Slap is for massive armies. And you can make slap more interesting by using alternative base colors. As black and white creates a muted color scheme. So for instance a dull darker pink with a more saturated pink mid tone and a white on top can result in making your yellows shift from a yellow to a orange with a saturation boost along light rims and it looks interesting.

Great advice. Perhaps something I can explore! Thanks for watching :)

I mean, layering is always going to be the superior technique. Slapchop is just trying to create an illusion that you've done the layering technique. I think slapchop, or even contrast over a zenithal prime, gets close enough to the look of actually doing real layering, that it's worth the reduction in time spent. But yeah, contrast over slapchop won't be winning any Golden Demons. You'll get a better result with slapchop though if you push the contrast further on the undercoat. You killed a bit too much of the black with the grey, and you didn't push the highlights white enough, which is why it looks a little more flat. If the blacks stay black, and you push the highlights all the way to bright white, only leaving grey as a midtone, a slapchopped mini will pop a lot more.

Yeah looking back you're right. Thanks for the feedback!

I feel like layering helped your individual style shine through way more on this. And a few elements of the mini, especially the hammer, look way better on the layered mini IMO!

Exactly. I feel like with slapchop it's easy for minis to look the same. There's no room for individuality in my experience. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave a comment!

Why not use both? Slapchop gets them quickly on the table so you can play with them. Another bonus is that more of the underpainting gets preserved. I would just consider replacing black and grey with a dark color and a brighter version of it, a mother color. Maybe brown or red for an orc as an example. Then use layering, edge highlighting and glazes on the minis when you got more time to paint them up to 11. I personally think that edge highlighting and a few, well placed layers would have the greatest effect. Especially if you pick out details like teeth, runes, eyes, warts and other small details. This can be done on a whole army or just on the stand-out miniatures like heroes, leaders, greater monsters etc.

I've never truly deep dived into slapchop with different coloured primers as I've always gravitated towards layering. I think Tabletoptime and others have developed newer versions of the slapchop technique since this upload. But thank you for sharing your experiences and ideas it means a lot!

Layering is amazing but due to the size and amount of work going into my builds most of my minis have to take the back seat which is why i stick to slapchop.

That's perfectly understandable. I keep my stuff on a shelf so like to put as much time in as I can

You know the worst thing, obviously the layering is obviously much better but for a person that is more into wargaming it's not that much better. So I think slap chop is brilliant the people that just want to get big armies done to an acceptable standard. Personally I don't play 40K any more, but I love the miniatures so I'll happily spend hours painting one figure, it's so relaxing with a cool film on the background. But for the games I'm actually playing I want my armies done this decade! So's slap chops great. I'm aiming to do a massive Lizard man army for the ninth age over a long weekend. There's 250 models in this army, I think it's possible and from test models it looks like I can do a figure in about 10 minutes after the dry brushing stage. Honestly I think scraping the mould lines off takes longer.

Agreed. I don't play any of the tabletop games. I just (like you said) love the miniatures. So I like having cool looking stuff on my shelf. Absolutely nothing wrong with slapchop. When done right it can look ace! Good luck with your lizard man army, that's a lot of models to paint! Thanks for watching bud
