Which 7-10 conversion was the best?? Ranking every 7-10 spared on a PBA telecast

The 7-10 split has only been converted 4 times on television in the history of the PBA. It certainly requires more luck than judgement and shows how difficult it is to make the 7-10. 3 out of the 4 bowlers to convert the 7-10 split were left handed.
In this video we take a look at the 4 times this split was converted and rank them to see which was the best one.

That Brian Voss one in the beginning is my favorite one. He needed that 7-10 to make it as the 5th seed along with his mixed doubles partner Diandra Asbaty and they climbed the ladder to win the 2010 Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship. Asbaty was on fire throwing strike after strike and even picked up a 4-7-10 split on the telecast. Voss needed that win for a tour exemption for the next season and it kept him on tour. Huge stakes and they pulled it off.

I've made it once and it wasn't even in league. One of my friends from kid's league and his dad were bowling on a random day I went in and they asked if I wanted to bowl with them. I said yes and left the 7-10 on the very first shot. It was cool that there were maybe 5 other people total in the bowling alley that heard me make it but it was really cool.

I actually bowled next to Neuer at a tournament (I think it was two years ago) Lo and behold he left the 7-10. I told my buddy he had to watch his pick up attempt and he FIRED the ball as expected. Unfortunately he didn't pick up the spare, but just watching his attempt in person was awesome.

I picked up the "big 4" a couple of weeks ago. About a week before that, I almost picked up a "Greek church" .. cleared the 4-10, clipping the 4 which slid across taking out the 9-10 and rattled the 6, but the 6 didn't quite fall, so very close.

The most difficult spare is the big four, which was only made once on TV by WRJ.

Neuer's 7-10 is probably the most impressive due to the machine/curtain area. The Brunswick GSX machines are very difficult to get pins to bounce out of the back with the floppy curtain that is back there.
@YouTubeBowlersTour
@YouTubeBowlersTour 7 дней назад
Exactly. The curtain and cushion on a GSX are both separated and vertical. It’s basically impossible to pick it up hitting the pin dead on. Neuer didn’t hit the pin dead on. Instead he bounced it off the kickback which bounced off the curtain/cushion somehow.

It's certainly difficult but not impossible, I find it a bit annoying whenever Randy Pedersen jinxes it by commenting something like "that pit will suck the pin away, it's never been made before on this machine" when there are a handful of examples proving him wrong.

I belive the Greek church numbers are probably skewed by the fact, that most guys are going for the count, rather than going for the conversion. Shooting the left of the 4 pin, is the easiest way to convert the Greek church, but you only go for 2 pins rather than the 3 on the right.

And Note How Chris Schenkel handled Roths 7-10 by Letting the Crowd react rather than Yelling and Screaming like Rob Stone and Randy Pederson going Overboard. And Schenkel’s Conversion was A TV FIRST but handled with class.

@gwencrawford737 8 дней назад
Correct! Not just Chris and Bo's voices, but also look to the camera cuts. Roone Arledge was the magic behind ABC sports, and his view was, that it was all about athletes and the sport itself. That's where the drama and viewers interest should be. The commentators and camera people and production were responsible to CAPTURE it... NOT GENERATE IT. The results spoke for themselves. People watch entire telecasts on RU-vid, from the old ABC Pro Bowlers Tour. If someone ever put the old tour telecasts on DVD and sold them, they'd probably make a few bucks on it. Fox Sports lost the plot years ago with all the other sports. Too much flash and nonsense that distracts from the sport itself, rather than enhances. PBA bowling is just another victim of this crap is all.

It’s wild that 3 of the 4 have been lefties especially since the overwhelming majority of bowlers have been righties.
@JamesGoll-tm6xu
@JamesGoll-tm6xu 7 дней назад
I believe the Greek Church has a lower conversion rate than the 7-10 split is because most PBA bowlers will go for the pins and attack this split by targeting the three pins. However, a bowling machine was able to be dialed into making this spare nearly 100% of the time by going after the two pins and kicking the 4-pins into the three other pins. Whereas, they were unable to adjust the bowling machine to make the 7-10 split in any consistent manner. Hence, the Greek Church appears to be the more difficult split because of the desire to maximize pin-count, and I also agree with your comment that making the 7-10 split certainly invovles "luck".
@anunheardtruth3071
@anunheardtruth3071 6 дней назад
Neuer's is impressive in that he did it on the GS-X which is notorious for the shock-absorbing moving curtain. Roth's conversion is interesting and there has been debate if the pin had bounced off an unseen pin in the pit. Sean Rash had an interesting conversion similar to Roth's but slower and more elegant, the pin didn't bounce out but got caught in something and twirled enough to hit the 7 - almost looks like it's sliding directly. On the other hand Osku Palermaa had a powerful conversion where it bounced off the rear-end of sidewall but not much in to the pit.
@Ryuh04
@Ryuh04 10 дней назад
The Greek Church has the lowest conversion rate, but it is not the most difficult spare. It has a lower conversion rate simply because 99% of the time you go for count, therefore having a lower chance of making it as the optimal way to make it is to aim between the 4-7 pins
@evan_headley
@evan_headley 10 дней назад
It’s a good point that the percentage is probably lowered due to going for count, but I don’t necessarily agree that going for the 4-7 or 6-10 is the optimal way to convert it, it’s still ridiculously hard either way. In my opinion the Greek church is easily harder than the 7-10 because there’s no risks with shooting it. Making corner pins is purely routine for pros and they essentially just rev up their ball speed and pray.

