In today’s video I share how I use azelaic acid and salicylic acid in my practice. They’re my two favourite acids but I use them differently, depending on the skin issues someone has. I hope you enjoy it!
Just a personal note here: I had the pleasure of having lunch with Dr Sam on Sunday. Not only is she funny but has the most flawless beautiful skin. Blown away! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@hulyalala946 I don't think she wears foundation, just a tinted moisturiser or sunscreen (Gossamer tinted SPF I believe). This assumption is based on her previous videos showing us how she does her makeup. 🙂
Gorgeous, gorgeous Wayne!!!! Am still not over the shock of hanging out in the flesh!! So charming and with the most immaculate skin. Available for videos + make-up anytime!!! 😍
My routine that helps eliminate redness and texture is cerave hydrating facewash>paula's choice bha>spritz avene water mist>facetheory lumizela azelaic acid>cerave pm/am. Leaves me with glowing skin.
Excellent video ... very informative. I have learnt so much from all your videos over the past few years . I use all your Flawless products and at age 76 am told that l have very good skin ! I am so grateful for all your information . Many heartfelt thanks !
Thank you so,much for your expertise. I have started using azelaic acid and my skin has never looked better. I get regular breakouts and so far I have had none.
Salicylic acid has always saved my pores and brightening/soothed my skin. Azelaic acid always irritated my skin and left a film. Also, I only use salicylic acid in a foaming cleanser (aveeno) so the fact that it’s so powerful yet gentle for a 30 second wash is astounding.
thanks as always! I use both and happy with the results. on my legs I suffer from ingrown hair, so almost daily I do a sweet scrub and then spread a lotion with glycolic. it helps me for dry skin. if i used Azelaic would it help my ingrown hair? pls you opinion means a lot to me dr Sam🙏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Wow, I have always had LOADS of clogged pores on my cheeks mostly but really all over my face and I have used retinols and use salicylic acid cleanser everyday and have just basically tried everything. A dermatologist recommended the ordinary azelaic acid treatment when I had a really bad allergic reaction. I used it up and never bought it again. Now I decided to use it again and for the first time ever I think my clogged pores are coming to the surface and unclogging. I always thought salicylic acid and retinol should take care of that but they never did. Now I think it must be the issue with keratin that had never been addressed. This is amazing! Loved learning!
I use salicylic acid for short contact therapy in the form of cleanser every day, followed by sunscreen in the morning or azelaic acid in the evening, with adapalene twice a week (Wed, Sun). Worked really well, i must say. And i have quite reactive oily skin. I sort of get the benefits of everything without having to give up anything.
I have used bha for 6months yet it never healed my skin problems, it got even worse. I followed the instructions on how frequent i should apply it but nothing worked but when i switch to azelaic acid in just a month my skin began to improve so much, the texture of my skin became smooth and no more breakouts and it lighten the darkspots left from my previous break out. Im asian brown girl btw, and my skin type is combination, but when i used the azelaic it felt like my skin is normal type I dont have any oil build up on my t-zone even for the whole day.
I use the 10% azelaic acid by TO and it has made wearing sunscreen daily bearable for me. It mattes the skin so that when I apply my “oil free” sunscreen I don’t look too shiny
I would recommend the NIVEA Shine control spf 50 or Nivea Sun Luminous 630 Anti-Pigment Fluid Spf50 for a really good (and cheap) mattifying sunscreen, it was a game changer for me! Or La roche Posay La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF50+ Sun Cream 50ml. Never used to wear sunscreen before because of how oily it made my skin but these 3 are genuinely wearable
Some of the Asian sunscreens I think are the best for oily skin. The Biore ones typically don't have fragrance either which is even better. They have alcohol in them which I just don't care about as an oily skin person and it makes me actually wear sunscreen whereas for years I avoided it because the formulations were so bad.
