I purchased my alligator snappers from this gentleman almost a decade ago! He answers the phone and will talk with you and help with any questions or issues you have! He truly cares about these animals and I appreciate that!
Johns and his son are good dudes! I’m glad I returned my giant turtle to them. I miss the dude but he got too big for my living situation. I’ve held that exact turtle in the video
i caught one as a kid on a school trip to an overnight camp. the pond looked real similar to yours with the plants hanging over about half the edges. we were all out in row boats and ended up beached in the tall grass and spotted something. it was a hatchling turtle and it was bristling with spikes. i knew the most about turtles and reptiles in general and recognized it as an alligator snapper. it mightve been two inches across at most but it had fire in its belly; it wanted to bite and scratch and i about fell in love on the spot. we rowed back to the counselors and showed them what we had found and they paled. i told them it meant there was a nesting female nearby and that the pond was her home. i asked to keep the turtle and they said no real loud and demanded it. i refused until they swore not to kill it and i made sure they released it back into the pond. stood there and watched in defiance of my teacher. when i was younger than that my dad taught at jefferson college hillsboro and when they still had a herpetology department i would always make him take me to see the reptiles they kept there. everybody in the science 2 building loved that i was so interested so they would let me into the central area behind the displays to see some of the care and handling procedures and it always so enraptured me. the researchers there always gave the snakes silly names like monty python. silly puns that killed me as a kid. but ive never forgotten the love of reptiles, and particularly turtles, that place helped foster in me. at the same time we lived in the city and our neighbor was head of the primate house at the zoo, so he was also head researcher of primatology and ran their captive breeding program. what i really cared about was that he would come home right after steve irwins show dressed like steve irwin. that was their uniform in the 90s, it was great. we would talk about whatever research he was doing then i would ask about... you guessed it, turtles and reptiles. id wait for him on the back porch every single day and he always made time for me. not only that he made sure when the zoo had some activity involving reptiles that i got to go and play with them. because of that man i got to race turtles from africa and pet giant turtles from the galapagos. im pretty sure he runs the cinncinatti zoo now. but he was patient and kind. everyone around animals was and is to my experience and recollection and you guys seem to be too. thank you.
It's great that John is doing so much to preserve the species. His work raised my awareness of their plight . I let everyone know about their status also. I have one of his babies. He's an awesome little turtle.
Its funny you mention the word " plight." I authored an article in the 1990s titled "the plight of the alligatir snapping turtle." It was printed in the monthly california turtle and tortise club or society. Dont know if i habe a copy anywhere but i put a lot of info on what happened to this species across the states they occupy.
Living in Texas we have these guys all over the place even where I work there are a handful of them and they are impressive animals. They are social distance champions for sure!! Loved this video so educational!
We are interested in a single or possibly a pair from loggerhead acres. I’ve loved and owned common snapping turtles for nearly 40yrs now. Never had a Alligator snapper though due to being in the upper Midwest. Jons number is disconnected. It shows turtles available for sale on his site but I’m waiting to hear back from him.
Thank you . The crazy thing is I placed a order 3 weeks ago . and to find this video of the place . Awesome. thanks again and keep the good work flowing...
John the turtle man from loggerhead Acres. He's done an amazing job bringing awareness to the importance of the conservation of the alligator snapping turtle.🐢
What a great show, I would love to have one of those for a pet,I live in Florida now but I lived in Oklahoma for 7 yrs, this turtle was a common thing to encounter on my many cat fishing trips, such a majestic critter,I subscribed to your channel because of the quality of this show
Great video again, thank you. Huge amount of eggs in that one nest, over 60, if i heard it right. In the wild many of them probably don't survive. They really are so amazing animals. 🐢
I’m so glad I found this channel! I have always been fascinated by this particular species of turtle, but have never had one. Just ordered two hatchlings, so i excited! Beautiful animals!
He brings up a good point about tap water. It is important to do water changes frequently if you keep aquariums even if you have a good filter and use water conditioner
It’s great to see this video! I got 3 baby loggerheads from them and are growing them now! I have a common snapping turtle I’ve had since she was a baby for 5 years now I got online too excited to have both in tanks next to eachother!
i came across one on a trail here in michigan of all places a few years back. it was huge. went back where i came from for a minute and he was gone 5mins later. weird but cool encounter.
So what are people with normal means supposed to do who can’t collect rain water? Are the tap water treatment products you can buy from the big named stores okay?
I love all your videos so much!! They're awesome 🐢💚 While I know this has nothing to do with this exact video I need some help because I am dealing with an issue in my RES aquarium and wanted to see if you had any advise. I recently discovered I have freshwater copepods in my planted and my RES tank. I have been told it's nothing to be worried about yet all the turtle groups I follow on FB say I should still do an entire filter and tank cleaning on my RES tank even though it would cause a bacteria bloom they said it should handle getting rid of the copepods yet everything else I've read including the pet stores told me not to worry and that you can't get rid of all of them short of throwing everything out and starting all over. I am so stressed and confused and need help! Should I do a full cleaning or just not worry about it. It's 1 4.5 inch male in a 75 gallon. No fish or anything live besides Buddy (RES) in that tank and its bare bottom. I already do monthly maintenance on my Fluval 407 and weekly 25% water changes. Please any advise would help ease my troubled and worried turtle mom mind! Thank you in advance.
Alligator snapping turtles are somewhat protected throughout their range. In many states, they are not legal to buy, sell or own without a permit. However, it is sometimes legal to hatch them from your own stock. And many states simply ban the sale of locally obtained non-game wildlife.
This gentleman has a certain popularity in China's crocodile turtle circle. The dream of those crocodile turtle lovers is to raise crocodiles that have always been the origin. But this is difficult to achieve.
Your doing a great job but I didn't understand the paper bag part. I agree with you on the exposure of the Suns radiation and and that's why I use a black 5 gallon bucket with sanatized potting mix for transport of all turtle Eggs. I harvested 35 common snapping turtles this year and all hatched last week.
Why does he just toss em around when digging them up? It doesn’t damage it before 24 hours or what? (I don’t know much about turtle eggs, just curious)
r turtle eggs different from other reptile eggs, cus it was my understand that rotating any reptile egg, will kill the embryo in the egg and wheres a bin to put the eggs in and also, to me, the dude digging the eggs were kinda ruff with them, dont get me wrong, I love what you do for turtles and conservation Greg, but plz tell why the eggs where aloud to roll around never mind what I said @5:56 answered my question
Can U please make a proper guide on growth rate of Common and Alligator snapping turtle based on their age based on uhr experience, bcoz that is one deciding factor whether I will have which one of them
