The scooter would be the escape pod. You can't fight anything, you'll be scared from the moment you get on until you get off. Only use in case of emergencies...
@@PeterKoperdan Well, if something blows your ship up, you probably won't feel safe stuck in a defenseless, unarmored lifepod. While flying through space alone, vulnerable and not knowing if you'll survive until you reach safety. That's why you'd be scared.
@@Roy_Godiksen 1. in the context of a sci-fi emergency: What if you were running from an Alien monster? 2. in the real world: Why are you afraid of scooters? Most people feel intimidated by big bikes..
You forgot about vintage ;) 1)Are are you mechanicly inclined 2)Are you willing to take the chance that your bike won't run tomorrow even though it ran amazing today? 3) How much time do you want to spend wrenching vs riding?
The problem is that there is no compromise bike. The singular unicorn motorcycles simply DOES NOT EXIST. After realising this it's easy. Just get what you feel like will make you happiest and go from there
I'm loving my Yamaha FJ-09, but now that I've seen your video I feel like it needs an upgrade to the weapons system. Does anyone make an ion cannon for the FJ-09?
Very good comapro.. As you rightly said in the end , its true. Start with what you want to do NOW and once you are on the road with something...it will evolve....Right?
It's really true. You don't have to land on the perfect bike the first time. Get one that you think is cool and go from there. The kind of riding I thought I'd love when I started is nothing like the kind of riding I love to do now.
Just found this from back in the day. Fabulous comparisons between the bike types and sci fi . Well done super video Dave. Well done, ride safe and ride well.🤓
Great video! I happen to own the world's greatest UJM, the Honda CB750 Nighthawk from 1993. Fast, reliable, next to no maintenance and could jump on it tomorrow and drive it across the country. I love the middle weights for lower weight, great power, and sport touring ended up being my cup of tea. If I buy new, it would be the Yamaha FJ09 with bags...fill the tank and hit the horizon!
Loved this cross-over, thanks for this fun vid!. Dual-Sport FTW IMO , though I admit to having a soft spot for the maxi scooters like the 650 Burgman, T-Maxes and Silverwing's. That low center of gravity and ability to store a mountain of stuff is convenient as heck for a commuter.
Great video. I was ready to look down my nose at what would surely be 9 minutes of inaccuracies from someone who obviously couldn’t know what they are talking about, but I ended up getting out geeked, especially when you took a few trips into the video game world. The only thing I could find to be the least bit petty about was calling the Harley Street model a cruiser. Lol. Thanks for this.
Lol, very nice video 😃 I am not all that sure I am riding a millennium falcon, but i like the idea nevertheless (so you most probably even got it right)😂
I agree with everything except the placement of naked bikes. I think the graph makes them look a lot less sporty than they really are. With the 800-1000cc modern nakeds you get about 100-130hp which is plenty for the streets and because of the wide handlebars I find them alot more agile and flickable than a sport bike. In fact I'd say they are the sport bike of the streets. I dont think they have much in common with the UJM that you grouped them with except for similar looks.
I can't imagine needing sci-fi to describe bikes at all! But I started riding in '77. My SV1000S has been referred to as a space shuttle but I don't see it. Still waiting on my blasters, no matter what I ride though!
@@CanyonChasers I had to go on their website. Actually matches the Duke and I had to order an Orange Milano immediately, including the orange leather seats (Yellow was an option too). Downside it will only be delivered in a 1/2 century. As for the bike I have it since June (previous was Brutale 1090RR) and I so love it that I'm commuting (130ish km) despite having a cie car (Merc so not bad). And it's winter in EU. Finally thanks for the videos. I thought I wasn't that bad and I discover I have plenty of way of improvement :)
I feel like my FZ09 should've been in that category too, after all the XSR is just the FZ wearing a suit. And it's definitely sportier than plain UJMs.
Klr650 more like either Klingon Bird of Prey or intrepid class Voyager. Both can warp thru space, freeways, dirt roads, atmospheric flight. Also more Klingon with cloaking device because can hide from speeding tickets more easily as it’s not fast at acceleration, top end, or wheelies😂. Also like Bird of prey, customizable with lots of aftermarket parts. Look at bridge interior of Star Trek 3 vs 4. Revzilla was shipping lots of after market made Klingon parts….made by greedy ferengi’s though. Thus it most likely voided warranty when flying thru thunderstorm and sank though😂
Good video. But you forgot the ship from. The Last Starfighter. 😀😀 Maybe the Super Tenere for that one. A big go everywhere workhorse. Thanks for the video.
