I think the categories that each of these products fall into are game changers. Apart from distress oxides which are truly unique and widely available for most people, the rest can be substituted for similar products that work well for a fraction of the cost. A lot of the price is branding rather than a quality difference and sometimes tools might be technically better quality but not suit some people.

Every crafter has their personal preference which makes this industry so amazing! These are all products I have used for YEARS and I don't mind spending extra on things when they stand the test of time. :)

@@RebeccaKeppel of course that is your choice but I left my comment for other people who can't afford the branded tools so that they don't have to feel left out!

You make some good points. I bought a Spellbinders Prizm die cut machine a couple years ago--it is a midget galoot that got me into die cutting. I just upgraded to a Platinum 6 and it is perfect for what I do. Misti monopolized the market and kicked the Tonic Studios stamp platform to the curb before I could buy it at a reasonable price--for less than $20.00 I made myself a stamp press without hinges. I have had an old-school office guillotine cutter for years and bought a simple trimmer for smaller projects. I think that name recognition tends to command big money: I prefer to spend toward a bank of images, inks, and related tools. 😉

@@ArtyAntics I appreciate you saying so. As a newbie I didn't know the difference and got taken in alot. I am now saavy enough to ALWAYS search for a cheaper alternative. I wish more people would stop their gushing over everything. I read the comments to look for people's actual experience using the product but most are just cheerleaders who must have unlimited funds to spring for everything new thing.

@@WendyColeArt unfortunately the RU-vid model has turned us into the Avon sellers of the craft world. Stamping up had this business model as well and I hate it. I refuse to buy anything from them. I got sucked into it on my channel, promoting things and I was miserable. Now I don’t do haul videos for the most part. Unless I find something amazing or good value I don’t want to feed the monster. It is techniques and skills that make a good crafter, not products.

I have the Gemini Jr and was not happy with how easily the plates warped. Last year I purchased Anna Griffins Mini Empress die cutting machine and it is now my go to! Lightweight and small fits perfectly in my space and takes care of any of my dies that are 4 x 6 or less and best and after almost a years worth of use that plates haven’t warped!

I’m glad we are all different and judge what is best for our budgets. I never will buy a MISTI product at first due to the cost then the lawsuit with Tim Holtz/Tonic. I treated myself to Tim’s platform when he had to remove it from the USA market since the regular one dropped to $25 and the travel one to $12. I was an exacto knife gal for years. I eventually received a Fiskars rotary cutter for 12x12 paper and 4 yrs ago purchased a guillotine cutter. I’ve purchased about 15 Distress Oxide inks but will never own the entire set more because of craft room space. I really like mini pads. I like Distress mini ink pads since I can stamp, blend and watercolor with them plus easy to travel with them. Alcohol markers I thought I’d start to use. I decided to try a few colors from various brands. I don’t notice much difference in their blending capabilities. Personally I rather watercolor my projects and blending colors u just need to add more water for lighter shades. I like many steel ruled dies but they are not compatible with a Gemini so Sizzix is my choice. I was able to get Tim Holtz Vagabond a few yrs back when on sale for only $100, including shipping. I rarely pay full price for anything to do with my crafting. One thing I do feel was a game changer is the Tim Holtz glass mat and since buying that, i fractured my back and have increased pain sitting long intervals so I bought a glass top remote controlled adjustable height desk so I can sit or stand and play. We each make decisions as to what is important to us and what is “worth it”. Thanks for your opinions.

It was the way the owner of the company was attacking other people using not using a MISTI that put me off her (nasty comments under their videos). I bought a Tim Holtz platform from the US At the time, luckily I live in AUS so I can still easily purchase one if I need to. I'd love the mini but prices are high here 😂

Dang, I guess I’m a different brand of customer. If the product works but the owner is an a-hole, I’m still going to use what works...lol

I am totally with you on the stamp platform issue. I have the Tim Holtz platform and I LOVE IT ! I would never purchase a misti due to the tactics used by the owner. Plus I think the Tim Holtz version is a superior product. I predominantly use watercolors as well.. I can get a vast range of effects with only a few tubes or pans of watercolors. That said.. inks are fun and have their place in my craft room. Like you, I don't need ALL the colors.. just a few do nicely. Currently I still use an exacto to cut my papers and cardstock. I have not found a cutter that gives a perfect 90 degree angle no matter how carefully placed .. Every one is different tho.. this is just what works for me.. : )

Patti King I'm with you. I actually own 2 Misti's and the Tim Holtz version. I think each has its virtues. I leave politics and negativity out of my crafting. It's my personal mind therapy time and I don't want to be thinking about other peoples problems. IMHO😊

I gave my Copics away. I found them very hard to work with. I love my Pitt Big Brush Pens because they have almost zero bleed, they don't those weird alcohol effects like halos, and they are far more affordable. Unfortunately, Pitts are India ink so the colors are limited. I didn't like most of the Distress Oxide effects but I was waiting for the prices to go down when I found make-up blending brushes which have made me fall in love with my Distress Ink Pads all over again.

