@@qroo you should not be publishing that information on the Internet. You now run the risk of causing the Mexican authorities to crack down on that consulate. That is the Consulate I used because I was living in that area. And I can confirm that as of late 2020 when I applied they were lenient and it was a stress-free experience unlike my friend who applied from Michigan and they made him jump through hoops with special requests for paperwork and he had two follow-up appointments before it was completed. I suggest you edit that Consulate name out of your video and ask people to email you for the information instead from your website.
I got mine in mcallen two months ago not for the lower standards but because they were the only consulate i could get an appointment with close to austin. Excellent experience, in and out in 30 minutes, they were on time, organized and polite. kinda like qrooo...🤣
I got my residency in McAllen in August 2020. I remember the official asked me how I traveled to the Consulate and I told her I had driven. She quickly asked if I was sure I wanted permanent residency as I would not be able to temporarily import my car. I explained that I had just driven from Mexico and not to worry, the car has Mexican plates. Their service was excellent and clearly she was looking out for my best interests.
@@stevecordrey1133 I applied based upon my pension income. I included sufficient financial resources as well but I believe that it was not important. The rules permit PR given sufficient financial resources so I would hope it would be possible but unfortunately I cannot provide a definitive response. Good luck!
For anyone reading this please keep in mind that if you plan to apply at McAllen based on monthly income and not retirement income, they will ask you for a letter from your employer stating you will continue working while in México for that company 😉
I heard that sometimes they do not give the same weight to your "employment" if you are self employed. I mean, I could easily show my bank records for the past year and have no problem meeting those requirements. I'm also curious if I should go ahead and jump through this hoop even though my son, who will be traveling with me/doing the driving, does not meet the income requirements. I wonder if somehow it could still benefit us both if I was a temp. resident....he works for me but is an adult so cannot cover him under my own income.
Hi Paul. its 1/19/23 and I just got my appointment in McAllen. This is what they sent to me for TEMP Residency. Economic Solvency: Original and photocopy of last twelve months of your bank account statements or investment account showing an average monthly balance of $44,971.00 US Dollars; and/or Original Yearly Pension/ Social Security Statement or paystubs proving a monthly income of $2,698.00 US Dollars during the past six months, and one photocopy. You can also submit official documents proving the ownership of a property/company/business and one photocopy. Consular fee 51.00 USD Please Note. One thing they do that others do not is let you use proof that you are a property, company or business owner. I assume this would be in lieu of the savings and pay requirements.

@@pkkim9384 When you arrive at the airport you can get a 180 day tourist visa, just tell the person you want 180 day, pay, I believe it was around forty US dollars no other questions, I have done this several times, just did it again three days ago, pretty much automatic.

The current financial requirement for the McAllen consulate is $2590. Or a bank account with $103,524. Things change rather quickly. Thanks for the excellent videos!

McAllen changed their financial requirements for 2023. I just had my appointment today (Jan 11th) and they required $4500 for permanent residency. Temporary residency is also adjusted much higher although I don't know the exact amount. They didn't care that I lived in Louisiana and they only needed to see 6 months of bank statements. The fee was $51 that can be paid with cash or a card. There is a passport photo business a couple minutes away if you need it. It's $10 for 2 photos.
San Diego is a joke. They rejected me even with the employment letter because they needed my employer to sign and even attach the copy of my boss’ driver’s license. Also they only accept cash which means they are doing something funky with taxes. They rejected me even with my way above financial requirements income

