It's been a little over a year since Nikon officially released the Z System with the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7. This video is my REVIEW a year later. I've used both cameras extensively in many different situations from indoors to outdoors to low light and great light.
I still stand behind my review's of both cameras but a year later there's a lot to discuss. There's more competition in the way of the Canon EOS R, Sony a7R IV, Sony a7R III and even the older a7 III.
This is my OFFICIAL Review one year later of the Nikon Z System.
This video was filmed with the Nikon Z6 of which we own 5 of and use as our main video cameras for the majority of our videos.

Thanks for this great video. Me, as an amateur and I choose the Z6 instead of the A7III few weeks a go, just because I had this feeling with it in my hands that I didn't had with the Sony...It' difficult to explain but I've tried them all in a shop. I took my time. Actually, I was not looking for technical perfection and for super specs, I just wanted a camera that would make me want to shoot. It's as simple as that! The Z6 fits perfectly in my hands. It makes me want to grab my camera, go out and take pictures! That's the most important thing to me

@ M-Amine Adjoua: Best reply I've read among all the replies. The Z-6's ergonomics, button placement, super-clear super-readable viewfinder, natural feeling handling, and for 99.9% of users, an autofocus that is as good as the Sony's, make the Nikon a better camera than the Sony A-7III, I feel.

I honestly don't know how you could've painted a better picture for the viewers. You clearly were making a conscious effort to be fair to the camera makers, your audience, pro photographers, amateur photographers, and fanboys. This is not easy to do, but I feel like you nailed it. I think the relaxed and calm presentation of the information really helped. Maybe it's not as fun and exciting as teasing the fanboys of Camera Brand X, Y, or Z, but you really got all your points across in a way where there really should be no hurt feelings. Really appreciate the video. I could imagine this one was quite a challenge to try and get right.

The comparison wasn’t really superfair. A great deal of it was spent on af performance, which was improved in the last two months with the new two firmware updates. Maybe not Sony-like still, but a great deal better. Wish he would have tried that on the field.

I just hope Nikon is listening to what its most loyal critics are nearly ALL saying about the Z system. I'm actually glad I'm not at a point at the moment where I can spend on a new system - my D750 is fine for now - because it'd be an agonizing choice. Hopefully in the next year to eighteen months, Nikon can make some big strides to address the issues raised here and I can be content in choosing from whatever their next release of full-frame mirrorless is.
@ThomasHaynes
@ThomasHaynes 4 года назад
@@GuNNeR85 Or maybe he's just not as impressed with the latest Nikon Z firmware updates as you are. Do you know for sure that he didn't try the new firmware? Either way it's just all of us having opinions, and it seems maybe you like the state of the Nikon Z system more than he does. Nothing wrong with that. I'm excited about the year to come, and see what happens when the Canon and Nikon systems mature more. I'd like to move into the full frame arena sometime in the next year, and I have no full frame glass to push me to a particular system. I'm currently leaning towards Sony for the video auto-focus performance, but it'll be interesting to see how much Canon and Nikon can play catch up over the next year. Should be a fun year.

Your opinions make a lot of sense from a professional stand point, 2 sd slots, more pro glass, quicker AF. But from a hobbyist or amateur stand point I think Nikon is still the way to go. More comfortable camera, better pictures (in my opinion) , more affordable and VERY good glass with more on the way, better display, and Nikon has proven they are keeping up with the software. I still recommend Nikon over the bunch

All we really need is Nikon to improve the autofocus, they are already adding firmware updates and im sure there will be more. On top of this by the next generation im sure they will have ironed out, there will be a second slot and id say they will be on par with Canon and very very close to Sony. I am a Z6 owner, very happy one: AF is an AI function and as long as the processor is fast enough it should be able to do what the Sony does via a firmware update. But even if the processors are 1-1 it comes down to us programmers, which company, Nikon or Sony, devs are doing a better job. Hopefully the devs at Nikon can improve the AI in the focus with the current Z6 within the first quarter of 2020. Making focus point move via the back touch screen is both firmware and hardware so that may be dependent on how fast the LCD touch sensor can keep up even if the firmware has the function added that will determine its usefulness assuming its added. If previous 2 can be updated via firmware in Q1 that would only leave only the glass, that's 100% hardware so they really need to get a grip on that ASAP and make glass for Z faster. I love my Z6 but it could use some firmware tweaks for sure on the AF which is supposed to be coming soon so this video may have been too soon. Z50 is great and Z70 should be even better. Continuous development and Continuous integration would get the Z AF up to par quickly and could even surpass on the firmware side.

