I run the 42mm version on my GT Avalanche MTB and they are great

They look nice, I ride Clément Strada LGGs 28c on my endurance bike, they have low rolling resistance thanks to the slick rubber in the center, and when you want to go off road there's thread on the sides which provide good grip. Its really the best of both worlds, I can match the speed of my pure road bike on asphalt, then if I want to I can go off-road and have plenty of grip.
I, too, am uncomfortable with the idea of equipping My gravel bike with heavy, awkward, high rolling resistance tyres. The Continental Contact -series are remarkably affordable and good-looking. I just wish they were bead-less. Have you tried to convert one to the tubeless standard? I wonder if that would work.
I've tried and they don't, Im pretty good at getting non tubeless tyres to seal too. They are just too supple and porous. I had 1 puncture in 2 years on these tyres though. An even better option is the run planet x copy of cush core for 15quid, you can run lower pressures and if you ever get a puncture you can still ride home
I'm using something similar, it looks the same, it's the continental speed city contact tyre in 35mm. I found at 70psi it was shaking my bones out my body, so I dropped the pressure down till it was a bit more comfortable, 60psi ish... but at 70 or 60 I did not feel it rolled fast at all, coming down steep hills I seemed to almost stop at the bottom 😂 I had a set of proper gravel tyres on before and I think they performed better.... I was expecting more from this tyre but maybe the version I have is for city bikes or maybe I'm doing something wrong 🤷🏻♂️
TheOracle don't forget to make a review of it and compare it with contact sport. I already subscribe to your channel and turn on notification so I will get notice if you post new videos. Thank you
Surprised to hear of the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme being faster than the Continental Sport Contact. I've no experience with the Continental, but have had a pair of Supremes on My Cannondale F1 for years; toured with it twice, etc. It was supposed to have excellent traction, while in reality it was the most slippery (not in feel, but in use) tyre I've ever had. Didn't feel particularly fast, either.
in tests on a steeldrum the supreme performs very well in rolling resistance. but i don´t like him that much for hard cornering on the road the profile on the edges opens up which you don´t want. but in light gravel he is fine and very well balanced and light to. rode the sport contact in 32mm too. real good value. better roll resistance then kojaks.
What do you think about this vs the Continental GP 5000 700 X 32 - will that be having a lesser rolling resistance ( more easier to cycle for a heavier newbie cyclist) Thanks in advance
That's just a better overall tyre in every aspect. If you wanted something that's got low rolling resistance but very good value the continental ultra 3 is a good tyre
@@MrSmoothasf thank you very much - appreciate you taking the time to reply - so the GP 5000 is certainly faster than ( or easier to pedal than) the Contact Speed 35 Right ? - Thanks
@@sathishkumar-nq1to definetly, you wouldn't feel it much but it's faster. It's been years since I made this video and there are much better tyres out now. Gravel tyres barely existed not long ago. A list of my favourite tyres I've used. Road GP4000 MAVIC YKSION PRO TUBELESS CONTINENTAL ULTRA SPORT 3 Worst road Vittoria Corsa G2 tubeless (On my bike at the moment) 50 miles, puncture, blown off the rim once, not particularly fast or comfortable. GRAVEL TYRES CONTINENTAL SPORT CONTACT 2 IN 35C Panaracer Gravelking Worst gravel tyre I hated the Panaracer Gravel King Sk though it has a massive fan base. Not particularly fast, tred pattern spits stones at your frame, lost their shape and got bulges within a month.
Hi, The Sport Contact 2 (now Contact Speed) sounds great; how does it compare to the Schwalbe Marathon Almotion? On the road they "sound" comparable; but for a small offroad/gravel detour, I wonder which outperforms. (I mostly go roads, but sometimes a gravel backroad inbetween). Anybody have insight?
Good and relevant question. I had 1 puncture with the sport Contact 2, 2 set of them. They are conciderably lighter than the marathons which I have on right now. I regret buying the marathons to be honest with you as they weight as much as a mtb tyre, I actually regretted buying them just carrying them back to the car from the shop. Unless touring/commuting daily I don't think marathons are needed, they are heavy and overkill however they roll surprisingly fast
@@MartinVran off road the continental is better at both, lighter and more comfortable. Imo those green guards sound only be used for very high mile commutes or touring. They are super heavy
@@paulb9769 no, this model of tyre is discontinued, well renamed and is a different tyre now. This video is quite old, there weren't many gravel tyres at the time. I recommend the specialized pathfinder pro out of all I've tried
Just because a tyre looks fast, it doesnt mean it is. Check out the site dedicated to testing bike tyres, some of them seem pretty decent when looking at the tread pattern but have horrendous rolling resistance. G-one speed is really fast in 60mm and it most likely is just as fast in 30. These Continentals might actually be shite and you dont even know it cause you never rode a faster tyre.
Right. Looking at the review now, at 60 psi (picked a mid pressure) they got 20.6 watts rolling resistance, Big one 2.35 which is a huge tyre has only 13.6 at 35 psi. SpeedKing is faster aswell. I wouldnt ride these Contacts when theres faster (probably pricier) tyres out there.
levta that was my whole point, at this price range I can't find anything that out performs this. I prefer continental gp4000 s2s for performance but for pound to performance these are good.
Not quite as bad as 500km but I have done about 2000km on my G-ones and now I'm getting punctures quite a lot. Rear has no tread left on the centre of the tyre, front tread ok. Both tyres have lots of cuts now. On inspection the tubeless sealant has saved me lots of times. Was looking at the sport contact 2 as a harder wearing option but I want something tubeless.
