Hey James I just thought you should know that moving pictures were actually invented in 1888 so I'm a little disappointed to see you using still images in 2024. Being 136 years behind the curb just feels like a massive oversight from you and I want you to look in the mirror and ask yourself if it's up to standard. Only calling you out because I love you mate and know you can do better mate yeah
behind the curb, misused idioms, new feature. Had a friend who used caviar instead of caveat, never told him just laughed a bit inside every time he said it.
@@millwalker4337 After editing that to say curve out of embarrassment I've decided to go back and make it curb again. Lets say I'm taking it on the shin. Can you be behind the curve, or only ahead of it? How many times have I said that phrase wrong until today with nobody telling me? I'm losing my grape on reality.
I just don't understand why Jim didn't cough up £6.7 billion for exclusive Premier League rights so he can use the footage in his little RU-vid videos. He clearly doesn't care about content quality.
I used to play Career Mode in FIFA and had a game on Sunday, then Tuesday, then Saturday. I always disliked it because I said “that’s unrealistic”. Well.. guess it’s not unrealistic anymore is it
Premier League™ Jim getting nervous and trying to move Flav on from complaining about multi-millionaires, unsurprising from that big time Charlie, we’ve lost our infallible cute little minnow who stood up for the working man. Flav is our working class champion now.
@@joesid3153 i thought calling him Premier League™ Jim, big time Charlie and an infallible cute little minnow would make it clear that i was being sarcastic, evidently not.
I came for Jim and I stayed for Flav. Usually see your comments on football discussion videos, hard to not recognise a celtic name with a chrissy pfp, Hail Hail!
Man I love Jimbo and have Spurs solidarity with Flav, but it sure is rich hearing these guys stick it to those dang millionaire players, by parroting and shadowing billionaire owner talking points. Sure players are paid millions to kick a ball (ask the players with CTE from playing football how rosy that is), but the billionaires can sit and smash their toys together as much as they want and put a World Cup on three different continents to have the players travel. Just telling players to sit and ignoring the pressures in a team to keep your place and not get dropped, let alone having the fans and media shit themselves and grill a manager anytime a star is rested for a week currently. You guys need to think critically about who’s side your standing on in this argument, the employees or management, and if I ever find I’m siding with management then I need to stop being a scab and get my head screwed on straight
Flav's an utter moron. The game's faster and more intense than ever, the best players play more games than ever - and they're adding more games to the calendar too. There are only so many games footballers can play before the quality of their performances suffer. The last euros was the worst tournament I can remember, because the players were knackered. Even Spain's winning team was mostly made up of players whose clubs didn't play loads of games last season. Only carvajal and rodri had intense club seasons, off the top of my head. What footballers get paid is completely irrelevant to what the human body can do. Lower league teams don't have european football, most of their players won't play international football and the football they play is less intense on and off the pitch. This really isn't complicated stuff to grasp... unless your name's flav.
Hi James, just a bit of feedback on the breakdown videos. I think most viewers would get a lot more out of the video if you used clips from the game rather than stills. Not hating but it’s just critical feedback that I think everybody else is too scared to give you, whereas I just say it how it is 👍🏻
A weird implication from Jim about players with money that divorced them from being humans with needs who are individuals experiencing life like all of us. They just have different experiences. "The privilege those players have" like people who are top level pros didn't sacrifice anything to get where they are is mind bending
man flav shows his hand everytime player welfare comes up, its so dumb, its about protecting the best players from themselves so we the consumer get the best product, saka is gonna fall off a cliff eventually and we will know why, you are so short sighted for someone whos watched the sport for basically 4 decades and seen many players be consumed by injury and overtraining essentially but they get paid well so who cares? shameless
THERE ABSOLUTELY ARE TOO MANY GAMES !! What do we want as fans ? As many games as possible ? Then watch more leagues ! There actually IS football every day ! No ! What we want is max the quality of games !! Fewer injuries, less resting of the best players !! We want to see the best players, the best systems, the best matches !! We won't get that with more than a certain number of games a year. We want the perfect number of games, not the maximum !!
