Another episode of whetstone war! This is a strange battle. The green brick of joy is rated 2000 grit. The challenger is rated from 2000 to 4000. We’re going to find out who performs better. It’s an awkward matchup and we recognize this. Excited to bring you something different.

I love my Green Brick of Joy, but whenever I soaked it, there were never any bubbles coming out of it. So now I treat it as a dunk and go. 10 seconds under water and it's ready to go. Very happy with this Vlog by the way. I much prefer to see stone differences, than knife differences.

Might as bubbles forever. So I don't know if they're making them different now. Maybe I have an older one

IT IS NOT A SOAKER. I have used it as a splash and go and works fine. But excels with a 1-2 minute soak. You don’t have to spray water as much and it loads less after a very quick soak. It is also a soft stone, definitely not hard and with bad technique can be gouged easily.
@roshanvermezyari5273
@roshanvermezyari5273 Год назад
@@nadm I think you may have an older one. My initial out of box soak was 10-15 minutes. I used it today ZERO bubbles but a quick soak makes it a better performing stone in my experience so far.

Nice to see another interesting video. I have a love-hate relationship with my Green brick. I like the finish, but hate that is is not that fast, clogs/loads easily and has a soft surface that is easy to cut into and the feedback is rather muted. I tend to not use it much as I have stones that I just like more in more than one of those ticks. I find it not bad, just not close to perfect for what I prefer unlike the ones I tend to prefer more. The type of feedback matters a lot to me as it makes me enjoy using a stone or not. This may be another expensive video to watch as it reminds me of how I've never tried out the red aoto (or the JNS blue aoto) and along with a couple of other items I've wanted from them for a long while.😃
@nadm
@nadm Год назад
It's funny because it seems like it'll do it all. It'll last forever. It doesn't cost a lot. It's not spectacular but it gets it done.
@hoggif
@hoggif Год назад
@@nadm That's so true. It is not that it doesn't get a job done. It does. The size is huge too. I just don't enjoy using the green brick. Perhaps I'll like the red aoto, we'll see when I eventually get one. When I have lots and lots of excellent stones around, it makes me picky. I want to enjoy it rather than just get the job done. The green brick of joy just is missing the joy for me.
@hoggif

I actually just got JNS red Aoto and the smaller JNS blue dotted aoto. What lovely stones! I prefer them over the green brick. As first expressions I like the feedback of red aoto and it seems like a harder stone than green brick (in positive way). The green brick feels clearly more fine (and has a bit finer scratch pattern) than red. Red seems to contain more coarse particles in mixture. I would estimate the blue aoto to be quite similar in pattern than green brick. Blue one is hardest of these all. Some day I'd like to try out some natural aotos, but unfortunately getting a few different to try out cost more than reasonable. I did not try to find out which cuts a bit better than some of these. Every one of these made an excellent edge. Either one you choose, you get a stone that gets the job done quite well.
@nadm
@nadm Год назад
@@hoggif I agree. It was a very close race. I think if you’re in Europe, then getting one closer with shipping and taxes is the best choice but if you’re in America, the green brick is an easier purchase, considering all things equal.
@hoggif
@hoggif Год назад
@@nadm They have free shipping worldwide if you but not that much stuff. A couple aotos will do that or an aoto +1-2 other stones. Sure, if you only get one, you'll need to consider shipping. I actually got the idea to try that out from your channel and it was worth the money to get one. Thanks! (I had the idea for a while already for something to try out one day)

Hi Greg, I am a big fan of the green brick of joy. It's rated to be 2000# but you can easyly achieve a 3000# grid finsh with it only by playing with mud (nagura) and different pressure. It really works. It works brilliant on white #1 and it also works on pm-steel. I love it!
@nadm
@nadm Год назад
Some people have said they thought it was above 2000 but I'm able to sharpen and get a great edge with it so I don't think it could be too much higher because then you're really just polishing
@sonkekoster3105

@@nadm Yes you are right - but I like to play a little bit with the green brick of joy. It's alot of fun. I use the stone as entry stone and major stone for my sharpening. Because I don' t use my knives till they are really dull. And for some of my knives the green brick of joy is totally enough. It's sharpen them up, strop them on the stone and go to a leather strop - done! Totally fine - let's go to the kitchen! On my last session I tryed this for one knife and for two others I progressed to a natural begium brick (~5000#-6000#) and for the last knife even to my Morihei Karasu 9000#. That's fun - to see how the blades behave on the different products.

The aotoshi/green brick is 4k if not 4.5 or maybe even 5k if a little loaded and a very very decent finnisher on most blades. Its dang good at removing scratches. Hm mine is completely splash n go weird that it needs so long a soak ive heard of like 30-60 seconds but not 10-15 minuttes maybe something are wrong?

You're making me wonder if you have the same one. It definitely has bubbles coming out of it forever. It sits for a long time. That is always been the case. I have been able to easily get a sharp edge and I would never be able to sharpen something on a 4K. So I don't know if we have the same one madeThe same way. Interesting. You can go back and look at my other video on just the green brick of joy. Performed extremely well when sharpening. Some people say it's rated a little higher but you jumped all up to 4000.
