If you're in the market for a new Nikon Full Frame FX Camera and you're not sure what the differences are, this video is for you. Even though Nikon has more than four full frame cameras on the market currently, I only consider these four to be the ones I would purchase new. The Nikon Z7, Z6, D850 and D5. The Nikon D750 which is a fantastic camera is on it's last legs and lacks some modern features. The Nikon Df, well, yea, that was DOA.

I got a D850 less than a week ago after spending days on end just comparing and weighing different options. It was a very difficult decision with all the great Nikons in the market right now and with the mirrorless market boom that we saw in 2018. Even though I agree that mirrorless is the future, but I thought that I’d still be more comfortable going with the D850. The Z6 especially seems like a great camera, but I decided to skip this generation and maybe the next before I jump into Nikon mirrorless. I am a hobbyist and I don’t make money out of photography, so to be an early adopter and taking risks and dealing with the shortcomings of a first generation mirrorless is a big risk for me. Had I bought one of the new cameras, and regretted my decision afterwards, I won’t have the ability to rectify it in a short amount of time, so I decided to go with the true and tested D850. Thanks for the excellent reviews and videos Jared.

I got my D850 in Jan. last year. Back then the Z6/7 were no option, but anticipated. I chose to go with the D850 instead of waiting, because I knew: Nikon (or Canon) will have a hard time to compete with what Sony does and their first steps will - although not childish - be still in need for evolution. Now with both of them out, I am not sorry for going D850! Since I have no use in Video (I still do TimeLapse), the D850 is the more reliable solution. She does so many things right and combines almost everything I can wish for. Almost? Well, EVF and IBIS are things to concider. They are fantastic to have and help you to get the shots you want. Switching from EVF to OVF was noticable for me, but actualy I got it working quite well. D850's light metering is good and the settings are quite flexible, giving me the results I want. Personaly, most of the time I shoot with: Aperture Priority, Easy Exposure Compensation On (mostly +1,3 or +1.7), Highlight-Metering, Auto ISO (set to 64 up to 6400) with minimum Shutter Speed set to faster (one over double the focal length). 90% that gets me good results without any other changes, just like that. Can't say I miss EVF for exposure too much - but sure for other features. Would I switch to a Z down the road? I would have to look at Z7Mk2 or Z7Mk3 first to decide that, because I already am quite happy with my D850. Also I am very disappointed with Nikons Lens Road Map, which means the body would have to be that much better to convince me. Nikon would have to fix issues like banding, card slots, battery grip, etc first in order to be on par with their D850. So for the moment, no, I'm not concidering it.

I do mostly landscape photography. What I like about the Z7 is the custom configurability of it’s controls and screen (vs. my D750). As a tool, it enables me to do capturing techniques like focus stacking and multi-exposures faster and easier. The EVF enables better focusing during low light sunrise/sunset situations ... like a night scope.

I'm a pro d850 shooter that was either going to get a second d850 as a backup, or jump into one of the mirrorless Z's, as I believe these types of cameras are the future. I thought and thought, and settled on a Z6, mostly because I do a lot of work in very low light and thought it would improve my work on the d850 in those particular situations. After a couple shoots I've learned a few things: 1. I was shooting the Z series totally comfortably on the first day. If you are a Nikon DSLR shooter, these cameras and their controls will feel incredibly familiar in your hands - bravo to Nikon for that. The EVF, something I've never liked before on other cameras, was incredibly crisp and wonderful to use. 2. On the Z6, in the very low light situations which I got the camera for, I was disappointed in the image quality compared to what I've become used to from the d850. Even at reasonable ISO's, the quality and amount of the noise is significantly worse. I was able to get images looking good in time, but with WAY more post production than the d850 images required. If I was comparing the performance in very low light between the d850 and the Z6, I would give the nod to the d850 for sure. 3. In more normal light situations, shooting the Z6 is a total blast, and the images were fantastic. But, as one would expect with the different sensors, they do not compete with the d850 when you look at fine detail. That said, when adjusting for the difference in camera cost, I think the Z6 will make many people incredibly happy. The images were great. 4. I thought I would just use it for low light, but I loved the ergonomics of shooting it so much I want to use it all the time, but for me the Z6 wasn't enough. I've realized that as a d850 snob, the Z6 doesn't have the chops for me to continue owning. So, tomorrow I'm taking it back and getting the Z7 - essentially identical sensor to the d850, with all the joy of shooting this small, wonderful to use, mirrorless package. Excited!

