Good answer!!! Because i love the Novation launchkey mini mk3, because It has pads, sustain port and the midi out, but i also love the native instrument komplete kontrol m32 not for the controller but for the softwares included. It's a difficult answer🤔

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Native Instruments. Their software, while very good, has to go through a second piece of software just to work. Their hardware is somewhat similar in that, to use all the bells and whistles on either the keyboards or pads, you have to go through their software. The Midi mode is usable, but shuts off most of the controls, (at least it does on the Mikro Mk3). On the other hand. The Launchkey line, while made for Live out of the box, can adjust to other DAWs with a little effort on your part and is class compliant if you use iOS regularly. The included software is enough to get a brand new producer started, but it's not as robust as N/I out of the box. It is worth noting that launchkeys work perfectly with all N/I software via midi cc mapping. So as usual, it all comes down to what you want. The M32 is more solidly built and comes with great software while the launchkey has more options and flexibility. My personal choice, is the launchkey mini. I drive a truck for a living, so space is always at a premium. Add the flexibility it offers and it works better for my needs over the m32.

I was going to say the same thing.... the software requirements in order to get things working is pretty bad.... you need Komplete Kontrol loaded all the time if you want to use full chords controls, etc.... I have the s66mk1 and should have purchased the nova 49 instead.... oh well... at least there is a used market for stuff.

Just because of that, frustration to make any hardware really work in any DAW, I started to sell all my NI gear. To be honest. Fuck that company. I wasted so much money on their gear and NOTHING really worked as advertised. Always pain to use it. Constant problems with Controller editor (crashing). Half assed DAW integration (Maschine Jam has original Bitwig script but it's just barely working, people writing their own scripts to make it work better and NO update whatsoever form NI on this front since launch few years back. NI simply does nto care and does not listen to people at all. My advice. Do not buy anything form them. They sell good concept but in real life nothing really works (without hours spent on making it work). Just do not bother. And do not expect any updates. It's just marketing. Novation on other hand is well known for constant updates and customer care. So in short. I am selling all stuf form NI and I never buying anything form them as it's mostly lies and marketing.

The MIDI CC use for this keyboard was updated in January, now allowing for full programming with any DAW. Do you have an updated opinion on this?

@@mercedesescobarmusic Only that NI just made the m32 that much more useful with that update. :) The m32 I used back then was borrowed from a friend when I wanted to see if it was a worthwhile purchase; I never owned one, myself. Considering one now that Maschine and Kontakt are playing a lot nicer on my new laptop. Just need them to come back into stock or wait for the mk2 model if one is on its way.

I tried the Launchkey. I ended up taking it back for the M32... I'm much happier with it. The Launchkey seems to be more Ableton and even though I own Ableton Pro 9 (Push 1), I don't use it... I should of sold it years ago. The hardware stays in it's box... Anyway the DAW integration with Studio One and other DAWs makes the M32 right awesome.

I'm considering one of these two and don't know which to pick... was gonna go for complete S49 first cause I don't need portability, but it's so bulky!!!! I love the novation one but I hate that itstarts on C... I need those extra keys before and after the octave but nothing too bulky

As a noob just getting into music production the novation mk3 seems an all around better value, the m32 looks way better at specific tasks, but as a starting point I’ll go for portability and drum pads.

You can use keys for drums. If you really need pads I would get a dedicated Pad player for that.

Haha amazing video John as always! I will however "fight you in the comments" and make an argument for the arturia mkii. With that keyboard, you are getting Ableton live lite but most importantly Arturia Analog Lite, which is (in my opinion) one of the best VST's for synths and an incredible start for any new musician. In regards to the M32, the biggest piece of software you get with it is streamlined integration with Native Instrument's Komplete Kontrol VST (which is completely free to anyone who goes to their site along with Komplete Start with is incredible). I would make the argument that because of the incredible software package of Analog Lab Lite and possibility of using Komplete Kontrol just like you would use on a M32, Arturia would be my personal winner. Also in my experience, I personally prefer the keybed of the arturia over the M32 but again, personal preference. Sorry for the essay ;).

