Had a buddy who knew somebody who boosted (stealing) he ended up getting that guy to do a WH40K run actually got a decent haul we calculated it up to $300 he paid $100 and some liquor think they were orks or space marines

Abridged starting process: 1. Acquire the mini rulebook in the starter set via Ebay ($30) 2. Scour your house for D6s. Loot old board games in particular (Free) 3. Google the 40k templates and just cut them out and glue onto cut-out cardboard. (Free, or $0.10 if you don't own a printer) 4. Acquire a codex. (Free/$35) 5. Acquire miniatures. (Unavoidably pricey, but get them for 25% off retail price via online wargaming stores) 6. Buy a set of Army Painter brushes. ($15, as opposed to $8 per brush via GW. Also they're better.) 7. Buy vallejo paints you need ($2.80 per bottle)
Yup! They put the starter scenario in an entirely separate book included in that box. The mini rulebook included is LITERALLY all the rules of the game. The hardcover version is stuffed with fluff and is hardcover, that's literally the only difference: It's a total ripoff.
@@michaelolz I'm only kidding I've got big chaos armies for ALL of the Age of Sigmar and WH40K and I'm stoked for the new predicted Slaanesh (Emeperor's Children) and Chaos (World Eaters) releases. It all works out because most Chaos demons are interchangeable between WH40K and AoS.

My school just started a club for war hammer and it looked really cool, so my mates were playing a game of about 5men each. They gave me a squad, and helped walked me through, I’m now getting a know no fear (as they recommended) and a paint set

I've been slowly (like 4 years slowly) building my Space Marine Arny, and am now building a Tau army as well, I have never played a game, but my painting skills have increased tremendously. I'm looking to begin playing at a Hobby shop nearby in a few months I just have to study the rules and gameplay first
I started up warhammer 40k very recently. I bit the bullet and just bought a pack of every army I was interested in (rip wallet, ramen diet for the next month or so) so I ended up buying a SpaceMarine squad, a pack of Eldar Exarchs, Mechanicus Skiitari, and a Necron infantry. After painting and creating little stories in my head, I found that I liked the Eldar most...soooo I'm now saving up for a Skathach Wraithknight and a Big Army box. Hope I do well.
Preferred enemy wallet.. But you have lots of kill team lists as well. I kinda did the same but I am a Necromunda player and got back in to it. I got myself a bunch of guard off Ebay no joke the painting on them hurts the eye (love 'em) plus the last chancers. Also I got a bunch of Orks off Ebay (it burns to look at them) coz Orks in the Underhive makes me happy. Now I have kill team the tau and some more Ebay Kroots (again the eye pain painting) coz WTF gw unbalanced boxed game. To top it all off I wanted Genestealer cult, I figured I had the tac squad so I got the deathwatch overkill and lost patrol boxes. Now I can field 4 kill teams and 4 Inquisimunda gangs. Also I have like 700 points deathwatch army with 300 points IG allies. Thinking about getting some tanks now. Going to go IG but limit them to only what is in Genestealer cult codex. Thus I can use my guard in the Genestealer cult army duel use on the tanks giving me a good value on 3 armies. Deathwatch + IG or Genestealers + IG or just IG. Minimum spending and maximum gaming 4 games multiple lists and lost patrol.
I started nearly 5 years ago. I started with Tau (ew), but then I wised up and bought Orks. That was dandy for a while, but then Feel No Pain called to me... I started playing Nurgle, and sold off my old Tau to get them. At this point, Orks have become a side note as Death Guard take the lead of my collection, with Primaris Space Marines as a small collection to loan to friends that want to try out the game. I’ve been showing this video to them too, when they decide they want to participate in the hobby.
I remember watching this as a middle schooler thinking to myself "if only my allowance could afford it... I wish this game doesn't die out so I can play it when I get a decent job one day". Parents weren't poor, but clearly couldn't afford me dumping $$$ every year lmao. Now here I am, with a "decent" job (currently looking for a better one so I can properly afford a better lifestyle as well as 40k) and coming back to reminisce on some of these old videos... I'm so happy the game didn't die out :) Been playing for nearly 3 years now, and gearing up for apocalypse yet again!
Neat video, I just started last year collecting my army and building. Unfortunately I skipped the rule book but I did get my codex... which only came in digital... sadly. Thank you for the list and I shall keep it in mind for steps 7 and up. Still have yet to play a game sadly. My army that I am going with is, Adepta Sororitas, aka Sisters of Battle. I think I made things more difficult for myself but hey I'm up to about ~320 points to field, still working on my HQ.
Thank you so much! I am actually trying to start playing as Imperial Guard, and I didn't really know where to start. As of now I only have regular cadian infantry, but that will be subject to change. I hope that this time next year I will be able to field my army and actually play 40k, and you guys are honestly a massive help!