My wife and I have decided to go the savings and investments route. Orlando has a minimum bank balance of $177,000 for the previous 12 months where the permanent resident Visa is concerned. We also have $2600.00 in retirement and Social Security each month. My youngest son will be moving down with us and the savings and investments are $45,460 for the previous 12months on the temporary Visa.
When I reached out to this consulate to verify requirements before making travel arrangements, they sent me the changes: Economic Solvency: Original and photocopy of last twelve months of your bank account statements or investment account showing an average monthly balance of $44,971.00 US Dollars; and/or Original Yearly Pension/ Social Security Statement or paystubs proving a monthly income of $2,698.00 US Dollars during the past six months, and one photocopy. We brought all of our bank statements to the consulate, along with the other paperwork. I was asked, Permanent or Temporary Resident. I said, that's up to you. 45 minutes later, Perm. Resident. I never knew what the requirements were. Was never told. Living permanently in Cabo San Lucas since July 28. Oh, yeah. I was in Raleigh NC.
Before all these new income requirements and before covid people were flat out being denied for no particular reason at many Mexican Consulates. They seemed to have a you got to get past me attitude People who had this happen to them were getting landed at the one in Phoenix. These success stories were up on google is where I read this
The latest financial requirements uploaded to their site shows much more: Original and copy of documents showing that the applicant has a job or pension that yields a monthly income of $2,730.00 USD after taxes during the previous 6 months. (bring the last 6 months of your paystubs and the bank statements that shows the direct deposit of your salary).

I too have noticed inconsistencies between consulates, regarding registering foreign births of Mexican citizens. At one consulate I was told I had to go to Mexico City to do it. So I "shopped around" and found a consulate that would handle the process in house
I benefited from the fact that I arrived in 2020 and at that time and the months preceding, the exchange rate was between 21-24 pesos. Also, my consulate was Oxnard, and that may’ve been a factor as well. I believe the minimum wage changed as well. But at that time, where I was the amount needed was around $1,800.
@@qroo , even more than you know. The Consulate had stopped taking appointments due to Covid, and made an exception because I had rented an apartment just two months prior!
You said it! Interpretation is everything! While the consulate in Houston states “average monthly balance “ for your bank statement, they actually required a minimum balance each month, not to drop below that. I explained what average means and showed it where it says on the statement, “ average monthly balance”. We found a way around it, but take everything with you. My marriage certificate stating that my name is my legal name saved me also! They wanted me to change my name on the passport! That won’t happen.

Wow. I was planning to get my mom's resident visa for medical (nursing home) purposes and I just checked her 2022 SS statement and her SS benefits totaled $2,643 per month (before medicare deduction). After the Medicare deduction, her benefit drooped to $2,473. So I'm really hoping that the amount you are talking about is the Gross/total benefits (before Medicare is deducted) ??? This looks like it's teeter-tottering on GO or NO-GO! UPDATE: I just found out that the new 2023 benefit requirement is $3,300 per month! Looks like Mexico is out of the question!
You can always start with RT, renew year by year, or in a chunk, and then to upgrade to RP, wait through 4 years of RT, and then convert to RP. No financial requirements.