Novation Mini Mk3 all day - MIDI Out for something this small is a game changer, Custom Mappings & configurable Midi is insanely dope for anyone using this with actual hardware & with other DAWs, super rad arp features + user chord mode, PADS!, Ableton integration .. so much packed in such a tiny and compact design it's insane - it's cheaper also by $30 - absolute no brainer for me

Hey! I just bought Komplete control m32 & have installed the software that came with the purchase but instrument sounds do not want to charge. Only get error message complete check could not load plugin. Installed on site that was preselected. What have I done wrong? Have tested a few different turtorials but still fail.

I'm a little late to this conversation, but I bought the A25 NI when it came out (same as the M32, less keys and huge. Disappointed in the software, it wasn't easy to set up. Having the Novation Circuit Tracks, I'm interested in the Launchkey as well.

I know, I am a little late to the party, but would you mind to give me your advice? I want to buy a small keyboard (in front of me) and a 2nd with 61 keys left to my table. I am torn between two combinations: Launchkey Mini/ S61 (MK1 , used) OR M32 and Launchkey 61. Any opinions?

Do you know if i can connect the launchkey mini (or the keystep) to a launchpad pro? I dont need pads in a keyboard since i have a launchpad, but it would be great if i can connect both midi controllers. This is my only problem with the m32, the outputs. Also, how good is the m32 on live performances? I know the launchkey mini mk3 is a better option for that, but i prefer to have more and better keys than pads, as i said. Thank you, this kind of videos are really helpful.

I had launchkey and couldn't get the pads to work with my preferred drum software. I went with m32 just for that reason alone, also some of the novation included software was a pain to register and a few things didn't like bass station...

very dope video the talk around in the micro mini game also is between the novation mk3 and the arturia mini lab mk3 if these two are up to par or have surpassed akai professionals mpk mini series which i yet to have seen a comparison regarding the topic but since im an ableton user the preset for launchkey seem to make ableton a user firendly plateau as to having to make a template

Well, I get why you prefer the M32 (keybed, bundled software, etc.). But for me, seems like the Launchkey Mini MK3 (or maybe even the MK2) might be a better fit (much more portable, nice big pads to trigger tracks, program changes, lighting cues, etc.). Also, for music production on the go, couple it with an iPad. That begs the question, which iPad? I'm a long term Windows/Android user, but have become utterly frustrated trying to find music production software/apps in that environment. So I'm thinking about getting an iPad. JM, what are the specs of the iPad you use? Thanks!

I own the M32 but i see the MK3 is a very mighty keyboard. It has an ARP Editor/Function built in - the M32 can't use the ARP standalone because ARP and Chord is part of the Software. The midi mappings of the M32 can't be changed and in midi mode - you just can use the 8 knobs (fix CCs, but you can habe 4 pages so 4 x 8 knobs with fix CC) and the notes. No other button can be mapped. So you cant change the BANK (bank up/down) in Ableton live to control all the Parameters of the Ableton live Instrument. The MK3 is fully midi mappable (i read...). And the MK3 has MIDI out. That's really great! M32 has no midi out. But the M32 has an Instrument Browser (NKS) - really useful, a Display and touchable endless knobs (great!!)! I don't like that fixed knobs of the MK3... it's so odd! If you switch to another vst Instrument the parameter values of the knobs don't fit to your keyboard. In 2019 i think it should be standard to have endless knobs and visual information to show the parameter value of the knob!!! So i would like to have that MK3 plus some features (endless knobs, a display, aftertouch, 37 mini keys) and i would pay 199 for it....