I converted the Church 4-6-7-8-10 totally by surprise back around 1979. I went for the 4-7-8-10 but never thought the 4 would ricochet and trip the 6 forward. Alan Bishop converted it on TV the same way.

I’ve been bowling my entire life, almost 40 years. I’ve never made the 7,10 but twice I’ve left the 6,7,10 and picked up the 7,10 leaving the 6 pin standing, go figure. To add insult to injury just last year I made the 8,10 with the 2,8,10 standing I threw a hard back up ball just barely catching the 8 pin and sliding it over to the 10. Didn’t even think that was possible.

My 7-10 pickup was half luck and half watching how the pros do it. There’s a definite way that gives you the best chance. The other factor is the curtain.
@TheCD5150
@TheCD5150 2 дня назад
The best was Anthony Neuer. He converted it on Brunswick GSX pinsetters which is because of the fact that the pin cushion and curtain are separate, and it is extremely difficult to bounce a single pin out of the back, let alone converting the 7-10.

My nod goes to Stayrook, only because his looked so seamless. He rolled it more softly than the others, but placed the ball against the 7 right where it needed to be.

I would argue that It was easier to spare the 7-10 back in the day, as it was alot more common to not have a backcurtain that was there to take all speed out of the pins compared to now, where its basicly everywhere that there is a curtain that is only ankerd in the top

I’ve picked up the Greek church twice by sliding the 4 into the 6-9-10. I do think why it doesn’t get picked up as often is that most bowlers will just go for count and just pick up 6-9-10 and then sometimes the 7 gets picked up too, but not the 4

I will say in regards to Neuer's conversion, you HAVE to throw it hard to make it on those pinsetters. The GS series of pinsetter can be unforgiving with bouncing pins out unless you throw it hard. You also left out the fact that the 10 had caromed off the ball to get the 7.

SAme thing i say, now a days there is a back curtain to absorb all the energy from the pins, compared to back then THERE IS LEGIT NO curtain in some of the clips and the others, its ankered 2 places which doesnt take nearly as much energy out of the pins as if its only ankered in the top

@THEBESTBROWS

7-10 is the hardest because if u hit at the 3 at the right u can make so that the pins will slide and knock the other pins standing but the 7-10 is it very small room for the ball to make the pin slide or if u make it bounce on the other pin put that’s for me 0,3 chance of getting a spare. The Greek church is not harder why it is at 0,3 of chance of getting is because it’s not that often in PBA or in a regular bowling game u get a Greek church. It’s more “common” that u get a 7-10 and not the church
@anunheardtruth3071

you can't physically slide the pin due to the distance, but if it's caught in the back of the pit it can twirl around enough which is how Sean Rash converted it hitting it slow and wide (the ball almost fell in the gutter when it hit the 10)

Alright lets look deeper into this,if the most recent one is using what i think he is there's a good chance all of these balls are urethane Given my recent experience with 'impossible' splits i have a feeling that's something they'll all have in common I'm not half the bowler of the guys on tv but i recently spared 2 8-10s within 7 days,i did this by yeeting the ball at the 8 and having it bounce off the back into the 10,everyone tells you to pay attention to what the pins do and this is how i did it,i realised that for some reason or another,my spare ball (mix) or purple hammer seemed to do what the reactives rarely did by bouncing pins off the back at a much higher frequency Luck? Skill? Maybe more knowledge and luck with a dash of skill to hit the damned pin at that speed Also you've ranked them backwards,i feel that the most recent tv spare was more deliberate,he chucked it hard to bounce it off something,i don't think for a second he expected to spare it,but he did actually put in the effort and tried,the other 3 merely went for count and got super lucky
