Update! I went to my local favorite “The Party Source” (you should look this place up!) And there were 2 Plantation XO - the one I got being “Guatemala” and the other one being maybe the traditional or 20 year XO? Not sure. That seemed like a gift set. Now I don’t know what I have?! Lol!
@StevetheBarmanUK
@StevetheBarmanUK 2 года назад
There's only one Plantation XO. Thats the Barbados. I think the Guatemala you're looking maybe a very old Plantation, yes it was labeled XO, but a very limited rum as part of their Single Cask range. I think maybe have been pre 2018...but don't hold me to that. If you can get a bottle of it, you'll probably never be able to get another. Where is the XO (which is a 20th anniversary Rum...not a 20yo Rum) is a ongoing general release. Hope that helps.

Recently, I had the Appleton 12 in rum&coke while I was in Ocho Rios, and it moved into my top 5 easily, possibly top 3 for rum&coke. I've never mixed it, but I do very much appreciate the El Dorado 12 as a sipping rum. Their 15 and 21 are both excellent as well at a higher price point. You've also sold me on the Plantation XO, and it's on my list to try. I'll be in Barbados in the near future as well as possibly the Dominican, so i plan on doing some extensive rum shopping. Your channel has been a great help in my rum research.

Another awesome video Steve. I like the way you organized the rum in this one. Sweet to woody. What's good in a daq. What's good in a Rum and Coke. Might have to check out the Flor De Cana. You didn't put it in the "woody" end of the spectrum. I'll have to try Plantation XO in a daq. Didn't think to try that. I have tried Appleton 12 in a daq. Couldn't make it work for some reason.
@StevetheBarmanUK
@StevetheBarmanUK 2 года назад
Don't get too fixated on "Woody". most Rums will have that element as they're cask aged. And if its something you can't get round to liked, perhaps your palate maybe better suited to the 5yo Rums...or sweetened Rums. Diplomatico, Don Papa for example. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Hi Steve, always cautious about rum since my age 17 debacle 50 years ago, it has only been with cocktail making I have bought different styles. I was given the rum tasting pack of 5 nips by the Master of Malt, as a retirement gift! They were my only sippers with their tasting notes. I actually prefer single malt whisky as sippers in the winter late evening with shortbread by the fire. But rums are a rock in my cocktail bottlestock. Kraken as specified for A Right Hand Twist, Havanah 3yo as a workhorse, Appleton 8yo for Jamaican, Wray & Nephew for OP. Used up my Woods in making Allspice dram and most of remaining Pineapple Grenade, rest went in my chocolate orange bottle. My Havanah Spiced is still almost full, so little used and I will replace my Goslings for Dark & Stormiest. Nick from York.

I have a bottle of Flor De Cana 12 from a few years ago that was maybe half full. I decided I need to get back to using it, so I tried sipping it first but wasn't really on board. Felt very muted compared to other rums, and I was getting a chocolately note. I decided to use it as a mixer now and have been enjoying it both in rum and cokes as well as rum and pineapple. For the price, I'm probably going to stick with Flor De Cana 7. The rest of these (at least the ones I can get here in the US) are all excellent sippers!

@StevetheBarmanUK Год назад
Smooth as a bit of a false thing to be honest. Smooth normally = Add Sugar. Cos by sheer nature of barrel aging you’re gonna pick up the harsher Woody/Oaky notes. A lot of Rums do have added sugar, it’s just really the big brands like Appleton, Mount Gay and Doorlys (to start) and some of the new Indy UK Distilleries who are trying to do things properly. It’s also worth noting that most Cask Strength stuff will be sugar free too.

Hey Neil, Cask Strength Rum isn't really my forte. I love Rum at about 45-50%. Any more than that and they can become too...well not something you can sit and really enjoy! That said, I am loving Kits (Ninefolds) Cask #2 which he released in January. #3 is due in April/May next year. Thats 59%. However, if you asked some people that do love that kinda stuff, I've no doubt they'd recommend some of the Foursquare ECS stuff. I'm not the biggest Barbados fanboy, I prefer St Lucia, or Trinidad...or Cuban stuff. BUT, coming from Whisky, i pretty much guarantee that Foursquare will be up your Street. Expect £65-£100 (if not more) for Cask Strengths though.

