With series 1 of my podcast 'Exterminating Doctor Who' at an end, it seemed the right time to get my ranking of Doctors 1-13 on the record. Some of these have switched placements several times over the years, but others have kept their firm position in the surprising list...

I literally quit watching the show during Capaldi's second year (jumping back in for Whittaker's first two years before dropping out again), and while that had a lot to do with the approach the show was taking, something that went back to Smith's tenure and represented an accumulation of discontentment on my part, Capaldi's depiction of the Doctor never clicked with me. I don't see what the fuss is about, and he's one of only four Doctors I'd say I don't particularly care for.

Peter capaldii as the doctor is the Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes type of performance. As time goes on it gets better and better. Victory feels earned, rather than just "I'm the doctor" *waves sonic screwdriver*. Great ability to both command a room and share a stage, while also bouncing very well off basically every character he interacts with. Incredibly underrated doctor

I think that people often look at the handful of supposedly REALLY BAD episodes in Capaldi’s era like Kill the Moon, Sleep No More, The Eaters of Light etc. (I think those episodes they’re just average) and say that his whole era was like that.

Exactly...every doctor who era had a few duds, Capaldi’s is just hated cus it’s different...he doesn’t have the more human nature of Ten, or the overarching series arcs of Matt, and this turned many off...but they missed the point, his era was always abt the character of the doctor and he had the best character arc!

Yep I agree, Even though Tom was 'my' Doctor, Capaldi was superb in the role. Unfortunately the Beeb thought otherwise and imo his tenure suffered because of it and I will always hold that against them. It also helps that Capaldi is big Who fan (we both contributed to the same Who fanzine back in the day would you believe) and so he genuinely loves this show and It shows in his performances. When Big Finish is taken into account, the Sixth and Eighth Doctors are the best of the classic era in my opinion. Allowing Colin Baker to play the Doctor the way he wanted and giving him good material gets him to shine. Giving Paul McGann some more adventures really shows his versatility as an actor since he is able to play the romantic, whacky scientist, space hobo, and cold sides of the Doctor with effortless ease.

Pat Troughton is the best Doctor of Classic Who and most certainly of whole Doctor Who. It is a shame that so much of his great acting is missing, probably forever. Ans Chris Eccleston is the one who does best in showing his mood changes within a second, from playfully childish to bitterly serious. Thus, Eccleston is the best Doctor of Modern Who, unfortunately having only one season.
@STNeish
@STNeish Год назад
I feel that Troughton was the best Doctor, in large part because he was the one who made the character what we saw from then on. Hartnell's Doctor was very different, being somewhat less curious, heroic and affable. Troughton set the stage for all that followed him. Of course, he also inhabited the role better than any other actor, with the possible exception of Tom Baker.

@@AidanGulaMedia I mean both in a line. Gave a really strong context to the entire story and laid the foundation for the hybrid concept and the lie of the time Lords. But the 13th doctors final episode kind of ruined it. It wasn't even jodie's fault in this context. The story itself should have been written in such a way that this would be disclosed at the weakest point of the doctor and all they did was hang her in a bunch of circles sitting and hearing a story and even after that all it took was just a so called mind blast along with writing a situation in the story where they showed her slightly cowardly to the point an old man blows himself up. And all of this just to end up with her being in a prison. Like come on.

Peter Capaldi is brilliant and I am thrilled you put him first. Young teenage girls didn't like him because they wanted to keep the youthful eye candy of the previous two incarnations. Capaldi's acting is sublime and he is so unique from the others. He cared more than any before despite what people say. Everything that makes Capaldi brilliant is what is lacking in Whittaker's characterisation. He has such sincerity, is so authentic and not a caricature. He had both beauty (not romantic but the real thing) and power in his personality without the arrogance that other carnations sometimes overindulged in. His speeches were delivered with such ferocity and passion that you can't imagine many of the other incarnations coming close. As you stated Capaldi was so brilliant he could even make crap scripts watchable. With Bill and Nardole we had a Tardis team equal in liking to Sarah, Harry and Tom. in his season nine the compassion he showed for Clara (who I know many didn't like, but I thought she was a delight) was incredibly moving. What I loved most was between these two characters is that they portrayed what genuine love in it's purest state is. It is caring about the other so far much more than yourself. It is a notion that is not easy to convey on a television show and there is a danger it will come across as weird, even inappropriate. However the two leads pulled it off beautifully. They showed that substantial lows, if overcome can only lead to a stronger connection and that really is what I mean by the word 'love' in this posting. it is a powerful connection, an understanding and value for someone you care about deeply. Capaldi brought such an abundance of emotions to the screen. His final episodes he really shone. For those who did not like this incarnation i would recommend you give him a second try. I think if I had to choose one word to subscribe Capaldi's Doctor is 'depth'. A depth of every emotion yet could also could be lighthearted, But no other actor has been able to pull off the depth of the character better than Capaldi. At the middle age of 51 years and he will always be my favourite Doctor.