Hi Doctor, first of all thank lot for the informative video as always. i just have a question, i am currently on prescription steroid cream for a bad skin flare up (eumovate cream) and of course when the course finishes in 3 days i have to use the gentelests of products for a while..so when can i re introduce actives back to my skin? (tret and vitamin c) Thank you
hi! i have a oily acne-prone skin and ive used %20 percent prescribed azelaic acid cream in the past and my skin tolerated it really well but it's been a long time using it. Currently i have been using benzoyl peroxide for 4 months, at first it helped my active acnes but after one point it's not effective anymore and started to make my skin dry and irritated. I want to stop using benzoyl peroxide and start using azelaic acid again. I bought paula's choice bha and the ordinary's azelaic acid. I'm also using la roche hydrating face wash along with la roche toleriane moisturizer. So how can I incorporate paula's bha and TO's azelaic acid into my routine? thank you xx
I'm just about to start my trial of azelaic acid. Interesting how different everyone's skin is. Trial and error is necessary. Salicylic acid does little to nothing for my inflamed or hormonal acne, but works great for blackheads/whiteheads once I've gotten my inflammatory acne under control with products containing tea tree, artemesia, snail mucin, propolis/honey, and oral spearmint capsule. Benzoyl peroxide worked great for inflammatory acne and whiteheads/blackheads, but I quit using it after dealing with 20 years of bleached towels and shirts. I found that even adapalene made little to no difference in my inflammatory acne, but I continue to use it for a multipronged approach to treating acne, plus the hyperpigmentation and long term well-aging benefits.
@@Aryan-xh9ee Hi. No, I haven't been to a dermatologist, mainly because I'm not so interested in antibiotics long-term. I don't want to deal with potential antibiotic resistance or disrupting my normal flora. When untreated, my acne is moderate (100-200 papules, pustules, nodules, and comedones), but reasonably controlled with over the counter stuff and luckily minimal scarring. Not severe enough for me to do antibiotics, but I'm sure using them would simplify my routine! Recent incorporation of K-beauty and spearmint pills have been a game-changer.
Thanks so much for your videos on azelaic acid! I use both of these acids. I never knew salicylic acid was anti-inflammatory. I tend to use salicylic acid for whatever active breakout azelaic acid couldn't prevent. I mainly use azelaic for assistance with hyperpigmentation
@@santoshbansode9823 Very late reply. I'll respond in case someone else can benefit: I haven't seen any adverse effects in using them together. I have acne prone skin. I tend to use salicylic acid cleanser bar morning and night during a breakout. Outside of that, 3-4x a week at night. I use cos de Baja azelaic acid serum pretty regularly. I also have The Ordinary azelaic acid suspension. I use the suspension pretty infrequently but it's effective. Sometimes I'll layer salicylic acid cream over either one of these during a breakout at night or just use the cream by itself.
@@theunseen3 I'm sorry you had that experience. I don't use prescription doses of either one of the acids. I think I could benefit from a higher percentage of azelaic acid but I'm satisfied what im using and don't have health insurance so🤷🏾♀️
@theunseen3 Stridex is super harsh. You have to make sure you keep your face hydrated, I have mild hormonal acne and if I use things that make it feel tight/dry it ends up 10000x worse.
Great video. My holy trinity is Finacea 15% prescription azelaic acid, A313 retinol and a soothing avene moisturizer. I also do red light therapy. I was lucky to figure out this combo young at 20 years old. Strangers compliment my skin almost daily. I’m not a dermatologist but I know my sh*t. You’re welcome and do your research
Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me where is the best place to get Salicylic acid and Azelaic acid from? Also could you please tell me what is the circular hydration serum with hyaluronic acid and its benefits and I have dark spots under my eyes so could you please recommend me a product for this as well?
Heyy please help me out I wanted to treat my acne its not very harsh but still bad I strated using azelaic acid gel 15% and I ordered a moisturiser to apply before applying azelaic acid but I saw somewhere to not use AHA&BHA while we are using azelaic acjd And i just learned that salicylic is a bha Can u please lmk if its ok for me to use both the moisturiser first and thn azelaic acid gel spot treatment overnight or do i need to change my moisturiser
Hi Dr, thanks for your helpful reviews. A quickie, I am using azelaic and soolantra in combo and it works wonder for me. However, I have not been instructed on when stoping soolantra. Now my skin is perfect in 40 days. Do I have to continue until 3 months as I read anyway? Using 3 times per week at night. Thank you in advance from sunny Spain.
