In this video I compare both 2-5 stop and 6-9 stop filter and give you some advice how to find out what you will need to determine which filter is right for you if you can only get 1 of them.

It is actually a setting in the menu of most cameras. On my A6400 it is in camera menu 1, Exposure1, page 8/14, bottome option Exposure step. You can select .3EV or .5EV.. The nice thing is it gives you some different shutter speed options as well. So if you have it set to .5EV it would be every 2 clicks on your shutter adjustment.

I have a video planned to show other profiles with these filters. As far as what it would be with your ISO. Use an ISO light stop chart found online and just calculate how many stops more you will need. I would say I find myself at 5 stops often on full sun that unless you stop down to 5.6 or higher you might need the 6-9 stop filter for ISO 800 on full sun.

great man.. Thank you so much. As other people already said... Nobody else will explain that! I am using a 35mm 1.8 lens with slog2 at a native 800 iso... I am having a really hard time figuring out what kind of filter I will need. I looked into a 2-400 variable ND that has up to 5/+6 stops but Im afraid that on a really bright day this won't be enough since I don't want to see any kind of cross vignetting that will happen from 5+ stops on. After watching your video though I feel like a 2-5 stops filter will maybe do the Job cause I can still go from f1.8 to f4 e.g. if it's too bright... Last but not least: Would you recommend a variable ND filter in general? I know that normal ND filters offer better image quality because there is less colour shift and vignetting but I imagine it to be a pain in the ass to screw on and off several filters until you have the right exposure...
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 3 года назад
Shooting 1.8 with SLOG-2 at the 800 ISO the 2-5 will not be enough. Yes you can adjust your aperture. Some times I find even 9 stops is not enough depending on how bright it is outside with those settings. If you get the 6-9 filter, you can increase your ISO if it is too dark, but I would rather have cleaner footage personally. I find the PMVND to be consistent across the adjustment range and find no ill effects personally in my footage. I have never used regular ND filters, other then the Polar Pro ones for my drone.

@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 3 года назад
That is what most people do. I chose to go with the 77mm just because it is my largest lens size currently. But i am usually stepping that down to 67mm for my 24mm. Watch my other PMVND video and I show what rings I use.

@MalcolmWalker

I am not too sure how you can reduce it. But I do notice the same thing. I believe it may be from an over saturation or contrast. Some of the picture profiles do have a detail option that you can make sure is down lower. But this is just one small adjustment. Usually out at mid-day if I am with someone (hard to get others up with me early in the am). Video usually 1080p f/4, sometimes 4K. Which would you recommend? 1-5 or 6-9? Hi! Thanks for the video! I own lenses Zeiss55f1.8, Tamron17-28F2.8 and 85mmF1.8. Can you suggest a 2-5 stop for me? Thank you so much!
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 4 года назад
I would suggest the 2-5 stop for the 2.8 lens. But if you want to shoot the 1.8 lenses wide open then I would recommend the 6-9 stop. However that is with S-log settings. If you do not shoot in the log profile then I would recommend just the 2-5 for all the lenses since you can have base ISOs much lower then with a S-log format, as well as your exposure metering can be closer to the 0 mark.
@HDBnB1
@HDBnB1 3 года назад
I run the sony a7iii and now the sony a7siii with the sigma 24.70 2.8 Mainly run and gun shoots but just want to be covered in possible bright daylight situations. I'm leaning towards the 2-5 stop on the new pmvnd. What do you think? Won't be shooting in slog, mainly hlg
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 3 года назад
HD BnB I would recommend the 2-5 stop because you are not using Slog so your base ISO is 100. You also have the option to move to f 3.5 or f 4 if you need too. You can also over crank your shutter by a third or 2/3 if needed too depending on your scene. When I run and gun I always use the 2-5. I always find myself going to 2 stops going inside a building or any where but full sun. However.... using the new Siii might allow you to get the 6-9 and just bump your ISO if needed. But if your lens is a 2.8 I would still run the 2-5. I can say also, to shoot at the 24p at 1/50 at 2.8 in full sun will require the 6-9 without making other adjustments in f stop or shutter.

As a general rule of thumb yes. However the correct method as I have recently learned about but have not fully figured out myself yet, has to do with setting your greyscale at a certain percentage on the waveform. I have only recently learned this method with watching how to color grade properly.

ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2kIR-wcSFpo.html Check out my latest video as I discuss the use of both filters a bit more. From what I have seen the Canon R6 has a bit poorer low light high iso performance so you will want to know what your ISO limits are. If you don't want to increase your ISO then I would stick too the 2-5 and raise your aperture. But if you want to use the 2.8 when filming then the 2-5 will only work in shaded or lower ambient light conditions. It will not be enough in bright outdoor environments. Good luck on your decision!. Either way they are both fantastic tools and you can adapt to which one you have.