Actually finally seeing someone have legit criticism for Jodie's doctor is something I appreciate very much instead of the usual overdramatic answers people give. Anyway, my favorite is McCoy due to his manipulative persona and he has some of the best stories in books also I disagree I think he is dark in season 25 too the clip you showed from the greatest show in the galaxy(one of my favorite stories) is not like that to be childish but mostly to show the the doctor not winning the higher-ups(the audience and the BBC higher-ups in this case) with his iold tricks and then trying something new and they would still not be pleased but in the end he survives anyway the same way the show managed to survive for another season during it's worst time and how it managed to go on even in the wilderness years and then it got revived.

For Me born in the 70s there's only Tom baker Christopher eccleston and David Tennant that have a mix of warmth and power that make a human being watching feel safe. I preferred Kimba the white lion as a child, my brother and my mum who agrees with with me, she's 73 so she's pretty much over the years seen them as part of her life since the first doctor, oh and she had a massive crush on Paul magann* I loved John hurt as the doctor, straight away you look into his eyes and want to know him. But I stand by my 3 choices David Tennant for me as feeling safe when he was there, oh and Tom baker getting my attention as a child because he was funny and nice, Christopher eccelston for being so powerful and sweet. For my mum it's the first Doctor then Christopher eccelston Paul magann then the others. But for my grandchildren, they started watching David Tennant with me, but they loved Matt Smith, and now no one even thinks about it, which is pretty sad considering how long it's been in my mums life my life, it's not recognisable anymore, not to us. I'd like to know how English kids feel about doctor who. But I'll always thank the UK for introducing us to Doctor who 💞💞💞💞 Christopher Eccelston didn't want to keep playing the doctor 😒🥀🕯.

You're mistaken. It was McGann's Doctor that chose to become the War Doctor. Hurt's Doctor was _made_ to be the War Doctor. He wasn't a regeneration that happened to choose to give in to the temptation to fight. He didn't have a choice. McGann's Doctor was in the unusual position of being able to choose how his next regeneration would go and he chose a warrior.

I totally agree, Capaldi has always been my favourite Doctor, but I personally love Sylvester McCoy, not sure who hasn't been praising his audio dramas, but I've always found people rate them higher than his run on TV. Take a look at The Architects of History, A Death in the Family, UNIT Dominion, The Enemy of the Daleks, The Fearmonger, The Two Masters and the utterly phenomenal 'Master'. These audio dramas know what makes McCoy great, it's his cunning, Machiavellian, borderline evil nature.

My opinion obviously love to here if u agree or disagree and love to know why 🙂

Matt Smith, 7.William Hartnell 8. David Tannent, WAY to overrated, way to human 9. Jon Pertwee 10. Jo Martin She clicks almost on the spot, thats the Doctor no doubt! I hate the Tmeles Child BS, but her Doctor is awesome. 11. Patrick T. havent seen much of him, maybe higher next time. You can flip this and 12...not sure yet. 12. Jodie Withaker Again, she is not bad! But she never clicks, hope she gets Audios too to show her potential with people who CARE about the show and give her propper material to work with 13. Peter Davison....he doesnt click for me, mostly because there is no good chemestry with companions, most of them are annoying tbh.

I’ve only watched Modern Who and here’s my ranking and reasonings. I’ll start from worst and end with the best 13: Whittaker does improve overall, but my god is she incredibly weak in her role. Not much to say otherwise 10: Yeah this might be an unpopular Opinion but tbh the gap between 13 and everyone else is massive but that doesn’t mean 10 doesn’t have problems. I love his run, and Series 4 is spectacular. But if you were to boil him down to a single sentence here’s what it could be: “Boy do I love having Rose with me and I’m so sad and upset that I can’t get over the feeling because I’m constantly missing her” Like, everything else is great, but the Romance has got to go 11: I put 11 above 10 just cause he doesn’t do romance except with Clara. But even then it’s handled WAY better than 10 and Rose. 11 is fun, awkward, quirky, and he has a lot of heart. He is the shining star in his sort of messy run. 9: One series, one run. 9 is absolutely Fantastic and RTD knocked it out of the park. He is mostly higher than 11 just cause 11 has minor flaws but tbh Eccleston to me does so much with how little he had. I love him and wished we had more. 12: Is it even a competition? (Yes it is but come on we all agree Capaldi is THE DOCTOR) Edit: I forgot to mention River exists so… there’s that for 11. Their chemistry is a bit overrated but it just works just because they’re husband and wife. It still makes my point valid as outside of his own wife, he only really has chemistry with Clara. So his ranking doesn’t change

