We've cut out the paynes feeder wall and converted them into 8 frame poly nucs ;)

I'm in the northern USA and use poly hives made here by superior bee in Ohio.. They are full 2 inches thick, i also really like the poly. I enjoyed the comparison...thank you!

Wow. 2 inches thick! I bet the bees absolutely love that! Good insulation is great in winter but also really good for jobs in summer like fanning down nectar!

I started with Paynes nuc, but hated the side feeder and bought a Maisemore as well. Have since bought a top feeder for the Paynes, which is better and love your idea of cutting out the side feeder to make an 8 frame nuc. Mine is currently blocked off as it is also really difficult to clean especially if they have put some brace comb down it!

Yes the cleaning can be a real pain cant it? My Paynes are all destined for the 8 frame treatment with a top feeder. Problem is, you cant do it with the bees in it! ;)

I've got Maisemore and BS Honeybees and I can honestly say I think they're both excellent. I'd go with the BSH one simply because of its ability to be 2 three frame nucs and the fondant plug.

Maisemore probably best now that they fixed the roof (and it is MUCH thicker now). But Abelo are about to release one which, while far too expensive, looks like it might beat them all.

The new maisemore roof has much improved the overall design but I personally prefer the BS Honey Bees nuc due to the greater density of poly. Ill happily use both though. There really isnt much in it at all. Yes - the new Abelo does look fantastic but ££!

Thanks Laurence I will have a look at the new versions, I went with the BS poly nuc because the top feeder and the fact that Maisemour do an extension box that fits it so you can effectively put a full brood box in a Nuc footprint and still feed with the BS top feeder, its served me very well. Being in a windy spot I have to put things around the base or the bees only use the top half of the frames but its no different to any of the other mesh floor in that sense. It happens with national brood boxes too if I leave them open underneath. At this point I will be buying more BS honey bees Nucs with the maisemour Nuc brood extension box as an add on.

Thats my go to combo for the time being although I would prefer BS Honey Bees to produce their own extension so I didn't have to chop the runners out to maintain bee space.
@TalRohan
@TalRohan 4 года назад
@@BlackMountainHoney That would be cool, I hadnt thought of cutting the runners out thats a good idea... I think BS they could branch out into full National boxes too the weight of poly they use is excellent.....maybe something they'll do in the future, I know one of them is in the groups on FB if I can spot him I'll ask

@@TalRohan Its on the agenda. Ive seen the prototype ;) Hopefully early next year. I agree. Love the 120g/l density of poly.

Really interesting - I have the Paynes, have never used the side feeder. I cut a hole in the crown board and feed both syrup and fondant that way using a super box as an eke. Any space as we get to the colder months is filled with insulation board. Look forward to the 8 frame modification. Looks like the Abelo is out in September www.abelo.co.uk/shop/polystyrene-nucleus/abelo-national-poly-6-frame-hive-green-grey-pre-order/
@BlackMountainHoney
@BlackMountainHoney 4 года назад
Yes - they should be ready soon and they do look very good indeed. Interesting that you use the supers to feed (I assume with a rapid feeder). Have you seen the paynes top feeders? They look decent. I have to say, Paynes is my least favourite of the three.
@martynhordern7351
@martynhordern7351 4 года назад
@@BlackMountainHoney yes with a rapid feeder - the super doubles up as either an additional half brood box or to ease compression for stores away from the brood so you get two uses for one outlay. I have Paynes poly hives so it was a case of brand loyalty when I first started out. Its been in use on and off all year with three different splits in.