Z6 shooter here. I agree with most of your observations about autofocus and the like, but I'm counting on these things improving within the next few years. Even with the shortcomings of the Z system, I find I very rarely miss a shot that I want to get when shooting events and candid portraits. Obviously, lens selection will improve with a bit of time, and in the meantime, I am enjoying the 50mm 1.8s and the 24-70 2.8s--both incredible lenses. I'm not afraid to admit that my Nikon nostalgia makes me shun the "better" Sony system. I'm sorry, but I just like Nikon more!

A fair and honest video... I'm a Sony user but admire how Nikon's images look, and also am wondering how Nikon manages to 'squeeze a little bit more' out of the Sony sensors they use in their cameras than Sony does lol! You truly seem to be 'torn' between the two... Btw the A7R IV feels fantastic and it's autofocus IS a jump from the A7R III; this camera that originally was trashed for being a 'minor upgrade' has a lot more going on underneath the hood than people (including me) originally noticed and is now getting the credit it deserves.

Z6 is huge step over DSLR IMHO. I will point some key features you could find interesting. 1. EyeAF. Focus and recompose is history. Shooting wide open is great with Z6 eyeAF. 2. AF system and back LCD. Most of time a shoot looking at back lcd screen and rarely trough viewfinder (mostly in bright light). Here are reasons.. My eyes do not serve me as before, I must relay of camera AF system. I have ability to shot low, middle, and high ground. Shooting from head point is boring and limiting. Shooting with primes and holding camera in one hand give me ability to have some focusing range by moving hand and not to have to move myself. 3. IBIS. My prime lenses are now stabilized. Finally solve problem with my shaky hands. :) 4. FTZ..Work great. I have Sigma, Tamron and Nikon FX lenses and they all work great! 5. Low light ISO performance. With f/1.4 lens and Z6 I never need flash.. 6. Ergonomics.. do not need to elaborate this.. 7. Silent shuter, USB-C charging, XQD card speed, connectivity with android, jpeg from camera, etc..

Sony has great cameras and I hope you will be satisfied with it. I want to comment some thing you mentioned in your video that I find not true from my perspective. 1. Z monut glass. FTZ iz the key! All my FX lenses work great with FTZ adapter. I have f/1.4 lenses and shoot with them. I really don't know what should I do when Nikon release faster Z glass but I am not willing to replace all my great FX lenses just because of new mount. Moreover because I use FX camera as my second body. 2. I really don't now what kind of problems people have with Z6 focusing system (I presume everybody has latest version of camera firmware). For example, I just shoot one Christmas event with Tamron FX lens and FTZ adapter. About 400 pics, most shoot with eyeAF. Maybe 10 or less were out of focus.. I am very satisfied how AF is preformed. It really confuses me when people complaining about AF..

It's a real help to have Jared break down the reasons for moving over to Sony while doing justice to the good points of the Z6 and its image quality while backing that up with his own shots. When you are looking to buy a camera, you can make a fairly informed choice if you do some research, but what you cannot do is make an informed choice based on years of experience and use of the cameras in the field. What I see when all are raving about fast eye-af, are they becoming lazy photographers? When looking at these videos when they are working, they all look point and shoot shots. They might like it now, but there is a downside to the ease of eye-af. In the next few years, every amateur can make the same shots with absolutely no effort at all. After saying that, the z-series z6 and z7 are the first ml cameras from Nikon. And most of us know that 1st Gen products are never the best iteration, no matter which brand you use. I do agree that Nikon need to step up their game. Not having a 70-200 f2.8 and other workhorse lenses with z-mount available is downright stupid. Having a decent eye-af is mandatory to be able to compete with the other brands. I still really like my D500 and for now, my only upgrade camera that I consider is a D850. I might go for a mirrorless in the far future, when all the kinks have been worked out. Till that day, I don't need eye-af or focus peaking. I do most of my photography without eyes on the subject and I want to learn to work without these features.

I’d personally like to thank Nikon for releasing affordable 1.8 lenses first instead of $3k 1.2/1.4 glass. The z mount 50, 85 and 24-70 2.8 are tops of their class and optically every bit as good or better than canons RF glass and considerably cheaper, lighter and smaller. A half stop of light isn’t worth $2k extra for me.

The desire for 1.2 glass came from film days when anything over ISO 1600 was all grain, todays cameras shoot clean up to 6400. So it is an advantage to have 1.8 glass to save weight and money.

