from the puck's view that helps. If you get multiple chances coming down the half wall i like to pound far corner low and get the goalie thinking, then later in the game its easier to catch the goalie near side

NowI got to say u do sound like u know your stuff but I do have to disagree with you statement because a goalie doesn't start the from their butterfly. They start standing so in the situation where a player shoot low stick or glove the goalie simply has to slide over into their butterfly to make the easy stomach save.

I have a really big problem with my game. I am a very nice skater (my dad was too) and I am very good at reading the ice and knowing where people are/should be. I rack up assists every year, but I never really seem to score any goals. I play with confidence, not afraid to take the puck up and I can always make a nice pass. I have a backyard rink that I would go and shoot 50-100 times almost every day and I would say that my accuracy is pretty good. The only time I really score is when someone passes me the puck in front of the net which rarely happens because I am the one that usually digs in the corners and gets the puck in front of the net. Any other time I shoot the puck I either hit another player or the goalie saves it. It is a huge flaw in my game and I wish I could just get better at it. Any tips as to what I can do to maybe help myself score more goals, or should I just not worry about it and keep playing as a play maker and just get assists?

I'm the same way, I'm great at reading the goalie and the ice but I can't seem to get the right shots off when I'm in a game situation so I end up passing to a wide open teammate to make the goal

I like playing against guys who shoot high all the time. I keep my glove high, and barely have to move it in order to make the save. In close, the best spot to shoot is 5-hole for sure. As long as you're shooting lower than 11 inches, you have a good chance at a rebound if the goalie gets a pad on it.