Nice breakdown of the functionality and limitations. Thanks man. I just happened to come across the LaunchKey Mini MKIII at Guitar Center open box for $60, plugged it in right there and tested everything and I can't tell it was ever used. Looks brand spanking new, no issues. So I just went ahead and got it. Now I find out it's the new midi controller to have right now, so I'm excited about my purchase. Another limitation is that for those that want to use the MKIII for live performances, they're going to have a difficult time of it because of the new SHIFT button. You have to use both hands to navigate in Ableton, one holding SHIFT and the other using the nav buttons, so this leaves you unable to keep your hands where they're needed─pads and keys. The MKII didn't have this problem, but it also didn't have a lot of the bells and whistles that the newer one does. And it's possible that Novation could release a firmware update to add in a SHIFT-lock function to it, where you can double or triple press the button to lock it to certain functions, and then you can navigate without having to take your hand off the keyboard or pads.

Each knob got a dedicated display, midi out/mapping and aftertouch. But no pads but i don’t need pads. Happy producing!!!! 🙌

You can use keys for drumming, so I don't know why they wasted space with pads. They could have used more controls, but they did the cheap way to make it more marketable.

Sorry for my english and errors, I'am french. Thanks you for yours videos. In my opinion, both are good anyway. It's depending how you are and what kind of music you are playing. In my case, i will not the need of to have pads all the time, so a better keyboard mind more important to me. In fact, for me, maybe , the only way to take the Novation will be for the place. I will do appreciate differences point of views about that.

I wanna know what exactly am i missing in the NI for not having pads. They are doing monopolistic strategy of forcing us to buy their launchpad or whatever. So what are the imp functions of the pads in music making?? I wanna buy A49 of KK.

Good keys with good dynamic are better than bad pads even for drums. If you really care for drum pads you buy some dedicated like the AKAY, or a lightpad.

The launchkey is a far better product in use despite the smaller keyboard. Just annoying they couldn't be bothered to include the (quite hard to get) TRS-A adapter with it.

Mini MK3 is the future IMO for compactness, more functionality and footprint. I believe the mobile studio is the future via smartphones and pads and you need to be portable. Look at what you can do with a smartphone today in making music. way to go MK3 and way to go on a dope video and keeping us informed. You are the main man!

Depends on what you are looking for in a controller....Arturia shines in the area of sequencing...but the m32 has a better keybed...more software and more control options and better DAW compatibility

They're both limited. For portability, beginning producers, and Ableton-only users the Novation is probably the best choice. But the NI is the better unit overall, and I'd rather pair it with a LaunchPad mini for use with Ableton anyway.

That's what I'm about to do. Pair the M32 with the Arturia Beatstep. And that's all I need. Two great sturdy units.

Launchkey wasn’t for me. Drum mode didn’t work at all. The key bed was awful. Would love to take a closer look at the M32 but for now, the Microkorg is still midi controller and does a decent enough job with the hot keys of logic. Interested in exploring the BeatStep or Nektar Aura

Update - can confirm via e-mail from tech support. Drum mode on launchkey does not work with the logic script. They recommend using the scale mode to play drums. That would hinder my workflow but thought some people would like to know this before purchasing. :) Thanks again

@@robertlee1176 Thanks for this tip! I was really looking forward getting a Launchkey after quarantine, was readying to order one on Amazon already. And at this point was actually just looking at whether the Launchkey could change the midi channel on the knobs and pads on Drum Mode. And then you suddenly say that Drum mode on the launchkey doesn't even work with Logic :)) Have you checked the Logic script? I'm fairly new to navigating and re-assigning it (been using my Nanokey Studio), have checked the Launchkey Mini MK3's and I thought it was actually working. Seems like everything on the Mini Mk3 runs on channel 16, but there wasn't a script there for Drum Mode nor what midi data's from drum mode. Maybe the drums in the LK MIni Mk3 runs on Channel 10 or Channel 16? Damn seems like I'm back to the dilemma of whether I should even still get this device, or get an Arturia Minilab (which seems to be sold out on Amazon US and Japan so that fact's stopping me from ordering it), or an Akai Mini MPK Mk2.

Well, Novation does make larger launchkeys with keybeds up to 88. But not even the full size launch key 25 can do backpacks very well.