I think you made a good point here. You are a professional working under conditions different than me and many others. The limited native lens selection can have an impact on your work, as can other points of concern like a single card slot. I, as an enthusiast on the other hand, decided to move on to FF mirrorless and went with the Nikon Z system, despite not having any Nikon glass. I am so incredibly eager to see the Z lens line up develop. Their f1.8s primes all but blew everything else out of the water, including lenses that cost 3 times as much. I can only imagine what kind of images their pro f1.4 - 1.2 primes will produce. Plus, there was an intangible and completely subjective factor: The Z6 just felt right after 2 minutes of handling the camera. I wasn't able to say the same for Sony, Canon or Panasonic. I predict that you will be back shooting Nikon in 2 years, when their native lens line up is fleshed out. I do so because in this video, you sounded like a boy breaking up with a girl he knows he really loves :D

Pretty much my experience too. Had several trips to camera store to play with all current FF mirorrless. Coming form APSC I had no FF glass. Nikon Z had the best feel, ergonomics, interface and great lighter weigh glass that is excellent image quality. Being an enthusiast landscape and street shooter the 14-30 f4 and 24,50,85 are all amazing and quite light and reasonably priced. Best bang for the buck and it saves my back. Loving it. Eager for their lens lineup to fill out a bit more, eager for macro 105. I totally understand while professionals may be hesitant, but Sony having a 4yr head start makes them the better choice for them right now. Both Canon and Nikons first mirrorless is about as good as Sony’s 2nd or 3rd, and I think they will catch up quickly. I suspect a lot of Nikons shortcomings in Z6&Z7 can be fixed in firmware. Very happy new Nikon shooter.

It's funny you mentioned how the Nikon just felt right. That comes down to personal taste and had shape/size. I shot some images with a Z7 and hated the feel of it. It was sporting a Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 and it was so front heavy it was horrible to hold. The camera just wanted to fall forwards all the time. I wasn't keen on the grip either. I have very large hands and it was way too short in the grip. I 'need' a vertical grip on my DSLRs, so I definitely need one on a mirrorless camera. The Z series doesn't have a comfortable and functional vertical grip, they just a box that holds batteries. The other issue on the particular camera I tried, and on the Z6 a photographer friend of mine tried, was that the images on the EVF and rear LCD looked nothing alike. The EVF looked yellowish and dull whereas the LCD looked accurate and fantastic. As for lenses, Canon RF glass is knocking it out of the park. I watched a comparison between the Canon 15-35mm f/2.8 with the Zeiss 35mm f/2.8. Zoom VS prime. The Canon was sharper in the centre and significantly sharper at the edges and in the corners. Both lenses were similar in price.
@Honkus

Oh yeah, for sure I agree a lot of camera shopping comes down to personal taste about the feel of a camera. I'd recommend highly people hold and use any camera for some time in a shop if at all possible (or at least make sure online purchases have a good return policy). Like Jared has mentioned you can get good images on pretty much any modern camera and it all comes down what fits your needs. In my opinion, I think you will be best off with native z glass both for performance and feel/balance. I have tried a few lenses with FTZ adapter and they do work perfectly fine but they definitely didn't balance well. I'd bet the Z 70-200 2.8 will feel much better when it comes out...soon hopefully since it was promised by end of 2019. Adapted lenses will always have compromises. I can only hope Nikon opens up their Z mount to Sigma and Tamron soon so they can build native glass to have more glass options. I thought I had heard a rumor of another grip coming out with more function than just holding batteries and using blue-tooth to trigger the buttons since you can already do that with remotes as it is, it should be easy enough. Even though I don't need grips myself, I totally agree it is an oversight and more of a reason these are really profession cameras as they are now. I agree the EVF was a bit odd out of box, I fiddled with settings a bit and it is closer to LCD but still not as good. I didn't see a yellowish dull tint with my LCD and it was quite sharp, but it was just dark and didn't seem to adjust appropriately. I adjusted levels on mine and added that to MYLIST to have easier access. The External LCD screen is quite excellent and one of the best out there. I do agree RF glass is amazing, but comes at a hefty price and it HUGE to boot. Was out of my price range to drop $2k+ for each lens (except for the 35 or the variable aperture zooms). Canon is defiantly killing it with their initial glass going for the professional, I'll be curious if they do drop the R mark II in 2020 as there are rumors swirling for that already.