What about Talyn or Moya from Farscape?? Would a Maxi Scooter such as Suzuki Burgman, Yamaha Majesty, Honda Silverwing, Yamaha Tmax, be their equivalents???
Have been pretty set on in a Ducati Monster but not totally convinced. Now I am; I always wanted a Firefly of my own!! Seriously though, great and simple breakdown of styles even if the comparisons are more fun than useful. You guys are always a great resource for riders of all stripes. Thanks!
I always seen motorcycles akin to aeroplanes. My Honda VTX1300S(R) is something like a Boeing 747. Aged look but still dependable. I did think my bike as a powered glider because it's has not much electronics and limited top speed. Honda Goldwing is like Airbus with all that buttons and technology and sports bikes are like fighter jets. Fast and nimble. I can't think science fiction because that genre is too broad for me. I haven't seen Firefly, so I'm sorry that I can't agree or disagree.
I loved your spaceship comparison. But I'm not a gamer so a couple of them where lost on me. I do disagree with one classification. The new Goldwing 2018 and newer are more of a sport tourer than the GL1800 it the much older 82 GL1100 I'm refurbing now. This opinion comes from studying and listen rider who have or had both of the pre 2018 and 2018+ Goldwings. Touring is what I eventually want to do. See my comments on your latest video about handling curves. Thanks.
I can't help but think you got the retro caff racer wrong. They're generally lightened go-faster versions of the 'standard' bike. That was the original idea, take a standard bike and turn it into a race bike. There's a clue in the name. Lighter and more agile.
Funny thing as I was just tried to explain different type of bikes there are mostly to a friend who is getting into riding. Touché with the nerdy science fiction references which makes it easier :P
I learned from a standard motorcycle manual transmission at a young age but due to the availability of a semi-automatic underbone asian motorbikes, I frequently ride it. That was then. Until I bought my first bike which was a standard Honda CB. But because of my love of some little dust adventures, I got myself a dual-purpose Honda XR. I still keep both bikes now with a little addition to the squad, the iconic Honda Cub as my project bike. ;-)
I had to watch this vid twice because I thought I was dreaming the first time round. Best vid on bikes I've watched for.... ohhhh.... ok.... best vid I've watched! Period! 😀👍👌
The answer to 'which bike is right' is: several bikes surely! One to do your favourite type of riding, (touring, faster corners, dirt, whatever, you keep it in top condition for whenever you get to ride in your style. Then; an old piece of crap to commute on or just ride to shake the cob-webs out on a sunny day, thrash on the back road or paddocks, etc. it is old and ugly or newish and cheap to run, but it feeds the bike addition at short notice and keep you from wasting those expensive sports tyres riding up and down the same boring highway. Finally a precious joy to own, ride it on special occasions bike - new or old, fast or slow, whatever but something you like to get out on and grin just hearing the motor running.. You would cry if you dropped it! Panic of it didn't start, keep it until the day you die. If you can have all three types you might just get close to being satisfied...almost.
Hypertouring? That's not at thing... you're trying to make a new thing ;-). The bikes you put in that category are generally considered ADV... or if that's not niche enough Sport ADV. Would be sport touring but extra suspension and lighter weight gives them better handling and light ADV chops (think dirt roads not offroad). I'd also put the Superbikes much closer to the Sumo's in both weight and agility (most sumo's are closer to 400lbs than 200lbs)... the sport touring closer to the UJM in weight and the Sport ADV at about the same weight as the UJM's (which are heavier than they look generally). Overall the list is good and nicely geeked out.
yea that one was a bit home-cooked. The Multistrada is an adventure bike, albeit one that is heavily tuned for street use and favors power and balance over offroady nimbleness - a bit like the bigger BMW GS bikes. They are still adv bikes nonetheless.
