Which Multi Doctor Story Is The Best? 

Has to be the Three Doctors. Everything about this story is perfect to me. It's got a great villain in Omega, it's funny, exciting has great acting from Patrick and Jon (and even William gets some moments) and I can watch this story over and over again without being bored. It always reminds me of the best childhood party memories, and I always love this one. I do enjoy the Two Doctors a ton as well though.

It's even fun to watch Troughton and Pertwee in the outtakes, such as when Troughton is trying to offer Pertwee a jelly baby.

Five Doctors for me...I have such nostalgia for that episode! Its a good fun run-around.

Definitely should include Time clash - proper fan service and love from son in law Seeing Day of the Doctor in a sold out cinema was phenomenal- it made the top 5 box office for the week. Apparently we got the 2 doctors because Troughton so much enjoyed revisiting the role in the 5 doctors.

11, 10 and war doctor's dynamic is like del boy, Rodney's and uncle Albert's in only fools and horses. You only needed war doctor to do 'during the war.'

The Two Doctors for me I love it.

Back in May, lockdown was really getting me down, so I rewatched The Three Doctors and I bloody loved it and really cheered me up. My favourite is either that, or Day Of The Doctor. I also don’t mind Twice Upon A Time (apart from the sexist stuff)

I'm sure other people will have pointed this out to you, but TIME CRASH is the TV multi-Doctor story that you missed. I would also recommend Big Finish's multi-Doctor stories, particularly the 50th Anniversary story LIGHT AT THE END. A new one is due out this month.

The three doctors is fantastic just for Hartnell's attitude towards the other doctor's.

I’m VERY old. I saw most of Tom Baker’s era on 1st transmission and have seen almost, but not quite, all of the classic stories that still exist. For all that though, seeing Day of the Doctor in a packed cinema with my (them) 7yr old son is one of the highlights of my life. I still can’t hear “you know, I think you really might” without welling up. But Wingy is right - Night of the Doctor really should have been its pre-title scene. That would have been amazing.

The Three Doctors or Day of the Doctor for me, also Twice upon a Time is underrated.

For me, it's a toss up between Arc of Infinity and The Fires of Pompeii

2 Doctors is sort of a guilty pleasure for me, but I don't feel guilty about liking it.

1. Honestly, I honestly think the most realistic portrayal of the Doctor meeting another version of themselves is Time Crash. I've no idea WHY, but that one feels the most right. 2. I think "The Two Doctors" is a great idea, but is pretty bloody awful in practice. 3. Day of the Doctor is alright, but I think it holds up as well as it did on first viewing. Also, Tennant gets a little bit of a character assassination in how thick the Tenth Doctor is at points. 4. Twice upon a Time is bloody pointless. I get that there needed to be a Christmas episode, but it would have been better if had just rolled straight from "The Doctor Falls" to "The Woman who Fell to Earth".

You are my hero, of the classic multi Doctor Who stories not only,( along with Varos) is the Two Doctors my fav sixth Doctor Who story its my favourite classic meet up up story. I love the slightly sick and dark humour, the Spain location is wonderful. The only problem is the tall egg heads, plus the make up is worse than the Time Warrior what gives. Great to have Jamie back too.

I think all the multi doctor stories are at least good, but I'd say two doctor's is the weakest. Five doctors was the first classic I ever watch so it does hold a special place in my heart. Twice upon a time I feel is underrated and it does make me laugh despite the inaccurate portrayal of the first doctor's character in the writing. The three doctors is so much fun to watch and I love the fact Pertwee, Troughton and the Brig are all together. My favourite has to be Day of the Doctor though. Not only does it have huge implications for the future of the show (until 2020) but it's just a really interesting story to me and it doesn't feel so much like a gimmick. It's not perfect but it's just mint

I think which multi-Doctor story was your favourite depends entirely upon which one you experienced at the time. For me, they're events first stories second. Day of the Doctor was my favourite because I grew up with 10 and 11, they were my Doctors. So when I rewatch it I'm always going to have that nostalgia. Whereas I watch one of the others and while I think they're good I don't quite have that connection to them. Though I also love exhausted supplies, the fan audio where 9 and 12 meet, it's so impressive.

The Three Doctors, definitely. Pertwee and Troughton are amazing together. I very much enjoy Tennant and Smith, but they're too similar to have the kind of chemistry that the prior two had. (Not that they should have the same chemistry, by any means.) The Three Doctors has my favorite TARDIS reaction with Sgt. Benton, and it has our first big look into Time Lord history. Omega is a phenomenal villain with screen presence that stands up to the two Doctors, and that is no small feat. I only started watching the show a couple of months before the 50th, and Netflix only had a few Classic stories. I saw Aztecs, Mind Robber, and Spearhead, and enjoyed each more than the last, but this was the story that made me a lifelong fan. It was the first Doctor Who DVD I ever bought, and it's my favorite story of all time.

My reaction to the 5 Doctors was the same. I had only seen episodes of Tom and Peter, so I was so pumped for it. I’m still angry about the whole stuck in a vortex. I think that’s why Day of the Doctor is my favorite. It’s got Tom for real instead of scenes from Shada. When I heard that voice I almost lost it.