@@Honkus I might be wrong Michael, but my understanding is that Nikon never 'open up' their mounts to third parties and that Tamron and Sigma instead have to reverse engineer the design using samples of Nikon's own lenses, which is why they take so long to come to market. That said, I share your hope that - by whatever method - Tamron and Sigma have some offerings soon, though not simply their current lenses modified to incorporate an FTZ adaptor, which is the solution some people suspect will emerge, at least initially :-( I currently have a Z6 with just the native 24-70 f4. It's incredibly sharp for a kit lens (albeit a somewhat premium 'kit' lens), but the combination is a little restricting and I'd like some lenses with a bit more reach. I'm also just about to invest in a Z50 (if they ever come back in stock!), as a travel camera and would love to have the Z equivalent of the Tamron 16-300mm that I've used with my APS-C DSLRs for several years now.

Some fair points but my arithmetic still favours the Z system. I'm a semi-retired pro of over 4 decades and I've shot everything from 11x14 to 35mm of different brands. Since I have a few f-mount lenses and the adapter works well, I'm somewhat "invested" in Nikon. I also don't understand the obsession with wide-apertures. For most of my career, I hardly used f/1.4 or less. So, my next purchase will be the 85mm f/1.8S and a second Z6 body. Meanwhile, hoping for a more advanced Z body in the not too distant future that might rectify a few of the minor annoyances with the Zs now in production.

This is the most biased update, you want to validate your move to Sony. I used the a7iii and z6, and shot 30 weddings. Let me counter your video with some facts, The Nikon has a night and day fit and finish, grip, controls, menu, and touch screen, and EVF. These are what you interact with everyday shooting. I just got my z6 back, and RAW video puts it in a different class in video. You want to talk glass, I used the 24-70 2.8 GM and the 24-70 2.8 Z, the 2.8 Z lens shaper wide open, and almost no CA, in fact all the z lenses I own are the best in their class. IBIS on the z6 is noticeably better. AF is not so simple, EYE AF is far better on the a7iii, but the rest of the AF (low light, tracking) is equal and both inferior to a d850. The Sony has way more battery life and dual card slots, the battery life is a non issue, I just carry extra batteries, the dual card slots is unfortunate that Nikon did that. Sony you can also power over USB, this is nice for video and time lapse. At the end of the season I sold my Sony lenses and bought a second z6 for next year. This is Nikon's first gen, and it is 90% of the a7iii Sony's third gen. The Z glass is superior in every way.

But as a professional photographer, it is sometimes hard to justify. I was shooting with my Z6 at a corporate event a few months ago. The autofocus was working fine mostly. But some key moments at the event which was specifically requested by the client turned out to be out of focus pics because the Z6 decided to back focus.I had to apologize to the client. FINALLY Jared THANK YOU! You finally pointed out my same focusing problem in AF-C Mode, I had been struggling with it for 6 months. No other Z6 reviewer has mentioned or shown it and I though I was screwing something up with my settings! Finally Hudson Henry told me to switch to AF-F Full Screen, but no more spot focus and it works better to focus on and track my face during movie mode when I have no one helping me behind the camera and I'm swimming blind, not seeing my face on screen. They really need Eye Detect in movie mode! Another stupid artifact of the lousy back and forth focusing in AF-C mode is that when trying to use the shutter button to focus, quite often it takes several freeze frame shots that I now have to weed out upon file transfer time. Now I switched over to back button focus, no more using the shutter button to focus. But they really need to fix this AF-C issue, they keep releasing new firmware, but won't fix the biggest auto focusing problem dragging this camera down.
@mygoodstuffreviewed
@mygoodstuffreviewed 4 года назад
I don't think the AF-C is actually really meant to be continuous autofocus as such, is it? I think it's badly named. And for video AF_F is the one that is meant to be used. As far as I can remember from what I've read, AF-C is more like what used to be called predictive focus - if you hold down AF-ON or the shutter button it will keep focusing and should help to get an object moving towards or away from you into focus at the point of actual exposure. For following a face/person AF-F should do the trick, as you've pointed out, but Nikon say in their own blurb that that's for video, not stills.