Sugar is VERY common in a lot of Rums. And that’s okay. Don’t be frightened of it. Granted some excessively high like Diplomatico and Don Papa for example. But in a lot of cases it’s a helpful and tasty addition. Take the guys at Plantation, they have exceptional Blending and Distilling skills, but the simple fact is, they’ll add a touch of sugar where necessary to bring out other flavours…not just to sweeten up. So yes you’d be missing out on some Bangers. The whole plantation portfolio for one. Without even mentioning the Solera stuff. I know Rum Geeks hate Solera, but you can’t knock Ron Zacapa for example.

So i would suggest (as you're a whisky drinker) going straight in for something Like Doorlys 12, Appleton 12 (although i still really rate Appleton 8). Chairmans Legacy. Flor De Cana 18 (i think the FDC 12 maybe too easy going for you). You have to bear in mind though what you deem as sweet. Cos I am shocked by the S&C. There are Rums with lots of added Sugar...DIplo. And there are Rums that have no added Sugar, S&C deffo has no added Sugar. So i think you'll taste something like Appleton or Doorlys 12 and find them Sweet... even though there is no added Sugar. The reason being Rum is made from Sugar Cane Juice or Molasses. Which by default is obvs sweeter than Whisky. However, it's not Sweet because of Sugar. Its sweet cos of the base product. But it will be the higher aged stuff that has spent more time in ex Bourbon Oak Barrels, which pick up those "Whisky" traits. For me, I want Rum thats Rum. I don't love Rum that borders on Whisky. So i avoid stuff like Foursquare ECS Rums.

Of these, Plantation is my favorite. But Im a high proof whiskey drinker, so when you move above the $50 price tag, I move more to the blended Rums produced by Foursquare more often than not. 2008,Redoubtable & Indelible all on my bar shelf right now.

See. I find it really interesting to get the Whisky drinkers POV. Cos I’m not a whisky fan. I come from sweeter palate and working up to the foursquares. But you guys, straight in with the big boys. @@StevetheBarmanUK Prior to getting into higher proof whiskey, I was mainly a Tequila drinker. Tears of LLorona is the highest proof offering I enjoyed at 86 proof. And Plantation XO was my go to Rum at 40 proof. I started in with the Jack Daniels offerings, and eventually Uncle Nearest 94 & 100 proof whiskeys(1884 & 1856). And over the course of a year or two, progressed into the Higher Proof Uncle Nearest offerings(1820 & Master Blend) in the 120 proof range as well as Elijah Craig Barrel Proofs. As my palate became used to the higher proof stuff, my interest in Foursquare grew. Also because of the way they blend to bring outstanding offerings. Since finding Foursquare, I have not strayed from the offerings they have much. I still enjoy Plantation XO but just continue chasing the Foursquares and higer proof offerings.

I hear you. It is quite funny that Foursquare as that loyal following. I know so many Rum lovers that will only drink a Foursquare. I understand why. Totally. I'm just a variety kinda guy and the Foursquares are just a bit beyond me at the moment. As in, even though I like them, I can't justify the price compared to something half that, that I enjoy just as much, if not more. Thats why peoples Rum Journeys intrigue me!

Only thing about these Foursquares, is they are limited botteling, so , like with me Redoubtable & 2008 are my favorites, but you cant find them easily now as you could when first released. So in that case, my fall back is Plantation XO. I can usually find that readily

Steve, a number of your videos have stated that Barbados does not allow added sugar to their rums. Why/how does Plantation have added sugars?
@StevetheBarmanUK
@StevetheBarmanUK 4 месяца назад
I don’t think I’ve ever said that. 3 of the 4 Barbados distillery’s don’t add Sugar and want a Barbados GI (at the moment there is no law to prohibit it), however it’ll probably never happen as WIRD (Plantation owned) is the biggest exporter of Barbados Rum on the island. So the local government won’t sanction a GI anyway as they’d lose the majority of their export income to the island!

Interesting video I am a sipping rum man rather than cocktail of these Flur De Canna and Cobay would be my stand out picks. El Darado 15 is much better than the 12. What Agricole would you suggest? An interesting you say El Dorado 15yo is better than the 12yo, as i never find too many people that think that way...it's why their 12yo is their biggest selling Rum. But of course the ED15 has plenty of fans otherwise they wouldn't make it. My other Question though... Flor De Cana... are you the same with that, so you prefer the 18yo over the 12yo?