There are players in the Charlton Athletic squad who played more minutes of football last season than anyone in the Man City squad. They’re not complaining. You’re being lied to mate
@@dexter6447 with all due respect to Charlton there’s a reason those players play for them tho and not city. The quality and the quality of opposition don’t match.
@@Hhammer yeah of course. But you’d expect city’s general fitness level to be proportionally higher as well. I was more saying it’s a bit of a joke to hear Real Madrid and Man City players complain about games when they’re the two squads who have like 50 world class players. Their benches could both finish second in their leagues
Flav is like “oh you’re playing too many games? Just don’t play the World Cup! pull out!” And then everyone criticizes Ben White for not playing for England He’s also massively missing the greater point
i agree i dont feel sorry for footballers but feel like the quality is being effected perticularily this last euros, so playing slightly less games at higher quality would be better for me as a fan.
Tom Hardy is a good actor but people who are just casual film viewers think he is incredible so I get this week's hot take. If you want to see a different side to him then watch the movie Locke
If the 'too many games' resolution was that players could only play 55 games a season you'd 100% have all the top managers moaning about not having the full use of his top players at certain points of the season.
I think the argument is more to do with more games = less quality. Whereas if players have less games and more time to rest then the quality of matches will be at a higher standard. Also comparing League 1 games to Prem level is apple to oranges. The intensity is completely different which should go without saying so 1 game in the Prem is not equal to 1 game in League one
@@mellowfellow4956 playing better football doesn't mean they are working harder relative to their capabilities, it just shows the difference in their capabilities.
@@aidan2453 The fact there is a need for difference capabilities to play at a higher level in of itself implies they have to work harder? A Sunday league player would struggle at national league level so why wouldn't it also scale upwards in terms of capabilities and requirement of effort?
@@mellowfellow4956 having greater capability in something does not necessarily mean someone has worked harder. Everyone isn't born with an equal potential for everything. It would not be surprising to find league one players who play to the absolute best of their ability and maximise their training, yet still are not capable of performing at a premier league level. Effort isn't the only factor when it comes to elite performance. Genetics, mental aptitude, health history all play a role and can be the difference regarding the level of performance someone is capable of achieving, along with effort.
@@aidan2453 not sure what that has to do with my comment. The basic point is saying a league one team has played a bunch of games is not the same as playing even half the amount of games at Prem level. Its just completely different in terms of effort, intensity, ability etc... pretty much every factor you can think of. It is often talked about how when a team is promoted to the Prem that they have even less time on the ball than in the championship and your mistakes will get brutally capitalized on. So ultimately you can't just do a 1 to 1 comparison
Rodri was asked a question and answered with a “maybe”. It wasn’t a yes or no. I don’t think he was trying to put himself at the head of the movement. Also flav does not want a case where the big clubs turn into the the nba’s rotation problem. As much as other clubs want the big teams to not have the best players every game the fans want to see the best players play the most amount of games that they can. Rodri said 50 to 60 is fine but 70 is too much. The game Rodri is rested and we drop points these same people would be questioning why Rodri is sat on the bench for “rest”
The increase in games also means the “need” for the top teams to hoard the talent around them. Many talented -but not top- footballers would choose to earn 100k a week, play 15 games a season and get a bunch of medals rather than play regularly for their mid-table side and have the chance to become a local legend or get your team to an Europa League in an exceptional season. Scarcity increases the value of things, it also applies to how entertaining an sporting event is.
The ‘too many games’ is a weird one. I can’t just get out of my head that there’s millions of people who would want Rodri’s position, for a fraction of the money he earns. Does the fact he has a better life than 99% of people mean he can’t complain? It’s really one I’m struggling to make up my mind on. Is the reason he gets paid this much not because people want to watch him every three days, so do the number of games just come with the career you’ve chosen?
