What if you could only have 3 bottles of rum?

If you could only have 3 bottles of rum, what would they be? Instead of just answering the questions myself I enlisted the help of ‪@ultimatemaitai‬ , ‪@therumrevival‬ , and ‪@StevetheBarmanUK‬
I gave us 2 rules. First, it needed to be somewhat available, meaning it could not be a historic bottle or impossible to find. Second, it needed to be replenishable which meant no limited edition releases or one-off rums
A huge thank you to Kevin, Arminder and Steve for playing along. Comment on this episode with your 3 picks as well! You can find all 4 of us Instagram as well.

Plantation 3 star as an all purpose base mixer and daiquiri rum, Smith & Cross as salt and peppar for the wonderful jamaican overtones, Worth park 109 for the bold and dark (and slight liquorice) notes it gives to a drink. Would never want to be without any of these.

Great picks from everyone. I haven't had the Uruapan Blanco, but I do adore the Anejo. Gonna have to check out the Blanco soon. And the cameo from Arminder was very fun. I'm not familiar with his channel but definitely going to check it out! As a fellow Bay Area native, having access to so many amazing liquor stores makes it so easy to find new bottles. I've been meaning to join Bitters & Bottles rum club for a while but haven't made the commitment. I think they featured a limited St. Benevolence expression last year at one point that looked really interesting. I think my three bottles would be Appleton 12, Hamilton White Stache, and Chairman's Reserve. Gives great coverage over a wide cocktail family. But man, three bottles just isn't enough, is it? Like Steve said, good chance if you asked me again tomorrow, I'd have three different picks!

Very difficult to decide. I love the Mai Tai and when I saw the first time Kevin Crossman’s @ultimatemaitai recipe for “the ultimate Mai Tai,” I knew that I want to try that. I bought all the bottles I need it for but the biggest problem was to get the Appelton 12, which is also quite pricey here. So, if I could choose four bottles, it would be those for the ultimate Mai Tai. Now that I can have only three Rum’s and I do like other Cocktails as well, my go to rum’s are: •Bacardi Gran Reserva 8 years (My first ever Rum and still love it) •Plantation 3 Stars (for lighter Cocktails) •Plantation Xaymaca (Why I chose Xaymaca over Smith & Cross? Same reason as for the Appelton 12, not so easy to get it here)
@keneto29

My list will be mostly skewed towards Martinique rhum since that is mostly what is available easily in France, so I will start with Rhum J.M XO as a sipper. This is the rhum that sparked my interest in rhum when I smelled it while visiting the distillery and still my favorite. Next, I'll pick La Perle which is a white rhum agricole 66% ABV with an intense lime smell that. Last one, I'll choose HSE Black Sheriff as a nice agricole ambré with a bourbon finish making it more mellow and versatile in cocktail tnah other agricole.

From the narrow selection I currently own and have had (33 rums) I would have to go with: - Appleton Estate Rare Casks 12 Year - Plantation 3 Stars - Smith & Cross Jamaica Navy Stength I'm receiving Appleton 21 and Hampden Estate Pure Single Jamaican 8 Year in the coming days, and I'm hoping they would be on my list... but as I've not had them yet...

If I had to pick only 3 rums, they would be: Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black, Appleton Estate 12 Year, and Plantation O.F.T.D. I agree with you that I've never had a Hamilton rum I didn't love. I wish they were more readily available. Keep up the great work! Love your channel!

I'm pretty new to trying different rums, but so far I think my three would be Probitas, Hamilton OFTD, and Plantation 5 year - but I'm still looking for a more aged rum that I like better. Rum Fire, Demerara rums, and aged agricoles are also high on my list to try.

Now that's a toughie. Smith & Cross Traditional Jamaica Rum - I just love the taste, the aroma, ABV is on point to mix in cocktails. This is now my go-to rum when I want to mix something delicious that does not require absence of ester funkiness. Second is Rum-Bar Overproof. A good additional of strength where it's needed, but also a welcome addition of banana with some other fruity, funky aromas. The last one... that's gonna be a spectrum - either Trois Rivieres VSOP for a great martinique rhum agricole or a Plantation 3 stars for its approachable taste and price. If we're talking rum aficionados, then rhum agricole. Great video by the way! As usual on your channel :)

@@befreebetrue I'm not saying this is my opinion (it is 😇), But I genuinely used to Love ED12. However, ED as a whole has stood still, not evolved. It's decent Rum. Really decent. Their only problem is that there are sooooooooo many new Brands/Distilleries...or even old Distilleries (Worthy Park) doing things differently these days. In any niche, you can't stand still, you have to evolve. ED just haven't evolved (as yet), therefore not attracting new people to the brand. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a Brit who gets attracted by shiny new things! 🤣

#1 is Plantation 3 star, for the flavor and value, it can't be beat. #2 is the first rum I had long ago when I learned there were rums that were just made for slamming at college parties, but for actual flavor, and that's Appleton Estates Signature. Sure, it's their simplest, but it's got a special place for teaching me about rum. #3 might break your rule of availability, but only because it's from a smaller distiller on the east coast, and its Maggie's Farm Rum 50/50 Dark. Lots of warm cinnamon and spice notes. If you can get it, Derek, I would definitely give it a try.

