The allure to Hevi Metal is you can drop down 2 sizes and increase your pattern. Hevi Shot is more dense so you get around the same energy as those steel loads. So a better comparison would be HM 4’s or 3’s to those Drylock 2’s. That’s the deal with Hevi but I’m not a huge fan. I’ve shot birds with it and was impressed at times but not at that price point. With that said you did a great test. I’ve been saying for years guys should try their factory chokes first before going aftermarket. I’ve had good success with both factory IC and Mod from my Browning Invector Plus choked guns. My favorite load is the Kent’s but those Drylocks are good. Just more pricy but money well spent if that is what folks are confident in. Keep up the good work. I’ve enjoyed your non complicated approach to this as it encourages people you don’t have to have a physics degree to dial in a load that works for you. Good job! Kevin

That Hevi-Metal is only averaging about 55% at your 40 yard distance. There are around 112 #2 steel pellets and around 71 #4-ish sized hevi-shot pellets in the shell, giving a total of around 183. The Winchester is looking much better in this round.

Great video! 9 out of 10 choke manufacturers recommend dry lok for best performance. The trick really is more pellets not more speed. Pellet count kills it becomes increasingly important with larger shot. But why not shim the gun?

I have never met a person that uses a modified choke for waterfowl. You always pattern test with the choke you’re going to use. Personally I use the hevi shot Extreme range choke tube shooting hevi metal 3.5in #3 and have no problem killing ducks at 80yards

I am just getting into duck. Used old single shot first couple of times, going to pick up my A5 with 30" barrel Monday. I am truly glad you use factory tubes and spent a butt load of money because it's me time and money. Thank you sir.

I hate to look like I'm trying to be the turd in the punchbowl, but I was looking at a chart for both steel & hevi shot, & it appears that there are 53 more #2s in each 1 1/4 oz steel load compared to hevi shot. So is this still a legit result?

I'll try this again, you did good job! now I'm old school, no modern ideas, to take your idea one step farther, after you shoot the 4x4 paper of course you draw the 30" circle around the most shot destiny, here is where I different with the pattern I draw a plus dividing the 30 in circle into a 4 equal parts, the horz. line being the most important, but this will tell you what each section is doing and will give you best test, (old School) shot count, I want 60% above the line 40% below line, this is really good way but takes more time and eliminates ammo fast as well as some chokes, again your method works.

I'd love to see a penetration test. To me, I can always make it pattern better but I love seeing birds drop when they are trying to get out of a hole or when you are on the 3rd shell. Also I was able to learn something from this video!

Great content man! I’ve been hunting with mostly Hevi-Metal since it came out, but I’d be lying if I said ole’ Estates have not dusted some fowl in my guns. Anyone having cycling and pattern issues with new Black Cloud? Me and my buddies have had the worst results with the old brew of B.C. than ANY other shotshell in the past.

A bunch of my hunting buddies tested shells through my SBE II and my M2 and their Benelli’s about 5-6 years ago. Tested a bunch of shells. Through my guns the best cheap shells were the federal blue box they outperformed the Black Cloud even. Hevi Metal was the best higher end shell. And they seem to hit the bird hard as well with cleaner kills. But beware the Hevi Metal now has a new recipe and they say it’s extended range?? It definitely doesn’t preform as well and I’m done buying it.

Great video! So I went duck hunting today and I got some cheap waterfowel loads as water shot rounds and I had never used them before so I decided to try them as regular rounds . I have to say The Herters waterfowel 3" 1&1/8th load BB size shells were the best shells I have ever used. They were Around $11 a box and I hit a duck at 35 yards with a stock choke and blew his wing completely off. I got them at my local Cabelas and you should REALLY look into these rounds.

Heavy X straight tungsten shoots a good pattern as well, except at 40 it vacates a bit in the dead center.

I must say, I am truly Surprised by your findings, After seeing those patterns from your factory modified, I would not do a thing to your choke. Great job Titus,

I used to swear those heavy metals were the cats ass. Especially for diver ducks - until it’s windy. Winds greater than 40 km/h destroy the pattern. Heavy shot holds the true in the wind the steel does not. You can really see it when swatting cripples.

Honestly could have told you how they would have done side by side. Hevi metal=duplex load steel over hevi shot vs a straight steel will lose every time. Those duplex loads open up a lot quicker than straight steel. It's why so many people shooting super tight chokes hit birds better with hevi metal at decoying range. It's opening up quicker! Back off the choke, shoot a straight steel load, and it will perform every time.

Gravity pulls your patterns down just like it would your rifles, your velocity has also fallen off considerably

You are right about the 48 inch paper and taking basically the most dense 30 inch circle area. This also helps you see if your gun is shooting where you point. Most shotguns come from the factory adjusted to shoot level or a little high at 40 yds so that as loads slow more they will still be close say out to about 50 yds. Just like a rifle sighted in at say 100 yds its only a little high out to 100 yds then depending on load caliber etc. i am unclear what shells you are shooting you said it wrong . Are they 3 shot or 2 shot and I believe 3 inch and its certainly not 3 dram of powder so I guess 3 inch 1 1/4 ounce 2 shot? Doubt seriously the heavy metal has the same number of pellets since it is a mix of steel pellets and much smaller hevishot. Did you use a chart for hevimetal number 2 and not hevishot or steel? I believe the hevimetal has more like 180 pellets which of course would make the percent of pellets in circle smaller but not change the total number I would personally test 1 1/8 shot steel since it will come closer with 1550 fps and the 1500 fps Hevimetal but it still won't have as much energy. Or use number 3 hevimetal but I see why u picked the same ounces of shot. Also hevimetal will pattern more like smaller shot size and generally would need a slightly tighter choke but again there is no way to compare part heavy shot etc to all steel with all variables the same because its not the same. I think what you have proved is that your particular gun with modified choke patterns a higher percent with those particular loads in the Drylock not that it is more lethal . i personally wouldn't buy hevimetal to use at 40 yds and closer where steel is sufficient. In summary you did what you set out to do. One reason for less consistent patterns with hevimetal is that the hevishot portion is not round like the tungsten in some other brand shot in fact you are likely to find 2 pellets melded together quite often.

Could you possibly test shooting steel shot through your browning a5 invector ds (full), interested to see if it blows the pattern

I think your front pin on your gun is too high that is why your shots are all low. If it was my gun I would change out my pin for a shorter one or file off a bit off the top depending on what your pin is made of etc. On one of my shot guns that shot low (model 1300 win.) I removed the pin altogether, and it shot great after that.

So you go by what you perceive ass center of mass.Everyone will of course perceive this same center.Never mind poa or poi .Neve mind possible blowing of pattern.
