We split our last trip between the two areas: first Kaanapali where we did a lot more activities (whale watch, snorkeling, west maui loop, etc) and then spent the back half of our vacation in Wailea, where the focus is much more geared toward putting your feet up on a deck chair with a drink and a book as you watch the whale spouts and wait for the sunset. We love Ka'anapali but prefer Wailea since it's so close to Kihei and generally just more centrally located.

Spent my childhood vacationing in the Ka'anapali area, so I'm partial to it. Like the nightlife that Lahaina provides and all the water activites during the day.

You can't go wrong! We visit Maui once a year and usually a different month/time of year. Prefer Kihei area, central for us to go in any direction and we venture out almost daily. Sunsets are just gorgeous there. Love beaches and snorkeling on both sides. Busier on Lahaina side and quieter in the Kihei area. We have also stayed in Hana which is your super chill town and we loved exploring that side for a few days. Not just doing the drive but really checking out all it has to offer that you don't see from the road. Red and Black Sand Beach and of course the Bamboo forrest all the way to the waterfall. Paia is my favorite little gem of a town. Love your videos!

My wife and I have stayed in Kaanapali at the Hyatt and we loved everything about it, the location activities going to Lahaina town. I agree with you that cost would come in to play and staying in Kaanapali affords us to 3 or 4 more days in Maui. We would go to Wailea for the day and enjoy the sites Kaanapali is where I would stay again. Great video guys, loved it. Mahalo Steve and Lori .

Mahalo, another great video! We looked at both areas when we were there. Whalers Village was a huge disappointment due to the horrendous parking charges just to look around. The mall at Wailea was a lot more friendly until they started to charge for parking to shop, it’s far more expensive than mainland parking, that’s another reason when shopping to go into Kahului and shop there. Personally we like staying in Kihei using a condo just across from the beach with plenty of reasonably priced restaurants and easy access to the grocery stores, but to each, their own. Aloha you three, stay safe!

Thanks Paul! It sounds like we need to make a video on Kihei and Maalaea as those are fan favorites. Kihei is super convenient. Our friends stayed there for 10-days and didn't need a rental car. As you say, everything is right there if one has already seen the sights around the island.

Love watching you guys. Very practical informations. My family just got back from Maui last week. Second time here , initial plans was at Kauai but due to stricter rules and vacation time from work getting closer , we decided to go back to Maui. Stayed this time at Westin villas at Kaanapali . Plenty of stores open to buy poke , shaved ice, loco moco and all this different Hawaiian dishes. Even got to do whale watching and then the next morning, just a walk from our hotel to the beach,was a whale, spouting water. Very exciting . And most importantly , the kids were able to play golf at Kapalua golf course . Their reason in joining us on this trip😉. Best time to go visit Maui is now, not as crowded yet & less traffic. Weather was perfect and everybody had a good time . We are already planning for our next Hawaiian trip and of course, I will be getting information from you, Jordan & Erika! Please continue sharing your experiences with us, I really enjoy your videos. Good luck and MAHALO🌻🌻🌻

We actually like to split our time between Wailea and Kaanapali. We usually go for the resort experience for half the trip and typically go to Wailea. Like you said you get a more luxury experience in Wailea, and we think you get the best family experience and the Fairmont. It is absolutely amazing for Families with essentially an all suite set up. We have found we like the vacation rentals in Kaanapali a lot more than in Wailea since you are more likely to find a good vacation rental on the ocean in Kaanapali, and there are more driving adventures in West Maui vs South Maui, so we feel less inclined to be at a resort when we're in West Maui.

We were scheduled to go to Tulum Yucatan at the End of january (yes, 5 days from now) and the sudden change in covid testing requirements and quarantine for international travel made us rethink and pivot to a possible vacation on maui. We shifted plans and found an affordable condo and flights and car...but I have NEVER even thought about going to maui....so, i had NO idea what to do, expect or consider...BUT, I found YOUR amazing videos and they have so helped me make informed decisions, be prepared for travel requirements (preflight covid testing) , where to shop for food, what beaches, snorkeling and just generally what to look for and enjoy in the Lahaina area. Thank you again and again...

When we went to Maui we stayed in the Grand Wailea which is a nice and private resort that offered a beach with great snorkeling and reefs to visit, also an activity pool with bars and slides for people to enjoy. This is the more kid friendly hotel in Wailea and offers rooms and condos. Staying in the condos offered us a beautiful sunset along the resort.