I hated Coptic markers! I even took a class on how to use them and still hated them! I didn’t realized that we were using the chisel tip markers and they now have the brush tip markers. As I watch Jennifer Maguire and Christina Warner’s videos they are using the brush-tip markers and they blend so much better. I lost my job due to Covid, but once I start working again I am going to look into getting the Spectrum Noir markers with the brush tips. The blending is indeed a game changer.

I bought a Gemini Jr. last week at Hobby Lobby. They have the best price by far. I also have a Cuttlebug, but it's impossible to find "b" plates for it, unless you buy overseas...which is no longer an option for me. I do like the Gemini as you can mass produce if you're making invitations or holiday cards. I also agree with you about Distress oxide ink. I am adding to my collection as I find them on sale. I love to use them for so many projects! I've found the make up style blending brushes at my local Dollar Tree.

Hi Rebecca, I am so happy I took the time to listen, and subscribe; I am a Poet and Entrepreneur and I love to give my poetry in handmade cards. I have wanted to add a Card Component to my business model, so I am heavy into research mode. I have been following a few (way too many) card makers, to get to know basic techniques. And to find the best supplies for a novice who has never made an album, journal, or scrapbook. I will invest today in some of the tools you featured, and save for others. Thank you for sharing your likes. I found this information very helpful. And I have viewed some of your other tutorials and I like your energy. It's real genuine but mostly I like your demeanor in the way you respond to your commenters. The best tip for me today was the Gemini Jr. Thank you for an honest assessment of the products. I

I have a Cut N Boss large die cutting machine and love it. After 3 years of die cutting still no warped plates. Tried 2 different large Gemini's and the plates warped so bad in less than 30 days that I returned them. Never tried Colic markers but I do have Chameleon markers also refillable with replacement nibs. I also use the Tim Holtz Tonic trimmer, We R Memory keepers all in one and have a Cutterpillar which will cut through cardboard boxes. boxesI also have a Eureka 101 by Toni Darroch which will stamp bigger than 8 x 8 for about $65.00. All worth the money. Makes working in your craft room so much easier!!

Yes! I'd rather spend more on a quality product that lasts than save money and end up having to replace it too soon! That big Fiskars trimmer is a beast. It can even cut through thin chipboard. TFS. Copics are incredible...a worthwhile investment. The blending solution, in my experience, is rather mis-named. I think it kind of makes a mess. It's great for cleaning up the marker barrels, though, since they tend to become sticky from the alcohol ink build-up.

I have a large Gemini, and I like it, but I really love my Anna Griffin Empress machine. It has easier sandwiches and the embossing matt is indestructible. The Gemini matt cuts to easy, plus the magnetic matt you can not cut on. You can cut die face down on the Empress magnetic matt. It really saves the cutting plates. Plus the machine is so much quieter. The drawback is the smaller size of the Empress.

Good to know about the Gemini. Years ago I bought one of the early Cricuts and found it frustrating to have to push a bunch of buttons and change cartridges each time. I ended up giving it away, and went back to my Big Kick. As my arthritis has progressed with subsequent loss of strength, I found myself using it less and less in recent years. If I get back into crafting, I might consider it. I think we all have gone through trimmers - at one time I had six. In the mid 90’s I bought a guillotine cutter at a stationary store. It will accommodate 12x12 paper - I always go back to it. Best purchase I ever made! I like the Tim Holtz one for its portability - easy to have near the workspace. That’s been on my radar for a while.
@RebeccaKeppel
@RebeccaKeppel 4 года назад
I think I had one of those first cricuts too! I hated all the cartridges and years later I ended up getting a silhouette (another big purchase that has been 100% worth it). If you have a bunch of metal dies, then I would definitely highly recommend the Gemini Jr especially for a crafter with arthritis. Makes the whole die cutting thing so much easier! I love those big purchases, like your trimmer, that you keep for years and are totally worth it! As far as the Tim Holtz one, I agree it's main selling point is that it's small and light and can be on your desk while your crafting.
@patcyzauskas7216

Elsa Cisneros. For your arthritis consider a Tim Holtz Vagabond. I bought mine last year. Just push the button and dies go thru machine. Keep an eye on JoAnns.com. I even got mine when shipping was free. You would definitely want a place in craft room where it can live since it weighs about 17 pounds. Sizzix now has another model with motor that isn’t brown. But I don’t care about the color. Cost was more important to me so it didn’t kill my budget.

