@@Kyle-bi7df Ozzie has been over 25 years of draft mgmt, handing off to edc. They trade down alot, rarely up except for lamar, they take the best player available, and they feast on comp picks. 2018 draft was just standard procedure. Which u just started paying attention to. @@Kyle-bi7df there wasnt any luck around getting lamar when we did, they wanted him the entire time and took him precisely when they knew they needed to. they took hayden hurst before him in that same draft, and traded back for even that pick, originally the ravens 1st rounder in 2018 was in the teens. ozzie's greatest strength as a drafter was playing the field and knowing exactly when he needed to pick the guys he wanted

Love didn't get the starting job until year 4, same as Rodgers. He started one game in 2021 at KC when Rodgers was out with COVID.

100% correct. He probably thought Love sat for only 2 years because he never saw the field or threw a pass his rookie year. So if you were to luck up his stats online it would probably exclude his rookie season since he never took the field.

So, as a Packers fan, I’m going to push back on the “Packers are the best at drafting in the 1st round narrative.” Don’t get me wrong. We draft pretty well, and most importantly, we avoid busts and wastes of major draft capital (i.e. Mitchell Trubisky, Trey Lance, Bryce Young). But we are not getting consistent Pro Bowlers in the 1st round. That is something the Dallas Cowboys have mastered. Their list of recent 1st-round draft picks reads like a Pro Bowl roster. I think where the Packers really excel is at drafting in the 2nd round and later. So many impact players in the later rounds: Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, David Bakhtiari, Micah Hyde, Davante Adams, Aaron Jones, Elgton Jenkins, Romeo Doubs, Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, Jayden Reed, Tucker Kraft, Dontayvion Wicks, and Carrington Valentine.
@THADDEUSJAMIESON
@THADDEUSJAMIESON 12 дней назад
Very True! If you look at the picks before Gutekunst stepped in, the first round was oftentimes pretty bad except for 2009. Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Donald Driver, and Greg Jennings were all second round or later picks. Sterling Sharpe was the last great first round wide receiver for the Packers.

Big thing for the Chargers the past 10 years was that Telesco drafted really well in the first round but was absolutely bootycheecks at drafting in the mid and later rounds. This resulted in top heavy teams, with plenty of stars but no quality depth. Few good role players. Nobody that could step up in a pinch for an injured star. This is why the Chargers have been the off-season champs but nothing of value Hope things will be different going forward ⚡⚡

I was talking to my friend from ATL on the draft, and my hype cycle since high school for the Hawks draft has been primarily in rounds 3-5 as they have unearthed impactful players and valuable depth for a decade plus. Nailing those picks have kept them in playoff reach even in their leaner years. Very excited to see the guys they picked up in camp this year.

As a Panthers fan, whats crazy is if you expand this data since realignment, you would see that the Panthers in about 20 years have only 1 1st round draft bust not due to injury (Vernon Butler). When Hurney was here you know when he picked 1st round the player at minimum was gonna a a solid multi year starter, often than not make a least 1 pro bowl, and just recently made the HOF (Peppers) Dudes like Gross, Gamble, Davis, D-lo, Beason, J-Stew were all major contributors during the John Fox era, and guys like Newton, Kucehly, Star, Thompson, and McCaffery where a major part of the Rivera era, and we though that guys like Moore, and Burns would be part of this era with Brown, Horn (when healthy) and Icky, but sadly with McCaffery we traded the . Even Gettleman wasn't that bad in the 1st round, Benjamin was good in Carolina.

I think another thing that needs to be taken into account is how successful an organization is at finding talent OUTSIDE of round one. One elite player isn’t going to win you ball games unless it’s Patrick Mahomes, but even then, a team like the Chiefs win so much because they find gems in later rounds, too - like Pacheco in Round 7 or Creed Humphrey in the 2nd and Trey Smith in the 6th.

The question isn't which player do you want on your team for 4 years, the question is which player do you want to offer a 4 year contract (at the specific pick valuation). When you see these flashy picks in the first round, it's more about talent acquisition and hope for potential. The more important decision is how confident are you that this player will perform at or above the value of the pick and are you willing to give him a fully guaranteed 4 year contract.

I can see why the Steelers were left out, missing on their QB, but Shazier in 2014, Dupree in 2015(admittedly slow start but still became solid), TJ watt in 2019(arguably best defender in league imho, only one other player has more sacks in their first 100 games than TJ, and that is legendary Reggie White), Harris in 2021 (three striaght 1k seasons to start career), and Broderick Jones 2023 who will start on the o-line this year, makes for a solid set of picks. Granted they didnt have a 2020 pick due to the trade for Minkah Fitzpatrick, but ya that worked out just like having one.