@jimmyhayes9588
@jimmyhayes9588 4 года назад
@@themondoshow Well, haven't taken it through a full shoot yet, but in all my test shots I've been thrilled with the resolution as compared to the Z6, both at lower and higher ISO's in studio conditions. At this early stage, it has probably surpassed my expectations in terms of picture quality. Knowing how much I liked the ergonomics form my spell with the ergonomically identical Z6, I remain very optimistic!!

@jimmyhayes9588 4 года назад
Nabarun Majumdar Unfortunately I don’t have the time to go too deep into it now, but I’m finding that I don’t ever reach for the Z7 over the 850. I still find that there is an unappealing quality to the very fine noise in the photos that I don’t get with my 850 - mostly in the color detail. It’s a nit picky thing, but it keeps me from using the camera much at all. At this point, I would say that Id much rather have bought a second 850. Since I’m using my f-mount lenses on the ftz adapter, there is not much benefit realized from the smaller size of the camera body.. The Z7 with my sigma art 1.4 50 is still a big heavy rig... I plan to try a Z mount lens or two and hopefully that improved the fine detail, because the only other thing i can think of that might be causing the slightly lackluster performance is the adapter... I’d say it could be my technique, but my photos on the 850 are tight.. hope that helps.

Jimmy Hayes thanks for the valuable information...i am myself primarily a wildlife and secondarily a landscape photographer, hence was is serious trouble opting for the 850 or the Z7 (z7 providing far better autofocus capabilities in theory but the noise and other factors are a big concern for me actually)

I've been using a Z7 for several months, and now a Z6, and I have barely used my D850/D810/D800 since. These Z-cameras are amazing, with features like in-body image stabilization (IBIS), edge-to-edge AF points, live image preview, live histogram in the viewfinder, silent shooting, extreme lens sharpness, a lack of chromatic aberrations, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi built in (with SmartPhone and PC/Mac connectivity), 10-bit 4K 4:2:2 N-Log video, and a much lighter weight. In fact, since I've been using the Nikon Z-cameras, my DSLRs now feel bloated and heavy. I agree with Jared on this one.

I was super exited to buy the Z 6, but ended up going with D500 and 200-500mm lens. I love everything the mirrorless Z 6 offers, but I realized I need a crop sensor to get that extra distance with my wildlife photography. A D5, or D850, would be good too, but their prices are still too expensive, even used.
@zedmouse
@zedmouse 2 года назад
You could have used the Z6 with a DX lens to get that crop. Plus the full frame censor in the Z6 allows you to crop in manually in post if you want to get that exact frame you want. Essentially it gives you more control over the end product. But it comes down to user preference a lot for sure. I have a Z6 and I do have one DX lens that I got brand new for roughly $300 and it zooms in like crazy far.

Excellent and comprehensive video for the rapidly changing camera technology. I sold my D5 and kept my D850 and I also purchased the Z6. I am a stills shooter and video is not an issue. The lack a a real battery grip is even more of an issue for me than only having one XQD card slot. Overall I think that Nikon did a pretty good job for the first generation mirrorless Z6. I have done some low light dance performances with my Z6 and I was pleasantly surprised. I used the low light AF function (-4 EV) with both auto area and dynamic area AF and I found this to be close to the low light auto focus capabilities of my DSLRs. Having image and exposure preview in the Z6 before the shot is a huge advantage over DSLRs for rapidly changing live theater lighting without using flash! I am now shooting my D850 when I am using a speedlight and my Z6 primarily for ambient light like live dance performances. Not having a full functioning battery grip is a big minus though. The D850 just works better for me when when I am shooting indoor and outdoor events with fill flash. One thing that Nikon simply must do is to issue periodic firmware updates for the Z6 and Z7 and to not rest on their laurels. Some of the weakness of their new mirrorless cameras can be fixed with firmware updates. I won't purchase another Nikon camera until they release the professional mirrorless camera (Z9?) with professional functionality and features. The D6 would be fine for professional sports photographers in the short term but not for the rest of us in the long term.
@TrueToad