Excellent advice! I have a different stamp positioning tool but I love it! And the little grid is such a blessing when it comes to getting something straight. I love my Gemini Junior and plan at some point to get the big one. I got one from HSN so it came with all the pads and metal shims Etc. But if they don't now I do agree those are well worth it. I did have the big one, it that was the first one I bought when they were first released but then life happened I needed money in so I sold it. I will get it again. I do want to get the Misty corners. Love my distress oxides and I'm with you pick your favorite colors. I bought one set and I ended up with colors that I really didn't care so much for. But I had full set syndrome at the time and then I realized that's silly just get the ones I like. I have a small and too large Guillotine cutters and they're fantastic. I do need one that can cut out the middle of something so I think I need a slide rule trimmer. I have one in storage but that's not helping me now LOL I love the little wooden shelf that you've got your copics in. And I'm not certain but I think they did away with the big 200ml bottle of colorless blender fluid. Right now my crafting space is about 2 foot square with a few shelves in a closet in a couple of carts for supplies. But over the years I have accumulated quite a bit. A lot of it is still in storage and I've had to replace them things that are in storage just so I'd have something to use. But hopefully one day I'll be able to set up an actual Craft Space again. Thank you so much for sharing...I just discovered your channel, but will check your other videos. I am somewhat new to die cutting and paper crafting but not to other crafting types. I too love my Gemini (I have the large one) and the Tim Holtz cutter and inks. Sad to say, when I was trying to get my first “round of supplies” I knew nothing about stamping. I went to the Misti site as it was way out of my budget and I needed further information. It must have been just as all the “stuff” was raging. I had never read such nasty words from a crafter to or about other crafters and decided if that was what it was all about, stamping would never be for me. Everywhere I had gone prior to that (crafters blogs, RU-vids videos, etc.) were such nice, sharing and giving folk I was so shocked to see what was written there! That was years ago, I have never gone back and I have never used stamps although I have a drawer of stamps that have never been touched. You and others like you renewed my faith in the generosity of crafters as the years have passed. I am glad that my personal encounter with the “Misti” site did not stop me from crafting altogether. Maybe someday I will try stamping. Arthritis prevents me from using stamping blocks. If you have any information on what glues to use for what, it would be greatly appreciated. I can’t begin to list the glues I have used in the wrong way only to have my cards (that’s what I do most) fall apart. For example: what glue for acetate, vellum, mirror-coated paper, chipboard, etc. Any help would be a blessing. Signing up as new stubbie.

I use Elizabeth Crafts double sided tape (or scrapbookingmade but it never goes on sale) from JoAnns.com (not sold in stores). Once it’s down, it’s down for good, no wiggling with placement. Tim Holtz glossy accents or multi medium matte are very good glues for paper to cardboard or wood. IKEA used to sell a picture frame that hinged to open up and place photo inside. Don’t know if they still do but I’m sure some company must. You can use that as your stamping platform. Do a search here on RU-vid for how to make your own. I often will place stamp onto my Sizzix cutting board, ink the stamp and them place the paper on top and massage the paper. Try it. It’s only paper. Try a Darice (they are going out of business) rubber stamp pad to get better results with stamping. I hope u find something that will help u to start stamping. It’s so pleasurable.

I agree with you about everything you mentioned. Alcohol markers are a game changer. Unfortunately, I couldn't do the price of Copics. I chose the Spectrum Noir Next Generation pens and added to my collection with the Illustrator pens which also have a brush marker. My problem with my big Gemini has to do with the plates. They warp so quickly no matter how much I rotate the plates that I've actually caught myself bringing out my old Cricut Cuddlebug to keep from fiddling with the Gemini and ruining the plates. Is that silly, or what? I've heard that the new magnetic mat grows over time. Jennifer McGuire has a hack to keep her plates from warping, but I've not had the courage to try it. First rate video. Have you tried the new "make-up brushes"? You can get them in sets with white bristles or colored handles so that you don't have to wash them every time you use them. Just keep one brush for every color family. But, you get such gorgeous results with your foam applicators that I can't see you needing them. Thank you for the informative video.