When these players started their careers you didn't have these ridiculous nations league games or this new world club thing MC and Chelsea will have to deal with. It doesn't matter how much they're paid, too many games is too many games.
It’s easy to say “just rotate the players more” But fans go to games to see the top players. You’re talking about young kids at the Arsenal games.. they go there wanting to see Saka play. Then if they do rotate and they lose a game, the managers get roasted for not playing their top 11. And with city being the animal they are, other teams literally can’t afford dropping any points
This is why im a moist slug and love this podcast so much. James and Flav go from showing their crotch on camera to quickly transition to the most engaging and perceptive conversations in modern football. Up the JAFFN. Never let this podcast die.
I swore Handsey said his recommendation for James Bond was Richard Madeley. Jaffn - I laughed so hard i felt the momemt it snapped, so please consider contributing to my hernia gofundme as you're indirectly responsible
James is so stubborn when it comes to using still images in football. He's been found out and rather than showing adaptability he's just flogging the dead horse. "Using still images is who we are" Yeah sure but that doesn't mean we can't try something else against the big teams. What was I saying?
The more games you add the less valuable each game becomes, thus the need to win them becomes lesser. Eventually leading to worse games overall, because "Well we need to bench all our best players for this, and when we do play our best players, we'll play safe and boring". All the people that want 'Barclays Men' back, and not getting it with more games. We're heading to the NBA model, where the regular season means very little and the play-offs are all anyone is waiting for. As someone whose studied sports science, the "WeLl ThEy EaRn So MucH" argument infuriates me. We are heading to the Super League with that mentality. All this will do is make the stuff you're paying for, the thing you enjoy following/watching, categorically worse.
I agree, it’s a disgrace teams spend millions on back up players and they NEVER rotate. Matheas Nunes cost £50m and Pep will never start him in a Premier League game unless he’s forced to. Imagine spending £50m on a midfielder and you think he’s not good enough to start in the team. The games gone
I think blaming the managers is too convenient, and what fifa/uefa wants us to do. Pep, arteta, whoever is under constant pressure (believe it or not) from their clubs owners to win games and competitions. That's literally their job. That's why *they* are paid. They have to put out their best team to win games because the margins are so tight and the ramifications for losing are so high. If Pep rested rodri every 3 games in the treble winning season, do they win the treble?
@@LongoHighlightsif the answer to your last question is no, then managers have no right to complain about amount of games. If they’re so confident about their systems and believe that they are so good tactically etc then they should have no problem swapping rodri out for another £50m midfielder. I agree whole heartedly with Rodri when he says he plays too many games, and am convinced it’s why he’s having injury issues atm. But that’s his managers fault, no one else.
41:31 Severnside derby is between Bristol City and Cardiff. Its called that because of the river Severn. Please tell me this was a joke that went over my bead 😂
What is rodri supposed to do to reduce his game time? Not play for spain? Im sure that would go over well. Request that pep plays him less? It seems like hes already done that. Its actually helpful to have a huge star like rodri be the face of this as opposed to a non star. Rodri is fighting for himself but also the little guys. Dont necessarily need a strike but i think flav is off here.
He's not fighting for the little guys, the end goal of this is to get rid of the league Cup and scrap FA cup replays which would be horrible for the little guys. Plus as far as players go, the little guys are on crap salaries and make money from appearance bonuses so will happily play all the football under the sun
@@jamesduffy7549 thats a good point. You have to be good to play all the time. Id push back on anyone in the prem having a crap salary but certainly comparatively crap. But you’re right.