I own all these cameras. With the Z I find myself fighting to acquire proper focus in many situations where my DSLRs nails it, this is the biggest drawback to the Z. I need a camera that focuses above anything else otherwise, all the bells and whistles of a mirrorless are mute. The video aspect is so clearly superior in the Z mirrorless I appreciate Nikon addressing that area. More than most I wished Nikon had "reinvented mirrorless" the sad truth is Nikon did not - Hype vs Vision. Jared, Thanks for your opinion and appreciate your enthusiasm - I been with Nikon since the Minolta XD11 days when I switched over and probably be with Nikon for life.

I own the D5, D850, D500 and have had the Z7. What he fails to mention is that with the D5 and D850 all of the controls are in the same location as previous high end Nikon pro level camera. The Z series cameras have different control layouts, so it is harder to switch between those cameras and the DSLR bodies and be able to 'just know' where the controls are without having to look. I can pick up my D5, D850, or D500 and it doesn't matter because all the controls are the same and in the same places. Not so for the Z series bodies. This makes it hard on long time Nikon users, like myself, who have memorized control locations and can just pick up a body and shoot. For action photographers, being able to change controls while still shooting and not having to stop to look, is a big deal.

Do you prefer the D5 or D850? I shoot motorsport and drag racing. Having a hard time picking what I want, I love the idea of the iso on the D5 and the ability to have extremely clear night shots (from low MP) but I’m worried the D850 will be too slow to catch some of the shots I want on raw files.

Did you ever make a video about which sensor format is best for certain situations? If you know which format is right for you it's just a matter of price, comparing specs and trying cameras at a store. But many people still think that a 35mm sensor is always an upgrade from an APS-C sensor even though the larger sensor might not always be the best choice. For example, I take photos of animals, usually they are a bit further away. I would never choose a camera with a 35mm sensor for that. I would sacrifice the crop factor for low light performance that I don't need. I would have to carry a much heavier 150-600mm lens to get the same reach as my 100-400mm lens. The D500 is still a pro camera even though it has "only" an APS-C sensor. But it doesn't have to hide behind the D5, it's just a camera for a different job.

They had my camera OVER a MONTH before sending me an estimate for a DIFFERENT repair and cleaning, NOT the recall work, it was ignored. So when I called, they tried to sell me an 80D and told me it was a FULL FRAME camera, which it is NOT. She was very pushy and cared more about selling me ANYthing (even tho she didnt know her product obviously) than repairing the camera I already have. Not to mention allowing my camera to sit OVER A MONTH before even READING the repair request enclosed. They tried to get out of doing the recall work, but would clean it and look at the focus issue that started with the 70/80 error message for a $250 charge. This is SUPPOSED to be a RECALL, NO CHARGE issue. Im disgusted with Canon. Theres NO possibility of speaking directly to the repair dept OR a Supervisor. Forget it. It does fill the buffer quite quickly though, and then stop taking pictures for what feels like an eternity as it empties, so it would be nice not to have that problem. The fact it's "only" 12 megapixels is fine too - the files aren't too big given I shoot all raw all the time, and so long as I compose decently it's not really lacking in detail, so I think it's a sweet spot. A better autofocus system and better high-ISO performance would be nice though. Other than that and the buffer issue I see no need to upgrade really, not for my purposes

Just bought the Z7 two days ago. Also have the D500 (my first camera) - I did a lot of sports photos! I won a Canon D6MII but it divided my on brands and therefore on lenses and after much study and deliberation, I opted for the Z7 with adapter ring. I opted for the Z7 because 1, I'm not a videographer but a portrait photog and I still have the D500 10fps. So now I have the megapixels, and the lighter weight and I think I'm going to be very happy for several years where I'm now set. Thank you for all you do!