Aloha! I am so excited to be planning my honeymoon on Maui in May 2022! We have already decided to break our honeymoon into two parts: 3 days on the East side of Maui where we'll stay at the Hamoa Bay Bungalow and zipline and hike and experience more adventurous things and then the final 4 days on the West side of Maui at the Royal Lahaina Resort where we plan to snorkel, kayak, beach comb, maybe have a spa day and take a sunset dinner cruise! I have enjoyed watching your videos. Perhaps you could create an itinerary for couples that want to break up their travels like I am planning! Just a thought. Mahalo!

So happy to have found your channel- love your energy! We visited just about 6 weeks ago for 14 days, and split our time between the areas. If money weren't an object, I'd probably stay in Wailea for future visits. We stayed at the Fairmont, and while the service was great, I'm not sure I'd justify the cost again. That said, we are coming back in August, staying (again) at the Hyatt Residence Club in Kaanapali. We stayed last time, and you can't beat the 2 bed accommodations with a huge lanai. We also have a 3 year old, so the Kaanapali area affords a bit more for him to enjoy. We ate at the Seahouse restaurant the last night of our recent visit, and I think a stay right on Napili Beach might be up next years trip- felt much more relaxed and I loved how the little resorts were set up right on the beach. Thanks for the videos- I'll keep watching as we get closer to the next trip. Mahalo! PS- how I wish the average room rates you mentioned in the video were even remotely the same, $$$ these days!
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide
@TheHawaiiVacationGuide 2 года назад
I know! Room rates are up 43% this year compared to 2019. Napili and Ka'anapali does have a better vibe for the kids. We love Wailea but yes, the cost is hard to justify but good for a honeymoon or anniversary trip. Thanks for sharing and for watching!!

We've stayed in Kaanapali 3 times and in Wailea once. Wailea is so much more upscale, we would never stay anywhere else. Loved it. I should say though that we are taking our grandkids in December and will stay in Kaanapali. When it is just the two of us we will always choose Wailea over Kaanapali. Doesn't seem to have as many kids. I also think Wailea is more expensive. As I recall we paid about $650 a night for our room versus $450 at the Hyatt Kaanapali.
@u235u235u235
@u235u235u235 2 года назад
the video didn't stress that enough. Wailea is for solid upper-middle class folks -- when I say upper-middle class I'm talking about 4-year+ degree professional couples earning 450k+/year combined at least. Although, Kihei directly north of Wailea is pretty affordable and has some crummy people but that to me adds character when you want to go around. Between airfare, resort hotels and shopping/eating/activities a family of four can spend 30-40k easily staying for two weeks in Wailea and imo it's worth every penny. Or you could get a cheap air bnb in Kihei just north of Wailea, eat at food trucks/cheap restaurants and do mostly beach stuff on the cheap and have a great time, and every option in between.
@stecks12
@stecks12 3 года назад
We went twice in 2019. We stayed in Wailea first and Kaanapali second. It's basically Wailea/Kihei vs Kaanapali/Lahaina/Napili Bay, because those areas are so close together. My wife and I both agree...Kaanapali - hands down and that's where we will return to after the pandemic.

Been to Maui at least 20 times and have done both and I definitely see the benefit of both, but for us there is no place better than Wailea. It's quieter and slower paced and since we are not new to Hawaii tourists, that's the place that we get the best Hawaiian experience. Also we've stayed at the Grand Wailea, the condo above the Grand Wailea, The Four Seasons, the Fairmont, and the Wailea Villas as a family of 5. The villas were a surprise favorite but pricey. But my recommendation is the Fairmont. My kids are older so we don't need to deal with the chaos of getting chairs at the Grand Wailea anymore, but the Fairmont is equally luxurious, but much quieter.

@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Something I did a couple of years ago was stay for 4 days at a cabin with a group of friends at Waianapanapa State Park. This gave us the opportunity to explore the Hana area over several days, black sand beach, red sand beach, hiking through the bamboo forest, many waterfalls, seven sacred pools, lava tubes, etc. And of course the accommodations were cheap! I think at the time, the cabin was $80/nt. but our friend who lives on Kauai and joined us for the trip was able to book it at a "local" discount rate. It is an experience I will never forget! I just need to figure out a way to move there! It would be interesting to hear about how you guys did it!

