I’m a nurse and fellow renovator. I’m glad to see you using a respirator for the heat wand. As an added precaution can you have your heavy metal levels checked every 3-6 months ie lead. Lead vapour is invisible. I love that you’re so enthusiastic about preserving your home’s history and legacy, it’s infectious. Keep up the wonderful work

I am in the uk and I’ve never heard of being able to have my heavy metals checked?

@@willow9790 Lead poisoning is quite significant, leads to brain damage if exposed to certain levels or prolonged periods. It was in paint in the UK until 1992 but it was banned. It was banned in the US since 1978 so it will still be in all the paint in Caleb’s house. My sister spent a week heat stripping paint and inadvertently poisoned her whole family. No serious side effects but that was only by chance. She was told that all the houses in her area were lead painted so she thought she’d get checked and after her levels were found she checked the rest of the family and all had higher than safe levels. It will work itself out of the body but really really slowly do best not to expose yourself in the first place. Intact paint is fine. A 5cm piece of lead paint will kill a 2yo. Paint fumes are slower but equally as toxic. If you want your levels checked, just tell your doctor you think you’ve been exposed and ask for a blood test.

I love following you guys, I remember the first episode like it was yesterday. Watching your restoration helped me so much when I was homeless, I could live in a fantasy world each episode. Thanks for explaining why you use all three products for different areas of your home and including the reasons why. Very good tutorial. On another note. You should consider building a second story over your extended museum shop to warehouse salvaged architectural details. The public may want to use/purchase them when they see your masterpiece completed and are moved to save other Victorian gems as well.

A note about removing lead paint with heat: you _are_ creating lead fumes - very hazardous over medium to long-term exposure - and they don't vanish when you stop working. So outdoors, a respirator alone is probably fine; indoors, you should have some sort of air exchange running in your workspace. eta: I'm told in replies (below) that more modern heat-driven removal tools are precise enough to avoid lead fumes so if you have one of them, you're safe from all this. But make sure you have something that's very well temperature-controlled and specifically classified for this use case, because older ones _weren't_.

He's using a Cobra heat gun, which doesn't get hot enough to vaporize lead. It's advertised to be safe for removing lead paint.

@@jenniferfaye529 _Really._ Okay. I did not think you had to get up to full vaporisation temperature to get lead included in the off-gassing. (It's certainly not what I was told back in the day. When I was working with lead paint removal it was chemical or full venting, nothing in between.) I guess it's a matter of "better tools are cheaper now?" And that's great. Guess I learned something today. ^_^

@@solarbirdyz The website says lead vaporizes at 900-1000 degrees, and this heat gun gets up to 500-600 degrees, which I guess is not as hot as traditional heat guns get, which do vaporize lead. You still have to wear a respirator and have good ventilation, but the lead isn't vaporizing.

To be honest, I get a lot from your videos, I try not to miss them. I learn from this slow beautiful process, some history, new things, I also find extremely therapeutic to watch and relax. I used Coopers after seeing your early work. The stuff works very, very well. The wood looks like it just came out of the millwright’s and was so smooth. No sanding needed. The downside is that solvent seemed to be absorbed through the skin. I wore gloves and used a respirator, but I could not shower that smell off of me. Made me wonder how much was getting in my system. I used it in an enclosed porch with all the windows open. Was thinking your house, Caleb, must have been some fume-y!

Hello Caleb. I have a suggestion on the detailed interior wood. Instead of the brass brush, try a handful of fine sawdust. Rub it along the grooves and it should collect the paint and stripper. A furniture refinished taught me that. It’s cheaper too.

Excellent tutorial. The peel away is so painful because of the extremely high pH of the compound, around 14. It is very nearly the opposite of battery acid.

Thanks for sharing this it's interesting to know these things. Paint stripper that you get that layers of paint off the wood. So you can redo the wood the way it was years ago. Cooper brand looks good 👍 I'll do the job, I'm thinking 🤔. You take care.

Thank you for the explanations and demonstrations. Last fall I tried liquid stripper with the overlaid Saran Wrap and it did a really poor job Wish I had known about the heat method. I will be saving your vlog for future reference when I start removing thick paint from outside window frames. 🎉

Loved it! Thank you. I ended up using the citrus stripper (started the project before I found you). And yes it took about two days per two kitchen cabinet doors to remove pain from the 1940s forward.

Peel-away 1 is not for wood, apparently peel-away 8 is better for wood. Used peel-away 1 on brick, it worked but left a slight white film on the bricks, which I have still not removed.

Thanks for helping us understand why and where you use these products. I loathe the off the shelf strippers for furniture. Citrastrip is the WORST and QCS is far better than I expected. Because strippers are expensive and messy, I use a carbide scraper when I can and a heat gun when I can

I had plans to remove paint from my since my dad painted it its been peeling off like latex and not chipping but like you can scrape it seeing your video I can get what I need since it's hard to find paint strip I can use

I tried Coopers from watching your videos. I also used it on interior mill work, but I found it just didn’t do the job. My house just has TOO many layers of paint on the wood trim-up to 4 layers of lead paint with between 5-10 layers of latex paint over that. I found that the only thing that works is a heat gun.

I have a 1914 Edwardian I'm restoring and the most difficult time removing the latex paint from the masonry. I tried using a paint stripper made from formic acid and benzyl alcohol followed by pressure washing, but it really didn't do much to get all the caked on layers off. I wanted to remove all the paint after watching your video on spalling and having to repair several areas already because of the latex paint. At least I was able to find restoration mortar semi locally. Where do you find the special paper with the plastic backing? I went to local hardware stores as well as big chains and they all looked at me like I grew a 3rd head when I asked if they carried anything like it. Someone even tried to tell me the latex paint was good for the foundation. 😂

Had to take a look -- the Cooper's seems to be online-order only in the US (is made in NZ), and is quite expensive. For the time and result it could definitely be worth it. Is the flusher still necessary?