Ergonomics?? I shoot with my left eye so with my DSLRs, I always have my face pressed up against the glass -( 'aka 'zoo station syndrome'.) The Z6 and Z7 have an extended viewfinder so my face clears the screen leaving room to adjust the joystick and controls. I'm loving it. I feel like, the argument for a D850 over a Z7 is pretty narrow. As in, I don’t see a lot of compelling reasons to choose a D850 over a Z7, there’s definitely reasons but they are fairly negligible in my opinion. What I find interesting is that the Z6 almost seems positioned as a little brother to the D5 in terms of megapixel count, low light, and FPS. And for people who may not quite need the functionality of the full blown D5, they can get a very similarly functioning package with much newer tech at a third of the cost with the Z6. Very interesting product positioning there.

I shot numerous weddings and other events, model portfolios with my first D3 backed up by a D700. Excellent pro cameras. My first $5,000 D3 bought in 2008 had a problem with the electronics burning out. Nikon offered to repair it for $680 last year. I was looking at a D5 until I found a low shutter count refurbished D3 for $1,300 at B&H and snapped it up. Now a week ago or so I took delivery of a Z7. After testing it, my DSLRs are resting quietly in back of my equipment closet. I can’t get much for them but they are taking up valuable space.

Ken Konard, The main reason I got a d3 was a budget option for 11fps shooting, the af is fast and hopefully I won’t have any issues, I got it for 500 dollars a month or 2 ago and it’s a lot better than my d3400 that I started off with, for a full frame camera, it’s pretty cheap, I run it with a 70-200 2.8 and I get some pretty good shots of of it

Jonathan klein - The D3 is a great pro camera and a great upgrade. Good luck in your photography and best wishes. By the way, try using the 3D autofocus tracking. It’s very popular with sports photographers and I used it about 90% of the time. It follows your target and keeps it in focus. If shooting a basketball game for instance, the focus point will follow a player even if another player gets in the way. I am retired now but still do a lot of shooting with friends.

Great video, as usual, Jared. I still shoot weddings and events with a D7100 and a D750, with great results. If people think they become a better photographer by just buying a new camera, then they are sadly mistaken. My take is, the camera manufacturers are tying to survive because of how much their market has shrunk due to cellphones. It's all about marketing and pushing out new products. I bet within a year or two there will be new versions of the Z series. As far as mirrorless goes, I own a LX100 ( there's now a mark II ) that I use for street photography and it's so good that I'm willing to wait and see what the Lumix S1 and S1r are like, if I even decide to go full frame mirrorless. Indications are that they will blow everything else on the market away....for a large price. Time will tell, I'm in no rush. I'm old school and still "hobby shoot" with a N65.

I bought the Nikon d850 at the time of putting in the first orders for the Z6 and 7 . Not so impressed with it ( yet) . But it took a long while to start really dialing in on the d810. The 810 is becoming one of my favorite cameras. I have the d500 and it instantly became my go to favorite camera. It’s so easy the use period. But the image quality of the d810 trumps it and the better I get a shooting with such high megapixel cameras the better I like them. So I think (for me ) I’ll have a learning curve with the d850. Higher megapixels is harder. I almost wish I’d gone with a Z-6 . Even with the long weight . I shoot a ton of video these days . I actually got the d850 for video and the picture quality is phenomenal. Better than the d810 “yes” . But the Z system is definitely better for this type of work. And I’ll be getting a z6 this year sometime I think. Was going to get the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema 4K . But the Nikon system is going to be better for me at the moment. The cost of setting up the BMPCC 4K is actually more than the Nikon and more of a workaround camera . But it will have the BlackMagic Raw vs ProRes Raw. That’s with the Atomos Ninja 5 recorder. The future for Nikon is good . Please Nikon push the Mirrorless system to its limits. Don’t sit back and not give the customer “all “ they want. Follow suit with Fujifilm and not Sony. Fujifilm builds cameras and supports their customers. Sony pushes the envelope on technology and functions. That’s bad ass . But Fujifilm makes the Cameras easy to use , high quality build, high quality lenses and firmware updates all the time to make the cameras function better as things change . Thanks Jarrod