I think the most frustrating thing about "Twice Upon A Time" is that it seriously steals some thunder from "World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls." That story is one of the best regeneration stories, perhaps just behind "The War Games" and "The Caves of Androzani", that now isn't technically a regeneration story because it stops short of Twelve regenerating. The thing is that the story would be just as satisfying if it ended with Twelve's regeneration. It would honestly be so easy to edit the ending of "Twice Upon A Time" onto "The Doctor Falls" and have it work just as well, if not better. Then again, that was a problem I had consistently throughout Moffat's run, even from when he started. He can never just let an arc or a character end. He has to round out their arc and then have a separate arc dedicated to them accepting that their arc is over. River has two or three different exits. Amy and Rory leave and then come back just to leave again. Eleven has his "Deep Breath" cameo. Twelve has a brilliant exit and then "Twice Upon A Time" only exists to fulfill the sheer obligation of the Christmas specials. Clara, of course. It's as if Moffat underestimates his audience's ability to accept that his characters have bowed out and feels the need to create "comfort episodes" just to break the news more easily.

I actually don't have a problem with Tom being the only classic Dr to make a cameo in Day of the Doctor. It's not favoritism on Moffat's part, his favorite Doctor is Davison I believe. It's just recognition of how much cultural impact Tom's Doctor had. Even if he's not your favourite you've got to admit he's probably the most iconic.

The five doctors was the first classic series episode i watched so it has a special place. But the three doctors is my favourite because you see Patrick Troughton playing the recorder in colour!

I will defend the Time War part from Day of the Doctor a bit. All of the build-up that we had for it was very high concept and any visualization of that could never live up to expectations. The version of the war that we got in Day of the Doctor was a very brief glimpse of a small portion from the very end of the war, to avoid trying (and failing) to depict all of the madness that had been mentioned before. Personally, my favourite depiction of the Time War comes from the short little piece that RTD wrote called Doctor Who and the Time War. It is some really high concept sci fi goodness that would translate horribly to a visual medium. Much in the same way people say Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror is impossible to film, so is the Time War. Moffat knew that and so he showed us very little of it, for that reason. We’d all have been absolutely pissed if we had a story set (at least partially) in the Time War, without showing it. The version we got manages to show us a glimpse of it without damaging the picture of it that had been built in out heads throughout the Davies era.

The three doctors is my favourite. It just seems to understand that the appeal of this kind of story is the interaction and the first three docs are such different personalities, it just works plus the main story hss a massive enough threat to warrant anniversary status.

I think for me, TDOTD is the best Multi-Doctor story. The only thing I would change is to replace the Zygon stuff with more Time War related things, and maybe bring in The 8th Doctor too.

I have a soft spot for Day of the Doctor as it was the first one I saw in an actual theater. That being said, the Big Finish audio multi-doctor stories need to be mentioned. They're all pretty good.

I think with the Day of the Doctor people seriously understate the challenge faced by Moffat. It was pretty much an impossible assignment, with disappointment as the only conceivable outcome. Given all that, and the time pressures that were involved, it's pretty remarkable. And for me, I think back to how it felt on first airing and it worked.

Your nostalgia for Day of the Doctor is the same I have for The Five Doctors. For me that's the definitive multi-Doctor story, closely followed by The Three Doctors, It's sheer candy.

I was thinking about this topic the other night while out for a walk (as you do), and decided that they're all my favourite. EDIT: Now I've watched the video, I realise I forgot about Dimensions in Time and Twice Upon A Time. I'm downgrading both of those to non-fave status.

They all should have figured it out, except for the 5th, since he was Borusa's prisoner. Kind of like how the 2nd and the 6th Doctor were able to figure each other's plans before saying anything to each other, or how they shared certain opinions about people and species in, the Two Doctors. Robert Holmes always was a better scriptwriter than Terrace Dicks.

Three Doctors i have gone back to and watched the most. Pertwee and troughton are just so great together.

a lot of people complain about how day of the doctor doesn't have enough classic stuff but I don't get how they could've had more classic stuff in it, it's not like they could get a classic doctor bc they're all noticeably much older and might not have wanted to return

Dimensions in Time without a shadow of a doubt, mainly for nostalgia. I was 10 and had gotten into Doctor Who at the beginning of the year with the BBC2 repeats, so this was my first time seeing brand new Who as it aired. BBC1 was halfway through airing Planet of the Daleks with those little 5min shorts on before it, 30 Years in the Tardis was a few days away, these were exciting times for a kid who still had so much more to discover about the show. As an adult, I understand how it must have been disappointing for many fans, but for me at the time it was top drawer, a fun fast adventure that made me hungry for more Who. I must have re-watched it hundreds of times. And the EastEnders thing pretty much went over my head as I’d never watched it in my life!

