I'm from Vancouver. It's where I live now. But I've lived in both cities for long stretches of time. There's no doubt Vancouver has better natural attributes, and milder weather in both summer and winter. You get a lot of mostly rain in the winter months, and usually pleasant temperatures in summer, with generally low humidity. Toronto's weather is more extreme. Snowy, cold winter weather and very hot and humid summer weather. The cost of living is likely very similar, but Vancouver is probably slightly more expensive for food and accommodation. There is a severe lack of affordable housing in both cities, tho I haven't lived in Toronto for some time, so I'm only reporting what I've heard. Overall I prefer Vancouver, but Toronto had some things that I thought were ok. But both places are far from perfect.

Vancouver is no.1 I grew up in Toronto and lived in Toronto for 25 years before taking a trip here in Expo 86, I loved it so much, and then returned to Toronto. I kept thinking oh my I got to get out of this crappy cold weather city and super scorching hot summers, so in 1989 I decided to move to Vancouver and gave never looked back it's was the best decision I have ever made, I have been living here for 30 years and still love it even though the population has increased it is no where near as bad as Toronto because the population is only about 1/3 of Toronto, so not over crowded

Yeah, I don't think so. I'd often go outside at night time in Olympic Village/Yaletown (the "nicer" neighbourhoods in town, where I used to live) and there would be druggies/homeless people roaming around and severely unstable. I'd also see blue used needles on the ground. Not really "suitable" for living if you can't even feel safe. Take one stroll down East Hastings & Oppenheimer and you'll go running back to Toronto, which is exactly what I did.

One tiny correction. The Seabus is part of the transit system and only goes across the harbour from Downtown to North Vancouver. The ferries that go to the islands off the coast are BC Ferries. Seabus is only foot passengers and a 10 minute trip, BC Ferries also take vehicles, and have full service restaurants etc.

What’s fascinating is I moved to UK 🇬🇧 in the 1980s. Back then, nobody heard of Vancouver (until Princess Diana fainted at the Expo’86). Now to hear people say, “...Canada’s two most famous cities, Toronto & Vancouver” is incredible. Traditionally it used to always be only Montréal everyone knew around the world (a legacy of EXPO’67 & 1976 Summer Olympics?) I love Vancouver, but the choice, for me, would include Montréal. Generally Toronto & Calgary as major financial & corporate HQs are more the choices most people are presented with based on careers. (Toronto = Canadian/North American HQ hub, while Calgary = western Canadian HQ hub) Calgary should be part of the analysis as it is cheaper than the bigger three, and offers a substantial high quality “quintessentially canadian” lifestyle ... especially with its proximity to the famous Canadian Rockies.

Yeah but then summer in Toronto is obscenely humid and hot, whereas summer in Vancouver is the perfect amount of heat and dry. Like the humidity makes walking around so uncomfortable and you'd rather just be in air conditioning. And Vancouver spring arrives in march, but in Toronto it can snow all the way through April. Usually 3rd week of April in TO temperature breaks above 10C. Vancouver that happens 2nd week of march.

@@eric1107 that's not true. The weather temperatures are accurate. This is data of a long history gathered together to create average temperatures. However while temperatures in Toronto can rise and reach above seasonal of say +5c high and a low of -2c for example, but they can be just as likely to also have day with lower then average of say high -7c & low -14c. A week in January with a cold snap with temperatures reaching -9c/-16c would be a normal colder week. Also a week of warm snap could occur causing +7c/0c just as likely. This year saw a early start to winter with below average temperatures in November but above average temperatures in months of December, well above in January and above February and March average temperatures, only to see below average temperatures in the months of April and into start of May. This years January was one of the warmest on record. With temperatures reaching as high as +12c on January 11th. But also dropped as cold as -15c on January 17th. 28 of the 31 days this year in January fell above the average temperatures in January. Well above normal. December saw temperatures reach as high as +11c on December 27th, but also a low temperature of -14c on December 19th. Low of -11c on November 13th. High +11c on November 22nd. February saw temperatures as low as -18c on February 14th with a high of +8c on February 24th.

If you like nature and natural beauty of course, Vancouver is your choice but if you love big cities with a lively street vibe and the eccentric side of life, Toronto wins out, although, Montreal also has a great street vibe too. There is so much more urban life/action in Toronto but it is Canada's biggest and fastest growing city, so no surprise there. Toronto also wins out in entertainment and huge events, festivals, conventions and culture.

Big difference is Vancouver is on the Pacific Ocean and Toronto is not bordering an ocean. Both cities are not very far from the US border. As a Canadian born here I feel that Toronto feels much more like a part of the US and Vancouver feels more Canadian to me. Vancouver is much much much smaller feeling. The summer in Vancouver is not tropical hot. The summer in Ontario is much hotter. The winter in Vancouver is very mild. Vancouver is very damp. Ontario is drier. The only knock against Vancouver is the lack of cultural offerings. There's no MLB, no NBA, no major tennis tournaments, golf events, auto races, less nightlife, less performing arts, and a shocking absence of notable museums, and galleries,. I suppose Vancouver will acquire these things bit by bit as it gets bigger but it's currently a major negative for me.

After living in Vancouver for almost two years now, my partner and I are heading back to Toronto. It seems like no one here talks about the homeless/drug crisis here. East Hastings Street and Oppenheimer Park were deal breakers for me. Vancouver is aesthetically beautiful, but there is a real dark side here that the locals seem to push under the rug.

@@frankihatch So with that logic of yours that's like saying Somalia is hands down better than Toronto. Just because you had the "best times" of your life in a certain place doesn't automatically mean it deserves the title. I know you (and many other Vancouverites) are in denial, but I'm actually looking at Vancouver vs Toronto from an objective stance since I lived in both cities. Vancouver hands down has a homeless PANDEMIC. Because Vancouver is so small, whether you're on one side of the city or the other, it's a good chance you'll see junkies, homelessness, and/or petty theft going on. That itself overrides the "aesthetic beauty" of Vancouver because what kind of life is it knowing that you'll always wake up to one of these issues I mentioned above? This is why Toronto will always be home to me.

I'm an American who moved here 10 years ago. I live in British Columbia and I find people here are closed off, very old school, incompetent, even bratty (feeling entitled). Customer service is below par. Lazy even too rigid they hate dealing with customer issues or complaints - they don't like it whenever they have to deal with a situation that requires an extra step. On the other hand I've met some folks from Toronto and based in my experience they are more relevant, practical, grounded, upbeat and down to earth people.

TORONTO. Invest in property, condos and such. Rent them out, pays your mortgage and some. In 20 years 4 of my Toronto condos will be mortgage free, while I didn’t have contribute any monthly payments. And the value will always be more then Vancouver, meaning a condo in downtown Toronto vs Vancouver, you’ll make a bigger bank in Toronto. But if not looking to invest then it shouldn’t really matter. Theres more money in Toronto. But this is just my theory and experience.

Your section on "Population" should say "European Canadians" instead of "Canadians", as the rest are also Canadians but identify as having an ethnic background other than European. Similarly, when you write "immigrants", you give the impression that 46% of the population strolling around Toronto just got off the boat/plane 5 years ago. This is simply not true. A large portion of those, Chinese, South Asian and Filipino "immigrants" you mention, are first, second and even third generation Canadians. People need to clearly understand this very important difference.