This guy really makes me want to play. I met a guy who mentioned this game to me and offered to show me how to play, and since I thought it looked fun I decided to learn. I had a great time and about a week later I was reading the rule book/codexes and loved, freaking loved the lore. Unfortunately I don't think Ill be hearing back from the dude that introduced it to me... but I'm glad he showed me 40k. Cant wait to build and paint my first Tyranid army :)
yeah, its already here, got all the troops glued together but the arms a freaking hard to place correctly. Cant wait until i have time to start the painting!
just saying dark eldar are one of the hardiest armies to play because if your wyches are not in combat or your kabalite warriors are not in cover using there splinter weapons you are screwed
This is a great get-started guide. I have been sporadically trying to collect armies in large clumps, and that usually meant I haven't even gotten the codex because I'm too exited about the army itself. This guide will really help me start my new Ork army. Thanks for posting this!
I remember walking into my local Games Workshop (everyone else was pretty much playing yugioh and duelmasters) to do just that, observe. And the staff there give outright a vibe of "buy or gtfo". Well thank you, and just dive into a $60-$100+ investment on an army in a game that has some 10 armies to play (did I get them all)? But no thank you. Went back to my MTG. Probably why there isn't a local Games Workshop anymore. Maybe I just need to find what there is out there now (whatever there could be in NYC) and check that out, just watching this makes me want to get some kind of WH40k fix.
The local GW's I've been to recently have more of a "Hey, buddy! I'm Todd. The wife next door looking at jewelry? Well, this is a MINIATURES BATTLEGAME. Have you heard of that before? Boy, they sure are neat-o!" I'm 28. Seriously? I actually had the manager in one store say outright: "It all looks pretty weird, huh?" Then, he proceeded to give me the full rundown on the hobby for like 10 minutes before I finally asked where the White Dwarfs were. It's like they have 2 settings: push products on little kids who know nothing, and play up the whole "This looks really weird and kiddie, but man is it fun" for older dudes. And $60-100 investment? Try more like $150-200, at least. They always push the starter box games ($100+) and try to tag on the various hobby/painting sets ($25-50+) to boot. If you're wanting a fix, I suggest eBay. I was able to pick up the Hobbit game for like $50 on a lucky bid.

I was playing with the thought of getting into WH40k since I saw the first artwork about 15 years ago (I'm actually a classic battletech guy) and just recently a friend of mine offered me a nice little chaos army (bout 1000pts) for a good price and I seized it as kind of a starter kit. Walking into the next GW-Store I thought it would be like it used to be: people playing the game in a room in the back and all others discussing news, tactics and epic battles, what I always wanted to be part of.... nothing! commerce! I'll try to get as much used stuff as possible, cause the game's still great...
Wolf Michael Gerhäusser That's a real shame, I remember before the one in my area closed down (before they tried to shove everything on to you) they would always have games being played out on a large table and the employees always wanted to talk rather than make you buy whatever was new.
Unfortunately whenever you deal with the corporate stores like GW that is all that you are going to find. They have a sales goal they need to make for the week and if they are down numbers wise they are going to be pushy as all hell, which is understandable as they are a business but its a crap way to get initiated into the hobby! LUCKILY you can always shop local, I know that sounds cliched and kinda douchey but I found local is always best. Here in the Baltimore area there are 3 really really good locally owned gaming stores that sell GW stuff, as well as other games like Infinty, Malifaux, Warmachine ETC, as well as table-top games. Local shops tend to be less pushy sales wise and more willing to work with you to teach you how to play mainly because they know, a customer may only spend $20 this time around, but if they feel comfortable and happy, that's a lifetime supporter that will help pay the local shops bills in the long run with repeat business. Understandably not every area has this luxury so the best bet is if you don't have a local shop or cant find one within reasonable distance, buy the armies you want online (Ebay, Amazon, Craigslist etc,) order it in, paint it up, study the rules and play. If you have friends that are interested in playing you guys can learn together and then join a gaming league (Facebook and twitter are really good resources for finding leagues) If one doesn't exist like in the more rural areas you can always start your own league and find other like minded people in your area by that may be looking for the same thing by making a Facebook page really quickly and start recruiting. At very least this will give you a chance to have a Lot of fun in a really accepting community, hell who knows you may tap into an unexpected gold mine and one day open your own lucrative gaming store (a guy can dream right?). Anyway, sorry for the absurd length of this reply, but thats just my 2 pennies.
Hey yea, if you want to store miniatures, get a metal toolbox, large as possible, and glue small circular magnets to the bottom bases of your miniatures. Then they'll stand up nicely inside the toolbox. You can also put some on the walls of the toolbox.