I think the fact that Twice Upon a Time was a last minute script is clear. He just threw everything at it because he knew this was his last episode, infact it came AFTER his last, so it wasn't months in planning like others. I do agree that The Two Doctors is great

I can't decide between three doctors and five doctors. The only disappointing thing about the five doctors was tom bakers absence. His big ego once again which a lot of people like john levene called him out on. Not wanting to share the screen with the other doctors. I do think the episode would have been better if robert holmes wrote it. But what terrence dicks did was pretty great. Especially with all the things he had to cram into the episode im surprised it worked as well as it did.

Five Doctors for me - has so many moments I love 😊🤩 But, you forgot; that episode of the Chase with the uncanny duplicate 1st Dr 😉 and also; Time Crash 👍🏻

Dimensions in Time. Nothing else comes close. Well except for Curse of the Fatal death of course. (DotD + the Five-ish Doctors for me will always be special, and Twice Upon a Time will always be great for me)

Journey’s End was definitely a multi-Doctor story as well. There was the meta-crisis human clone of the tenth doctor produced by the Doctor’s eleventh (and penultimate) regeneration energy. And also the “Doctor Donna” hybrid, who received part of the Doctor (of his mind at least). Call it the “Two and a Half Doctors” if you will. The duo The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End is one of my all-time favourite stories. So I’ll have to put it in a tie for top spot with The Three Doctors.

The Three Doctors for me. It's a great Pertwee story, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee both being in it at the same time works really well and smoothly. The Unit family are fun as always. Other than the gel guard design it's really good. I think the Two Doctors is overlooked a little bit but 2 turning into an Androgum doesn't quite work for me, and the Sontarans are really not dealt with very well. It's a really good production though.

The Five Doctors was my favorite, with the Three Doctors a close second. Twice Upon a Time is last.

I agree with you for the most part. In "Twice upon a time", I didn't like the way the first Doctor was portrayed either, but Moffat has claimed that all of his controversial lines were copied from lines originally spoken by William Hartnell. Even if so, he didn't have to pick out those lines to copy, but apparently he thought the result amusing.

Two things… was disappointed that Throughton and Pertwee have very little to no interaction with Susan- it’s the only time they see her again and it’s like en. Secondly, in the Two Doctors- Collin’s moment is genuine and emphasizes the secret missions the Time Lords sent The Second Doctor to do. Remember, it’s implied that the Time Lords wiped his memories of the secret missions during the exile process- so The Sixth Doctor wouldn’t remember having ever had a recall device. My fav is the Two Doctors for the interaction between the Doctors and both the Doctor interacting with Jamie (who accepts the situation as he accepts the Doctor as a Wizard) & and the dynamic with the Sixth Doctor, Peri, and Jamie. Jamie proves that that Doctor and Peri needed a strong third in the Tardis. The first two flowed more harmonically.

The Day of the Doctor has a massive flaw. The plot of the whole story is that three Doctors together are planning on wiping out their own species until Clara says "No, you're better than that, think of something else", and then they go "Oh, yeah, we should probably think of something else". It's a monumentally stupid contrivance which makes the Doctor look so dense that three of him together didn't think that they might be able to come up with a better plan than killing their entire race, but Clara the insufferable know-it-all is the smart one who thinks "wait, genocide BAD!".

For me it wud be the three doctors, not a fantastic story but since it has my 2 fave doctors of all time (troughton and pertwee) on great form, and the brig, yep its my fave

Do the Watcher and the Valeyard count as Doctors? If so, Logopolis and The Trial Of A Time Lord should be added to this. Also there is the bit where the Pertwee Doctor and Jo meet themselves in Day of the Daleks.

What about Jodie Whitaker and that other woman who was retconned in as an older Doctor, obviously that's the best one. No doubt.

I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but my fave is The Two Doctors. I love the music, the campy Androgums, 6, 2, Peri and Jamie together. It’s a lovely story, and a good critique on meat eating.

The three doctors was the first Pertwee story and I really like Omega, but why have jelly models? Why not ice warriors, chumblies, WOTAN etc? Edit: I wish we had 5 minutes of more Hartnell. I feel like the two doctors could have been the 30th anniversary, it was possibly replaced by the first Sontarans a story about a Sontaran-Rutan war and I think the budget was snatched. I'm not a big Day of the Doctor guy, it took me until the third watch to know what was going on. Twice upon a time is an episode that I'm grateful for, because Chibs didn't want to start with a Christmas Special, there's a not my doctor theory that Chibs decided to co-write this story in top-secret which is why it contains sexist lines and to be fair, you had one doctor who was going to experience regeneration for the very first time(in his head) and so it was like Moffat knew the timeless children and decided to say 'before I go, remember why I included the first doctor before you know what Chibnall is cooking for you.'

I'll go for The Two Doctors, I'm also a fan of season 22, some of the dark themes just elevate it up a notch. A pity the show was infantilised afterwards.

My favourite multi doctor story is Light at the End, which was the Big Finish 50th anniversary special. And the reason is Big Finish is so much better than New Who and even, I would say, rivals Classic Who

I feel like Twice Upon a Time miss its mark. It was the last Christmas special of Doctor Who and missed the opportunity to done a "It's a Wonderful Life" story with The Two Doctors.