Jared Polin Tony Northrop panned the Z6 yesterday. Major AF problems (have heard this from others), Auto WB problems. We all know it has one card slot (I’m a pro and no way). You have to use an adapter which makes your F glass even bigger. No grip available? No REALLY fast glass to take advantage of Z mount until 2020, except for 58mm Noct. I haven’t seen anything that says the images produced are any better than a D750. Better dynamic range? Shadow recovery? High ISO performance? Is there data?

I'd be stepping up from another Nikon, so the Z6 looks like a good bet. Time to start investing in the future with the lenses and the experience and so forth. Spending more for an older tech like the D5 or the D850 simply doesn't interest me. I like the greater emphasis on video, too, that's been a long time coming. I totally understand the value of waiting, but my next camera will be a Nikon mirrorless. incidentally, I've seen this same kind of discussion in so many contexts. "I'm not getting Windows XP, Windows 98 has all the bugs worked out and it will take years for them to iron out all the XP bugs." Or how about, "Nobody needs a SD card over 4 MB, and you're just risking so much more data with a 16 MB card. Just buy more 4 MB cards, it's proven technology." Within a year, nobody will admit to still owning a Nikon DSLR except a hobbyist poor-mouthing themselves, "Well, I'm not a pro, I just shoot flowers." We all know how this works out in the end, we've read this novel before.

Its 2022 and the D850 Sensor and AF is still as good as the Z7ii. Nikon and every other Company needs to sell new stuff and make you believe that you need the new tech. The D850 is still very very good. @@james5460 I can go out and buy a used Z8 ii or whatever in 7 years with used glass. Until then i buy my used f mount lenses and travel with the money I saved. But I changed how I think about Cameras some time ago. I used to get the newest and most shiny new Body, but now I am satisfied with what I have. My 350€ GR ii for example produces amazing pictures. Not the highest resolution ones but they don't need to look perfect to capture the story/the moment/a feeling. And I actually prefer the look of the old cameras sometimes. But that is just the style I like I guess. Nothing wrong to spend the money for the newest tech if that is what makes you happy and makes things easy for you. Sometimes the Newest Body, like the Z9 for example just gives you a better chance to capture the moment successfully. I get that.

Great video. A few things: 1. I would have loved to have seen the D750 up there just because it's kind of the DSLR equivalent of the Z6 (like the D850 is for the Z7). 2. A little explainer on what "extended high" mode on the Zs would have been helpful. If you want full AF and AE while shooting, you're limited to 5.5 FPS, so they're really nowhere near the D5 yet in terms of frame rate. 3. Re: the whole "one card slot" thing: something that a lot of people overlook is that if you're doing any kind of fast-paced shooting and you have to pause to let your buffer clear, you potentially lose shots. It doesn't seem as catastrophic as a card failure, but over time the lost shots stacks up. This isn't really a big deal for landscape, portraits, etc., but for sports, wildlife, and even potentially weddings, it's huge. By going with the much-quicker-writing XQD card (especially on the Z6 where you effectively can't outshoot the buffer), Nikon reduced the number of shots you'll lose gradually over time to a clogged buffer at the cost of increasing your risk of a catastrophic failure.

Yep, saying the Z6 is almost as fast as the D5 is very misleading, it's half as fast if it's lucky, and the keeper rate is probably even less than that if the AF is taxed...