Seems to be the Launchkey MK3 is better suited for Live performance while the M32 is better suited for Production.

The issue with the Launchkey MKIII is that you have to hold the shift key to navigate with the arrow buttons, forcing you to use both hands, and really screwing you over in a live performance where keeping at least one hand on the keys or the pads at all times is almost a must. Novation needs to add a shift-lock function, where you can double or triple press the shift key to lock it to certain functionalities/menus, then you can quickly tap shift and go back to what you're doing.

It's not even close. The novation is the dopest thing ever. Mine came in today. I had the native instrument and hated it. U couldn't midi map the transport controls!

I would go with the mk3, the native instruments software is free so not much going on there......it has drum pads and integrates well with ableton which is the standard for making midi electronic music...it comes with, from the reviews Ableton intro, and has Pads to get you going with making beats... for chords you only need one hand, and if you dont know how to play chords like I do, I use a plugin called "scales" and it maps your midi to those chords...one finger chords in any octave and transpose...i bet i could midi cc channel those pads to play any chord in any octave then add effects to that chord on a fly its endless. back to what i was saying thou about the software you get paid software where as the native is free from all I understand, I could be wrong but from what I understand its what I see. heck i bet if I bought the mk3 and then downloaded the native I get twice the bang for my buck, the MK3 has it all and has stepped up the bar on budget midi. if you want a all around midi that will get you started and on task making music then trying to figure it all out i say go with the MK3, its what i will be going with when i get the funds to get it. its my new favorite midi controller for taking something out for live and just making music when the flow just starts, inspiration comes at anytime. I would say go with the MK3

Im still rolling my mind in between these two. Im gonna buy on of these next day. NI komplete kontrol M32 has scale function on it. My question is , the transpose function of the launchkey mini mk3 is doing the same thing or not? If mk3 can do the scale separation work same as the m32, then i'l buy the mk3. Or else i buy the m32, i don't concern about the pads stuff. Please help me with this..

No the mk3 doesn’t have the scale function...but it does have a chord mode..both differ from one another..scale mode is for playing individual notes...chord mode is an easy way to play chords...

Its all good with all the talk about features. What #%%# me off with all these micro controllers is there seem not to be any standard at all for the size of the keys, but I guess they dont care, since they all are pretty useless for playing any thing usefull on anyway. I’ll take a 20 or 24 key normal size key controller. These are all just junk anyway, or at least the keys are just there to be able to define a chord or arp pattern. They really arent ment to be used for regular playing.

True! But of all the micro boards I’ve put my hands on...the M32 is the most playable out of the bunch! It has a keybed that actually feels like a keybed in a 49-key controller...very playable and I use it all the time both live and in the studio

M32 is the best desktop master to play VSTs, the Launchkey is a cool toy to learn to use Ableton. NI hardware is really good yet you have to deal with Kontrol all the time with it.

I was really looking forward who you would crown King in the end, but I guess you crowned both over some other mini keyboards already. I received M32, but as seen in the video I am a bit disappointed looking at the footprint compared to functionality. Look how small the MK3 is and how many buttons / pads etc compared to the M32. I feel like NI really wants the consumer to feel they picked up a very stripped Komplete Kontrol S keyboard, while the MK3 looks more like it is completely designed to be as compact possible with the most functionality built in as a design. So a full product compared to a fully stripped down version. Mostly I am disappointed at the midi out. Also Arturia Keystep has many inputs and outputs. The MK3 is also not my preferred mini keyboard, because I am still saving up to purchase a Push 3 which would then be a better Ableton controller. But of course that comes with a price. So I think I return my M32 (although key bed is great), and decide to go for the Arturia Keystep, great software, sequencer and with midi out a great controller for Novation Circuit.

The M32 is one of the better designed / build small keyboard around, probably the best looking one. The launchkey is cheap but you get not so good keys, at the end of the day you still need a mouse / keyboard to use ableton. Yet the basic transporters on the M32 ain't that bed for ableton and others.