As a pompey fan even though I could see the mischievous grin on Jim's face as he said it. Calling Moushino a Russell Martin lite genuinely filled me with unfathomable rage. The R's were almost like a 2nd team for me due to the respect I once had for jimbo. The gloves are off, and now I wish ainsworth ball on you and your pathetic hoops
Are there to many games maybe, however just look lower down the footballing league league one has more league games and an additional cup to participate in and then if they get into play offs that’s 2 more additional games. If you say there are to many games they should be the focus first. These are the teams with the least amount of money. The prem teams have so much money conspired to these teams you have money rotate your squad? And yes like you have mentioned Arsenal playing 2 starters in a game they didn’t need to play but then complain about the amount of games? Makes 0 sense
Flav is forgetting the bit in the "too many games" conversation where more rotation effectively means the fans who pay their hard earned money to go to these games won't get to see as much of the best players playing for their team. This has been a huge issue in the NBA in recent years where fans are upset they're paying ever increasing ticket prices during an 82 game season just for their favorite players to be on the bench saving themselves for the playoffs. We definitely don't need more games.
but that’s because US sport doesn’t have the same fan culture, fans follow players vs teams. i couldn’t give a toss who’s playing, im going to support my club.
@@celtic69 But you want to see good, entertaining football, though, right ? You don't get that if players are injured, rested, if the players playing are tired, etc !!
@@QazwerDave if you’re a good manager you should be able to rotate a squad of 23+ without sacrificing how you play, it’s my main gripe with Arteta, he has his XI and rarely ever changes it and then says he doesn’t have the strength in depth despite every single player in the squad being signed under his management
@@librarygary1618 that adds to my point, all the proposed changes are to suit the American market/fanbase, things like drinks breaks & stopping the clock are a slippery slope to in game commercials. also hope you’re having nice Friday mate, love you.
i tried giving football between the lines a go but immediately threw my phone at the wall when i found out it was just football chat and there was no lines chat, i wanted to know if flav used a key or a rolled up bank note
Every club has big squads of players, if you include the youngsters. More games, more rotation for the kids to get a start,. Spectator fatigue & ticket costs to me are more of a limiting factor. When people stop turning up, thats too many games.
Controversial, but I would enjoy an entire episode of Jaffn with stills, particularly of both James and his unknown guest standing with their pelvises thrusting towards the lense, rather than footage.
Hi James. Love the pod and congratulations on the new job with the Premier League. Just a quick bit of friendly advice. I feel like the videos for the Premier League would benefit from actual footage rather than stills. Can really see you going far once you start using footage. Keep up the good work bud! 🙏
I don't support any prem team but I'm very surprised Spurs are favorites for the Europa League ahead of Man Utd. Both teams are bang average but at least United has won silverware with Ten Hag (EFL cup and FA Cup). I'd have Utd ahead of Spurs for sure.
Absolutely amazing that in one breath the discussion is that footballers earn too much money to be complaining saying they need to play less games to avoid serious life changing injuries and then in the next breath saying you need a break from earning thousands of pounds a week watching these footballers play 😂😂.
Slightly crazy idea to fix the 'too many games' problem, and make League cup more exciting: The moment any player plays a single min in a European comp, they are disqualified from playing in the lg cup the same season. - Fixture relief for snr players - Lg cup more competitive, anyone could win it - The top 8 get to give their eligible youngsters more first team minutes in Lg cup, exciting for the fans and good opportunity for the players
As a United fan, I can definitely see Ten Hag getting the sack, especially if we lose/draw all of the next three games. However, like Flav said with Ange, the team is undeniably playing better than last season but just aren't getting the results. Most of the underlying stats agree with that assertion (barring the finishing stats, which has obviously been a massive problem). Brighton was an unfortunate loss caused by stupid individual mistakes, Liverpool were simply better and more clinical but the game came down to 3 individual mistakes, and we dominated Palace for 70 minutes but couldn't score a damn goal. The game against Twente was a disgrace from everybody, and if the football continues like that, then he'll be gone by Christmas. If the team can continue to play like they did against Palace, then I'm confident that we'll be fine for 5th+ and a good cup run or two.
Talking about derbies you’re not sure why, I was working with a Portsmouth fan and he said when he thinks of Sunderland he thinks that’s a bit of a derby, I just said I don’t think of Portsmouth at all
I understand the point flav is making about changing and making new competitions for money being negative but to hear a spurs fan dismiss the club World Cup as a trophy was such a cringe moment. Especially since before this new edition of the cwc you had to win ucl to even get a chance to compete.