I have shot SLR, DSLR, 110 pocket cameras, range finders, etc. I have done dark room work and now Photoshop and Lightroom. So for me, even switching to digital when I did was a huge step (helped along by the losers who stole all of my film gear). I finally decided on the Z7 and nothing else has come close to the amazement I have felt with what these mirrorless can do. The EVF and all the features that go with it are mind blowing. To be able to actually see your exposure and depth of field in the view finder is, to me, mind blowing. I agree with Jared, DSLRs will soon be historical pieces. I have a D850 and need a back up camera for weddings and I'm thinking about getting a Z6. It looks amazing and the video is awesome .

answer: none. The best thing that can happen to your photography is to stop upgrading and start making the best of what ever camera you have. Not adressed to pro like sport photographer, etc.

I own a D810 and a d500 and I still will in 10 years. I can get fantastic images in any situation with these two.We are long ago into diminishing returns and I also dislike mirrorless cameras which still feel like toys in the hand.

This was the best comp video I saw you make, explaining what camera gives you what you need in combo with what you shoot, much better then the "mark comp videos.

My D7200 works just fine...wish YOU JARED would do a (very many years late) review past the earlier one. I'm not a pro obviously, but the thing is still really good at what I can do with it and the pics I want to take: portraits, close-ups and landscapes .

That was awesome. Thank You. Also, I enjoyed the "brick" portion. I'm redesigning a course for the college I work at, and you helped me with my argument with why we should look at purchasing mirrorless cameras.

Hi, as per my observation, image quality of D810 is better than Z7 II. I used 70-200 f2.8 lens on both the bodies. F mount lens adapted on to Z mount with adapter. I strongly believe there is an image quality difference.

You're on a roll JP, another excellent and informative video. Bottom line is Nikon shooters have never had it better and there are no duds here. The D5 is a beast but the best camera for pro sports shooters and PJs in a war zone. Plenty of new tech in the Z series but not as robustly built as the D850. What will be the lifespan of a Z series body? On release the Z7 appears overpriced let's hope the MSRP drops over time. For now the Z6 is the sweet spot for Nikon mirrorless. Competitive price, great video and the perfect size for street photography.

The bottom line in determining which camera to buy is dictated by what you plan to do with it. if you are an amateur and have no aspirations of taking it any further than that, you could buy a mirrorless. Or, you could get a less expensive DSLR. Personally I would not give you a nickel for a whole truckload of mirrorless cameras but that is just me. If you are a serious amateur or working professional like me, the D850 (which is my go-to camera) or D5 is a far better choice.

Thanks Jared you are amazing, I've been debating for the last few months on which camera to buy.. D850 or Z7 but with your help I think I'm going to save go for the Z6 and invest in a new lens..

have the D750, I play with the Z6... today, would go with D850 in a seconds.... the Z systems are the future, but still in the begining, today my problem with those are the grip and sensor that is not cover. with the kind of shooting I do, big issue.... but , memory card, not really a problem for me. so, I think I will stick with my D750 for now until I found a good replacement for it. ( I do 99% of the time photo... rarely videos )

sensor not covered? No sensor is covered. I get sensor dust on my D5. The if you shoot at F22 with any DSLR you are going to see all the dust on it. Take your camera outside right now, point it at the sky shoot at F22 and get ready to see a dust storm.

D750 should still be in the conversation considering how great a value it is these days. Though the Z6 is also an excellent value, which is why I have one. It’s the 2nd best for low light performance (behind the D5), ties the D5 for continuous shooting rate (and no, I don’t consider 12-bit raw a significant downside as the difference is negligible unless you’re really pushing your shadows hard), is the best of the 4 for video, has great IBIS and is the cheapest by $1000+.

Great video, I know it’s a bit dated since Nikon introduced the Z6ii cameras. I was thinking of getting the Z6ii, however, I have two concerns, Nikons financial situation, and, adding a lens to these the Z6ii or Z7ii make them big and heavy. Thanks for the video, you did a awesome job as always.

Thats the reason why a lot of pros use canons lineup...better video focus on DSLRs. More FPS for pictures 1Dx MKII more raw continues shooting till full memory. And much more.

I am sticking with DSLR's, but that was an excellent review. I will buy a D6, if and when it comes out. But if had to buy a mirrorless camera today, it would be the Z6.