I remember when the miniatures on that list would have set you back £88, now it's £146.50. I can't remember how much cases, brushes, etc used to be, but I'm pretty certain paints have nearly doubled in price. Worst is Imperial Guard though; when I stared my Guard army a box of 20 guardsmen was £15, now it's boxes of 10 for £18, and you need at least 40 and multiple command squads to have a "legal army".
E. A. Deasar I remember seeing an older Vindicator for 24.50 USD, Now you would need to look on ebay or Amazon to find a tank priced like that. I actually asked a GW manager what made the Relusiarch Command Squad worth 90.00 USD he told me "Well because the character alone would cost you 30.00 dollars." It's GW's pricing is all and unless people start to decide that those aren't prices they are willing to pay and are willing to go with their wallets and hold on to their money, I don't see it changing....on the plus side I found an unopened container of plastic glue from 4 years ago with an 8.00 price tag, if I'd found that sooner I wouldn't of paid for the other bottle I just recently bought but it was 6.00 On the down side a freaking hand drill costs 26.00 USD...

I used a Claptrap figure as a Dreadnought for my Dark Angels... Needless to say it put in work. I'm starting up a Tyranid army right now as I type this.

I don't know a lot of people (as in, none) who play the game, but I like building models and would like to just buy something like a squad with a Dreadnought to assemble and paint. Maybe the Iron Hands because I like the special arms and legs you can give them. Would that be a good start?..