In So Cal, SD is high, LA asks where you live and says no if out of area, Phoenix was lower amount and very nice email communication and well, if had not made it in San Diego, would have drove to PHX.
Great video Paul. Of course I am a "Wanting to know how sausage is made kinda guy. I attempted to do all this in Canada, and would have had to travel from the west coast all the way to the east of Canada to get the lowest solvency rate, which at the time was, would you believe around $1100 CAD a month! I couldn't get in there and get an appointment during the last few years for many reasons. Now that I am stuck here for at least another year, my hope is that they end up going the UMA route finally for everyone who want to gain temporary residency. Excellent video as always.
Just read the website for the consulate in Chicago and they are showing a monthly income needed for temp residency at 1505.00 per month after taxes. very interesting
They must be using the UMA standard too. We are seeing more consulates using it these days. Since this video came out, I have been receiving information from viewers who applied at consulates all across the U.S. I will be doing an updated financial requirements video sometime next week.
If you can't fulfill the income and/or retirement requirement, you can show the bank statements with a certain amount being there about a year. We don't know how much it is now.
I was reading online yesterday on one of the sites and they pointed out that they use a different multiplier, instead of UMA it was something like WM, within Mexico. In other words, instead of going through the process at a consulate in the US, that you do it within Mexico. They use the lower multiplier at these locations. All I can say is look it up.
within Mexico they use the UMA to configure financial solvency but to get the original temporary resident visa you have to go to an embassy in the country where you reside. so if you are a USA citizen you have to go to an embassy or consulate in the USA. you can not go to immigration within mex territory for initial residency visa. when the visa is renewed you have to do it within Mexican territory.
A couple of notes. Out of curiosity, I looked at the numbers for McAllen a few months ago (it was $1722 for RT then). They do not appear to be using UMA, but have decreased the number of MW (Daily minimum Wage) days from 300 days to 200 days in the “McAllen” formula and recently adjusted their USD to MXN exchange rate used to $19.9275 to 1. So, $1735usd x 19.9275 = $34,574 mxn. 34,574 / 172.87 MW = 200 days of Daily Minimum Wage required monthly to qualify for Temporary Residency. The other note is that the use of the UMA by INM inside of Mexico also modifies the formula. If you look at the financial requirements to change (before 4 years of TR has expired) temporary resident to permanent resident, 500 days of UMA or $48,110 mxn monthly are required, 500 x 96.22 = 48,110.
That is an interesting observation. Since the formulas themselves are mandated by Mexican law, I saw them as using the UMA but with an exchange rate of around $16.65 MXN to 1 USD: 300 X 96.22= $28,866 / 16.65 = $1,733.69. I guess the only person who knows for sure is the one at the consulate in McAllen who came up with this number in the first place. Maybe he or she will comment and let us know. :)
@@qroo Ok, but the usd to mxn exchange rate hasn’t touched $1 usd to $16.65 mxn since 2015 and McAllen just changed the USD amount required in the last 2 months (from $1722 to $1735) With all due respect, my money is on the 200 days being used in the “McAllen” formula since the math checks out perfectly.
@@qroo It was around around $2500 like all of the other Consulates at the beginning of the year. They actually lowered it to $1728 late Feb or early March. They require your "Original Social Security Benefit Letter" if going by a pension and now require a continuous monthly income, whereas before you could get a Resident Visa showing just six months of salary.
You say you don't know why there is no consistency or uniformity in the way Mexican consulates do business. I know why. If I had to describe Mexico in one word, it would be: Incompetence. Add to that the fact that there is no government because organized crime runs the government and police, and you have a country that it's crazy to move to. People who disagree simply do not - yet - have all the facts.
McAllen is one of the poorest, if not the poorest, region in the United States. Many people walk from Mexico to the US to work daily. Families have members living on both sides of the border. Maybe the folks at the consulate took that into consideration when deciding to use the new average?
It may be one of the poorest on paper, but sure is growing by economic leaps and bounds. All sorts of 150k+ homes popping up all over the place. When I first arrived there in 2006, all sorts of old junkers on the road. Now all you see is newer cars on the road.
Very unlikely given that the majority of Americans seeking residency are looking to move further inland, especially given the current reputation of Reynosa. The opposite, however, is very true. It is much easier for a Mexican living along the border to get a tourist visa vice a Mexican living further inland. A Mexican in Reynosa can legitimately claim they want to travel to the US to buy school supplies for their children. In Mexico City, a similar response would likely result in a refusal given that the cost of the trip would greatly outweigh any possible savings. When I was crossing into Laredo a couple of weeks ago, the woman behind me in my line was going to Walmart just to buy some vitamins that were not available in Nuevo Laredo. Needless to say someone would not fly from Mexico City to do the same.

If you have a good agent then the process at the INM office in Mexico should proceed smoothly. At least it did for me in Ensenada. What other non-European country could you choose where it would be more orderly? I suppose S. Korea, Malaysia or the Philippines, but I was over there for 3 decades and I want no more of that Asian culture crap.

The quakes only last a couple minutes. La Paz is really beautiful but i don’t want to deal with the heat over there. I'm looking at the Baja area also and hoping that my mother can join me there. There are several senior care homes in Tijuana, Rosarito and Ensenada - which I toured - that would be suitable for her and much less expensive than similar care in the USA.