Tottenham literally had just league games last season and still got so many injuries, we couldn't blame being overplayed... Maybe they were underplayed?
I can just imagine Jim sat downstairs late at night and the Mrs says ' hey its late are you coming to bed' in which he replies ; ' ya in about 40 minutes im just watching ten minutes of football at .25 speed ' 😂 After the 40 minutes are up Jim listens precariously, then carefully and swiftly drives to Fleetwood services for a cheeky nosh. After an explicit and sensual encounter that only us slugs will ever know, he makes his way back hastily. Slowly and quietly he rolls into bed, but by accident wakes up his wife who asks why he is up so late. To which Jim replies 'slugs will be slugs'.
I personally don’t care that the top clubs & players feel like they’re playing too many games. They will all retire 30 years earlier than the average person and have more money than the average person could dream of.
When i was in my 20s i worked on a building site 50 hours a week very hard lift all week and always on my feet i went for a 3 mile run every week day morning before work and played a match Saturday and played a match on sunday then the whole process started over again the next week i felt great and strong all the time.... Not sure how playing two games a week and being proper pampered in between and getting rest when needed is causing injuries? I was never injured !! Injuries are part of football they will happen if we played 10 games a season its just either unlucky or down to the individual
Regarding the overplaying of the players, I think this issue is bigger than just player fatigue. Like ultimately, with sports science where it's at these top players will only be pushed to play more to a certain extent, like the top clubs aren't going to overplay these players to their detriment. Surely that just means we'll end up with these clubs needing huge squads to play the number of matches, just making the gap between the bigger and smaller clubs even larger.
James claiming to be a QPR fan but he's never been to a womens game.... Your a QPR MENS fan, so just say that and stop claiming to support the whole club.
Regarding the "too many games" conversation. I agree with Flav that it's on the managers to rotate the squad and carefully introduce youth team players. The bigger clubs can all afford 2 players per position so you could easily give 30+ starts to each player should you make it to the final of every competition. Also one thing that might get missed is that although you can (and in my opinion should) utilise the full squad more effectively, there's no break or rotation available for the manager. We've already seen Klopp suffer from burnout, I wonder if managers will start to have a shorter stint at top clubs. Would this lead to a delegation to the assistant manager for certain games so the head coach can take time off? Who knows? That might be a good way to develop coaches, the same way some teams have a cup goalkeeper you could end up with cup coaches. Whatever happens, we can only move forward.
Completely with Flav on fixture congestion.. If your players are tired, rotate your squad. You've got lads getting paid £100-200k a week to play 15 mins here and there. Use them.
In answer to Flav's question about 'Who have Chelsea played?' Man City (weren't expected to win), then 4 teams with a total of 2 wins between them. Wolves (0 wins), Palace (0 wins), Bournemouth (1 win) & West Ham (1 win). Bournemouths win was against Everton & West Ham's against Palace. Not getting all this hype about Chelsea yet, win against Brighton & Forest (both undeafeated) in their next two games and then, maybe, start to take notice of them.
Why do people think that COIVD devalues Liverpool's league win? They were twenty-plus points clear when the shutdown began and had the league won within two matches of the restart. The season that gets the asterisk for being affected by COVID was 20/21; City get that asterisk.
"Bronson" and "The Take"... Tom Hardy's finest performances and wayyyyy better than anything he's done since breaking into the Hollywood vibes. Those two titles alone, though, are untouchable.
Was a bit worried we’d lose the dirty side of this podcast due to Jim’s new Premiere league role. But 6 minutes in and we’ve got a side by side groin shot talking about flav “tapping it”. We’re so back
ETH should be given a lifetime contract. He is the best manager for Liverpool! He singlehandedly guarantees Liverpool will finish above Man United every season.