@@patteegee9506 We paid $60 a night! They are usually impossible to get but since Maui is shutdown we were able to book one and are planning on going back. The Road to Hana was not the same with no one on the road and no one at the sights. It made for an interesting experience but it will be more fun when the island is open and it feels safer for the local residents. There is so much to see on that part of the island that more than 1-day is required. I'm jealous you got to do 4-days. We are planning on going back for more days, 2 wasn't enough. When my family and I stay in Maui we stay in our villa which is the Westin kaanapali villas which we’ve been staying there since I was in kindergarten until two years ago when we stayed in waileia for a few days. I like how in kaanapali tpit seems to be more childhood friendly with wailers village and where the Westin villas are located but in Waileia I like how the waves are very big and how you can’t go very far out into the ocean and it still will be shallow. Although I do prefer kaanapali over waileia.

Kaanapali wins hand down - restaurants at Lahaina & shopping at the Outlet are far much better. It also holds fond memories We stayed near there for our honeymoon some 27 years ago

I visit a timeshare every year in Kihei. Easy access to both areas. I think Kaanapali is more friendly and accessible. The beach walks in both areas are beautiful, but Wailea has fences and signs 'hotel guests only', while Kaanapali seems open and welcoming. Just don't try to park. Ulua is my fave beach. I truely enjoy my visits to your beautiful island and look forward to seeing you in 2021 hopefully!

I have been to Maui many, many times. I used to live on Oahu for 13 years so have been to all the outer islands numerous times. I must say that Maui is my favorite island! We always stay on Kaanapali Beach ... we used to stay at the Westin until we had a child and now we stay at the Hyatt. The Hyatt has great swimming pools and a great water slide for kids. I found the south side of the island a little too quite for me. I want to have a little activity at night. I can't wait to go back in a few weeks!

What do you think of the north kaanapali area? We’re planning to go to Maui this summer for the first time and I was looking at the Honua Kai. It looks great and more affordable than staying right in the center of kaanapali.

We're thinking about doing four nights in/near Wailea-Kihei (to give us time to go to Molokini and perhaps a Lana'i day trip whose ferry leaves from around there). We also will try to do Hakeakala during that time though I know it's a long, circuitous drive from there. Then take the Road to Hana and spend a night around there before heading back across for two last nights in Ka'anapali would that be a reasonable itinerary?

Great video! We absolutely love Ka'anapali/Lahaina/Kapalua area! There is so much to do and Black Rock is a favorite snorkeling spot of ours. Whaler's Village is a fun shopping center and there is always so much to do in West Maui. With that said, we haven't ever stayed in Wailea, but just booked our next trip down there because it's gonna be in winter and we were thinking weather and water conditions should be better down south. We do love how intimate the Wailea area is, but it will be interesting to see how much we enjoy our time away from it all instead of being in the heart of it all on Maui. I'm sure we will still be spending plenty of time all over the island! Maybe we'll see you guys during our time there haha

Aloha Dusty! Wailea is a good pick to try something new and there are some good deals on hotels in Wailea in 2021. You deserve a luxury vacation after 2020. We should meet up!

@@TheHawaiiVacationGuide Yes that was our thought. We booked the Grand Wailea because why not right? Haha I think we all deserve a year long vacation after this year haha...although I feel like people will be extremely happy to get off of "vacation" and get back to work lol. That would be fun! We've kicked around the idea of moving to Hawaii or at least getting a condo there. We've managed to narrow it down to Maui or the big island if we do end up buying out there. It would be great to get some perspective from someone who's spent time on the mainland. Are you guys on Facebook or Instagram? It would probably be easier to organize something for lunch or dinner through there

Ka'anapali is wonderful but feels a bit too kitschy. Went to Whaler's Village and even the shopping center which felt like an outlet mall. The saving grace was an ABC store. Looks like Wailea is more like a good escape if you want the resort getaway but the price tag comes with it. However the aquarium and Kihei are much closer so you don't have to get sucked in and herded around like the Ka'anapali tour busses. haha.

Hi guys! Love your smiles and you present very well! Just a thought. You live there and should be experts on island and city pronunciations. It’s also the most expensive place to live. But worth the price of living in paradise. I’ve lived on Maui for 21 years and don’t ever want to move back to the Mainland (visitors, please don’t call the Mainland “the states”, Hawaii is a state too 🌴). Also, I’ve often wondered why Alaska says “the lower 48”, shouldn’t it be the “lower 49”😉? BTW, my preference, as a local, is Wailea as opposed to Ka’anapali. Less touristy. Stay safe and happy travels! Aloha!