And you might have made the demand so great that it possibly force them to start apply a geographical restriction or using a different calculation for those are not from the lower income area of south Texas. Or hopefully it might make other consulates embarrassed and start using a more favorable calculation but I doubt that would be the effect.

The amount for permanent resident (retirees) is $2588. The gap between temporary and permanent is pretty big. Any insight to the difference?
So glad 5 years ago I got my temp then graduated to Permenent. My interest is travel in South Asiia but with family and a granddaughter in the US I do need to hang out in this hemisphere occasionally. I have lately spent more time in Mexico and lived cheaply getting dental done and visits to the US while avoiding the recent infections and living worry free in mello Mexico. Longterm I am ready to start more time in South Asia with shorter stays in Mexico. For me Mexico is Land of the near Free! And swell.

Hey Paul Great video! These numbers so much more tangible for myself and my family than any other consulate. Question to you I’m a little confused is no matter what number you need to bring in per month for whatever consulate does that mean you are not allowed to spend that money for your expenses? For instance if I brought in $2500 per month for six months I could show that through paystub‘s does that mean I cannot touch that money I need additional income to cover my personal expenses for my family and not touch that money? McAllen does ask for the past 12 months, not 6. While they want to see paystubs, they also want to see the bank account where the funds were deposited. The intent is not that you will not touch that money but rather that you have access to that money so that you can fund your life in Mexico.
The Mcallen consulate is now $2,590 and or $103,000 in your account for 6 months. Raleigh NC is $2,700 a month or $107,000 for 6 months in your account. What is going on?

@@knerduno5942 it is very difficult. I had to ring them multiple times at different times of the day over several days to get someone to pick up the phone. They then keyed in the appointment for me. That was in Q4 2020. I forgot the exact month and in July 2021 thieves broke the glass window of my SUV in the Walmart parking lot in Ensenada and stole my passport. Thus I have lost any record of what date I applied.
I have my appointment in McAllen on Aug 10. Fingers crossed nothing changes with the requirements till after that time. I plan to move to Mazatlán Mexico in October.
Some cool things about going to McAllen are that they are very prompt, nice and considerate when helping you. It's also a migratory bird route where you're able hear and enjoy all types of birds singing their songs! BTW-Try not to notice the holsters....

It is not true now, 5/17/23 I was turned down as a single. It is now $53,700 a year. You have to have a minimum $4,475 a month. Note - they only will accept US Banks - nothing foreign for investment.
There is a consulate in California that has approximately the same income requirement as the Texas consulate, at least that was the case up to a few years ago maybe it has changed to the higher requirement with the way everything has changed the past 2-3 years you need to check it out or perhaps you already have since you did not mention it.
The formulas that determine financial solvency are based on the “Daily minimum wage” in the interior of Mexico, $172.87 mxn for 2022. That is a 22% increase from 2021. A few years ago, in 2019, the MW was $102.68 mxn per day. The average exchange rate in 2019 was about $19.25 mxn to $1 usd. So using the standard formula of 300 x MW, $102.68 x 300 = $30,804 mxn required monthly to qualify. 30,804 / 19.25 (exchange rate in 2019) = $1,600 usd per month.
@@debbiederas6233 I think he is referring to the one in Riverside or the one in Santa Ana. You have to live in Riverside or Orange County to qualify at either one. I live just outside of LA and I've heard that if you live in CA you have to use the Consulate in your county or go to another state whose Consulate will accept you. In LA it's over $2600us per month required.

That is one of the most frustrating things about Mexico! No two offices of the same agency seem to work by the same rules!! They make it up as they go! Whenever there is a change in local government, every supportera gets a job, a complete changeover. Corruption! There is little permanent professional cadre. It's chaos!!

