In primary, we started with addition and subtraction. Order ? Always left to right. Then, the multiplication got introduced. Order ? Multiplications first, then, left to right. Add the division. Divisions = same priority as multiplication. At about the same time, the parentheses got introduced. Now, order become : Content of parentheses, then multiplication & divisions, then addition & subtraction. Always left to right for equal priority.

Although my math teacher was to the point, it was boring. I wish I had a teacher like you, the enthusiasm is making it nice to keep watching.

Greetings. The answer is obviously (d) because 4^2-2^4 is the same as (2^2)^2-2^4= 2^4-2^4=0. It does not appear that any of the other answers would have resulted into a negative number.

Paper and pencil? There’s nothing here that should require even that. Both the figuring and remembering the answers should be a simple mental exercise.

Does smallest include/mean "largest negative?"
@russlehman2070
@russlehman2070 9 дней назад
Yes, but none of those are negative.
@gavindeane3670
@gavindeane3670 9 дней назад
It doesn't matter here because none of the numbers are negative, but "smallest" isn't precise mathematical terminology - because it raises exactly this question. "Smallest" could be interpreted as "the number that is less than all the others", which is your "largest negative" concept. But "smallest" could also be interpreted as "smallest magnitude". Both interpretations are reasonable. They mean the same thing when all the numbers are positive so he gets away with saying "smallest" here, but if some of the numbers were negative then he would need to word the question more precisely.

What you say about the number of times a number is multiplied by itself is misleading. Something squared is not multiplied twice, only once. 3^3 is really only two multiplications. Perhaps you can be more clear so people don't literally multiply the number of times of the exponent. The number of times to multiply is the exponent MINUS one.

I've often thought this as well. I never bothered to comment and bring this up but I'm glad to see that someone else finally mentioned it.
@iank781
@iank781 9 дней назад
The way I have always understood it is, the exponent is the number of times that the base would appear if you wrote it out long hand. So, 2^2 is 2 X 2, 2^3 is 2 X 2 X 2 et seq.
@pysankar
@pysankar 9 дней назад
@@iank781 That's true. What we mean is that the operation of multiplying the base is only happening one less time. 3^2=3*3. He always says that the base is multiplied twice when actually it's only multiplied by itself one time. At about 2:44 he says "take three and multiply it by itself two times". He should say "multiply it by itself one time."

Again, there is no reason for PEMDAS in this problem! PEMDAS does not apply. For example: (3-2)^5 = (1)^5 = (3-2)*(3-2)*(3-2)*(3-2)*(3-2) = 1 x 1 x 1 x 1 * 1 = 1 This is the only expression that you could possibly use your PEMDAS on of the four, and as you see, it doesn’t matter which you do first, what’s inside or expanding the exponent. If you can’t understand this then there is no way you can understand a parenthetical Statement of the form a(x + y)^b, where you have your choice where to Start, you can either expand the implied multiplier, or the exponent, but you actually cannot start inside the Parentheses because they are variables and the exponent and implied multiplier are constants. In mathematics we use letters like a, b, and c as constants and x, y, and z as variables; ax + by, + cz = 0 for example!. Implied multipliers are how many times you add the parentheses and the exponent is the number of times you multiply the parentheses and the other is carried along. For example 2(x + y)^3 = (x + y)^3 + (x + y)^3 = 2(x + y) * 2(x + y) * 2(x + y) = {(x + y) + (x + y)} * {(x + y) + (x + y)} * {(x + y) + (x + y)} Notice: your understanding of PEMDAS does not apply! The “P” in PEMDAS does not mean just what’s inside the parentheses, it means the parenthetical statement, HUGE DIFFERENCE! Implied operators only operate on the object they are associated with and cannot be separated or converted into a fixed operator, which would have a different meaning.

Note about phone numbers: If you want "demonstration" numbers they are in the form: NXX-555-0XXX, where N is a digit from 2-9, and X is a digit from 0-9. This is well known, and you will see these numbers in movies and TV shows. It prevents poor unknown people from getting bombarded with useless phone calls. Hopefully people don't call the number you mentioned.
