Got any other tips? Or any idea how the "just add water" heating mechanism works? If you want to trade, tuna and barbecue sauce basically tastes like pulled pork but slightly bad, and tortillas with peanut butter are a fucking godsend. And on top of that, if you take out all of the "chocolate" M&Ms in trail mix, put them in a bag, and put it out in the hot summer sun after crushing the M&Ms, you got yourself a really scuffed chocolate bar. Assuming you had trail mix with M&Ms, of course

Those Russian bricks are good stuff. No, not good as in delicious or pleasant to eat. They're absolutely HORRIBLE to eat and you'll hate them. But for actual emergencies and survival situations they're perfectly engineered. They and similar products from other countries are the densest and lightest self-stable form of calories and nutrients you can have. If you could only bring a limited amount of weight or volume with you somewhere for emergency supplies, those are the best for both. It's really unhealthy to eat them for weeks or months, but they'll keep you ALIVE longer than anything else their weight or size. You can survive without starving with about 220 grams per day if you have a source of water. You'll be hungry as hell but alive.

Russian MREs are pretty good to be completely fair , their canned meat recipes are real meat and of quality IMHO. This video is a mixed bag of feelings for me , too much playing around with the food and too little eating. That Russian ration bar at the end is a marine emergency ration. You can also get them in English, made in the USA. Search for "Datrex white ration DX2400F." The translation is more than a little mangled, but the gist is that it's an ultra-compact, ultra-stable brick of calories. They provide essentially no nutritional value, only calories. Hence the warning (?) of "accept food at strong feeling of famine." The intent is that you're supposed to save those for when you've run out of everything else, because without useful vitamins and minerals like C, B12, iron, you'll start feeling pretty terrible pretty quick. But you need calories to move, so better to suffer through half a dozen vitamin deficiencies than starve to death. Also, fairly obvious plug, but Steve1989MREInfo does taste tests and reviews of all sorts of rations, including a bunch of international ones. The French, Italian, and Czech ones were very well received, the Chinese rations were pretty damn terrible.

You heathens. 1) the gas in the MRE heater is flammable, use the matches to have fun. B) you need to heat up the mre cheese with the heater as well, so you don't get yellow spackle. 4) murphy is eating combos while making a DIY Combo of the cheese paste and crackers. Good video guys. But seriously try the above mentioned stuff.

I didn't tell you guys to do this, but if you crush the heater up from an MRE, and seal it in a 20 oz mtn dew bottle (empty) and then pour a little water in and seal it, and give it a good shake and throw it, it'll detonate and turn the bottle into something resembling an ashtray (most of the time)

You might be interested to know that the flameless ration heaters actually do generate hydrogen gas - this is why they are not allowed to be used on aircraft: Imagine a bunch of soldiers on a plane, each with their FRH cooking away and releasing hydrogen into the cabin. The lower explosive limit for hydrogen mixed with air is only 5%, which could easily be reached in a sealed cabin if enough rations were being cooked with the FRH pouches at the same time. The chemistry involved is deceptively simple: The FRH has a porous cloth bag containing some metal granules and some salt. The metal granules are an alloy of mostly magnesium with a few percent of iron. When you soak the bag with water, the salt dissolves to make a conductive electrolyte, which allows the metal to start reacting with the water. Each little alloy granule essentially becomes a short-circuited electrochemical cell, the net reaction being magnesium + water -----> magnesium hydroxide + hydrogen, which produces a LOT of heat in the process. The iron left over will eventually turn to rust as well, but that is a much slower reaction.

The Swiss Army literally just gives you a tin of chili con carne, a pack of hardtack-like bisquits and (if you're a lucky private or an NCO/officer) a small chunk of chocolate (which contains quite a bit of caffeine, but is pretty rare. I'm a sergeant and I've only rarely received an actual chocolate bar). But usually, we don't fuck around with MREs, we just have a mobile kitchen (or you're lucky and are stationary, like on an air base. Like me. I like being in the Air Force)

A couple of things to mention: Firstly, most of us have a knife or multitool we could use if we struggled as much as you two with MREs; if not, 10 weeks of basic with even more time of advanced training where we weren't allowed knives during any of it taught us well how to open them with bare hands. You're supposed to use the cardboard sleeve to hold the heating unit and food pack together so you don't have to grab it out of a bag full of boiling water :/ Nobody ever really cares that much about going between the lines on the heater either - that is, if we even bother to use it. Some items, like the Maple Flavored Sausage Patty, REQUIRE heating to be edible (the maple coating and grease are both coagulated and disgusting otherwise). Others, it doesn't matter that much. I can't really think of anything right now that's better without being heated; unless it's summer, which would be just about anything. Finally, those First Strike bars were treated like solid gold during my time in basic training; you don't comprehend just what you mock ; - ;"

Well, you didn't not get Russian MRE, you got that emergency famine brick. MRE is designed to efficiently pack things your soldiers will feel like at home eating, so their morale and patriotism is high, and while they do have to live for quite long, the emergency brick is supposed to live forever, it tastes bad because of that, but also if it was good, you would likely eat the whole thing in one sitting, which is bad at famine times. They are also very space efficient, you just put some silos across the country, and you have emergency supply of food for months

I really do hope this becomes a series. Probably a summary, truncated series, because numerous channels have made months of content out of the range of MREs available, and keep going - but I'm really curious to figure out what Brian thinks has a TWISTY flavor and what doesn't. (For budget: Lithuanian, at least before 2020. Cheap and not bad at all, though Jason may shy away from certain bits.) I'd love to see some Japanese and 24-hour Russian packs too (go for the шпик - unheated if you dare!).