If you are looking for a mail service in the US I highly recommend Americas mailboxes in South Dakota. They provide excellent customer service. I can check my mail on line and then have them ship to Mexico upon request. I also use them for registering my US plated vehicle in SD. See Paul´s blog about why SD plates are found here in Mexico.Its because of his info I found the Americas mailboxes and decided to go with them as my mail forwarding service.
@@qroo that may work for some people but it depends on what you need. My svc allows me to view all my mail on line and determine whether I need it and also provides a pdf copy. If I choose to have it sent then they arrange for the shipment and get it through customs. If your relatives can do all of that for you then you’re very lucky!
Hi. Here's a BIG question for you that will help my situation and also may help a lot of other married couples. If we or anyone else out there can't meet the solvency requirements. Can just one spouse apply and get there Temp Visa at Consulate (we would use the annual savings requirement of $43,000) and then once we move over the other spouse could apply through "Family Unit Residency" then provide a Apostilled Marrige certificate along with husband/or wife's new Temp Residency card to receive Temp Residency? I read this is a valid route, but wanted you to confirm...its a little scary moving there if I'm not guaranteed I can get TR and stay in MX with my husband. Thanks 😊
It is a valid path but there might be an easier way. In the case of a married couple, both people do not need to meet the financial requirements separately. One person can be the primary and the other more of a dependent. That is what Linda and I did. I had a pension and she did not have any income. Adding a dependent adds about $800 USD to the amount of money you need to have. That's it. If it didn't work, you could always fall back on getting done later in Mexico.
@@qroo Ok I'll have read up and see what the extra dollar amt is if I go as a dependent under savings route. We are just under the limit to go the monthly income limit because I can't use my income because I'll be quitting my job to move to MX...so just have husband's SS benefits. We have no problem meeting the requirements for permanent residency in Mexico, but not certain we wish to do that. We've had 180 day tourist visas for decades...almost 5. That seems to quench our longing for Mexican culture. One problem I have is I'm a disabled combat veteran and I receive excellent health care at my VAMC or through community care Optum insurance from the VA. I love being in the north country in the 6 months not covered in snow...actually, we usually get to Mexico just before the winter holidays and return in late April. I haven't checked but would the VA's insurance program cover me when in Mexico? I've heard conflicting reports. You must start the process for a Temporal or Permanente outside of Mexico at a consulate. You do not “trade your tourist visa”. Last winter, our next door neighbour in Mexico was a US vet and he had to return to USA for medical treatment.
The only way you can exchange a tourist visa for residency is if you apply under family reunification (marriage, birth of a child, etc.). Permanent residency can save you money long term but only if you do not plan on bringing a US plated vehicle to Mexico (you cannot do this as a permanent resident). I was traveling frequently to Mexico as a tourist and the entry fees can really add up; as a PR I no longer have to pay. I also obtained an INAPAM card (for those 60 and over) and it provides some decent discounts (as an example bus fares are only 50% of the adult fare, national parks are half off the Mexican rate (my Mexican girlfriend laughs since she now has to pay more than me; in the past I was stuck paying the higher foreigner rate))

This is very discretionary; I had an official at the border near Nuevo Laredo offer to just let me back in without actually crossing the bridge. I have also been given another 180 days at the Guatemalan/Mexican border simply by crossing and getting a Guatemalan stamp. I was not in Guatemala even an hour. Be aware thought that they are starting to only give the number of days that your purpose of travel requires.
Has anyone NOT gotten your visa back the same-day as your McAllen consulate visit? I'm being told to stay in McAllen for up to 3 extra days just in case they have trouble printing the visa in plastic inside my passport. Also, does McAllen accept home-printed bank statements? I'm also being told I need to go to my bank and have them print the statements out so that it's "certified," but I've never heard anyone else have to do that. THANK YOU!

There are a lot of inconsistent standards in Mexico. I will go to the San Francisco consulate near where I live and hopefully I won't need to be millionaire. LOL. Thanks Paul.😂
