MooseStacheFlyer unboxing:
MICRO BURST 3 by Whelen AeroSpace NON TSO USE FOR VFR DAYTIME ONLY
Pulsar Nav Strobe by AeroLeds EXCEED DAYTIME TSO REQUIREMENTS
UPDATE: BREE FROM WHELEN MESSAGED ME AND ARE SENDING US A SET OF ORION 600 THAT MEET THE TSO REQUIREMENTS! SO PART 2 WILL BE A HEAD TO HEAD BATTLE!!!
Which one is better and why??
Lux AP used to evaluate and give us a base line number to compare each light with.
AERO Pulsar--- BEST 6300
Whelen micro3-- BEST 3900
Conclusion: AERO PULSAR
Aero pulsars are built better with better seals, clearly can see that just by holding them. They win with ease of install over Whelen for sure. They did get warm quick but during a flight i do not believe you would get this. Frustrating enought the Whelen glass got cloudy after the first use....wild. This made me overall disapointed as i thought the Whelens would at-least perform well and be a clean install...i mean Citations use whelen for nav/strobe. I think whelen is on to something and will continue to improve the experimental side of the house...but for right now AEROLEDS is the way i am going, sending the others back to aircraft spruce today.

Where's part two, I would love to see the comparison! :) Thanks, Kody

For those of you who are complaining that the comparison is not apples to apples, I believe you are incorrect. Look up the model numbers and you will see that the AeroLEDs are the experimental version. Aero LED is clear that their experimental version and TSO version have exactly the same output. You can check the specs yourself. WAT experimental lights have substantially less power than their TSO version and the price reflects that. So, the test is apples to apples (experimental to experimental).

Why not testing separately? You had them both switched on at the first test, then sort of covered with hands on a second test.. I would expect the difference wouldn't be that much if the test was done separately, even putting the cardboard in between. You also mentioned "to cool down". Which ones are getting hotter and how many amps they draw separately? But thanks for the video...

You're not comparing Apples to Oranges. The Pulsar should be compared to the Orion 650, which is TSO approved for night flight, not the Microburst. This test is useless.

@@MooseStacheFlyer you’re comparing a Ferrari vs a Ford and making the observation that a Ferrari is a better car. Why keep this online?

I cant believe this misleading video is still up. This is not a fair comparison.

Thanks for doing this test! Looking forward to part 2. What I would like to see is a test at night from a distance. Separate both lights by a distance of say 25 feet (the further the better). Power up both lights. Then go several hundred feet away (the further away the better to simulate what you might see if you were actually flying at night and looking at these from a good distance. Then ask a couple of people to observe and comment which one is brighter and/or which flash pattern is more noticeable. I think that light meters or the app on your phone is not the best way to evaluate the strobes. Another thing that you may want to address is the requirement that the lights MUST BE FAA-APPROVED even for night flight in an experimental aircraft. I have read at least 2 DARs comments that although this is not always enforced it is technically a requirement. See DAR Mel Asberry's column on this in the October 2017 issue of Kitplanes.

Just a thought, I would actually want brighter lights flying in E and G airspace where see and avoid is the way of the world. Flying into class C it is controlled and they know exactly where you are, less important for bright lights. But either way the brighter the better I agree! Stay safe

It would be nice to know if both lights are capable of multi- blink options, or what the pattern is. Looked like they were different but it was difficult to tell and I didn’t hear you mention it.

@@billcuster Hi there! The Microburst demonstrated uses CometFlash which is a trademark of Whelen. 4 impulses of light form a flash pattern that leads to more on time over a single flash impulse from generation one strobes. Later in the later generations, whelen introduced the comet flash into its other strobe supplies for aircraft. The pattern on the aero led is a standard simple on off, a longer single burst of light. Whelen offers the same flash pattern as AeroLEDs on there Orion series and other lights. I will make a video of the patterns to demonstrate. I'll try to let you know once its up. The old strobe supplies and microburst leds come with simultaneous or alternating flash selection.