I have super oily acne prone skin. Through my teens, 20, 30 & early 40's I responded really well to topical benzoyl peroxide at 10% in concert with 2% salicylic acid wash and spot treatment. A year ago, At 45 I switched up my routine, to include anti-aging products. I dropped benzoyl peroxide and incorporated retinoids at night and vitamin C during the day...you touched on retinoids but how does Azalaic Acid and/or Salicylic acid applied during the day play with Vitamin C?
First, you can apply Vitamin C followed by Azelaic Acid. Our Brightly Serum is formulated with Azelaic Acid and Ascorbyl Glucoside (a form of Vitamin C) so you can combine those 2 steps in your AM routine ❤
@@DrSamBunting does.azelaic acid even out skin tone ? Can i put 15% azelaic acid with o.o25% of tretnoin together? Pleas.let me know and how long it takes to show result.plsss do.let ms kmow will he grateful to you❤️
Yes you can combine those... I have been using both since 8 months... 20% azelaic and 0.05 tretinoin... In the first 3 months, I have given time for my skin to adjust pH in btwn applications... In the first month, in my night routine, i applied tretinoin and azelaic acid respectively with 1 hour gap in between... In the second mnth, 45 min gap, 3rd month 30 min gap, 4th month 15 min gap, 5 th month 10 min, 6th month 5 min, and since 2 mnths I apply them with 2 min gap (i let the tretinoin get fully absorbed, so 2 min gap then apply azelaic acid) ... The combination works great for acne, pih, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and also pit scars ... Well, along with this, i am taking 500 mg Glutathione, 1000 mg vit C in the morning to help my PIH and Hyperpigmentation...... and 10 mg isotretinoin at night (still 3 months left on the treatment for isotretinoin) ... Apart from this... I am drinking 5gm of morning powder mixed in a glass of water in the morning, mixed seeds and berries in breakfast... 3 litres of water... Saffron, elaichi and spearmint herbal tea in the morning.... And oil pulling after brushing and flossing... 20 min mediation and 40 min yoga... I think all these things helped me.... Not only physical appearance but mentally and emotionally i feel good... I was a famous girl in college and in my office... but when acne hit me badly last year, i was all drowning... In the last 8 months, i didn't go out without a scarf covering my whole face... I felt like a failure and felt ugly... Zero confidence .... For the first time, last week, i went out with no scarf and felt so beautiful and confident.... 😊
I have oily/combination acne prone skin, and I'm looking to reduce hyperpigmentation and breakouts/clogged pores. Would it be ideal to use a gentle salicylic acid cleanser in the morning followed by vitamin c serum, and in the evening, same cleanser followed by azelaic acid? Also, do I need to double cleanse if i use a salicylic cleanser? (I wear water-resistant sunscreen) I love your videos ❤️
I always double cleanse wearing sunscreen my skin is much cleaner/clearer. Oil first to remove sunscreen then your salicylic cleanser. I'll never go back to single cleanse or micellar/wipes again. I use Azelaic at night too like you.
Salicylic acid is not found in aspirin, which is a derivative, acetylsalicylic acid. Don’t mean to nit-pic, but I have heard of people putting aspirin on their face, thinking it is the same thing. I am not certain, but could aspirin burn the face? I am a dentist, not a skin expert of course, but sometimes people put an aspirin tablet next to a sore tooth (does not help), and they burn their gums and cheeks.