For long exposure photography, is 2-5 still good? Or do I need to go with 6-9? I wish it was 2-6 instead 2-5. Unless you have advice on how to get it with the 2-5. I also wanted the 2-5 for regular use not long exposure. So I'm at a dead end choice. It's too expensive for both.

It all really depends on how long of an exposure your doing and what the ambient light is doing. Do you have fast glass you are using for video? If video is your primary use, then you can get the 6-9 and bump your ISO up in video if you feel you need the darker filter for your long exposures. My self personally I have only used the 6-9 for long exposures. I know the version 2's that were just released are all the same price and if you order either set from Polar Pro directly they discount a combo set.

thanks so much for this. If its not too much ,when you get time can make the same video without s-log? The Flat profile was kind of throwing me off when you compared the two.i have a a6300 and i normally use PP2. and I have a zeiss 24 1.8 and zeiss 16-70mm.I would like to shoot sometimes with the lens wide open..Also I have a ND8/PL and ND 64/PL. do you think that should be enough to take care of most of my needs? Im just going to plan a trip and want to be prepare for most situations. Thanks again

Thank you very much. The ND8 you have will act like a 3 stop filter, while the ND64 will act like a 6 stop filter. I can tell you from my experience, the ND64 won't be enough to shoot at 24fps@1/50sec wide open at 1.8 on a full sunny day, in S-Log because base ISO is 500, but in PP2 the camera will let you lower your ISO to 100, that is about 2 1/3 stops of light you can reduce by being able to shoot at ISO 100. It might be enough to get you by. It would be enough to work with if you shoot slow-mo or at 120fps at 1/250sec. You should be able to find a good balance with either filter, depending on conditions, because you will have the option to adjust ISO down further, and find an even exposure of around 0.0 --- +0.7 on your meter because you are not shooting in S-Log

@@MalcolmWalker i forgot to mention i have the peter mckinnon 2-5 stop as well. should those three be enough? and most of the time i would only stop down to 2.8. or would you suggest i get the 6-9 stop , and get rid of another filter? which Three filters would you choose to cover most of your bases?
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 4 года назад
Since you have the 2-5 stop filter, I would not use the ND8 unless you want to have the polarizer effect. At f2.8 you should not need the 6-9 stop filter because your base ISO will be able to go down to ISO100 in PP2, and still be able to shoot at 24 fps @1/50sec.

thanks for the video .. Why are you filming @ iso 500 ? Best, Stas
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 4 года назад
When you shoot theSony A6400 in S-log profile the base ISO is 500. On my A7Rii the base ISO in S-log is 800 ISO. That is why a choose to do the demonstration in S-log as it is necessary to have some short of ND filter when outdoors with ISO that high.

I have the Fujifilm 50mm 1.0. If I want to shoot wide open on sunny days for stills. Would you recommend the 2-5?
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 3 года назад
Either one will work for you for stills. It will only help you keep your shutter open longer at the f1.0 if you are trying to get motion blur or any long exposure effects. The shutter calculation will still help you determine what exposure you want and how many stops you need. Set your camera at f1.0 and your ISO at the desired settings. Then select the shutter speed you want to shoot at. Then bump your shutter as I did in the video up to proper exposure and count how many stops you needed to get to proper exposure from your desired settings.

great test bro, i got the 6 to 9 recently but was dissapointed, i tested with my 16-35 2.8 lens on a bright day with slog, trying to get the exposure to 2.0, but the 6 stop was just too dark, and only exposed till like 1.7 definitely a bummer but the 2 to 5 should work?!
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 4 года назад
Yes sir the 2-5 on a 2.8 lens should get you there. I do find sometimes you need like 5.5 stops of light to be perfect but that is easy to get with some minor setting adjustments in those cases. I just finished a trip and I only used the 2-5 stop on my 18-135 kit lens. It is only 3.5 at 18 which is what i shot vlogging most of the time and i would just adjust it from 2-3 stops usually.

2-5 or 6-9 For FE 85 mm at f1.8...?
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 4 года назад
If you are in daylight sun at 1.8 you will want the 6-9 if your shutter is 1/50. However if you are shooting higher frame rates or any other light conditions other then full sun you might find the 6-9 is too dark. I usually shoot at 2.8 for most of my video stuff because 1.8 or1.4 is too narrow for my taste unless I want something like that.. even after making the video I rarely use the 6-9

Cant you skip all this with a sony, using the zebra stripes?
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker 2 года назад
Zebras only help you see blown out or over exposed areas in the image. So if you want to retain the 180degree rule in video and shoot wide up you have to physically remove the light coming into the camera. That is why you would use an ND filter for this.

If my camera gives iso less than 500 ..i think 2-5 is right choice
@MalcolmWalker
@MalcolmWalker Год назад
Yes, when shooting LOG format some cameras bump the ISO much higher, which can require the 6-9. I still recommend just the 2-5 to most people because you can easily adjust your f stop to get proper exposure if needed.