But the four f1.8 primes, the 14-30 f4 and the 24-70 f2.8 are the perfect lenses for my needs. I hate adapting lenses, but since my Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2 is my only F-mount lens, the FTZ just stays attached to it, almost like it’s a part of that lens. I will admit it’s frustrating that Nikon hasn’t released a fast portrait lens, a macro lens or the 70-200 for the Z system yet. I can wait, but don’t want to wait too much longer. One of your best videos to date on technology differences, marketing fails and why business decisions negatively impact not just the manufacturer, but those of us who use their products. Tony & Chelsea Noble posted a video discussing Nikon corporate financial problems (despite being owned by Mitsubishi) and they posited that they may not be able to catch up at all. My suspicion is that more and more Nikon shooters will migrate to SONY thereby further exacerbating Nikon's decrease in market share and continued financial problems. I replied in a similar matter. Jared has no clue what is in his hands IF he can't master a camera system in a year. 🤦🏽‍♂️ This guy talks about Auto Focus, yet does zero sports. So why is this guy mentioning that? We know he can't master the camera already, same goes for it's autofocus system. This is blog video stuff, period. This isn't real world, this is RU-vid personsality world.

I own a newish Z6 and am very happy with it . This is after 18 months of struggling with Sonys, an a7III and a7rIII. My main interest for around a year has been wildlife, particularly birds. With the a7rii and 100-400GM and birds in the air the auto focus acquisition and tracking were to often sketchy with an excessive percentage of missed shots. Enter a used Nikon D500 and 200-500 5.6 lens and my success rate skyrocketed. The other factor leading to my abandoning Sony was that the color is so much more natural to my eyes and post processing is far quicker with results that are more pleasing to me, particularly the Z6 files obviously. I recognize the shortcomings of the Z6 don't find them as big a hinderance to my photography enjoyment as those of the Sony, which I still own by the way.

Not Angry. And I completely agree. I just bought a Z7. And I only had one piece of Nikon glass when I bought it. It entirely depends on your genre and subject of shooting, so I completely agree. The Auto focus and glass on the Sony side, is superior. Not to mention the dual cards and the actually useful grip. But, I went with Nikon, because as you said, the RAW files in my opinion, are better for my work. I don't need to shoot sports or even portraits. Most of what I shoot... Are Rocks. I'm a 3D asset developer, using Photogrammetry to reconstruct point clouds and textures from images. And for me, the Nikon body gives me the best results for that workflow. And still provides me with good enough performance for on the side hobby landscape photography. My recommendation, if you don't have any glass or system bias yet, don't jump right to Sony, Nikon or Canon. Rent one of each for a day or a week, use them in your application, and then make your decision. For me that happened to be Nikon. But, for a lot of people that will be Sony, or even Canon. All depends on your use case. So, I agree completely, and as someone who just dropped hard earned money on a Z7, I am not close to being angry or chapped. If the camera you have is working for you, than be happy! You don't have to sell and switch systems.

Very nice explanation Jared! I have the full Nikon LIneup and have pre-ordered the new 70-200z lens. I do agree with your focus issues which is why I still carry my D5 for my fast-moving and low-light subjects. I hope that Nikon R&D takes your recommendations onboard. I think I'm nearing the end of my photography career (within the next 5 years I'll be video centered). So a complete shift to another brand wouldn't be wise for me. Chelsae and Tony Northrup say Nikon is about to fall off the map completely. Do you agree with that? What's the future of Nikon Look Like? Who knows... thanks.

You are absolutely right. I was very close to choose the z6 also for the good promises of video in raw with the external atomos recorder. But at the end all those minus you listed, made me deciding to divide my equipment between sony and blackmagic. On more reason is the bigger accessory ecosystem that they have built around them ( cages, handles, gimbla adaptations, log and luts ) wich Nikon does not have.

I went Sony over Nikon because I was able to get an A7III and a brand new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for under 3K. The Z mount needs third party lens support asap, and unfortunately Nikon is late to the game and needs to get Sigma, Tamron and others their mount specs so they can start building a real full frame lens lineup. This has been said before but I feel like it isn't emphasized much, but native glass on a full frame is so much better than adapted lenses.
@Matti6950
@Matti6950 4 года назад
Agree, i made a list of things i like about Sony, Nikon, and dislike. Nikon was a lot behind, but noone was a dealbreaker in the way of that it couldnt be fixed in future if the company works hard. However one thing was: Sigma (and tamron, samyang, everything!) support. I love my Sigma lenses, i love their niche (Sigma 35mm f1.2 art), and now it's available with open source AF (more accurate then ever). Just ordered Sigma 14-24mm DG DN for E-mount! Even if nikon makes one, gonna cost double as much. And AF is very good from what i see. I'm also very interested in the 35mm art F1.2. And no, i always mix oem glass with third party glass, i pick wichever suits me best. I now have two Sony GM lenses as well (24mm F1.4 and 24-70mm). But also, i tested Z7 in a shop, and didn't like it's ergonomics, after all the comments on the net it surprised me. When i later touched A7RIV, it was the big confirmation: I like Sony at least as much as nikon (ergonomics). Button wise i don't like nikon Z7, to much functions hidden away, that cannot be put to a button (even the turn wheel on sony can have 3 functions in 3 modes). Overall Sony made some good moves, but they (like any manufacturer) still have things to win: Lossless compressed, better screen quality, no menu lockup during buffer clearance, stuff like that. But there's so much other issues, that plagues nikon, Sony has fixed: like good buffer, battery (not that nikon is bad, but sony one is insanely good), double card slot, enough customization buttons, pixel shift, etc.