realistically 7 and 8 are by miles the "darkest" incarnations in large part because they are by miles the most complicated yet well fleshed out characters out of them. Granted this is largely down to their 90s/00s material but 7 was fully formed in season 25 (yeah not sure why this guy thought the "darker" version only started in Battlefield but hey) and y'know the vast majority of 8 is outside of the TV show (which, being pedantic, actually means the TVM and the modern series since they aren't the same show, they are different productions). I also don't agree at all with the "new who character development driven classic who adventure of the week" thing, that's more just the 70s/early-mid80s seasons. There are two very different versions of Doctor Who, the version new who is based on (the 4th Doctor era is the best example, it's adventure based and pushes the whole 'quirky' thing and so on) and then there's 60s Who and the McCoy-McGann eras (obviously with McGann this is down to the books and novels). That version places far more emphasis on being lost in space and time, the vastness and the weirdness of the unknown around them. It has more of an emphasis on the horror elements and it does have relatively character driven plots (Ian/Barbara, Seven/Ace, Susan's development, the Second Doctor and the Time Lords, etc.) as opposed to the average 4th Doctor story, but it is still about travellers lost in space - not a "lonely god" and his companions of prophecies like in New Who. And because despite being fundamentally based on 70s/early-mid80s Who, New Who is another totally different version down to it's soap elements and it's very dramatic stories and it's almost total divorcement from being lost in space being scared and lost and having a Doctor who was a danger to the companion, as opposed to the cuddly best friend or love interest. My point being, I don't think things like "13th Doctor can't command the room" or having a more romantic Doctor are really great points against or for different Doctors. To each their own and all the rest but I think rankings like this almost always "suffer" from being based on any given fan's individual perspective of what Doctor Who is or should be that isn't generally accurate to the different versions of the show that do exist. Which is why we ever got a revival of the 60s Who fundamentals with McCoy in the first place, because those making that era didn't watch 70s Who and only remembered the 60s originals. Side note, totally personal, I think the 10th Doctor era is incredibly mediocre outside of series 3 which is great.

John Hurt is the best actor who ever played the Doctor. Just look at his resume. Plus, he was able to pull off a retconned Doctor who wasn't supposed to exist during the most important milestone in Doctor Who history whilst sharing the screen with 2 of the most popular Doctors of all time AND having Tom Baker waiting in the wings. There's no way Peter Capaldi could have managed that. At best, Capaldi would have been overshadowed by David Tennant and Matt Smith and at worst he would have just been thoroughly unlikeable like he was in Season 8.

Capaldi is also my #1 to the point that for me, the final line by the Doctor of the whole franchise is "I Let You Go". There has been nothing of major interest for me in the Doctor Who series since him, and that includes the 2023 reboot stuff. But where we differ, is that I have Matt Smith as my #2, and you had him way down in your list. A lot of what I loved about Capaldi, (and Tom Baker), is also in Matt Smith in spades. Troughton as well. I like alien doctors, and particularly ones who can make me laugh and cry within seconds of each other. Plus Matt had Amy and Rory, and River who are nearly as endearing to me as some of my favorite doctors.

Mine: 13: 13 (just awful characterization) 12: 7 (bad writing really hurt this doctor) 11: 5 (he had a tough act to follow and didn't really work for me) 10: 9 (I'll get crucified for this, but I didn't love the writing in this era) 9: 1 (also crucified, but I don't think it aged well for me) 8: 8 (night of the doctor redeemed him for me) 7: 6 (I liked the attempt at darkness) 6: 3 (he was really fun, almost bond like for me) 5: 12 (I didn't love him at first, but his last season solidified it for me) 4: 10 (uneven quality but when it was great, it was great) 3: 2 (loved space hobo) 2: 4 (also loved the comedy) 1. 11 (again, I love a space hobo comedy) I don't really count the war doctor because there's not enough in the tv series to go by.

I agree. Capaldi is the best new who Doctor. However I think Tennant lacks character development as there’s nothing that shows his alien side (he is too human) compared to 12 I think he had the right balance of human and alien. Tenant is my least favourite doctor. I think 13 has had character development as the timeless child and the flux. Has given a lot of character development not the best but not the worst either. 11 is the opposite too alien and 9 almost had the right balance. I believe the doctors should all have character development and a equal balance between human and alien. 12s doctor I can relate to a lot he was the first doctor I saw. However his era also helped me through the end of school and college a lot. As I struggled a lot back then etc... I also hope he did eventually join big finish too.

It shows that Colin baker and Timothy dalton were the right actors with the right ideas just the wrong time to present them. Both Capaldi and Baker’s doctors have horrendous tastes and are grumpy but they mellow and we began to like them a lot more. As much as I do love matt Smith's doctor so dearly, I realize his series along with Moffatts writing are full of holes past Series 5. Moffat can write great stories sure, but there are many moments where Matt Smith's doctor are spoiled by Moffatts.. sometimes rather Greasy writing. Especially in the Clara years. Im however really glad you placed capaldi so high, his doctor is extremely under-rated and is possibly one of the most well trained actors that have taken the role, and succeeded with it.