I have acne prone sensitive combo skin. I have acne on my face and neck for a long time. It becomes itchy sometimes. I have bumpy forehead and acne on my whole face and neck. Also have blackheads and whiteheads and underneath acne. I went to derma they suggested me salicylic acid facewash 2% and niacinamide serum. It did controlled the condition but not fully. How can I get rid of acne
I have skin congestion all over my cheeks, skin colored bumps, it doesn't go away even though I tried salicylic acid. When I squeeze them some hard yellowish thing comes out or sometimes white paste like, but they are not sebaceous filaments. It comes on again and again on the same spot.
Is there anything that can help specially with whiteheads??? I've noticed many Whiteheads suddenly.. even though i follow good skincare routine.... I have dry skin but using salicylic acid because of whiteheads... Because of summers, I don't have dry skin issue... What should i use for whiteheads?? Or i should go to dermatologist??? They're difficult to remove.. i tried 5 yrs back and i still have spots after removal.... I live in India and can't afford any expensive foreign brands... Can you please help me with any good treatment... I mean glycolic or mandelic acid.. or any.. which one is good for the issue?
Hello Dr. Sam...Can I ask if its ok to use a salicylic acid cleanser and after that use an azelaic acid serum? Thank you Maam in advance! Hope you'll respond🙂
Good day i'm currently using a salicylic acid toner and then azelaic acid, niacinamide, and suncreen at the end during day time, is my routine okay? It kinda sting on my face but i do have a lot of blackheads and pimple marks, by the way i use a gentle cleanser
I have a sensitive skin type, is it safe for me to use Azelaic acid cream? I tried it twice and I notice that my skin got irritated. Is it a common effect? Should I worry?
What about the 100ml azelaic lotion by The Ordinary. It’s on my wishlist to use on my kp arms. Eucerin 10% urea lotion works wonders but I was thinking of using azelaic acid once or twice a week as a little extra boost.
Hello Dr Sam...dr I'm using granactive redinoid 5 in squalane as per your advice. I dont use any moisturizer with this should i use any? I have combination skin and Its very hot and humid weather here in pakistan so my skin gets oily when i use moisturizer
Oh my god yes! You'll regret not moisturising in the long term. You just need to find the right one for your skin. Make sure it is completely fragrance free and oil free. I know my oil production cut down hugely by removing all fragrance. Niacinamide also helps control my oil production. You can get that in a moisturiser or The Ordinary has a 10% Niacinamide serum with Zinc.
Yes Dr Sam. " If Skin colour should be change , that's depends on that what you are eating. " And especially oilskin should be more becearful. " Actually mine oilskin so, I'm start using from couple of weeks" (pears facewash) " so, using face creams that's not enough but also we should eat clean and fresh foods. " Thnx Dr Sam 👍😘
I always heap on moisturizer and can’t imagine not doing that. I have dry/dehydrated skin, and the azelaic acid would be insufficient in hydrating my skin.
Can azelaic acid 2% cause purging or irritate the skin? I have got mild itching in different parts of my face, having red bumps too. In the chin area i used to have closed comedones. Now i can feel they are turning into pimples. Can this be because i have been using azelaic acid all over my face?
I have been using Azelaic acid for over 6 months. Initially it used to be very irritating on the skin and the peeling a lot. I think I didn't witness any breakouts from it but if you believe you are purging you shouldn't purge more than a month I believe
I wouldn't. I would use salicylic in the morning and tretinoin at night. If you're not doing tret every night, alternate the days you use these products
Guy please help me answer this question. Should I use niacinamide products after or before using acid azelaic products and moisturizers? I am so confused right now.
I have experienced this too. I discovered that the issue wasn't the azelaic, which I now use with no stinging at all, the problem was I had a broken barrier due to other strong ingredients ( retinoids/benzoyl peroxide)
They're usually commercially available from 5% through to 20%. Try what suits your skin. I handle 10% fine I've used Paula's Choice and The Ordinary in the past. Finacea is 15% and in Australia we have one called Azclear which is 20% and that's a little too drying for me. It's also really going to depends on what is available in your country. I think in the US Finacea is by script. I know Australia and Canada have now stopped The Ordinary selling Azelaic Acid there (bummer). In Australia it's considered "pharmacy only" medicine.
