The Who - Can’t Explain is a longhorn. Love it. I got one back in 1999 and have played it to death. Forget black, bring back the metallic burgundy, Dano!
@wadenits

I read an interview with Rinus Gerritsen where he said he played a Gibson EB3 on the studio version of Radar Love. His original Danelectro that he played in the 1960s and 70s was stolen from his hotel room in America, he must have been totally gutted. I saw Golden Earring a few times. The first time was in the UK supporting The Alex Harvey Band before the Moontan album. Earring had the same management as The Who so they got to use The Who’s quadraphonic PA system and crew. Listening to Rinus playing his solo on his Dano in quadraphonic sound was something else. Earring never had such a good live sound as using that PA system. Golden Earring were dynamite as were the AHB

No, you're not crazy. Danelectro instruments often surprise players in a positive way. And they are not that expensive. Plus, the Longhorn is arguably their most iconic bass guitar model. I own one, copper burst.

I don't think there's anything wrong with owning a short scale as your only bass. I bought my first solid bodied shorty last month - an Ibanez Mikro - and it's probably becoming my main axe soon. It sounds great, feels good in my small hands (even though I'm a big fella) and is much easier on my busted back. That said, soundwise, I'd go with the Longhorn too!

Nothing wrong with short scale, plenty of great players have made good use of them, although if you're only going to have one bass and if you're not of a smaller stature then I'd get standard scale length. Loved the look of the longhorn though.

It was Leo Fender who went with the 34" scale for bass. He put the Pickup where he found harmonics, thinking he might have more harmonics picked up. Before this there have been lots of basses with shorter scale. I had a vintage Mustang from 1968 for vintage tones were asked for by the recording engineer. Now I have a vintage LesPaul Bass from Japan, persumably Hoshino, built in the 1980's. This 30" scale bass is more versatile as the Mustang. Short scale basses have a more beefy tone that suits a lots of music. But for a well articulated tone, especially when you tune down. Short scale basses give the string less tension what can give you a flabby feel - and a vintage tone.

Nothing wrong with short scale basses. I don't like them, but that is 100% personal preference and there are two main reasons that is my preference: first I like to pluck hard, I like to dig in and feel a solid amount of string tension, second I play a 5 string and that just ain't gonna happen with a short scale bass.

@domagojoinky8262
@domagojoinky8262 5 лет назад
@@Hennu_TRM Yes there are short scale 5 and 6 string basses. Some of them are really good. If you have money for a custom shop instrument, low B does not suffer even on short scale instrument, and high C will sing more. Check MTD 630 if I remeber correctly. 30" scale and it has a killer low B.
@Hennu_TRM
@Hennu_TRM 5 лет назад
@@domagojoinky8262 I'm not buying it. A short scale bass is just gonna have floppier strings. I just looked up some videos of people playing the MTD 630 and I definitely noticed some buzz on the low B string that wasn't there on the other strings. That buzz, which is what I want to avoid, comes from a floppy string hitting frets up the fretboard. I know you can adjust your playing a bit and do some things to mitigate that a bit, but I would rather just play a longer bass. I think it's easier to get a consistent tone and feel on a 5 string bass with a longer scale, and you can find some good options without going into "custom shop" pricing.

I loved the longhorn until I played one. Loved the sound hated the feel. Neck heavy didn't sit on the leg right. Never played Harvey so can't say. But the mustang is the best shorty on the market! Way better than the Epiphone SG bass. I have a 1972 music master with a old tele bass pickup. It's a monster!

I got one of the first Dano Longhorn reissues when they came out (in the iconic copperburst). The fret ends were downright dangerous. I didn't bond with that bass like I had hoped to. All mine are short scale: Fender Mustang, Squier Mustang and Bronco [hot-rodded], Warmoth, Epiphone, Acinonyx, etc. The Acinonyx is my current fave, very light and easy to play.
@markferguson3745

In a band context, being capable of switching to a baritone, a bass, or even a simpler synth, can help you break out of a tired formula.The two bass hook up, usually with a guitarist, was a thing in NYC Alt & " noise" bands in the 90's, way before Royal Blood and octave pedal rigs. Squier makes a vintage Mustang CV model that is close to original spec, with the low output pickups providing the unique sound.The CV Jaguar might be prettier, and have more range, (and IMO, it's their best design, period , guitar and bass)- but the Mustang is the cooler bass. The basic '59 Dano short scale is another great option that I've noted plays a little slicker than the Longhorn.It's hard to beat the lipsticks for sheer grind and cut, especially in those low frequencies. Years ago, I had a favourite poster of Link Wray playing a Longhorn,- why,I dunno,- but you should be following his lead, anyway.

The best guitar out of those you showed was definitely the Harley Benton! I myself will not buy another PRS, Fender or Gibson as long as I can get something of equal quality. I sold my PRS S2 Custom 24 paid $1500.00 for it and sold it for $700.00 on Ebay. That was half what I paid; so lost $700.00. I bought the equivalent Harley Benton for $200.00 and literally love that guitar; it plays, sounds and looks better than the real PRS. That Harley Benton is just below the good quality level. Of course it has a cheap looking pickguard, frets were not polished with tanned drummer skin and pick-ups could use more definition, For 20 to 30€ more, the JB-75 sounds a lot better or the PJ-74 if a P-Bass pick-up is desired. I love my Squier Vintage Modified Short Scale Jaguar. Here's some info about short scale basses: www.sweetwater.com/insync/long-short-scale-bass-differences-explained/ "However, many studios pros have long known a secret about the sound of short scale basses. The shorter strings demand lower string tension to be properly tuned. This gives the strings a kind of soft and floppy feeling but it also creates fatter, “blooming” low notes and what musicians perceive as sweet upper notes. So while long scale instruments were more common in professional settings, short scale basses didn’t fall completely out of use."
