In this video, I review the Samsung T7 Portable SSD vs Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 vs HDD. I give awards to the best minimalist design, and also the best performance and more durable SSD. Enjoy 🙌!

I compared 2 SSDs (Solid State Drive) and a HDD (Hard Disk Drive) by running speed tests and going over the features of these drives. I had been searching for the best SSD (Solid State Drive) to store my projects (video, photoshop, etc.). Traditional Hard Drives are slow and can be a bit heavier to transport around. I decided it was time to switch to SSDs due to their speed and performance.
Today we’re going to look at 2 of the best portable SSDs on the market: the Samsung T7 Portable SSD and the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD v2. It’s so much more convenient to move an SSD after using a heavy and powered hard drive. Using an SSD instead of the HDD I had been using prior helped my workflow. Instead of needing both a power cable and a USB cable for the particular HDD I was using. I only need to bring a single USB cable to connect to this blazing fast drive!

I have both! I work on large (20~200gb) UE4 projects on my two T7s that light is nice you can tell if things are working. 2 years and they’re still great. Not really portable friendly because of their sleekness, I’ve dropped one a few times on my attempts at carrying them with me but everything seems fine. When I’m moving my laptop around the house sometimes I try to keep my two T7s plugged in, they’ll like slip off and smack eachother. These are better for stationary use or if you plan to hide them in a secure backpack or something after use. I got the Sandisk one for an on the go emergency backup. It’s very unlikely but I always get scared we’d have like a disaster a house fire or a robbery or something and I’d lose years of work. I don’t want to pay for a cloud service so having a durable SSD on me at all times gives me that sense of security. With the way it’s built it’s more suited for the outdoors than the T7. I never really keep track on how fast these things are but I’m transferring a 241gb folder from my T7 to my Sandisk and eta is about 2 hours 55 mins and sometimes the eta fluctuates. 11% in and it went to 1 hour 50 mins.

Last week attached a T7 1TB to my Xbox One, and Xbox One X. World of difference. Next gen consoles are impossible to get. But adding these to last gen consoles makes game launching, running games, so much better. Say goodbye to texture pop! Graphics are marginally improved in that the console does have to compensate for texture pop by down grading the texture. I am guessing. There could be a different but similar reason, but either way, games can look better. Especially when movement is taking place on screen. Much faster than on board internal drive. Wish I could transfer OS to the SSD.

Great vid Paul. Im torn between these as I have been looking at other SSD's and these are my top two. If I choose the Sandisk one do you think it is possible to just use any USB A to USB C cable to use instead of the adapter they supply? Or is there some cables that have better transfer speeds that can be used?
@pauldittus
@pauldittus 3 года назад
Hey friend! Thanks for joining the channel fam 🙌. Absolutely, you can use a different cable. I did a quick search and it looks like you should be able to get the max speeds of these drives with most new USB C cables. Looks like USB C 3.1 or newer should do the trick. However, your speeds could be limited based on the device with USB A port on your using. www.akitio.com/faq/356-are-all-usb-c-cables-the-same Have an awesome week 🙌 let us know what you end up going with or if you have any other questions.

We use USB-C to USB-C on our studio equipment ie. iMacs...our location kit is instead a Windows 11 MSI gaming machine certainly not your typical location Laptop. Here we use USB-C to USB-A and we have never found it lagging or dropping off and the dropping off of any HDD or SSD is as we know...is royally a pain in the a**. The one thing people miss interpret on is the cable....Personally we kept our Seagate cables and use them for location work as they are a lot beefier and transfer data, images, motion files excellently. One other thing we added to our location laptop is a standard Bank of America rubber credit card sleeve ... they sticky on to the outside of the machine and hold securely the SSD so we can use a mini length 4" cable...keeps things tidy and comfortably out of the way. Removal is easy as there is absolutely no residue left behind. @alvareo92 We we have had to utilize 10G for a few contracts....yes, the specific cable was introduced to attain those speeds. Was it worth it? likely not for us, but each instance is different. I personally don't require 10G transfer speed ... as that is the time i get to actually enjoy the few minutes of downtime to myself. Great vid Paul...keep up the good work my friend

@pauldittus
@pauldittus 2 года назад
Thanks, Annette 😊! I'm so sorry to hear about your hard drive failing. Both have worked great for me (I will be returning the Sandisk to company). I would also recommend looking into a backup system to protect your files. There are systems like the 3-2-1 method that could be helpful. This is where you have 3 copies of your data: 2 local, and 1 offsite. I personally haven't done this... yet. At the very least I'm personally looking at Backblaze to at least back up my files offsite. Sadly, hard drive failure can happen when you least expect it. Hope this helps! As a professional video editor, I know storage is a huge deal. I got 2 NVMe SSDs and 3 SATA HDDs sitting in my desktop computer totaling in 2.5TB of NVMe storage and 25TB of HDD storage. My workflow usually is storing projects I am currently working on on my M.2 NVMe SSDs and later moving them to HDDs when I am done with them or barely need to change stuff in them because they are basically done. I went for the T7 2TB ssd to actually get footage I recorded on the shooting (I am also a professional camera operator/DP) over to my PC, but the SanDisk wouldve worked just as well. They are basically the same devices. Just grab the one that is currently cheaper or the one you find better looking. Keep in mind, when copying large amounts of files at once, the writing speed usually dramatically decreases once you have written files worth of 25% of the entire storages space. The reason behind this is that manufacturers usually only have 1/4th amount of the storage being SLC (single level cell) storage and write to that first. The longer time storage is usually TLC (triple level cell) storage, which is much more compact but also only 33% as fast as the SLC storage. When not currently using your SSD, it will automatically move the copied files from the SLC cache over to the TLC storage to then be able to copy stuff quickly again. Thats why it only really matters much, if you copy A LOT at once. If you have ever edited a video in 4K with multiple cameras recording in intra frame codec, you know that 500GB of footage are easily recorded, even when not recording in raw. But even for shootings with 1 camera you can also easily fill up 500GB or more, depending on what you are doing - but filling them in a day is no problemo even in Inter frame codecs with just 1 camera. 1TB may be enough for most of your shoots - just keep in mind that the 1TB version of either of these devices will get slow twice as fast compared to its 2TB counter part, because 1TB SSDs usually just have 250GB of the desirable very fast SLC storage, while 2TB ones usually have 500GB.

