So you want to get into music production, but don't know which way to go. You're weighing two options: Ableton Live Intro, or Ableton Live Lite. The pros and cons are really hard to tell because of the various differences between the software. Just a quick tip, because so much gear comes with a free version of live lite, it worth jumping on to a music forum and ask if anyone has a spare copy they don't use. I have given away loads because I get one with other gear I have bought.

Hi Ive been using bandlab but wanted to give Lite Lite a try as i have a couple of synths that i cant use there. If you've got a spare key I'd be super grateful. I've heard great things about this daw.

@@pushpatternsso far i have barely used both but i personally prefer the abelton workflow of song arrangement. it just feels easier to jam with. I wish they made an android version of their app Note. i love hooking up my phone with FL studio mobile to MIDI and just chill on the couch and jam.

Im learning after buying a MIDI arturia minilab mkII but in my opinion 8 tracks is not enough on Ableton Live "Lite". 10 or 12 tracks would dothe job for a non-proffesional begineer

Yes this is true! It can feel very limiting. That’s where intro might be a good alternative! 16 tracks. Also now in the new update you get the Drift instrument, which is AMAZING :)

Some iOS apps include an Ableton Lite license too, I got mine from Koala Sampler ($5 dollars).

I got live lite with my Arturia controller. After a year & a half I updated to intro but it still lacks a lot of features. I got a refund and went to Standard at an upgrade price.

Hey thanks for this Aaron. What would say was the most limiting? Lack of samples, instruments, audio effects or track count? Or all? Just interested to know.

@@pushpatterns the track count is definitely limiting if you want to write your midi to audio or resample without flattening or removing the original track. There's work arounds like saving a copy of your set but it's nice to work in one set if you can. Intro also lacks EQ 8 & IIRC glue & dynamic compressors. A lot of Ableton videos pertaining to mixing are geared towards Standard or Suite, & not many consider Lite or Intro. This might be because the creators get a Standard/Suite license through school? It does leave a beginner feeling left out. Personally I think live lite with a controller is a good start for beginners. Once they become more experienced, Standard is worth the money. I think creators are very independent now & want the tools to mix/master their own music because it sounds very different when exported than it does in the DAW

Hey Aaron, Yes I thought the track count would be very limiting at some point. Yes, EQ8 is very important and would feel very limited with out it. I guess it great to get a feel for Ableton live and then if you like it you can up grade to standard straight away! Thank you for your comment it’s very insightful

Hey Neil! I would recommend getting the Akai MPK Mini it’s really good price and there is always loads on EBay! There is also a video on my page on how to get it set up with Ableton Live. If you need help getting started I have a great ableton beginner course on skillshare and udemy, just search up push patterns!

I think standard is great and you wouldn’t need to upgrade for a long time. But on the other hand intro is very cheap and you can always up grade if you feel limited by my the track count

You are right, Lite is very limited when it comes to audio effects. Especially the lack of EQ 8, which I think is a very important audio effect. I would suggest up grading to standard.

I believe you can but live intro was all I needed for t making music while travelling. The limited sounds Intro has actually makes songwriting easier. 👽🤘🏻@@DaveChips

Live lite is missing a lot of basic features like chance, probability, autopan effects, looper, external instrument etc... it's great to get started but limited.

I create mashups and remixes on Lite...it's fine for that. VSTs and AUs work fine, you don't have to use the Ableton devices (shock horror!) so you can use other free/cheap ones. That's what I do.

There is ONE feature I wish I had...Tempo Follow from a master track. But for free, I can live with automating any tempo changes manually.

Does anyone know if Intro has the ability to control external midi devices and can export piano roll as midi files? Both of those things Garageband cannot do and I'm getting frustrated with its limitations. I like the idea of using the same license for both a mac and a pc at the same time, too.

I agree 8 tracks will be very limiting if you are trying to record live drums! I would recommend getting the Standard version of Ableton Live for your situation. Remember there is 20% off at the moment!

Yes that is correct, it is a different version. You can only upgrade one you are in the paid versions of Ableton Live as I understand.

Yes you can unlimited plugins in a set, well, as much as your CPU can handle! and it also supports VST2, VST3 and Audio Unit v2 and v3

The operator synth would be able to cover this. You can go to the Ableton shop and buy individual Live instruments or as suggested below look for a free 3rd part VST. The Tal - Noisemaker is a good one! also check this new video I did about how to learn any synth. @@pushpatterns Believe it or not, I bought mine 4 decades ago when I was studying engineering. Since then, it has been my daily use item. I just replaced the foam rings several times and the wire once. A brand new one would be prettier, but as long as the sound is pristine, why change ?

@@pushpatterns Absolutely! These headphones are flat monitors, which can be less expensive and more reliable than various types of studio monitors. To achieve the same quality with studio monitors, you'd have to spend a lot, let me tell you. When mixing in a session with many people in the studio, I keep the large speakers on for everyone's comfort, but I use the Sony MDR headphones to set and check the equalization. Not many people use them because they aren't designed to flatter the ear with an enhanced sound profile and are inexpensive, so they might not seem impressive. However, they stand up to the best that money can buy. It's a bit like Yamaha synthesizers: their sounds might seem less rich or full at first, but in a mix, they are very accurate with minimal audio processing. You can layer multiple sounds without overloading the mix. This is how quality shines. 👌