Simple green is your best friend m8. Take a cup of the stuff, fill it half way, then the other half with water. Wait about 5 or so hours, take a toothbrush and the paint all comes off.
depends how you messed it up, if you messed up using to much paint then repainting would make it thicker and less detailed but if you just used the wrong colours you should be able to repaint easily you could also re-spray models but it might not stick as well
I recently tried to paint my first model (a drone). It predictably looked like shit, despite me spending about four hours painting the damn thing. I ended up wiping and scraping the paint off more times than I'd like to admit. I think that in the time it took me to paint it, a Fio'Saal could have built me a _real_ drone out of spare parts.
Chaotic Khajiit well at least you only messed up painting a drone, I mean they don't cost that much to replace but if you fucked up painting something like a storm surge then you would probably feel like killing yourself xD
I bought the Assault On Black Reach set and it was pretty good value for money. I did also go and buy a carry case and all the paints stated in the set. It was expensive to start out but once you have a carry case and some paints its much easier to build a large collection.
10 year update: Step 1: Observe: Go to any hobby store that is not a GW store, their arrogance and poor salesmanship will immediately put you off. Ask simple questions, everyone will either A make the answer up and get it wrong, or B try and look the answer up but not find where it is and then get it wrong swearing they remember reading it. Step 2: Get your Books: You will only need a Rulebook, and a Codex, and a supplement, any non-English degree (the rules are so poorly written you cannot understand their English with your English, and then find the erratas to confirm painfully obvious rules corrections, the faq that asks questions no one has asked, and the 2nd version of your codex since in the week that you have owned the 1st version it is now out of date and incorrect, the errata to the rulebook since the first errata was to correct the 1000 mistakes made in the codex and not the rulebook, the most up to date point update lost somewhere on the community site. Pretty pictures. Step 3: Start Army: A small army will only set you back your entire life savings. BUT always remember that the one new must have model, that EVERYONE needs for their army only costs your soul, and cannot be fielded unless you collect them, but you need it because Games Workshop have told you that you need it, so you must have it. It's a limited edition must have model, only a 1 000 000 will be made, i mean 1 000 -000- will be made, and each costs £100, made from highly detailed miscast broken resin, designed to look like something generic but because we are GW we own the Intellectual Property rights to everything, therefore if you try to use it will infringe our IP rights as it is not a standard GW product. Step 4: Get materials: You must have a fully painted army. Get 3 good quality brushes, and 500 GW only paint pots, since any non GW paints are made from acid and will ruin your models, regardless of whether they are better quality for half the price. Satan has shat in their paint, don't use it. Ignore the fact that some tournament winners are shite at painting :| and only care about being as big a t*at as possible to everyone. Or because you are new to 40k. Just buy a spray can and practice spraying your models, your practicing, they don't need to be tournament ready. GW glue, knives, drills, clippers, tape measures, dice, and templates are the only things you are permitted to use. Whatever you do don't get better quality ones from anywhere else, our tape measures, knives, drills, and clippers are all made from the highest quality looking cheap plastic and metal, designed to break immediately meaning to save yourself some time, purchase a handful of all of them, so you don't have to return to us between games. Step 5: Start Painting: Your learning, just spray your models. Worry about painting them after having learned the rules more. Step 6: Prime Models: ... Do not field grey miniatures... unless they are Carcakoradonses... Carcarokodns... caracrdrons... (quick google search)... Carcharodons: Superhuman space sharks :D their main colour is plastic grey XD Step 7: Get HQ: Getting an HQ now is the perfect time, since you new models will need a commander to -lead- send them into battle. You HQ is hugely durable ish, but requires a meat shield to survive since all they actually do is babysit certain units from behind them. MAke sure you choose the correct HQ for the models you already have, since each HQ is highly restricted in what they can actually do and what benefits the give out. Step 8: Get Elite: These usually over pointsed units are a must have. Step 9: Get Heavy Support: These units specialise in heavy firepower, pick any unit to field. It doesn't matter which, because your army is just a mix of different units, your still learning ^^ Step 10: March On!: After some practice you will learn how the game actually works. You have many options here, put most of your army to the side and buy more models to try and flesh out your existing army to try and make them work. Or scrap this army and start again with a new army. Or try to sell your army second hand, but then GW will attack you with infringing their IP rights with GW non primarily sold models. There IS something to be said about a 100 greentide orks.... they are completely ineffective... 40k is now a micromanagement administration game and not a tabletop miniatures game. I think that covers everything for a 2021 update :)
The painting nonsense drives me away from wanting to play Warhammer. I just want to play the game, I don't want to waste my time painting tons of miniatures.
Dust Tactics is a fun game with pre-assembled and pre-primed figures you should look into that Dust Tactics has a Premium line that are pre-assembled , pre-primed and “pre-painted”
An that case you'd want to buy a pre-made army someone's selling. Try Craigslist, or if you're lucky your local gaming store will sell second-hand armies. But the painting is part of the "hobby" of wargaming. If you just want the game without the hobby, then buying second-hand is what you want to do.

Very first marines I bought decades ago was the paint set that came with five marines which I think were discontinued a good month before I bought them (they were like full body cast with a plastic bar connecting the feet that went into a slot on the base); ended up painting them as ultramarine veterans and also bought the starter which came with marines and Dark Eldar, which my brother took to start his army
Thanks! I recently got my first models. A 3 pack Ultramarine starter kid and the Dark Vengeance set. I've never built or painted models before so I think I'll start with Ultramarines. With them they can't get worse.

Hey Adam! My name is Rutger Hoving and im 14 years of age. I played Warhammer Lord of the Rings, but all of my friends quited because the prices became to high for kids to afford... I liked it so much, especially the painting, that I continued, without any friends. I went to the store and talked to some people who are not like, the normal people i would step to if i was looking for new friends. I thought they where all idiots but my best frineds now, are those i met at the shop. No more letters