We have more MTS' in our garages than any other bike - none of us take them off the asphalt. It's like the Cayenne of the SUV world, where the GS would be more like the 4Runner TRD Pro. Yeah, the MTS may look like an SUV, but it's not really. It's far too delicate and breakable for real-off road duty while the GS is pretty indestructible by comparison.
@@CanyonChasers I basically agree with that... and I bought the Multi because I didn't see myself putting the miles on offroad (hence the 'ADV Sport'). I have a bit under 50k miles on my 15S... about 10-15% has been dirt roads (no real 'offroad'). Doesn't sound like much until you consider it's at least a few thousand miles... and other than a couple flats they've been uneventful. IMO the Multi is modestly capable off tarmac... reliability isn't the issue (In our riding group the one LC GS has left its rider stranded twice, the Multi's have had minor issues but no strandings). IMO its more a geometry problem, small front tire and sportbike fork geometry make the bike a handfull in soft stuff. On firm dirt or well built stone the Multi does fine, though the GS is still a lot more comfortable in that ecosystem. It's also a capability thing too... the Multi is so much fun on tarmac that it's kindof a shame to put it on dirt where it's not as comfortable. I've complete faith in the bikes ability to do it though (including doing it in the middle of nowhere 2000 miles from home with a 30 day touring load: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EK4rke5_1XE.html )
The whole underwear segment had me laughing! Awesome idea, and now I have more scifi to check out. Never heard of 'Dark Matter'. Keep up the great work!
@@CanyonChasers "Hi Emperor, my name is Five, and I'm here to rescue you!" said the green-haired teenage girl with a beaming smile. ROFLMFAO! OMG, I laughed so hard, I cried!
Yeah, it was kinda' hard figuring out where to draw the circles. You know. We were juggling which cool ships to talk about too. :) If you read the comments, some guys are upset that the Versys didn't get it's own category, and others are bothered because they argue that Hyper-Touring bikes are just ADV bikes. But more fun; which spaceship would a super-naked be do you think? We really wanted to include Star Lord's Milano, but couldn't find a good place for it.
I purchased a pair of riding jeans that were Kevlar lined and the pockets in the knees and then the hips that hold the armor tend to move around alot making me believe that in a crash they're not going to stay in place and protect those areas can you recommend something when I don't look like a racer that I could wear on the street street.
i like the design of sport bike, but i need a bike that can go anywhere like adv, it would be upsetting to be on sportbike and wanting to take some wild trail to enjoy rare nature and feeling trapped
What category would you put the Indian Scout and Scout Sixty (not the bobber)? I love the look of these, but I’m a brand new rider. I would love to get your thoughts on which is best for me. I’m 6’3” 250-255lbs and want something that will help me build confidence and keep for a few years.
Oh, oh, the Bergman! It's one of those big S-F freighters like in "Alien", purpose-built and you never know what you're gonna find in all that storage space.
I think the roads in your proximity and what your buddies ride are big factors in chosing the type of bike. You don't want small racebike if you live in flat Florida, you don't want pure racebike if you don't have a race track in 2h travel diameter. If all your buddies ride cruisers, don't buy a supermoto because you'll ride alone then etc.
Great video, however, I found the graph pretty confusing. Is the weight axis increasing or decreasing from left to right? How come criuser is on the left and hyper tour is on the right of the standard, they both seem heavier? Also how come cheaper is above on the agility scale?
Cruisers are almost always exceedingly heavy. Even a little one, like a Sportster will can weigh in close to 600lbs, where a Multistrada is about 450. Thankfully, Honda has come in with their Rebel line and they are light and a lot more fun to ride because of it.
I would have thought that with all the supposed oil leaks and repairs and modifications you can do to a Harley that all Harley's would be considered to be like the Millennium Falcon since it's always breaking down and has a lot of modifications to it
Am I the only one who knows EXACTLY what kind of bike I want, but that bike doesn't exist or is incredibly hard to come by? It's so frustrating to see all these great options, but I always find myself going "skip, next.. skip, next.. skip". Been riding for about 4 years now, still looking for that one true love to present itself :I
@@CanyonChasers I did take the SuperSport into consideration! Although the design is not quite my cup of tea in some areas, and I question the reliability and maintenance costs.. But it's a close one. I'd probably go up to the 749 with the more modern engine and frame, but also added weight. I know, I'm a picky one lol