When you own over 16,000 music videos and these Sandisk Extreme Pro 4tb are unreliable this was unacceptable to me especially before a gig! Thank god I had a good backup in my "Lacie 5tb" external hd. and after shipping it back (Sandisk) and also returning the replacment one at the same time and getting my refund and investigated more about those Sandisk problems and found out they had all similar issues to mine, So I went on to buy the SSD "Samsung 4TB Shield" after doing my research about them so I bought it and happy that I did with no issues! I'm using Samsung T7 Touch 2TB for some months. It's great SSD, but sometimes make me problems. 1) When you watching video and occasionally rewind it back and forward, the SSD may stuck and even disconnect from the PC. 2) The same thing occurs, if you're working simultaneously with many opened files. Eg. converting video and make backup. 3) It happened several times: I work on one PC, and later open my work on another PC and see like all files in the folder still unchanged! Windows "Scan disk" can solve that problem, and all changed and new files appears as it should be. Seems like SSD for unknown reason doesn't update the file structure. *) I know about "Eject disk" command and always do it before disconnecting my SSD. 4) This disk is very sensitive to USB-cable and may not work properly with some. /// My older SAMSUNG T5 500GB had another problem. It sometimes made me errors with saving big files. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. T7 has no that problem.
@pauldittus
@pauldittus 2 года назад
Thanks for sharing friend! Do you have all the drives formatted the same (btw don’t format a drive unless you’ve got all your data secure in another location)? @@pauldittus I’m electronics engineer, and we use a lot of these SSD for one of our projects. I also have one T7 and one T5 as my own. I can compare and may to say - described problem isn't my specific. 1) T7 have no problem to store files one-by-one, but if some apps working simultaneously with many opened files, intensive cross-transferring data may ruine USB connection. 2) My SSD formatted as NTFS. 3) As I’ve said, the USB cable is important, and T7’s own cable isn't best. I recommend cables of TrippLite. 4) Yes, I have T7 Touch, but I don't think it really encrypts user data. SSD just hiding the main partition, making it “Unallocated”. Didn't trying, but I think, any partition tool can make it with all user data visible. For real encryption I recommend VeraCrypt app. 5) Also recommend to install Samsung Magican for update SSD firmware, because native utility doesn't do the work. 6) As a conclusion, T7 is still one of the best of external SSD, but I can't call it “trusted device”. So, after saving really important data will be a good practice disconnect it, reconnect again and check your files.

Hey there friend! Great question. So I actually use my SSD to edit videos and for some of my creative project files. I prefer using an external drive as it's less stress on my internal hard drive. Yes, from what I understand about Thunderbolt 3 is that it can do everything a USB-C port can, and it’s faster. 20 Gbps vs 40 Gbps. Although the speed of the drive and other factors will determine the transfer speeds. 2. I’ve used it with my iPad Pro (mine is the generation before the M1 version I believe). It worked fine. To be honest, either should be great! You can format the drive according to your OS needs. Personally, I like the look and the cable of the Samsung better, but I also like the durability and the ruggedness of the Sandisk.

I just bought the 2 TB version of the SanDisk SSD (albeit, it has not been delivered yet) . . . Question - why am I seeing so many complaints about this SSD overheating and more important, is this systemic to all SSDs or just the SanDisk Extreme Portable? Thank you in advance . . .

@pauldittus Год назад
Hey Steven! Great question. When I was using the Sandisk for work, I didn’t have any major issues with it. Perhaps others here have had other experiences, but from my personal experience it worked great for me. Also the Samsung SSD that I use now hasn’t had major issues either so I have yet to see if it’s systematic or an occasional issue with SSDs. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help with. Welcome to the channel fam my friend 🎉

Hi Paul, thanks for the review. I'm considering to buy an external ssd, but during my research, many people say sandisk tends to get hot when you work directly from it. Do you experience the same problem? Does samsung T7 tends to get hot too like sandisk? Thank you, i will be waiting for your response😊

Hey there friend! I’m trying to remember if either drive gets particularly hot. I personally haven’t had any overheating issues that have impacted the performance of the drives that I’ve noticed. I have seen reviews on Amazon of others having issues with the Samsung T7. What are you planning to use the drive for? I would imagine for most things either drive should work great 👍

So sorry to hear about that. When I was using the SanDisk I didn't experience the same glitch. Did the drive always do this? Do you know the format of your SSD? @pauldittus
@pauldittus 11 месяцев назад
Great question my friend. First I will say I've been hesitant to recommend Sandisk SSDs recently due to people having issues with them. I personally haven't had any issues with the Sandisk that I used in the past, but something to keep in mind. For backup I would suggest considering a backup system instead of just one drive. Yes, this drive can do a fantastic job of holding a copy of data and be able to have quick read and write speeds. Most professionals recommend a 3-2-1 backup system. This is where you have 3 backups: 2 local and 1 offsite. I personally haven't gotten to this level, but I have decided to use Backblaze as a part of my backup system. I know the pain of lost files. Having a good backup system is great for preventing lost files. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