My problem is I'm in Ohio and most of these are not on our shelves...no Hamilton, Smith and Cross, Worthy, Wrey and Nephew, and even the Plantation Xaymaca is going away. I did manage to pick up a bottle today though before it disappears. Appleton 12 is available, but I have sticker shock for that one at $43 for a mixer...I do have an Appleton Signature, but from what I have read it is not nearly as good as the 12.

Of all the rums in the above video, I have the Appleton 12, and have seen the Hamilton 151 at my local store (I have 2 other overproofs and I'm running out of room, will give that a try next). None of the others suggested exist here in New Mexico at all, sadly. If I was picking only 3, The Appleton 12 is a good choice, then a cane juice rum (I have a few, hard to pick 1 without doing a side by side), then probably a non-Jamaican just to have all the cocktail bases covered, maybe a Demerara? An interesting exercise to be sure.

My experience is limited but so far I seem to be a Plantation guy. I love their rums and while I really like the Appleton 12 I don't think it's as good as Plantation XO. So Plantation XO will be my first choice, then I think Plantation Pineapple is really good for cocktails so that will be my second choice and then... hmm... Plantation OFTD. The issue of course is that I haven't chosen any white rums so if I had to I'd get rid of the Pineapple and go with the 3-star which I don't particularly like but it works.

I didn't like this video, I friggin loved it. It's interesting to see which rums would be the essentials for everyone that clearly loves them. Definitely going to try Rum Fire and Appleton 12.

No love for Probitas? Smith and Cross and El Dorado 12 to round it out.

No love! If I'm going to limit myself to 1 white rum then it needs to be more broad to me and not intensely flavorful/pungent. I really like Probitas, but it's not my go to for a clean white rum.

How can nobody say Plantation 3 Star or Smith and Cross. Essentials.
@makeanddrink
@makeanddrink 7 месяцев назад
That’s the beauty of the process. Everyone can choose whatever they like best. I can’t speak for them, but 2 choices were Rum Fire which would eliminate the need for Smith & Cross as it’s much more flavorful/pungent/funky. I’m assuming Steve preferred his white rum pick over 3 Stars and when I blind taste tested 9 white rums in a Daiquiri, 3 stars was 8 out of 9.

This was a fun, albeit super difficult question! I tried to pare down my list as much as I could, and here's what I came up with: Saison blended aged: a blend of 5-7 year rums from Barbados and Trinidad that are then finished in cognac casks. At 42%, this is like Doorly's 8 or Plantation 5 star but amped up with rich notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, and hints of toffee on the finish. Beautiful sipper that lends itself well to cocktails. Papa's Pilar Blonde: while I wanted to choose Havana Club 3 year, I wanted to be fair to all my American friends. This is another blend of 3 year rums from Panama, DR, Venezuela, and even Florida. It uses the solera blending process to include all the aging characteristics from prior bourbon and sherry barrel aging, once again clocking in at 42%. For a white rum, this bottle is rich, full, and almost has a silky mouthfeel. To match that is a palate of butter, stone fruits, light nuts, and a teasing hint of vanilla. This is by far my go to for daiquiris (if I had to use one rum for it). And last, but not least, it's... Rhum J.M. VSOP!: this was love at FIRST SIP, friends. I was already in love with aged rhum agricoles, especially those from Martinique, but this puts all of it on a whole other level. Aged for 6 years in bourbon barrels, this is a beautiful bounty of marshmallow, hazelnut, a bit of dried herbs, and even a faint hint of salinity from the barrels being so close to the ocean... Amazing on its own, kills in any cocktail that needs it. Please try this at least once. This was tough! I wanted to choose something funky, but if I had to also sip each of these rums, I'd prefer something more mellow and less in my face. I'll save those for cocktails all day

@@makeanddrink I look forward to hearing what you think! Arguably, it was hard for me to get as well. I had to hop over to New Mexico to find my first bottle, but it was totally worth it!

If you broke my arm I’d say the Hamilton West Indies 1670 blend and RumBar OP. Could not live without both aged and unaged Jamaican. Don’t think I’d ever get tired of those three.

Tough one. . Things aren’t very cheap in the UK. I mainly only make cocktails with rum, but I’d drink it neat if I wanted to. . Appleton 12 Havana Club 3 And the third is hard. Either El Dorado 12, Pussers 151 maybe.

I loved this video. @therumrevival and @StevetheBarmanUK are new channels to me, so I just subscribed to both. My three bottles would be: -Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black -Clement VSOP -Plantation 3 star Wray and Nephew has been my go-to Jamaican overproof, but seeing Rum Fire pop up twice here makes me want to order a bottle and give it a try.
