There are many helpful mediums out there to thin and thicken paint.
You can use a flow medium to thin: Floetrol or Decoart Pouring medium work well

Finally the information I have been desperate for. That might explain why I have had so much disappointment in learning how to dot paint. I now know which paints to avoid (I have been blaming my inability to produce just one successful dot painting on my self.)Thank you so much and keep these tutorials coming. They have inspired me to keep trying.

Thank you sooooo much for giving us the skinny on what paint to sink $$ into for dot art. I am currently using both regular paint diluted a bit and a couple of diff craft paint colors I've bought. I use a metal punch set to do my dots (very budget friendly), and sometimes the ends of my paintbrushes.

I haven't even painted my first stone yet but looking forward to it. Just spent £60 on decoart Americana paints. So far this lockdown I've started learning mosaics, needle felting and now this. Also looking into pouring acrylics. Love all craft hobbies but thinking the buying of all the different mediums is a hobby within itself!!! ( All the gear, with no idea) I metal detect too but unable to go out at the moment so turning my hand to something else that will keep me focused. Thank you for all your help. New Sub from the UK :)

Such a wonderful and informative video. I thought I knew a lot about the acrylics shown here but you've taught me quite a bit more. Your offering up your time and talent to make this kind of video saves us newbies so much on paints, tools, etc. I'm addicted to the Deco metallic also for other craft projects. Please consider making a separate video on brushes. Thank you.

Thank you so much! This was extremely helpful. I couldn't sleep and decided to write everything down that you'd talked about in this video. I've been dotting a little over a year, and I had problems with colors running down the sides of my rocks. I do, however, like the peaks on some top dots for the tactile effect. I have so many different types of paint in my arsenal. I just bought whatever when I started. I wish I'd seen this video before I did that. Thanks again, Miranda. I love your videos BTW

Very good video... for lesser acrylic paints, you Can use an acrylic binder, and, yet, get the consistency for dots... My Favorite "craft paint" for dots, is Actually Americana. I Also add the Elmers Glue All, as a binding agent... (Very minimal usage of course)...

I agree about the Craft Smart paints. Even before I took an interest in dot painting, I came to discover that they do have a tendency to separate, even the basic black and white. I would have to use two coats for my background.

Really appreciate your videos. Great inspiration. I personally found my way to the "Golden Fluid Acrylics" after trial and much error. While as you say the are a little pricy, they are worth it. Just a note Golden makes two other acrylics that just don't work with dot painting. They are Golden High Flow Acrylics and Heavy Body. The first is watery and the Heavy is true to its title and takes a long time to dry.

Miranda, I wanted to share a helpful tip W/U about Clean up after U'r finished painting. if U'll line each one of Ur Pallet's W/Press-N-Seal then when Ur finished painting U'll have a much quicker clean up. The press-n-seal does tend to leave ur pallets feeling Stickie/Tackie, but if U use the Press-N-Seal each time before U paint I don't see how it should be a problem. It never has been for me, I'd much rather have a Stickie/Tackie feeling to my pallets than to deal W/paint going down my drain or getting it all over my hands... Hope this tip helps Ur days go by Quicker & Cleaner....

I have a 48-count set of Masters Touch Acrylics from Hobby Lobby. I just noticed (after watching this video) that my dots have peaks. So I'm going to try some pouring medium (as seen in another dotting video) & see if I can "smooth" it out!! Thank you for this video! Lots of good information!!
@joannedonovan9489
@joannedonovan9489 5 лет назад
Nope. No difference. But they're still beautiful paints, and I'll use them ... just not for dotting anything precious! Right now I'm using them to color stamped images, then I dotted the whole background of the cards (birthday & anniversary)!! Good practice!! And nobody will care if there's peaks or not (except me)!! I'll work on acquiring the paints you recommend. I want my dots to look like yours!!

You can add Golden Glazing Liquid to your really thick paints to thin them a bit without running the risk of underbinding. It also keeps you paints open a bit longer so it will take a tad longer to dry.

Update - I was having some trouble with making nice dots And getting very far on walking the dots! I realized I did not have any bottles of deco art Americana so I went and picked up half a dozen to try! And wow what a big difference even the paint is smoother and the consistency is a bit thicker and the colors are really intense! Now my dots are finally starting to work I just need a lot more practice but when you’re not fighting with the paint and your supplies it’s a much better experience! So I appreciate you taking the time to put this video together for us and giving us your tips on what you’ve learned about paint!

