There are several journey planning apps and services available for railway route planning with the Japan Rail Pass. But which one is best? I look at the 3 main contenders from Jorudan, Navitime and Google Maps. I'll tell you their strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately which one you should use when planning journeys using the Japan Rail Pass.

I used Navitime app extensively when I was in Japan for the first time a few weeks ago and checked Google maps for redundancy/peace of mind. Absolutely loved the app! There’s one app I’ve heard people also use called Japan Official Travel App that seems similar to Navitime in terms of searching and route finding. Great video and perfect for when I plan on going traveling from Tokyo - Hakata via JR Pass in April!

Yes, it's a great idea to double check with these apps. You can often find a route that the other one missed. I didn't include it in the video but I even got different results on the Beppu to Fukuoka route from Navitime's app and their website! So it really pays to check. Yes, I've come across that one too. Looks very much like Navitime reskinned! I should give it a try and see if the results are the same as Navitime. My tip for that journey - unless you've got the green pass, take the Sakura and be sure to get reserved seats! As good as the green car ones!

@@japanunravelled Thanks for the tip! I was considering getting either the normal or green pass, just because I'll be bringing along a suitcase that's just *barely* the size that can fit on the overhead storage. I wouldn't mind splurging a bit on the green pass just to at least experience "first-class" on a shinkansen once. Reserved seating is a must! Have to get beautiful shots of the views on that journey :)

I feel exactly the same. Hyperdia was the best. Never understood why the stopt. Navitime comes close but are in no way equal to the former Hyperdia.

Hi Andrew, Really admired your video and your way of comparisons between apps., in-fact Navitime has become my personal favorite to plan my trip to Japan. Speaking of the same, I am traveling to Japan from 19-Nov-2023 to 29-Nov-2023 to celebrate my wife's birthday,. The places I wish to cover are; Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Since my arrival and departure flights are both from Narita Airport, I am a bit confused about the priority of places I should plan in the order. As in like...should I start from Osaka ...then Kyoto and finally end with the trip from Tokyo? or what should be the order? Would really appreciate your insights on this, as it will help me to plan my trip more efficiently! Thanking you🤗

Thanks for your kindness - yes, I really like Navitime too! That's around the peak season for autumn colours, so if I were you I'd get down to Kyoto first. Weekdays are more sensible days for avoiding the worst of the crowds. Then Osaka and Tokyo. But actually, since Osaka and Kyoto are so close, it doesn't make that much difference which place you see first. Anyway, do enjoy it!

I was using hyperdia as well..then I found out that timing was not the right one and someone told me to use Jordan..There is a cool feature in that application..I can print out the journey so that I know what train or metro I have to take and at what time!also I will show to the ticket office which Shinkansen I want to book. I was trying to search a metro from Ginza to haneda airport terminal 3(is for European right?)should I take the monorail or there is a bus included in the jrpass..?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Hyperdia doesn't do route planning anymore, just gives you vague ideas about how long the journey will take. Yes, I like printing the routes sometimes, I use that in the JP version of Jorudan. I don't know which terminal you'll be arriving at but the monorail is included in the JR Pass. Monorail > Hamamatsuchō, change to Yamanote Line to go to Ginza,

Hi! Thanks for the v useful video. I've installed navitime, but it tells me that I as an EU user, I can't create a login due to EU privacy restrictions. Aside from the fact that unfortunately the UK isn't part of the EU anymore, this means I can't use useful features like adding the hotels we'll be staying at & saving journeys. I've googled but can't find info about this restriction, and if there's a way to accept the privacy policy. Is this the experience for all EU/UK users? Help!
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
Such a shame that the EU makes life so convenient. I'm afraid I have no idea. I usually just bookmark or screenshot journeys, so I don't know much about these extra features. Sorry I can't be of more help.

For Navitime it appears you need a premium subscription for many of the features you were showing. Am I correct in that assumption?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled 8 месяцев назад
Depends on what features you're talking about - and I haven't used the app since making the video. However, the website is offering everything you'd need and there's no subscription there.

Why does Navitime give me a price which seems to be equivalent to 2x? When I click on the route, the individual ticket price seems to be half...
@canterburyjhiguma8387
@canterburyjhiguma8387 Год назад
When calculating the prices (to compare with a 14D JR Pass), I want to have a realistic figure. So now I don't know, for example, whether Ueno to Karuizawa is 2640 or 5280...
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
It's giving you the information, just not telling you the basics of how tickets work. 2460 is your basic fare that will get you there by local train. But to use the shinkansen, you need to buy the superexpress ticket too, bringing the price up to 5280. You might find it easier to use a tool like this: m.jrpass.com/farecalculator

Is jorudan more accurate in train time than navi?
@japanunravelled
@japanunravelled Год назад
They all use the same timetable data. Does Jorudan give more efficient routes? That depends on the routes. Basically, if in doubt, try the other one.

I'm afraid I don't have any experience of it. You could compare results from it and another app and see how they look. Do let me know what you find if you have time.