Other rules: Work in a well ventilated space. This is more important than you think. Don't buy any GW tools, paints or glues. You can get the same/better elsewhere for less. Airfix glues have a great applicator needle that comes in handy when trying to do fiddly bits. Get a box of paperclips and a pin vice. Learn to pin your models early on. Practice painting on metal models, as you can dip them in paintstripper and start again or try something new without destroying them.
This guide is great. I have some friends who I think might be interested in playing 40k and i will definitely point them toward this video. It is a great way to show the progression of how to get into the game and how to expand on an army. Two thumbs way up on this one. :D
I really don't mind the cost of the models, they are super detailed and the meat of the experience. What grinds my gears to no end is the price of the codexes and the rules. If they reduced the codex price that means more people could afford to field more than one army thus more minis sold. I currently bought the Space Marine, Necron and Iron Hand supplemet codex.......£70 for three books -_-
I'm just watching this now, literally starting the hobby during 8th edition. Glad I watched it and that most of my plan is what was suggested, but in more detail. Thanks for the video.
If you really screw up you can strip the paint off using this cleaner called Purple Power. You can buy it at auto parts stores such as Autozone. Soak the painted miniature in it overnight in a 50/50 mixture of water and Purple Power for 24 hours. Then scrub the paint off with a tooth brush and you're good to go.
I should have followed this when I used to play in my teens. I got pretty good at painting but never settled on an army, so I just had bits and bobs from every race because I enjoyed to paint them, but when it came to playing I could only ever field one or two squads/characters as part of a bigger game.
waay back when I first started warhammer 40k, my mate told me "just get some cool looking stuff and slap it onto my army (dark angels) when I go to play" so I got a lot of the badarse looking deathwings with the capes and hoods, painted them like I had parkinsons and that was my 40k experience for about a year.
I just bought a Necron set. i know someone else who knows everything about it. as i spent 6 hours making just one figurine, i sent a joke that fits the Necrons. He laughed, that was enough to tell me i was getting better at lore.
Love you guys, you bring so much joy and fun to the Warhammer world, I'm more of a fantasy player but I think video is essential for anyone starting an Army. I'm gonna put my Space Wolves on the gaming table tomorrow, thanks guys............
Thank you for this video. I play the video games and read the books and have been trying to break into the tabletop. This definitely helped me get a good idea of how I should begin. I just don't know what race I should start with. I really like the Eldar but also love the space marines and the space marines bring the problem of which legion! I'll figure it out eventually... lol.
Ive only ever played Dawn of War but Ive always wanted to start playing 40k. Ive found myself drooling over painted models in the GW window. Really should give it a try one day.
Picked up the rulebook, a GW tape-measure, and some GW dice at my local War gaming store. Getting the Spess Marheens codex tomorrow, I can't wait to play my first game!
Really would like to get into Warhammer, I absolutely love the lore and the games. Unfortunately I live in a small town where no one has even heard of warhammer (besides WoW of course). That being said, if I were to build an army it would probably be either Space Wolves or Cadian Reg.
As an update, the newest box set is now called Dark Vengeance and contains a force of Dark Angels Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines, plus the rule books. You can still get Assault on Black Reach in some locations and it is still a good start for Orks or just about any Space Marines.
2024 edition: Step 1: buy a 3d printer Step 2: play Onepagerules instead You get to enjoy all the awesome parts of this hobby: custom armies, kit bashing, any models you like, easy to learn and easy to teach rules (even for your friends who don't play wargaming games at all) Without selling any organs to be able to afford it.
after everything Dave said i would add one more. Don't get disheartend if u should lose ur first few games, ur only just learning and building an army, once u get to that point were u know the game well enough to realise wot it is ur doing wrong, that first win will be all the sweeter

I am new to Table Top Gaming. But I LOVE this kind of games, I played all the Warhammer 40.000 PC games, and amazing as they are. This is the REAL thing. One small problem, it's so expensive to buy, but I would love to join. This looks so GREAT, and will make a amazing hobby. Thanks for the advices given in this video.
an even better bit of advice is to start one piece at a time (I know I necro'd your comment) so get the rule-book, army book, tools if you don't have them, and a single unit then decide on your paint scheme. Keep it to about 2-3 colors and put them colors on. Or since you have the PC games use those as your guide for how you want your army to look, if they are present of course. After that get your next unit, this is also a good idea when it comes to Forgeworld models as often you'll buy infantry that will just be the body but no equipment. Either way have fun, and happy gaming to you!

I want to write a script on this concept, of future war. The table top, version is the best way to start, and get the true essence of Warhammer.

This was very helpful, i have gone in and out of the hobby due to having no money, and models being lost or broken. once i get a suitable workspace I will start anew using this list, thanks!
You could go to a nearby Games workshop or independent retailer store. You can find them on the games workshop store under store finder. They're actually everywhere, you'd be suprised
I know how you feel, when I was starting I wasn't sure what to do. The best thing I found is to go into you local GW or whatever. Find someone your age and tell them your new to the hobby and are looking for someone to play with. Simple as that!. I have found the wargaming community to be very friendly.
How to learn about the lore basically watch "if the Emperor had a text to speech device" that will get you a good idea of the world but make sure to cross check what is actually Canon