Thank you for this video brilliant I’m from UK and we have different paints too ,although I’m a beginner I have found decoart paint best pebo only got two but they are nice ,other paints I have far too thick that I’ve learnt yea leave points on top , not what I want ,I’m not sure if I can just use abit of water too thin down ? Or if I need flow improver ,so I think I will stick with deco art paints oh and I shall be purchasing metallics now they looked gorgeous 👍

I’m so glad I found this video. Thank you so much. It helped a lot to get my dots better. I do have one question and if not it’s no big deal. I’m just wondering if you’ve ever tried dotting with any tubed paints regardless of the brand. Artist Loft and the student grade that Walmart carry and 2 in particular that I can think of. Are they just two thick for dotting and do the peak thing? I’m going to try on paper at some point to see along with some small tubes that I don’t remember the brand but I was just curious about your opinion. Thanks again for all you do. You are a great help and asset to all of us and I know I look up to you. 🙂💜
@MirandaPitrone
@MirandaPitrone 4 года назад
Yes they are too thick. But you can easily thin them with a flowing medium. For dotting you want a consistency..kind of like yougurt. Otherwise you will get peaks or dots that are not round.😉Thank you so much for your kind words and for stopping to stay hi❤

Could you please put a link to that other video explains more about tool's you tried you talked about in this one. Thanks so much. If possible could you list in the comments the names of the tool's if you ever do anymore. My brain can't get everything to get it all down on paper. Lol part of living with Fibro and pain. Only if not too much trouble. Thanks dear for all you do for us. Maybe companies will send you some new tools to try and you can do video's testing new product's since don't think dotting will be going away. 😃 companies will be coming up with new products who knows they may give you a extra set to giveaway. Just a idea.❤

Hi Miranda, I've decided I want to get into mondala painting. I've purchased DecoArt multi surface paint and some stencils. But from what I'm looking at it seems like stencils might be further down the line. Anyhow, I have a couple of questions. Is it best for your paint to be very thick? I haven't finished watching your video maybe you cover that in this video, If so sorry about that. My other question is when you're doting do you wipe it off before dipping it in the paint again? I know people will walk it, where they dip it and then continue dotting , I'm just curious if you wipe it off before dipping it in the paint each time? Thank you in advance. Now I'm going to finish watching your video. I did make one project today and it's okay but of course I would like it to be better ☺️ have a great night.

I was wondering what paint you use for the base. For instance if I’m painting on a board what base paint. Should it be a gloss or whatever. I have used just a flat matte, but my dots aren’t spreading well. They are misshapen. I think it works better to have the base a more slippery paint, at least one that dries shiny. Just wondering what people use.

I recently found you and I'm so glad I did. Do you have a huge selection of color schemes? Color palettes. On a site. I went to someone's page where there were complementary colors to paint together? If not do you know where they would be listed.

Nice video about the details on various paints. I noticed that you don't seal the stones before painting. Good to know you don't have to. How long do these paints keep?

I have had some for years that are still great! The DecoArt ones...not the others...In fact I bought a couple from a local craft shop that had some RETIRED colors that DecoArt no longer produces and has not for a while....they still work great. I do not seal my stones first....unless it is super porous....but that is rare

Your video was really helpful! I just went and bought some value packs of DecoArt Americana, after returning a large pack of Craftsmart (the price was right, but the quality was terrible). Anyways, we can't get the multi-surface of Americana here... what kind of varnish would I use to protect the regular Americana, if I wanted to use it on ceramics or glass, etc? Also, Americana doesn't seem to have the same kind of coverage as say, FolkArt (which you're right - it leaves peaks). I seem to be getting a bit of bleed or lightening on the edges of my dots with the Americana, at least when I dot a few dots in a row (larger to smaller). Am I just not using enough paint on my tool?
@MirandaPitrone
@MirandaPitrone Год назад
Awesome. I am so glad you found it helpful. I am not a fan of Craftsmart...the quality is hit or miss :( I would use the multisurface paints for ceramic. They cure in the oven or air drying and then are water proof :) As far as the paint bleeding....it might just need to be mixed/shaken better. I almost never have problems with decoart...ever. I love their paint

useful videos except for that I'm base in India and those paint brands won't help me. Here I am asking about the dot shapes. I am trying to achieve pointed peak top on dots, but what I have seen in your video- dots can be of any type, is that so? so for mandala dot painting, we can do dome top on dot / pointed peak top on dot / flat top on dot ? is that right ? Pls reply. And a suggestion - maybe in your next video, do try with Indian colour brands if available.

Miranda, when you're using the DecoArt Americana "Straight Up" acrylic paint, do you thin it at all or use it straight from the bottle? This Americana brand is just starting to become available here in the UK and would like to give it a try if at all possible.

Lesley Kuhn Sometimes I have noticed peak when using tools...there is much less peaking with brushes. Fir the larger dots you can use a smaller tool and "swirl" the paint around like you are drawing a circle...that might reduce the peaks. Good luck💕

I have just started with doing dot mandala.. its amazing! however, i have a question, i bought oil paint instead of acrylic paint. would the dot mandala still work with oil paint? as the oil paint is quite thick and doesnt have the fluidity, i am wondering if there is anyway i could use it.
@MirandaPitrone
@MirandaPitrone 3 года назад
It will definitely be a challenge. Even thick acrylic paint doesn't work very well. And I am not sure about thinning oil paints. I've never really worked with them. You can still make dots but they're not going to be perfectly circular and depending on your tools it's going to leave a little point when you pull your tool up from your canvas it will leave a peak. I hope that helps answer your question. Welcome to this wonderful and therapeutic art.

Can you thin out a paint? If so what do you recommend?
@MirandaPitrone
@MirandaPitrone 6 лет назад
Deborah Martorano The deco art paints generally do not need it...but because they are a water-based acrylic you can just use water to get it to the consistency that you prefer. Probably with any of the water-based acrylics you could do that. The golden paints that I was using do not need thinning either and they are great quality as well