The difference between the Panthers and the likes of the Chiefs, Bills and Ravens is down solely on poor coaching and poor ownership. They are the best at filling the NEED of each position but fail to make progress once they’re drafted. The 3 teams I mentioned not only have better coaching but have QB’s that are consistent. Notice how the Panthers drafted a different position between 2017-2023

Drafting isn’t the problem. Development is actually the bigger issue. In addition too often what is considered common sense is actually opposed to what has been well documented. Outside of the QB it has been well documented the elite teams in the NFL have a top notch OL with depth and a elite SR/TE as your primary receiving target. Yet for some reason its pretty much expected that 3 WR’s will be picked in the top 10 despite the fact you have a generational TE receiving prospect and one of the best OL classes. So good luck.

There simply isn't a GM on the hot seat that has to prove in a couple of years he is worth the position by winning lots of games and show results. The security these two franchises have because they can always think long term is a big reason they're at the top of this list

I'm starting to believe 99% of the issue is the teams management and factors like location and of course coaching and money. Like some of these players that are like hof caliber on a good team probably would get kicked out on a bad team after 3 years and blamed for all their issues when they're too cheap to hire an actual coach who's coached anything before or draft/pick up linemen or a legit reciever. And there's so many what if players that just went to shitty situations and flamed out, like guys who had all of it but no matter what they did it was futile

I think the flaw with the pff article is that they were specifically looking at the quantity of first round accolades instead of individual draft stats. Carolina for instance probably made the list because they have been a mediocre team at best for so long that they have constantly gotten higher first round picks which are more likely to make accolades, along with this, the same argument of mahomes to the chiefs can be made about if stroud went to carolina, like stroud had two bonefied pro bowl level wide outs in dell and collins, a pretty good tight end in shultz, and singletery who had a breakout year. Personally i dont think Stroud would have been nearly as good if hes having to pass the ball to adam thielan

Can you really argue the Ravens should be in the top five of this list when the number one issue with their roster is one that they have spent four first round picks on? In the last 10 years, they have spent four first round picks on wide receiver and tight end, and yet every single year the argument is that the Ravens don't have enough talent at pass catcher.

"Cheap owners" aren't a factor one can claim in regard to picking players from free agency or drafting. One, drafted players depending on the # of the pick already has a pay grade scale written in stone. Two, owners do not collect any of the unused salary cap that is not used for their team. Matter of fact, there is a floor that teams must spend each season of the allotted salary cap! Owners do keep money from parking, ticket sales, and concessions sold at their home games that is shared at a certain percentage with the away team!

Think about it: You’re a gm who was hired and maybe you aren’t extremely qualified or polished, you know you’re gonna get fired as the scapegoat if the team doesn’t improve. Do you take the hotshot qb, a high risk pick that has a small chance to improve your team drastically? Or do you take the reliable OT that will help the team eventually in the long term, but not have a huge immediate impact. You take the smart pick, you seal your own grave.

PFF itself is very flawed. The most important part of the draft are after round one. Round one are the obvious gems.

Chargers are a perfect example of the NFL being shaped by Day 2 and Day 3 draft picks. Chargers have done great in Round 1 and horrible in the later rounds, which has made them have terrible depth

The Packers aren't that great at first-round picks, but they are amazing at getting players in round 2 and later, especially more recently. Just in 2023 alone they got Luke Musgrave and Jayden Reed in the 2nd, Tucker Kraft in the 3rd, Dontayvion Wicks in the 5th, Karl Brooks in the 6th, and Carrington Valentine in the 7th, and all of them were major contributors last year. In 2022 they got Christian Watson in the 2nd, Sean Rhyan in the 3rd, Romeo Doubs and Zach Tom in the 4th, Kingsley Enagbare in the 5th, and Rasheed Walker in the 7th.

Hitting on late rounders is the real key to success outside of a qb
@Barista.Nathan

Here's the thing, though, the teams that you mentioned at the end, the chiefs, the bills, and the ravens, are famous most for their ability to find Value in the late rounds. You can't put teams that have drafted several busts in the top five, in KC and Buffalo, even if they have hit on their QB. Meanwhile, if the list was every player drafted in the first round outside of wide receiver, then yeah, the Ravens would be top of the list. That's not what has made them all so great. The inverse of Carolina being bad despite hitting early. Your team is made or broken by your ability to draft in the second, third, fourth, fifth rounds, and end up with quality players. The Chiefs can overcome CEH being a bust because they drafted Isaiah Pacheco in the 7th.

Eagles weren't mentioned here but they certainly have stepped up their game on draft night. If this study gets redone in 5 years they'll probably make the top 5

The Seahawks sucking at drafting in the first round but being among the best for everything below round 3 is the least surprising thing I’ve ever heard.