@@StevetheBarmanUKsticking to your budget if I had to pick a mainstream Agricole I would probably go of St James XO, Clement XO is another option but from memory that's around £55. ST Aubain also make some good options around that price point but less mainstream. I know I an in a minority when it comes to El Dorado, suspect the cost if the 15 is why tge 12 is more popular, but IMO the 15 is a much rounder smoother drink, especially since they reformulated, Actually my favourite El Darado is the Port Morant bottling, but that's serious cash

Just to pick you up slightly in a nice way…don’t confuse the Plantation XO as a 20yo. It’s far from that. Legally and Technically a 3yo. (Age is always the lowest Rum/Whisky in the blend). The 20th purely refers to the anniversary year. As I say in the video, it’s 8-15yo Tropical Aging, then 3-10 Continental (I think). That said, it’s flippin delicious and I absolutely love it to bits. Totally my vibe and annoys me the Canadians pay half the price for it!! 🤦‍♂️😂😂

12 YO is a great age range I'd also like to cheat and sneak in a 10 YO, the RL seale bottle :P If I'm not gonna cheat I would probably go ED12, though FDC12 is also very nice, and I actually find the ED12 to be fairly fruity, maybe more dried fruits and more in the back, but its undeniably there for me through the whole experience, ED12 was my favorite rum for a while even! It makes a banging rum and coke/cuba libre! (please compare the rum and coke with the cuba libre, is the lime worth it? I vote YES! unless you are using spiced rum, then it get in the way!)

@@StevetheBarmanUK Can't get any other Doorly's than the 5 YO here unfortunately, I know I'm missing out big time there but it is what it is. We can't all have the same taste buds either but I really do enjoy that rum! A big factor to consider though is that we don't get the same choice of picking up a Doorly's bottle at 47% ABV all willy nilly either, its Real McCoy or that single 5YO from Doorly's all at 40%. I might go back to Mount Gay once I pick up the BB an XO as I have planned to do but out of the commonly available Barbados rums available here the 10 YO at 46% ABV does bring something nice to the table compared to the other 40% options I really like the ED12 too though but I find myself more drawn towards the ED21 these days, and the ED rum for me fills a different hole in my rum heart, same with the Plantation XO, its really good but it again fits in a different category from both the ED and the RL Seale for me and they can't really replace each other because of that, I NEED them all :p And yeah, a cuba libre VS rum and coke video would be interesting I think!

Yeah. I can understand that. But on the whole you’d be making Old/Rum Fashioneds with Cask Strength stuff. Not 40% stuff. Diluting 40% just leaves the liquid flat. But bringing down say a 50-55% Rum or Whiskey to 40-45% is fine…it may open it out a bit. Although for me, opening out a Rum is different to Whisky. Whisky can be really harsh at 50-55%. Rum not so much. Hope that makes sense. Basically, the majority of Rums I have are 40% ish and are really not going to benefit from drinking them at 30%. Don’t get me wrong, they’ll still taste great. But not as good as at normal Strength.

Thanks a lot Steve, for your educational and cognitive reviews) I'm a newbie to rum but having been a deep rooted whisky drinker for years (I'm 62), seem to be aquiring the real taste for decent sipping rums. But my pallate is rather on the drier side than on the sickly sweet side. I can't say i've tried loads of rum but i've already started collecing that "stuff" in my " wheel house")))By now i've already got 5 various rums-Plantation X0 (even on the drier side , i liked it a lot), Matusalem 23, 15, Viejo de Caldas 15, Havana Club Seleccion de Maesro Barrel Proof (45%ABV), and my latest aсquisition was Dillon XO (9y.o) agricole from Martinique. The only rum i've disliked in my "rum journey" was "Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva'(turned out way way too sweet for me). Prices in Moscow(Russia) are quite resonable for some (40 dollars on sale for Plantation X0 and 55 for Matusalem 23 in one of a liquor store) and unreasonable for others (Doorly's 12 at 70 bucks,)but yet others disappeared at all (such as Appleton Estate 12) as to Dillon XO agricole- around 40 bucks. Thanks again for your "sweetshop labour" If you've tried any of the listed above, i wonder what you"ve liked except for "Plantation" XO. Cheers!
