Little known fact, it's not one guy. He's been cloned by the Finnish military innumerable times, and there is a clone posted at literally every turn on any Finnish rallye stage. Also, Finnish law states crashing in a way that fails to elicit at least one loud "Oioioi" reaction is a criminal offense punishable by up to 5 years in jail.

i thought it was a rumor, laughed it off when people mentioned it. it was not until i myself joined a Finnish rally. on that day after i crashed into a didge spinning through the air, before even impacting back on solid ground with a flash he appeared. i was in awe, as i looked in my rear view mirror while hanging upside down in the air, there he was running for my car towing cable raised above his head. i do not recall much of what happened that day, but the hat guy i'll never forget. some say he's the harbinger of crashes but i believe he's there for us all to be pulled out of a crash. and so goes the legend of the hat guy.

The text in his shirt "liina perseeseen" translates "rope to ass" 😂 He has branded himself well, if you google u can find online paper articles about him

I really like that he clears the stages for the next cars. In Canada, the spectators aren't legally allowed (under threat of criminal trespassing charges) to help crashed cars. So, the cars get stuck. Then, the stage gets blocked and the stage gets cancelled. Spectators lose rally passes. It already kinda sucks to be a Canadian rally spectator but yeah. On the other hand, Canadian rally is dirt cheap. And, Rally of the Tall Pines is ridiculously challenging but you don't tend to have big crashes. It's like... Winter roads that are snowy and icy to keep speeds down, but summer ditches (so I guess you come to a pretty abrupt stop which prevents rolling, and limits damage)

I love how rally is the only sport where audience participation is normal as if it's just part of the environment. It's like if there was a pitch invasion every time the ball went out of bounds in football and everyone just got on with it like it didn't happen cause some random middle aged dude just jumped in and did the goal kick.

Rally trucks are actually from neighbouring Estonia (flags on the door too, as well as the front grille). You can find videos on youtube of WRC team bosses battling in the trucks during Rally Estonia.

The man in the hat should be meme in the rally community. Almost always the first person to arrive at the crash scene. And can anticipate before the crash happens, he is clearly very used to seeing cars about to crash. He deserves big respect!

In Sweden, guys like him are called "Vultures": They go to rallies to feast on crashed cars. As a competitor, you love these guys though. If you mess up, you wanna do it infront of them, because they know how to quickly help you out and get the car on the road again.

My theory is that hat-guy is pretty seriously autistic or aspegers or something similar, and he loves this activity where he's just focused on 'the hook'. As a car approaches he gets a massive dopamine hit in anticipation of the accident and hook use, but most of the time nothing happens and he has to reset. Jimmy was wondering how early he saw a crash? His secret is that he goes *every time*, crash or not. He's been doing this his whole life, his father did it, and his father before him. The hook is everything.

Having been to the WRC rally in 2007 for the full weekend, all I can say is you HAVE to witness it at least once. Maybe even do the drive there in a rally legend (your Scooby?). Did mine in a Mini Cooper, the fans know their shit and are crazy about it all at once, unforgettable event!

I have been involved in rally photography for almost 40 years and have been a co-driver for over twenty years. In recent years, the pilots have been 11-14 years old. I understand if the car can't stay on the road. As a bystander or in the co-driver seat. Experiences. The truck in 7:26 is from the favorite class of Estonian rally fans. Old Soviet GAZ51. Crazy machines and crazy drivers. Fences, bushes, poles, trees, traffic signs have disappeared from the side of the track after passing them.

I remember back in 2021 when me and my friend were driving our first rally. We were fighting for podium but there was this one corner where we went a bit wide and allmost rolled, we was on two wheels but there was this small tree/bush what pushed us back on our wheels and first thing I saw when we landed was Aarne with his tow rope in front of our car😂 and this ”roll” happened like in 5 seconds or something so he basically must been on the road even before he even saw us coming🤣 most memorable moment from the first rally!

The theory I have is he competes himself or is a local to the stages, knows exactly where most people will bin it, stands at those corners and knows who is destined for the bin just by their corner entry. So is already on the move because he knows their in the bin already.

I went to one stage on the Brazilian Rally Championship. They are SO rigorous on where we can stay to wach, but man, its soooo fun! I got hit by a stone on the shin that a Lancer threw sliding on a 90º turn. beautiful stuff