Thanks for referring me from a more recent video of yours! I've been ok with a Fiskars trimmer (long but NOT rotary) for a few years but now that I've graduated to 110# cardstock even new blades seem to create inferior cut. Choices are: get the 12" Tim Holtz guillotine OR get the 8.5" BECAUSE it has 1/4" markings (reviewers often point that out and seem to think more of that 8.5 version.)That option of course means using the old Fiskars for 12" cardstock for now, and getting the 110" card stock only in 8.5 x 11." Option 2: Get the 12" Tim Holtz guillotine and mark my own 1/4" markings. Opinion since you clearly had similar choices?
@RebeccaKeppel
@RebeccaKeppel 3 года назад
Hmmmmm that's a tough one. Do you have room on your desk for the 12"? I like the smaller one because I can keep it in a drawer with the BIG procision fiskars trimmer but it can sit out on my desk while working. The big fiskars I have can actually cut through thin chipboard so I use that for the heavier cardstock and cutting vertically an 8.5 x 11 cardstock.

I bought a $15 stamping platform and the mini MISTI ($170) and I can't tell the difference. I'm sure though that a Gemini Jr will be way different to hand-cranking with my Cuttlebug ;)

Does the Gemini work with the Tim Holtz bigz dies? New subscriber and look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thanks so much for stopping by, watching and subscribing! Unfortunately as far as I am aware, the Gemini Jr does not work with the Bigz dies only all thin metal dies and any embossing folders.

Wow! Thanks for this!! I'm new to cardmaking and needed this information. I just finally broke down and bought a set of Copic markers. It was good to see that you said they were worth the money. I feel validated now!! LOL! However, I decided to fork out the extra $$$ and change out the chisel tips for a fine point (bullet?) tip on all of them. (Michael's had them on sale!) I didn't think I'd use the chisel tip much for making cards, either. I like being able to color in tiny spaces like eyes, plant stems, lips, etc. What do you think of that idea? I haven't done it yet, so I can change this plan if it's not a good idea! Thanks!

Oh I totally agree it is a great idea! I have tried out a few other companies markers with bullet tips and for ME I really like them! As a beginner I find blending with the bullet tip is a lot easier! Enjoy your Copics!

Just watching your video for the first time - question regarding The Misty - everything shown in the showing of The Misty - does it come with it or do you have to purchase them separately and in another video you talked about the nail polish holder for inks, this is do on my to get list on Amazon 🤗🤗- oh and enjoy your videos so I just subscribed to enjoy more of your videos- have a great day🥰

The MISTI that is now available comes with bar magnets, but if you want the mousepad (rather than using paper inside) you have to purchase that separately. I think I also showed the MISTI corners? Those are a separate purchase as well. Yes, those nail polish holders are an affordable way to organize a ton of different items in my craft space! I think I am up to 6 now lol! Thanks so much for stopping by, watching and subscribing!

Would love to have a Gemini jr. But I think it's a want more than a need because everyone seems to have one. I can't justify the cost & will just have to stick with my old handcrank spellbinders machine. It's also like the foiling machines....love the look they give to cards, but don't have one of those either because of the cost.

I felt the same about foiling but then I saw I could get a laminator on sale for $22 Canadian on Amazon. You do need to make sure you have the right foil but that hasn’t been a problem for me. You could also buy the deco foil transfer gel duo if you don’t want a laminator. Hope this helps!

If you like the hot foil machines check out the Couture creations GoPress and foil. It's significantly cheaper than other brands :) Also the laminator thing with ronernink printed stuff is great too!

Great review. I have both the Tonic trimmer & the earlier Fiskar trimmer with the wire guide. I avoid using it unless absolutely necessary since the replacement blades don’t last all that long & end up being pricey because of it. Does the newer trimmer you have also suffer from this issue? Thanks
@RebeccaKeppel
@RebeccaKeppel 4 года назад
Aaaah I should've mentioned this in the video! The Fiskars trimmer is a self sharpening blade!! I've had it for years and it is still as sharp as the day I bought it!

Rebecca Keppel Thank you! I’d heard the newer version was self sharpening, however, it’s good to hear from a real life user 💕. I know you from Waffle Flower, nice to have found your own channel. Stay safe!

Why can we no longer buy the transparency grid? That would be so useful.
