Thank you for this! I'm familiar with Abeka but this year my rising 2nd grader is going to a homeschool hybrid program (2 days per week at school, 3 days at home) and they use BJU. I looked through it and was pleasantly surprised. I had put Abeka on a pedestal and was happy to see BJU was very strong too. Helpful video for many of us, I'm sure!

O yes, BJU is great! I personally am more comfortable teaching Abeka but I do know BJU is very comparable to Abeka

I agree with this. I too put ABEKA on a pedestal and felt nothing could compare however as this video shows, there are other strong programs out there.

Thank you for sharing !! I had purchased Abeka spelling 2 for my struggling speller who’s going into grade 2 and watching this I just emailed them asking if they can switch it to level 1. Fingers crossed. I didn’t realize how much more advanced it was than where she’s at. She just completed level 1 the good and the beautiful la and she’s an amazing reader but spelling is a struggle and always sends her running.

My oldest has done Abeka spelling and enjoyed it. For this next school year I was looking for a spelling curriculum that included more practice exercises, so we are trying 180 Days of Spelling. The only con I’ve seen so far is that it is black and white so we will definitely miss Abeka’s colorful illustrations. We’ll see how things go! Thanks for sharing!

Do you recommend the teachers guide for Abeka spelling grade 1?

If just using spelling, no. But if you’re using all of Abeka LA then yes

We will be using Abeka to homeschool our son for the first time who will be going into 4th grade. I’m a little bit nervous about the spelling in 4th grade because the words do look a bit more challenging than what he was doing at his Brick & mortar school. He is used to his words sharing similar patterns such as the words affixes. Do you have any tips as to how to help transition him into this more challenging list? Thank you so much!!! ~Yessi

I’d say take your time. It will take a while to adjust to what works best for him (writing out the words every day or saying them aloud or typing them up, etc). If he’s a strong speller he should be ok. If spelling is an area that needs a little work, then it might be more of a challenge. Not that it can’t be done! But just have patience and find what works best for him. If after a good few weeks he’s miserable with it, then it’s time to re-evaluate and maybe consider going with another spelling curriculum

We are using Abeka this year for Grade 1 because we purchased their entire LA Video package and Spelling came with it. Im honestly not a fan. I like how BJU gives more activities to do that just writing the words out. I think we will switch to BJU for Spelling after we finish Abekas Grade 1.

Maybe you said it in your video, but I missed it - Why do you do a spelling curriculum instead of TGATB spelling? Thanks for the video!

My daughter didn’t like the idea of how they set up their spelling and wanted to do traditional spelling. She really enjoyed Abeka spelling this past year

What would u recommend for a 3rd grader that needs to learn a foreign language lik Spanish? I’m trying to find a curriculum that not only has a workbook (or online) but also a way to listen to the words!! I can teach Spanish words all day but I can’t teach how to pronounce them and all the curriculums I hav found so far jus has a workbook n that’s it!!! Any recommendations would be so helpful!!!

I’m not an expert in this area, but we’ve been doing Duolingo and you can hear a native Spanish speaker pronounce the words. It’s online, and it’s free too!

We are having spelling issues and we are unsure how we want to teach spellings!!! We are doing phonics work and want spelling to be taught that way!!! We don’t want them to test them as we found it didn’t work for us!!! We don’t mind missing the tests tho!!! My kids will enjoy not doing it that day!!! I love that bju has review words!!! I know with spelling my kids will be below grade level in spelling!!!

Have you looked into spelling you see? It’s a completely different approach to traditional spelling and a lot of people really like it!