One more thing: I found a great link to another YT-er that shows a hack for better focusing on the Z6. So Maybe it's a little premature to say it's not that good. I regularly give talks to camera clubs and look at a lot of real world high end amateur photography in national/international exhibitions. I have just sold my D5 and D850 having returned from a trip from India with the Z6 and Z7. I have to say the results with these cameras are superb and I find the new z mount 24-70 f2.8 is fantastic in practice and compares favourably with prime lenses. I don't us eye autofocus and find I have trained myself to hit the spot even with the Nikon 105 f1.4 at f1.4. If I shot sports or flying birds I would be tempted by Sony but for me the the ergonomics and the images I get with the Zseries make me want to stick with Nikon. I am not worried about the single card slot.

@guyyowell8547
@guyyowell8547 4 года назад
I totally agree that Nikon should have released the Holy Trinity of professional lenses before wasting development time and effort on a lens - the 58mm f/0.95 Noct - that few people will buy. Personally, I’m very satisfied with the Z7, and haven’t experienced any issues with the Autofocus system because I’m primarily a landscape/portrait photographer. Although the Autofocus system on the Sony is demonstrably better than the Nikon Z6/Z7, i feel there’s more to a camera than the Autofocus system. The Sony definitely needs to improve the “usability” of their cameras with respect to their menus and lack of touchscreen capabilities. To me, this is much more important than an EyeAF system that can track people bobbing up and down which, in my view, is not a realistic situation (unless you’re shooting sports). I still would not consider switching to Sony at this time, though I have been watching Canon very closely. The new RF lenses are a real game-changer. We’ll see what the next version of their mirrorless camera offers. But when all is said and done, the Z7 is currently meeting all my needs.

Amazing, honest, utterly professional review. The golden key that Nikon still holds is its secret sauce of color science and image quality. If they'll be clever enough - solve the dual card issue, AF and Eye AF - they have the potential to rise up and be a leader again. as we all know Sony AWB, Colors and IQ are still behind Nikon and Canon. For event shooters who shoot 2000-2500 images per event, this is a big deal. I shoot both Sony and Nikon, and I'm getting my colors right with Nikon in post much quicker. Another thing is that Nikon FX 70-200 2.8 is eating the Sony GM for breakfast, Wake up Nikon! do what you have to do. PS if Sony will fix it's AWB and bad colors sooc it might be game over for Nikon

Agree with most, but the Z6 is a fantastic 1st gen camera. The Nikon color science is the best by far. The EVF is excellent, and the autofocus is pretty good IMO and will only improve over time. The Nikon menu system is superior to Sony. and the general camera ergonomics and build quality are superior in the Nikon. A proper battery grip is a must I agree. As far as lenses go, I have F lenses now so I don't care if the Z glass takes some time to arrive. I don't know if or when I will switch to Z-lenses anyway. If a new user who never held one of these cameras before picked up both a Sony A7III and the Nikon Z6 for the first time they would probably choose the Nikon for the ergos and EVF alone.

Just be careful not to fall for the sunk cost fallacy. You have to look at what the best use of your money and lens assets is going forward. I didn’t go with Sony, but I took a long hard look at both Nikon’s current and long-term trajectory, and determined that the Z-System will ultimately fail due to Nikon’s inability to establish a full professional system of native Z-Mount glass before its competitors do. Canon has almost covered the basic pro lenses, and we’re just waiting on a pro body from them. The L-mount alliance (my choice) is nearly there already with pro bodies/lenses, and will have a mostly complete system in just 15 more months. Sony, of course, is already a mature system. So what can Nikon hope to do against all that, when they’ve already badly mismanaged their available time and resources on ineffective product strategies?Look at Nikon’s latest financial report. The Z-Cams aren’t selling now, and that’s not going to improve going forward as the competition races by them. Which means that if Nikon survives at all, it’s going to be falling back to being a DSLR-only business within 1-2 years.
